hey guys today we're going to be comparing coach versus business class [Music] a lot of people want to know when they go to book their tickets they see that coach they see that business is it worth it to pay the extra money for that business class upgrade so that's what we're going to attempt to answer today and give you the lowdown on what you're gonna get and what it's gonna cost and if you should do that or not so the first thing that you need to know is that coach class is the same on most amtrak trains there's really just two different kind of coach classes there's the old style coach and on some of the shorter trains there's a newer style coach seat that's going to be the same business classes all over the board so it's so different it varies so much by trains and actually before we get too deep into this we do have pictures of all of this so you can see it as well if you if you prefer to look at pictures we have that on the blog at groundlifetravel.com so make sure to head over there after you're done watching this video and you can see uh up close and personal these pictures that we're talking about today so in general what you'll get with business classes you will get free drinks and you will uh definitely get it says more legroom but a lot of times just the same leg it seemed the same and you'll get definitely some upgrades on your on your points and so forth so uh we're going to kind of break that down train by train a little bit here the first our first experience with business class was on the northeast regional and on the northeast regional business class is just the exact same as coach like exactly the same it's just coach class with free drinks that's pretty much it the seats as we moved from car to car so we actually saw the coach car we were in the exact same seats like everything was exactly the same the cars were exactly the same other than they were calling it a business car yeah so the one difference you'll you'll have is that like it'll be just the passengers in the car so in the business class there was just a bunch of people in meetings on their phones in coach class it was just families and college students traveling and so forth so that was really the only difference that we could could see so probably not worth the upgrade on the northeast regionals unless it's like really cheap and you're going to drink that much in free drinks uh probably not worth the upgrade uh the next one that we took was the downeaster and the down easter was very unique because the business class was different it has these really nice old uh red seats that they're yeah and they're they're different than anyone that we've seen before it was just one kind of car and you did get the free drinks and i thought that was a nice experience yes that was actually a very nice experience those you did feel like you were kind of in a more luxury type uh a seat or a combination so you did kind of feel different in that particular car but then the thing was when we got off the train we had to walk through coach to get off and i realized that the downeaster has the the newer uh coach class and so i looked at him i took a picture and i thought this coach class is better than the older business class and you can see those pictures side by side over on the blogs and website and i thought to myself i think the coach class is nicer than the business class on on the down easter so on that particular particular train so on that one again i'd probably say unless it's really cheap and you just want to do that you want the free drinks i would probably opt for coach on the down easter another one that's that's unique is the co-star light and the co-star light has pretty similar nice big seats to the downeaster but there is a really good advantage to business class on the coach starlight which we'll get into here and that is that it didn't happen on our train due to what was happening in the in the amtrak system but normally there is an extra observation car on the uh on the co starlight for the business class people correct yes yes so that's that would be under normal circumstances they would have their own observation car which is really quite amazing um to have two observation cars on one train yeah and so it was a little bit different because the the business class car was actually on the other side of the uh sleeper cars and so for them to go to the observation car on our particular route they had to walk through the sleeper cars but normally they have their own observation car on that end of the train and so that would be worth the upgrade so i think on the co-star light if you're gonna pay it and it's not that huge of a difference right i would i would pay for business class on the co-star like yeah that would definitely be worth it because you don't want to miss those views either so it's really nice to have access to uh being able to get to the observation car or if you have your own observation car yeah and then another one that we rode recently was the pacific surfliner we did opt for business class on that what what did you think about that compared to the coach yes so in the pacific surfliner um you've got also the big tables that you can set up so you can have a meeting and actually there were a couple meetings going on on our particular train um our particular car that um you so you've got the two seats two seaters so it's like kind of like one two seat love seat type thing like two seats and they're facing each other and you have a huge table the table is really quite large which is really nice plenty of room for if four people are on computers you've got plenty of space and you can still put drinks and stuff on there and then the the drink station was actually in the car with us as well so the attendant went over got that and brought it back and then they also gave us snacks on that one as well yeah that was the real interesting thing about that was that they did serve food it wasn't like a ton of food but they did serve food and normally the policy is an amtrak business class food is not included and your meals are are not included in that so people do want to usually know that or people think a lot of times well if i get business class i get my meals right you actually don't get me right with business class uh that is only in supercar or first class that is included so in first class on the acela train you do get it but the business class on the acela train is actually the lowest class you can get there so that's just kind of like the normal class because there is no there's no coach on that train so you do really need to check all these different kind of stipulations to determine if it's worth it there are quite a few other trains that have business class i'm going to give you a quick list of them here the carolinian the cascades the empire service the ethan allen the illinois trains the lakeshore limited the maple leaf the michigan trains missouri river runner the palmetto the pennsylvanian and the vermonter so those are the ones you can also get it on other than the trains that we mentioned if it wasn't on that list then you can only ride in coach so i guess the big question here then is is it worth it in general and it is kind of a it depends on your needs and your training right and how long you're going to be on how long they're going to be on and what your purpose is uh so it also depends on the cost because i have seen business where it's like 20 more and i've seen it where it's 200 more right yeah if it's more than 30 to 40 dollars more than coach it is not worth it generally because really the seats are not that much better you get free non-alcoholic drinks that's only worth a couple dollars right so in general we don't ride business anymore we mostly just ride coach because we'd rather save some money put that towards the room at on another trip but uh but on some of them like the co-star light it may be worth it if you can get a good deal i'd say yeah absolutely definitely um so yeah this is basically the rundown for you guys on what the differences are between coach and business class hopefully this was very helpful to you as you choose between the two um when you're booking your next travel day we hope to see you guys on those rails do not forget to give us a like on this video
