hey I'm glad to have my brother Paul back from Africa he's here and Jennifer is here too she's a blessing so anyway we are in this series called encountering God in the Bible this is number 5 I never dreamed I would go this long but it's it's been fun I think it's been fun I hope you think it is too and we're doing an overview of the Bible and this is our third week on the overview we're doing it book by book and so if you missed any of the other teachings you can go online you can get the outline because it's all there and I hope this is like a little handbook for you when when you decide to you know read a book in the Old Testament you just pull it out and look a bit look and see what it's about and so when you read it you will understand it better and so anyway anyway let's see here we've gone through no limit let me tell you this in this overview I have three objectives and it's this to tell you just a little description of what the book is about and then I want to show you how you can see Jesus in that book and then I want to give you just an encouraging take away that I chose myself that is ministered to me and that maybe you it will encourage you and minister to you so we've gone through the history books and now we are in the books and you know God sent prophets in the Old Testament to deal with the Israelites and to speak to the Israelites because you know his purpose was to for the Prophet to be their voice but he often times was a voice of warning and a voice of Correction because this is what the relationship with of the Israelites was with God it was just up and down and up and down and as we saw you know when they obeyed God and they followed him they prospered and they were successful but every time they pulled away from that him they didn't prosper they got from out from under the blessings and then on top of that they usually ended up in captivity and so that's what a lot of these little books are about they're rare very historical and yet there are so many lessons in them that we can take away for ourselves and so we left off Amos last time so we're on book 30 how many books are there in the Old Testament well that's in the whole Bible what about the Old Testament thirty-nine how many books are in the New Testament twenty-seven and then there's 66 and all the in all the Bible okay Amos it was written by Amos he was a prophet this is a minor prophet but only because the book is smaller than the other major prophets and the word Amos means a burden barrier and Amos carried this great burden for the people of northern Israel don't you know that God sometimes puts different burdens in our heart for different people for different nations Paul has a burden his heart for the nation for Africa the continent of Africa my dad had a burden in his heart for India but God puts burdens in our hearts for different things and so Amos had a burden for the people of northern Israel he was a shepherd who preached coming judgment to the people because of their sinfulness and his message also was directed to to the people who were mistreating people God didn't like the fact that some these Israelites were mistreating people they oppress the poor they misused wisdom and they women they misuse with women and they lived with no sense of justice and so Amos was addressing those issues we see Jesus because Amos presents him as the restorer of his people I love the scripture in Amos 9 11 that says this David's God said I will restore David's fallen shelter I will repair its broken walls and restore its ruins and I will rebuild it as it used to be you see I love that because God will restore what is broken in our lives he is a restorer of the broken he is a repair of those things that need to be repaired the takeaway is this I chose the fact that the Israelites were mistreating the people and that God didn't like that and he he called them out on it and it shows us that God it is very important to God how we treat people God wants us to treat people right there his creation whether they serve him or not they are his creation and he loves every person and he's not willing that any person perish with it all come to repentance and so when Jesus was here he showed us example he went around doing good to all people the Bible says he healed he lifted people he encouraged people he showed mercy so he is our example I think about my dad I have a few examples I've added a few examples tonight so I'm probably not going to get as far as I want to get but anyway I think about my dad how he always told our family and especially our volunteers in the church people are the most important thing to Jesus and so you have to treat them right and you have to treat them with unqualified courtesy treat everybody equally and that's the heart of God right there I was thinking about how my friend and I did my dip my friend Debra and I were up we were in a place in Richmond Texas called mud alley it's it's sort of a hard place a play that in need and Deborah had done out riches there for years and so she asked me to go with her and just walk the streets and go door-to-door and check on many of the people that had gotten saved under the outreach ministry there and so we just went door-to-door we saw so many people that had been saved and then we were able to minister to other people but when we were driving out of that area I noticed five young men just hanging out by the street and as soon as we drove past them it's like Jesus just drew me to them and I said dear I said what do you think those guys are doing out there she said I don't know and I said let's go talk to him and so we just pulled over we got outside we got out of our car