hey everybody welcome back to the channel sabaton army we're at it again uh i did a live a little while back we did a live reaction to uh the unkillable soldier and uh during that live at the end i met with some of the folks in the chat and they told me some of the songs that i need to bump up the list we went through the list took a look at it and everything and uh one of those songs was the last stand everybody's been telling me this is one of their favorite songs so we did it we bumped it up to the top of the list and tonight is the night we are going to be checking out the last stand um this was requested by kim eklund uh one of my patrons ignorance and uh it was reminded by anecho during the live uh i forget who the gentleman was who she was telling me requested it but uh i naturally shout out you know i like you you're the best all right so we are going to be checking out four videos tonight normally we do three tonight we're doing four i got the official sabaton lyric video the official sabaton music video that we're going to be watching the sabaton history lesson as we do here in these deep dives and we're going to wrap it up with a live performance in budapest so uh strap in is going to be a long one i'll try not to pause it too much but uh obviously you don't tune into reaction channels to just watch me watch the videos you want to hear my opinions on this stuff so i will i'll pause it i'll pause it when i need to so you guys know how we do it here touch your reactions all right if you guys are new here and you uh like uh reactions to sabaton and music from all around the world uh consider during the watching this video i'm not going to say do it now obviously you want to sample the goods so uh you know watch this video if you like the format that we do here hit that subscribe button down below become a subscriber i appreciate all my subscribers you guys been helping the channel grow like crazy we are creeping up on 10 000 subscribers here soon and uh you know obviously i couldn't do it without you guys because uh i'm just a dude sitting behind a camera so thank you to all my subscribers thank you to everybody that's been commenting and requesting songs and helping me out with all the extra history and stuff behind all this music and uh that's enough rambling oh can't forgive my patrons my patrons if you uh you'd like supporting small channels there's a link up here in the corner where you can join the patreon i got a bunch of patrons over there that are helping me uh help the channel grow buy new equipment buy new software all that kind of stuff and uh i love my patrons shout out to all my patrons all right that's enough rambling we're already about three minutes into this video so uh let's go ahead and jump into the first video which is going to be the official lyric video by sabaton for the song the last stand i have no clue what this is about so it's all going to be new to me here we go [Music] so [Music] so [Music] is 189 is is all right i still i'm not quite sure what this is it sounds like it's got some religious undertones to it uh i do remember something in the comments about there's a song about the uh the guards of the vatican maybe maybe this is that song that somebody was talking about there's a song about the guards at the vatican so i'm gonna keep listening to it and see if that is actually the truth so uh here we go next verse [Music] [Music] all right i got to say something real quick so if you're uh regular to my channel you know that in the past i've i've beat up on sabaton a little bit for some of their older songs not having good cadence not having good rhyming schemes this song has very good cadence and very good rhyming schemes especially this verse right here very well put together rolls off the tongue real nicely hits the ears real nicely and uh this is not going to be one of those songs that i criticized for that so so far i'm liking this song a lot come and tell the story [Music] national that's a great all that just great fun to sing fun to listen to that's another great verse this is going to be this is one of those songs that's going to creep up on my list real quick i can tell right now [Music] [Music] [Music] something real funny here so on this verse right here at the end it says come until at the bottom at the very bottom of the screen the last pieces come and tell their story again it says here on the lyric video but in the song it doesn't say again it jumps to the next verse and then puts again on the end of the next verse i just find it funny that the official sabaton lyric video has a word in there that's not actually part of the lyrics the the again is what i'm talking about the last last word here all right so as expected it said come and tell the swiss guard story against swiss guards swiss guards the swiss guards aren't the ones who guard the vatican are they i would imagine they'd be italian uh i don't know i guess i have to wait till i get to the sabaton history to get the full man my hat just cannot get straight let me see how's that look that's better i got a weird shaped head okay oh all right so let's not waste any time i want to check out this official music video see what that's about and this is from sabaton so this should be legit this is we don't get too many official lyric videos but uh this is one of them so here we go the official music video for the last stand by sabaton [Music] okay [Music] [Applause] i know sabaton's