i am at the vatican to find members of the clergy who know how to speak platinum [Music] [Music] last time when i was speaking with romans i was using the restored classical pronunciation and that was an important part of the experiment that i was running because i wanted to see if the pronunciation of 2 000 years ago of the language was actually something that speakers of a modern native language descended from latin would be something that could be understandable but this time i'm going to speak in the italian or ecclesiastical pronunciation of latin because naturally that's the standard pronunciation that members of the church used [Music] um in these short conversations my goal was to speak very slowly about easy topics to give the person i was speaking to the chance to understand [Music] is uh [Music] so i found that there are some people who are members of the church that they've studied latin and that they are used to hearing a little bit of spoken latin and they can express themselves to a certain degree but really spoken latin isn't that common as a part of their studies anymore although they've learned how to read it i actually met nearly a dozen members of the clergy at the vatican but these three gentlemen were the only people who were brave enough to partake in the experiment and as you might guess spoken latin is rarely taught or expected in the vatican or in the catholic church at large these days however it still holds a certain weight here father roland and i began speaking in english and he shared some of his insights on the continued importance of latin in the church since the 1960s it's no longer required i think for clergy to speak latin right is business done in the vatican now in fact every official document of these shows comes in really still yeah but yeah every official knowledge of the [Music] so it's still important especially especially some of the documents also some of the books written by joshua [Music] some it's the first language of many of those writings of the church so have you found that your studies in latin have helped you in your career as a father of the church yeah yeah especially i'm also studying philosophy oh excellent last name for very important studies yeah so it's really important in our time today wonderful well thank you for your time having talked to these members of the clergy i found that in the vatican they tend to use italian especially now as a common language of their daily business with english as a secondary one even though they still publish a lot of the documents in fact i think all of the formal and official documents are still published in latin they simply don't use it for communication as was once normal uh some time ago so uh whether that's a good thing or a bad thing i'm not going to to judge i know that i enjoy speaking latin and i love finding other people that like to speak latin too i'm luke and thanks for subscribing [Music] so so so and speak a little bit of latin and they told me that they've studied latin that it is something that's helped them