and it was there was a public place there and and so we we went up to him and one of them was so high that he couldn't even he could hardly stop moving he was just so high and they were really excited to see two girls get out and talk to him to tell you the truth but when we got out and we saw how they were reacting we we told them immediately God spoke to us to stop and talk to you and is there anything we can pray with you about well it's amazing because they all got very serious and one by one one said my mother has cancer another one says I'm concerned about this I'm concerned about my sister and then one of them says I've got cancer all in my body and we were able just we just made a circle we prayed for each and every one of them I laid hands on the sick and then Deborah just led up all of them into the Salvation prayer every one of them accepted Jesus and that awesome but what drew us to those men it was the compassion of Jesus and see because Jesus loves all people he cares for all people and you know what he works through us that's the way God works on this earth he works through us and so you know I just want to encourage you to always treat people right and be sensitive to the Holy Spirit and what God may want to do through you 31 Obadiah Obadiah is also a minor prophet Obadiah is has only one chapter it's the smallest book in the Old Testament and little is known about this prophet but his theme is judgment on Edom because they were cruel to Judah now I'm going to explain who the were in just a moment but over Di's one of a one of three prophets who spoke judgment on the surrounding nations because God didn't take well those who opposed his people God's like this big papa bear and he doesn't like it when people touch his people amen when they come against him and so he would he spoke to those nations who opposed God's people you can see Jesus in several ways and I'll just mention to them but you can see them as judge of the nations you can see them as savior of Israel and as possessor of the kingdom now I always give you verses there so you can go back and look those up yourself and you can see that but I just want to mention them to you because we don't have time to talk about each one the takeaway is this do you remember Esau the twin brother of Jacob remember how in a moment's fleeting time he sold his birthright to his brother well then they were at odds for many years well the were the descendants of Edom and they had been cruel to Judah and so we can see that there's a still remaining pride of remaining contempt for the Jews being passed down through that same family line is it that interesting and so God sent Obadiah to rebuke them and and warned them about how they mistreated his people and you know we we know the Bible says pride goes before a fall amen well the did not listen and they fail and that nation disappeared into history and that was the line of Esau I thought that was very interesting okay this is a reminder to stay humble before the Lord even when people mistreat you or do you wrong but it's also a reminder to break the generational curses that have been sent down through your family you know the didn't have to be bitter they didn't have to hold that contempt for the Jews but they chose to and you may have you know things in your family line that have been passed down but you know what the buck stops with you you are a believer you can stop those things and you can stop those generational curses by saying I choose Jesus I choose to let those things go and in the name of Jesus I break those generational curses and they will no longer be in my family line amen so you can do that yourself when you do that you set your family and the generations to come on a brand-new path I say this to people you're a pioneer if you'll do that you're a true pioneer if you will change the legacy of your family I'm telling I feel the anointing right now when I say that somebody needs to hear that Europe pioneer you think you have to live with what's been dealt to you but you don't have to live that way you can change your gender your family and the generations to come if you will take a stand for Jesus you'll see what a pioneer you are amen okay let's talk about Jonah most of us know about Jonah because there's some good stories in the Bible huh some of them are a little bit more boring but then there's Jonah and the name Jonah means which is the type of the holy spirit and God told the prophet Jonah to go speak to the people of minima but instead of obeying God he ran from God simply because he didn't think the Gentile people deserved God to mercy in that interesting listen we have to remember we are not the judge God is and and father remember this God is a just God he doesn't think like we do he's a just God he's a fair God he's a loving and kind God and Jonah didn't run long because he got swallowed by that great fish remember that and so he had a Jesus moment in that fish and he got God got his attention and in the belly of that well he began to repent truly repent and he began to praise God and he said yes to God I'll obey you and when Jonah finally preached God's message to the city of Nineveh do you know that every one of them accepted Jesus every one of them turned to the Lord I mean it was a great revival and there are three doctrines that are taught in this book and and that's this resurrection we see that through Jonah genuine repentance and God's loving-kindness listen when you genuinely repent you have genuine restoration amen you can see Jesus in this because Jesus himself quoted from the Book of Jonah and he said for as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth and that amazing so that story was a picture of Jesus death resurrection and then his commission to go in all the world and preach the gospel and listen what did Jesus say to Jew and Gentile see he wants every creature to hear the gospel so gern Jonah learned that salvation is for every believer and that God's not willing that anyone perish but that all hear the gospel the takeaway is this simply don't run from God don't run from God obey Him the first time he speaks to you and you will save yourself from a lot of trouble disobedience hurts us more than anyone else but let me tell you something it also hurts those around us your husband or wife and you're in disobedience believe me your family will suffer and we see that because Jonah he jumped a ship on a ship running from God and because he was on this ship there was this great storm because of his disobedience and and the men said what what's going on and Jonah said it's me you know I'm running from God and this is my my judgment and he said throw me over and they said no we don't want to do that but then they almost lost their lives and he said no throw me over if you want to live and so that's when they threw him over and God not only spared their lives he spared Jonah's life he had that big fish there to pick him up but you see it shows us that our disobedience can cause storms in other people's lives and it can cause storms in our own lives and so the Bible says to obey is better than sacrifice so let's be people who obey quickly amen 33 Micah was written by Micah a minor prophet Micah means to like Jehovah and he was termed a prophet to the poor because he ministered to the poor he was a prophet in Judah but he dealt primarily with Samaria and the Gentile nations reproving them for their sins and Micah also spoke of the future restoration of the kingdom of the Messiah and the great event to the latter's latter days and I just had to keep saying it's amazing that all these prophecies are in here and and then we see them come to pass in the New Testament so these are very important books that that speak of things to come this book is a compilation of Michael Micah's sermons and we see Jesus because Micah spoke of the hope of Jesus Israel's deliverer who deliverer who would restore his people and I love this because we also see Jesus in Micah 5:2 it Micah predicted the birth of Jesus 700 years before Jesus came that's amazing he said in that scripture but you Bethlehem though you are small among the clans of Judah out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel whose origins are from old from ancient times now do you know what that means Jesus was with God in the beginning he was with him when he created these worlds and so that was a prophetic word the takeaway is this Micah 6:8 the Lord has told you what is good and what he requires of you now you see so many times we said God what do you want me to do what do you require me he says it real clearly to do justly to love mercy and to walk humbly before your God these words are words to live by and I think really something we should pray you know father God helped me to live justly just like you do help me to see people like you do help me to love mercy like you do help me to be merciful if you've been merciful to me and help me to walk in humility help me to walk humbly not only before you but before me you know not long ago somebody did something to me that really bothered me and I don't get bothered real real easy but I was bothered on this and when I lay down to go to sleep I just said Lord why does this bother me so much why am I so offended by this and and he just immediately spoke to me and this doesn't always happen and he said because they undermined your authority and I thought what that's right that's exactly what they did they undermined my authority and they went behind my back and did something and I said well what how should I handle this and he says you're gonna forgive them right now and when he said that I said okay I'm gonna forgive them right now in my bed and I just forgave them and I'll let that go and I I think it's not always an easy thing to do I mean it kept coming back to my mind and I kept saying no I forgave them I'm not gonna hold on to that offense I'm gonna just show mercy like show me and I'm gonna not live with that offense and that's how you just that's just an example of how you can walk it out practically in your everyday life did you know that the Bible says that with humility comes honour riches wisdom and life think about that with humility comes honor riches wisdom and life and we when we choose to walk in humility God always will bless you for that 34 the book of name are you learning something okay are you tired of these Minor Prophets okay Nahum written by name and a minor prophet name means compassionate 100 years after Jonah preached to them the Ninevites returned to sin and rebellion and the Prophet Nahum went to them and warn them on God's judgment the people of Nineveh God is seen in this book that was being very slow to wrath and Nineveh ancient Nineveh today Paul is Mosul Iraq isn't that interesting ancient Nineveh Paul was just there ministering to people their medical needs so they repented at one time then they went back into sin God sent name to them and but God was slow to wrath we see Jesus as the compassionate Lamb of God and I gave you the scripture there look there on the mountains the feet of one who brings good news who proclaims peace the you know these prophets were always talking about the coming Messiah giving them good news someone is coming who is going to save you to be your deliverer the takeaway is this I got