gone through a lot of different versions of band members and so on through the years i believe this might be my favorite version here with chris tommy and par and uh oh what is godly man the drummer is always the one that i forget honest honest honest maybe honest and i know he's married to floor from from nightwish stop typing stop typing all right and uh and of course you are keem i believe this five-member group right here is my favorite uh version of sabaton at least you know i might be wrong but these i like these guys together [Music] in the surface of heaven they're protecting the holy land [Music] is what i remember what i've seen of the guards at the vatican they do dress like this so maybe the swiss cars do guard the vatican i'm gonna look like an idiot obviously you guys all know already you're like screaming at your screens of course they do you idiot i don't know i'll know after the history we'll and see the holy land [Music] [Music] come sword [Music] i love power man he's kind of a pear sorry i love pear he uh he's kind of happily just walks around playing the bass both sides he's always got a smile on his face looking happy he's uh he's just got a good spirit about him i love it and i always love when chris and tommy play these uh dual solos like this uh harmonizing with each other i'm gonna back it up i wanna hear it again oh my god i committed the sin of pausing during a solo let's let's uh go back and fix that here we go [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] it would have been cool right there if they dropped out the music and did that and had the crowds sing along with it that that part of the song that would have been really a really cool way to uh interact with the crowd right there uh i don't know maybe that'll happen on the live we'll see let me back up five seconds here we go [Music] [Music] [Music] very nice very nice i've heard this song twice now and it's already burrowing its way into my my memory uh it's uh it's gonna be one of those added to the list as soon as i stop recording here all right so uh for those of you who don't like sticking around for the sabaton history bye appreciate stopping by don't forget to come on back but uh the rest of you we're gonna jump into this history it's about 16 minutes long that's not too bad and uh see what this is all about this is called the last stand the 1527 sack of rome okay so i'm thinking i might still be on track here it says rome we're talking about the vatican we're talking about swiss guards i'm pretty sure i'm putting it all together based on comments and lyrics and all that stuff i'm pretty sure that's what this is about i've never heard this story before uh those of you who haven't been here before i am not a religious man at all i am an atheist and uh but i do enjoy some religious music because uh there's a lot of it out there and it's got to be some good stuff and this this might be one of those songs that's about a religious topic that uh that i can you know sing along to even though i'm a dirty filthy heathened atheist so uh sabaton history number 44 the last stand here we go i'll make sure the volume is right here we go i'm indeed neidel and i'm part lionheart and i'm here to talk about the crusades they were so exciting times and uh i can't imagine the last stand in the crusader times it was like so damn cool to be a crusader at that time crusaders they are the most important thing in some other life crusaders crusades all of their crusades you say and more for sakes we're gonna do more crusades crusades hey did you know that the knights of the templar order might have founded switzerland when pope clement v declared in the early 1300s that all templar knights were heretics and should be killed many of them fled france taking their huge treasury with them the templars shrewd bankers may have brought their treasure and their military expertise to a loose confederation of poor farmers just over the french border well okay that may actually be just a myth but what if it was true right i mean i mean look at the swiss flag quite similar to the templars cross if you swap the colors right just saying anyhow i will get back to factual history now over 200 years later too rome november 15 23. the whole vatican seemed like like one big building site trying to reinvent itself with classical palaces and basilicas the city was quite cosmopolitan where pilgrims and travelers mingled with people from all over europe but the mood just now was tense hushed voices spoke of the ongoing deadlock within the conclave of cardinals trying to choose a new pope busy feet shuffled under the ceiling of the sistine chapel where michelangelo's new ceiling frescoes barely got any attention so focused was everyone on the decision at hand several seemingly suitable cardinals were proposed but none could win and it looked like it would all come down to the two candidates supported by the two great powers in the european world okay for centuries italy and the vatican had been the real life chess board for the ambitions of kings by now a new crisis was developing between francis the first of france and holy roman emperor charles v charles was pretty much the most powerful ruler in europe since the days of charlemagne 700 years earlier and that certainly went to his head he saw himself not only as divinely appointed ruler but as the one and only christian ruler of europe whose duty it was to dominate france and then unite christendom under his banner giulio de medici was the papal candidate charles supported on november 16 he was elected and became pope clement vii everything seemed perfect but as it would soon turn out clement the seventh papacy would actually be one of the worst in history and this is really saying something but it began by clement trying to be a good pope pope leo the 10th clement's predecessor had been very popular in the italian peninsula and for a simple reason he behaved less like a pope and more like an old roman emperor he was a lavish spender and a playboy who threw wild parties in extravagant banquets unlike leo clement wanted to reign with scholars and clerics with with fasts and actual religious obligations surprisingly this made him deeply unpopular with the clergy in rome now now this was a problem but but he still had the emperor on his side right i mean all he had to do was not agitate his royal benefactor which he promptly did charles was fighting a war against france in northern italy and rumors reached his ears that clement had been secretly in contact with the cities of venice and milan to form a defensive pact with rome in case things went bad for the holy roman empire charles was a bit irritated by that backdoor dealing but okay fair enough you know plans for the future right okay he understood but when secret peace negotiations between clement and france were suddenly not so secret anymore charles was furious this this was outright treason fuming with anger he even proclaimed that this this martin luther guy and all the news actually might have had a point with his hatred for the papacy remember we are right at the beginning of the reformation and luther had only been condemned as an outlaw by charles two years ago okay after the decisive battle of pavia in 1525 where the french received a complete mauling by the imperial forces with francis even being captured charles gave his commander in italy constable bourbon another task with 5 000 spanish troops he should go south and have a little chat with the pope but georg von funzburg the famous german military commander would rather see clement hanging for his treachery and he himself raised over ten thousand german now check out how these guys are dressed that was like normal back in the day everybody walking around dressed like that pantaloons fancy hats i'm speechless out of his own pocket and while the spaniards were relatively disciplined the lands connected were emphatically not soldiers for hire loyal only to their paid and many won over by martin luther's words they were all too eager to get their hands on the wealth of the catholic church in early 1527 bourbon's five thousand spanish and frozenberg's ten thousand germans linked up with other mercenaries eager for loot but then frozenberg suffered a stroke and returned north now bourbon stranded in italy and trying to control both companies for which he didn't really have the money was left with only one option moved swiftly forward and loot rome so by may the fifth around twenty thousand imperials were knocking on rome's front door the spirito gate verb himself isn't this the roman empire i'm curious why they're attacking their own empire maybe i'm just not understanding this correctly i mean i know the vatican is a separate from uh italy okay i'm a little confused still wearing a bright white i mean i understand he's explained very well why they're doing what they're doing they obviously are pissed off about the the pope making a peace treaty with france when they're in the middle of a war with france but uh they're like screw this we're gonna go uh kick down the door kill everybody and take all the money you know the christian thing to do cloak over his armor ordered his troops to build ladders and scale the walls they were fired upon by aquabusiers and light artillery and took heavy losses see fortified cities could not be easily stormed at the time not without heavy artillery and bourbon's army had none and while the garrison of rome defended its walls pope clement could still rely on the elite soldiers of the italian black bands and his personal protectors the 189 men strong swiss guard swiss mercenaries were extraordinarily good soldiers and highly valued all across europe but while the defenders were busy pouring boiling liquid onto the massive attackers a dense fog suddenly fell it became so thick that the men could barely see each other and the defenders on the walls were were firing blindly realizing his chance bourbon ran forward holding one of the ladders himself and urging his troops onward but he was hit and killed instantly news of his death spread rapidly and the initial confusion in the ranks of the attackers turned into a lust for revenge for killing their leader and more importantly their pay master the imperial surged forward and their numbers overwhelmed the defenders with the gates then thrown open for the rest of the imperials the defense of rome collapsed the invaders swarmed over the city and with bourbon dead there was there was no authority to even try to restrain them if that was even possible by this point the black bands were routed while the swiss guard gathered at the obelisk in front of saint peter's readying themselves for a last stand near the teutonic cemetery it was their duty to fight and die for the pope's safety and so they did armed with halberds and swords in their hands and faith in their hearts