this from my mother Nahum 1:9 whatever they plot against the Lord he will make a nutter into it affliction will not arise the second time now ever since my mother got the the terrible news that she had cancer deliver in 1981 she began to get healing scriptures and read these scriptures every day and just believe in trust God for her healing course God healed her completely and that was when she was aged 48 today she's 83 sitting here on the front row amen but I had never noticed this scripture before but I heard her to quote it hurt her quote at so many times and and this is the deal she kept declaring that cancer will never again come back to me because God put an utter end to it and so this is the way I want to encourage you whatever you're facing today you will not have to face it again because God is going to put an utter into it in that good - good scripture to believe God to pray and declare number 35 the book of Habakkuk is also a minor prophet written by the Prophet Habakkuk and his name means to be embraced he was not only a prophet and a preacher but he was a poet he was a creative person Habakkuk struggled in his faith you know why he struggled because he saw people doing evil and still prospering he didn't understand why people could live doing sin and they could and they got away with it and he began to have these conversations with God and God answered him and basically said and made it clear to him that despite what it looks like justice would be done and he said for now in the meantime God's people would need to continue to live by faith and so you can't go by appearances you will reap what you said you so evil you'll reap evil but if you keep sowing good seeds and keep following god you're gonna reap reap a great harvest you can see Jesus in this book because the word salvation appears three times and it is the root word from which the name Jesus is derived isn't that interesting Jesus is also mentioned as you're anointed I've never seen that about in the Bible I know that Christ means The Anointed but here he's mentioned as you're anointed and I just took that as he my Anointed One he has mine he is yours he is your anointed Jesus amen the takeaway is this it seemed to Habakkuk that the people were prospering but I really already said it I got ahead of myself but appearances always don't tell the whole story and so you will reap what you sow and so don't compare your life to those you think are getting away with things don't don't look at other people and think well you know I'm serving God I'm doing all this stuff and look at them they're just having a great party it with their whole life they don't go to church they don't read their Bible but you know what you don't know how they live you don't know what it's like in their own mind and in their own skin in their own home but in Jesus we have such perfect peace 36 is this definite written by Zephaniah he is a minor prophet and his name means Jehovah hides and through this prophet God warned that he will judge Israel and the surrounding nations but he would also restore them back to peace and justice and Zephaniah warnings brought great revival among the people of Israel in Jerusalem but unfortunately the nation's leaders totally ignored Nord this ignored this warning Jesus can be seen because F&I concludes his book by writing about Jesus the Messiah reigning in Zion and of course Zion stands for Jerusalem the takeaway is this Zephaniah 3 16 and 17 says do not fear Zion do not let your hands hang limp the Lord your God is with you the mighty warrior who saves and I just wanted to say this to you God is saying to you tonight don't hang your head down and be discouraged don't hang your head down and be dismayed because your mighty warrior is with you and he will save you and he will deliver you that's another scripture to hang on to amen say he's my mighty warrior 37 Haggai written by Hagi ie it's a minor profit book and Haggai means festal or celebration and 16 years after returning from captivity the jews were just really slow to rebuild the temple remember last time we learned that it had been destroyed after Solomon built it and so they came back they're not focused on restoring the temple and so God is trying to stir them up through Haggai and he preached a fiery series of sermons designed to stir that nation up to get back to rebuilding the temple where the presence of God was and Hagee I pointed us to Jesus as he talked about the future glory of the temple you know calling him the desire of all nations Jesus is the desire of all nations and the glory of the temple you know it's not the temple it's who's in the temple and see that's where the that's where the presence of God dwelt he was the glory in the temple but now he is the glory in you because you're the temple of the holy spirit see things were different back then but now he dwells in you we are his temple and he is the glory in you the takeaway is this put God first and foremost in your life bottom line keep the main thing the main thing amen and the main thing is Jesus the people in Haggai put themselves first they neglected the things of God and he called them out on it and and I remember the words of Jesus that he said seek ye first the kingdom of God and all these things will be added unto you see when you put him first your life goes better and he adds those things to you that you need and that you desire I will add ok Zechariah written by Zechariah a minor prophet Zechariah means Jehovah remembers I love that and his messages were full of hope that God would remember his promises let me tell you some that God remembers his promises always the ones you're hanging