they waited for the final battle on the steps of saint peter's stand firm therefore having girded your loins with truth and having put on the breastplate of righteousness and having shot your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace in addition to all taking up the shield of faith not that much is known about the actual fighting heavily outnumbered they stood true to their vows and formed a defensive wall of haliburs in front of saint peter's in a fight they could not hope to win the men of the swiss guard were gradually overwhelmed and slaughtered still their sacrifice gave the pope enough time to escape through a secret passage accompanied by 42 survivors of the 189 they ran across the passato de borgo up to the castel sant'angelo more and more of the guard died along the way fending off the pursuing imperials the last few still standing made it into the castello with the pope and then they could fire heavy artillery and falconettes into the mass of attackers preventing the castello from being overwhelmed the pope and those closest to him were safe thanks to the sacrifice of the swiss guard [Music] that might be my favorite line in this as far as rhyme scheme goes the heaven and uh 1527 the way they rhyme the two of those is beautifully done in this verse i want to back up just to hear it one more time the swiss guard very nice [Music] but a horrible massacre was unfolding down below as the imperials the mercenaries made their way through the city no one was spared their wrath not women not children not the clergy nor the holy sites monks and priests were brutally killed nuns were raped on sacred altars people were cut beaten and branded their teeth and nails pulled out for the information about their valuables sources speak of molten lead being poured down throats severed testicles in the streets tombs were looted holy relics were carried away often by famous artists and noblemen who now served as porters for the soldiers from high above pope clement was forced to look upon the destruction that he was unable to prevent he grew a beard as a sign of mourning it would take until man he grew that beard as a sign of i want to look like somebody else so i could not be killed all these people just came to kill me he would he didn't grow no beard over a sign of mourning he's like man i gotta change my look i can't have nobody knowing who i am these guys coming down here to kill me february 15 28 that the last of the barbaric invaders had left rome what they left behind was a city in ruins with dead by the thousands floating in the river it would take decades for rome to recover the city's population was reduced by some 80 percent and it is seen by many as the end of the italian renaissance but the sack of rome affected more than just the city afterwards clement was no longer able to oppose charles's ambitions and a religious powership away from the pope and toward the emperor had lasting consequences for all of europe for example the pope at charles direction refused to annul the marriage of charles aunt catherine of aragorn to england's henry viii which kicked off the english reformation the split in continental europe between protestant and catholic was made permanent by the sac and martin luther even pointed out christ reigns in such a way that the emperor who persecutes luther for the pope is forced to destroy the pope for luther and while that's a bit general the power of the papacy was diminished afterwards even as the inquisition grew under charles's son philip ii the rift between catholic and protestant would culminate in the 30 years war about which sabaton wrote several songs on the corollas rex album and as for the heroic fighting of the swiss guard it would go down in history as one of the great last stands and left them with the everlasting gratitude of the papacy and to this day the swiss guard still in their traditional garb nearly 500 years later serves as the honor guard of the pope so i know a bunch of people are going to be wondering why we started this episode with crusades crusades crusades crusades but it's not about the crusade no it's a meme it became a meme i guess somebody misunderstood the song or too many people started misunderstanding the song so our lovely sabaton fans instead of bashing them and you know trolling them on the internet made memes about them instead now do you have a whole bunch of memes of yours yeah there's been a few over the years uh i think this one and well the wind is horse oh yeah but that's that's see i knew that one i didn't know this one though it's even sometimes going only in in text form you know and then when the sauce arrived yes my favorite song by sabaton and there are some pretty great memes out there and i've watched a ton of really good uh fan made music uh videos and youtube clips from wing to tsars now i have to check out the uh last stand beams and see what they're all about i don't even need a picture sometimes you are on reddit reading about a totally different topic and then somebody else writes and then the winged resource arrived yeah i know but we've seen that in our comments a lot over over the last what eight months or so we've been doing this show or more than that now um i've been fortunate enough fortunate enough to have a couple of memes done about me uh more with the great war because it was longer than world war ii one and my favorite one and we're going to put a picture of it in here uh we were at the tank museum bovington and david willey the director of the tank museum there very eloquent guy knows his stuff he's popular he's really good camera you know we were doing interviews and stuff and somebody got this photo of it and they put this but um and what about what about the actual song itself beyond the memes beyond the memes what's actually the first song written with the chris uh one of the most popular from that album uh really nice vibe to it i don't know what it is it's really sabaton if you listen to it you know you don't even have to wait for the sort of the vocals to start you will know it's a cyberpunk song only from you mean from this part right here yes that's one that's the part you mean yeah i think you pretty much got that so what could you say i mean not would you want to say but couldn't you say if you had to say could you pick a single 10-second thing of a sabaton song or they that's us and that that defines us or that's my channel no i can but it's not going to be the song it's gonna be victoria okay we are through the gates of hell as we make our way to heaven through the nazi lines and on the choir we can hear that too you know you got man they get they get a bonus today they get all kinds of stuff oh yeah yeah you can you know we're starting to spoil you guys yeah we're generous guys you know it's not too long it's only a couple months away before this channel will be a year old oh yeah that's right i know we started the first episode came out february 7th it feels much shorter than that i can tell you yeah but we've you've done dozens of episodes and we've got dozens more it's kind of cool yeah hopefully we'll be able to do one of every sabotage i would i would like that very much and if you guys have anything special you'd like to see for our one year anniversary when it comes we may as well start talking about that now they're gonna start asking for bloopers you know that oh well we don't have any bloopers do we delete it ultra deleted my life is a blooper okay no we do have some great bloopers i mean none that involve him they only involve power exactly actually that'd be funny if we only released pair bloopers as our whole idea ladies and gentlemen here's power oh that'd be brilliant uh okay well as long as we're getting off topic i suppose that is it for today for savannah history yes it is i guess all right well we'll see you next time rock and roll [Music] all right that's it for this week thank you for watching and hopefully you can help us out here now so we want to keep this going it's a lot of fun to do but it takes some doing so you need to click on notifications you gotta subscribe and if you can we would love it if you become a patreon and help us out so hopefully until we meet again next week all right i uh enjoyed that quite a bit i'm really enjoying this song uh got one last video to watch this is the live performance man i tell you what it was hard for me to figure out which live i wanted to watch uh some of these sabaton songs there's no live versions out there of it but this one had multiple different lives from different venues and different times and i just could not you know without watching the video to see which one's best i can only kind of click through it real quick to get an idea of what the camera angles are and what the crowds are like and that kind of thing or you know i went back and forth between a few different videos about which one to watch and then i just finally decided to uh go with the official sabaton live uh from their channel to uh you know support them i guess uh and this is the one that's filmed from up on stage looking out at the crowd so uh i haven't done one of those in a while so let's go back and reminisce on old times and watch the last stand live from budapest by sabaton here we go the volume [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] sabaton doesn't do much choreo but this is about as close as it gets right here we're gonna line all the guitars up next to each other and we're going to lean back and forth in unison at the beginning of the last stand this is about as close as i get to uh some choreography by sabaton [Music] [Applause] [Music] i'm telling you how can you not smile when you see this man he's just always got a happy look on his face pear loves his job [Music] oh is [Music] you guys let me know if his name is honest i think that's what it is i'm embarrassed if i've been watching sabaton this long and i don't know the drummer's name but i think it's honest [Music] foreign [Music] so [Music] [Applause] is is okay [Applause] all right that wraps up this deep dive into the last stand by sabaton if you enjoyed it hit that like button down below uh i did enjoy it i'm gonna i'm gonna say this song is probably in my top 10. this is probably in my top 10 songs for sabaton and that's saying something because i've been doing reactions to sabaton now for a while and uh and like i say uh this is a religious kind of based religious based song and uh and it's it's i still like it so uh this is a very well written song i really really really enjoyed it so thank you to those who requested it i'm glad i finally got it done you guys have been asking me for a long time and i kept getting this confused with the last battle i was like i did that already i did that already but the last stand and the last battle are two different songs and now they're both done and uh you know gonna move