on to the ones you're praying he remembers his promises but the the prophets Araya encouraged the people to continue rebuilding the temple because they were preparing the way for their Messiah now I'm just gonna stop and say as you do what God has called you to do you're preparing the way for Jesus to return amen Zechariah also records prophetic visions that show what's happening behind the scenes so it's an interesting book he speaks of Jesus both of his first and second comings if you'll read the scriptures that I provided for you and then the takeaway I love Zechariah 4:6 where God says it's not by might nor by power but by my spirit says the Lord and so that just shows us that within him we live and move and have our being amen and we don't live on our own strength we don't work in our own strength we don't do what God has called us to do in our own strength we do it in the power of the Holy Spirit it's not by might nor by power but by my spirit says the Lord Malik how we finally got to the end of the Old Testament last but not least Malachi the the Prophet was a minor prophet Malachi means messenger and God had been faithful to Israel but they continued to live disconnected from him so God sent the Prophet Malachi as his messenger to warn the people of coming judgment but he also promises the relief of a savior in the future and I love that because God would always gave with a warning the hope that Jesus was coming he always gave them hope you can see Jesus first in second Advent his comings they're clearly described in Malachi and also Malachi speaks of John the Baptist who will prepare the way before the Lord interesting scriptures the takeaway is this even though Israel was very inconsistent in their relationship with the Lord he was God was very patient and merciful with them anytime they repented anytime they returned to him God was merciful and he was gracious because that's just the way God is God is a good God he's a merciful God but you know what that's no way to live because when you disobey God you know you will suffer much Israel suffered much because of their disobedience and it's just better to live in communion with God as we've already said and avoid the traps of the enemy in your life you know when you live close to Jesus he's going to watch over and protect you when you get away from him you fall prey to the enemy after Malachi there were 400 years of silence in the Bible but life went on life continued on Malachi was the last prophet before John the Baptist and John the Baptist came as an as another prophet and he introduced Jesus remember that now during that time that those 400 years of silence you know you think well nothing happened well a lot happened because we learned in history that because of Israel's disobedience they continued in captivity the Israelites were taken captive by the Assyrians and then by the Babylonians by the Persians and then the Persians allowed the Jews to go back to their home to have and gave them religious freedom and then the Persians were defeated by Alexander the Great and the Israelites were now under Greek control and so things remain this way until Alexander died and at the open of the New Testament the Romans had been in control and the Jews were their captives and so that's what happened during those years of silence and so we're going to get into the New Testament now just for a little while but the New Testament has 27 books and they're separated into three different divisions let's look at them real quick there's five books of history which is the four Gospels and the Acts the 21 epistles which means letters my dad used to think of an epistle was married to an apostle [Music] those are Romans they're Jude and then there's one book of prophecy which is revelation the first four books that we call the Gospels were written about Jesus about his life and about his ministry as you already know each writer depicted Jesus from a different point of view but theologians call Matthew Mark and Luke the synoptic Gospels that word just means similar those three books are the synoptic gospel Gospels because they are very similar and then there's the book of John because he presents a very different look of Jesus it's very interesting so let's get into the you know few books in the New Testament before the time runs out for T the Gospel of Matthew written by Matthew it's a history book Matthew means the gift of Jehovah and his purpose was to show the promised Messiah from the Old Testament prophecies there are more than 50 references to the Old Testament in the book of Matthew so he is showing the Jews that this Messiah this Jesus that came he is a fulfillment of the prophecies that we've read about and you know just an interesting fact the word Messiah and the Hebrew and the word Christ in Greek they both mean anointed so Jesus is the Anointed One we see Jesus in Matthew because he presents him as the promised King of the Jews you know in chapter 2 the wise men were searching for Jesus and what did they see say they said where is the one who has born the king of the Jews and so Matthew presents him as the king of the Jews the takeaway I chose Matthew 16 18 and 19 there's so much good in every one of these books but anyway this is a brief overview but Jesus said to Peter to his disciples he said and I tell you that you are Peter and on this rock I will build my church in the gates of hell or Hades will not overcome it I give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven now Peter and Greek is Petrus and it means a large piece of rock and Jesus used his name as a metaphor only because he goes on to say and on this rock I will build my church but when he used the word Rock the second time it was a different Greek word for Petra meaning a huge rock like the Rock of Gibraltar so this shows us that the church is built on Jesus and he is our rock amen and we have a firm foundation and the Bible says the gates of Hell will never prevail against it and so it's interesting how he used those words and and so this is how it comes back to you you are the church and your life is built on Jesus and he is the rock and he is a firm foundation and the gates of Hell will never ever prevail against you in your life amen amen you have to make the Bible personal to you you are the church say I am the church amen not only that I want to point this out you have power to bind and loose on this earth you say what does that mean well to bind means to declare that something is unlawful in your life it is improper in your life and so anything that Satan brings into your life is unlawful and you have the authority to stop his plans by using the name of Jesus and you have the authority to loose the blessings of God into your life so that's God has given you authority and when he says the gates of Hell will not prevail against you he means in your personal life Satan has no authority over you and you can bind his power and you can resist him in the name of Jesus 41 the Gospel of Mark written by Mark also known as John Mark and it's a history book and mark means a hammer and his book sort of reflects that because it's a brief it's appointed it's very pointed and it says if he is hammering the word into us and mark was written primarily for Gentile readers and in particular in Roman and to the Romans and he desired to print present Jesus as a servant as a sacrifice and the savior of all men and Mark presents Jesus as the Son of man ministering and giving his life for the world because we read the scripture that says for even the Son of man came not to be served but to serve and give his life as a ransom for many think about that no King comes to be to serve people a king comes to be served but Jesus is not like any other King he came to serve us amen and we're to be like Jesus that's powerful when you think about it the take away Jesus gives every believer a commission in mark 16:15 2:18 is called the Great Commission and it's the great mission of the church now you are the church so it's the great mission of the church it says going to all the world and preach the gospel to all creation did you know that every believer deserves to hear the gospel every believer deserves to hear the good news and I remember one time that my dad had a dream years and years ago and he had this terrible dream where my brother Joel and my sister Tamra were drowning in an ocean and in this dream nobody was rescuing them no one was trying to save them and and they were going to die and he woke up and in the midst of that dream and he said god what is that because he thought it had to do with with Tamra and Joel and God spoke to him and he said son my people all over the world are dying every day and no one has told them about Jesus no one has rescued them and so from that moment on my dad just got in his heart of a vision that he was going to do everything he could to evangelize the world here in Houston all over the United States and all over the world and he did he preached on television he sent his videos all over the world he went to India we sent books we turdus have Bibles we did everything and you know we still meet people that say you know I was saved I met someone the other day he's a pastor of a church from Africa he's a pastor Church in Boston now and he told me that his father got saved and his mother left him and but his father started reading books by my dad and other ministers his mother left with the kids because she thought she was crazy and so where she was she saw a video of my dad preaching and while she was watching my dad she got saved she went back to her husband they reunited and they became pastors in that amazing Malawi it was in Malawi Africa and he said but that's not just our mission those of us who are in the ministry it's your mission every believer deserves to hear the word of Jesus you know nobody told my my husband about Jesus until he finally met a believer when he was an older teenager I my best friend ever she said no one told me about Jesus and she said one time somebody a Christian ministry came to her school and she said I was so drawn to him but I didn't understand it and she said I would have accepted Jesus as somebody would have just taken me by the hand and said look this is what he's talking about so you can live in the u.s. and not know about Jesus and you know you have a mission a commission to tell those you know about the Lord to share the gospel to love the gospel and not only that we have a responsibility to help send the gospel and as you you know support Lakewood and other ministries that's what you're doing here you're allowing the Gospel message to go all over the world and you know if you would just start there because so many times were concerned about what do we do what do I do with my life what does God's plan for my life well do what you know to do you know start telling people about Jesus start fulfilling the Great Commission and then God will show you what else to do amen he will reveal his plan for your life amen okay the Gospel of Luke and we'll I think we're gonna have to stop here but let's go over it Luke means it's a history but by dr. Luke we have a doctor in the house Luke means like giving he was a physician and a Gentile believer it never dawned on me that the gospel was written this gospel was written primarily for the Greeks the Greeks put a great deal of emphasis on man and so Luke emphasized the humanity of Jesus Jesus came to minister and show compassion to all people regardless of their status in society and I'm going to spend a little bit more time on Lucas it's so good but here's some interesting facts Luke is the most thorough account of the life of Jesus several miracles of Jesus are recorded only in Luke several parables are recorded only in Luke two of them being the prodigal son in the good samaritan jesus ancestry his past is traced back to adam it is believed that Luke is the only Gentile writer in the Bible didn't know that Luke exhibits a professional interest in medical matters of course because he was a physician the word angel is used 23 times in this book there are more glimpses of the unseen world in this gospel than any other book and so this is something else that's interesting there are four hymns recorded in this book there the last hymns of the Hebrew and the Hebrews and they were the first Christian hymns Mary's hymn of praise to the Lord Zechariah song appraised the song of the angels and the song of Simeon if you look at those scriptures you'll see you'll recognize those him some of the first hymns of the Christian Church Luke is also called the gospel of women hood womanhood and all the women said he talks a lot about the women who followed Jesus and I won't mention who they are but a lot of women ok Jesus Luke presents Jesus as the perfect Son of Man the noble teacher the friend and helper of mankind did you know that Jesus referred to himself mostly as the Son of Man that was his favorite way to refer to himself the takeaway is Lucas considered the gospel of Prayer it recorded two parables on persevering prayer and it has nine instances of Jesus praying and Jesus said in Luke 18 once men ought always to pray and not give up and then he goes on to tell this parable about this woman who was being mistreated and she went to a judge in town and and she kept saying to him vindicate me because he has mistreated me and that Judge just didn't pay any attention to her but after a while he got so frustrated and irritated with her he just said you know what I'm gonna vindicate her and I'm gonna grant her justice because she is driving me crazy and she won't quit coming to me and so he granted her justice and then Jesus said this you need to learn a lesson from this if the unjust judge granted her request how much more will your heavenly Father give justice how much more will your heavenly Father give justice listen to his chosen children who cry out to him day and night he will not put them off but he will grant them justice quickly that's powerful listen God is nothing like the unjust judge you are his chosen chosen child he will hear your prayers he will answer you quickly and he will grant you justice that's what God said so don't give up on the things you're praying about never give up listen your prayers are making a difference amen okay I'm gonna go through John because I can't stand to not get through all the Gospels the book of John written by John it's a history book John means Jehovah is gracious and he shows us that man of Galilee was in fact God and this gospel was written for the Christian Church and really for the world as a whole because you see Scriptures unlike any other scriptures for God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life John was the first follower of John the Baptist I didn't know that of course he left John for Jesus John was a cousin of Jesus he was one of the three in his inner circle remember it was Peter Peter Peter James and John he was the disciple whom Jesus loved he thought he was God's favorite and he was and we all are amen remember that when he was on the cross Jesus said to John I want you to take care of my mother it was that John and in John G he gives us the seven im's of Jesus that are so powerful and I'll just mention them quickly Jesus said I am the bread of life I am the light of the world I am the door I am The Good Shepherd the resurrection and the life I am the way the truth and the life and I am the true vine I mean we could preach a message on each one of those but it really reveals who Jesus is and the takeaway is this Luke 4 is a powerful chapter about how Jesus depended on the Holy Spirit in this everyday life and the Bible says that he was full of the spirit and he was led by the spirit and he went in to the wilderness to fast and pray for 40 days and during that time Satan showed up and began to tempt him but Jesus full of the Spirit he resisted the enemy and remember what he said it is written Satan it is written and he any quoted the Word of God and so he came out of that time of temptation victorious he came out and the Bible says that when he came out he walked in the power of the Holy Spirit and I'm telling you something there's something about going through a hard time and a temptation and a struggle with the enemy and when you win you will come out in the power of the Holy Spirit you will come out a different person Amen Jesus win and he was led by the spirit he was full of the Spirit but he went up another notch he was he walked in the power of the Holy Spirit and he began his ministry after that time and so let's see where am i I got lost hold on that's it that's it uh-huh he came out this is what I was gonna say when he came out he began his ministry and he began to set the captives free and that's what God has called you to do he's called you to set the captives free Amen okay I want to tell you this I didn't recognize that I will have to be out of town next Monday so I'm going I asked Jeremy to come
