the fans in their seats the place is packed cars starting to roll let's hear from the first five rows of today's starting grid brought to you by ally eric almarola tampa florida kyle busch las vegas nevada joey logano middletown connecticut william byron charlotte north carolina kyle larson elk grove california chase elliott dawsonville georgia cole custer ladera ranch california alex bowman tucson arizona eric jones byron michigan ryan blaney high point north carolina and again we know william byron has to go to the back unapproved adjustments so he will start toward the rear of the field zero seven danny hamlin ricky stenhouse junior two drivers look really really good at practice looking for big things out of them a couple drivers have got work to do austin dillon you see him back here in row 14 behind him kurt bush qualifying not as good as they hoped yeah i think another surprise mark trucks junior struggling in his qualifying run he starts all the way back in row 18. we want to check in with rutledge wood rick we got to say hats off to eric moses track president and their team for all the amazing work they did to get all these fans back in here from the temporary grandstands to those huge ones right there at the start finish line we know they did tons of improvements from the lights the sound system the restrooms concession stands not to mention the track prep the walls everything else these fans are here rick they are pumped up and glad to be back racing here at nashville super speedway so many smiles that we see around the racetrack people happy to be able to come back to the racetrack steve let's talk about this unique racetrack yeah can you not smile it's a great track and a great town and you heard jeff burton talk about it earlier it's really unlike anything else we see a mile in the third a little bit of an odd length perhaps more odd though 14 degrees kind of that middle of the road banking not a lot of banking not a lot of grip the longest concrete track now on the nascar circuit a little bit longer than dover a place we've seen racing for years 300 laps will make up the race it's just short of 400 miles we have 90 laps for both or excuse me for stage one 95 for stage two a little bit longer final stage 115 laps i could go about 70 laps on fuel that fuel window yeah 65 70 we'll be keeping our eye on that for more updates before the green flag flies let's go back to parker hey guys and you mentioned kurt bush starting back in that 30th position he talked to me this morning about how that team has really struggled with fire off speed especially early on in the run and that is not a good thing because it also hurts him in traffic well guess what starting back in 30th he's gonna be mired in traffic today they're gonna have to find some long run speed to make some improvements kelly martin truex jr and the 19 team have been to victory lane three times already this season but since their last win at darlington their crew chief james small told me the wheels have kind of fallen off this team's program he's they've fallen in the point standings from second to six he said we've got an uphill battle to climb and they've got one to do in this race as well he got loose and qualified martin schrooks jr showing lined up 35th on the grid marty kelly ryan blaney qualified 12th for today but he will come down pit road for repairs in a moment there is a sharp transition from pit road to the racetrack here at nashville well blaney didn't take that into account and when he went on to the racetrack did damage there you see at the left refender completely flared out they could not race like that it would be like a parachute on the car if they took the green flag to todd gordon got out some binoculars looked at that left rear and he said we have to come down pit road to blaney going to give up that 10th starting position to come and work on it they may take the green but they're going to come down quickly after that to repair that damage steve that's right like a parachute right on that left here if they left it the way it is aerodynamics just so important to the nascar vehicles that left rear right there flared out it's going to hurt both drag and down force a double whammy you don't want that i like this call you hate to do it but no time better than right now come down repair it and uh start from the back still got 300 laps long day and junior we're going to ride along with a few different drivers take us through those yeah daniel suarez has the kid rocks honky tonk cam and daniel has that helmet camera that we all love to be able to see the driver's point of view alex baldwin will have the ally cam uh he has a 360 camera in there turn all the way around anywhere we want inside that car joey logano the ford performance camera he has a driver reversed as long as as well as this roof cam here and then kyle bush starting on the inside of the front row the toyota cam marty hey rick the uh the big thing todd gordon was worried about with ryan blaney's car is that there's a brace right behind that left rear fender they were worried that might have come loose that did not come loose that is still attached steve so that's a big side release for this team they gave some shape back to that left rear and todd gordon just told ryan blaney hey we're going to be fine just keep it in mind right we'll see if it cracks could come loose later in the race that now they had the time to check it out but the fields lined up behind the pace car they couldn't sit there forever it's it's time to go racing rick i've been waiting for this for a long time we've had two great races i expect another one today steve i tell you to shape that thing better look better yeah i mean i would definitely go in the right direction for it what a great side 2x2 eric alvarola won the poll earlier today kyle bush will start on his inside pal bush won the xfinity race yesterday on this very track it has been 37 years since cup racing in nashville and now nascar is [Applause] [Music] immediately making it three wide oh they're all fifth in the corner bowman and chase both almost into the fence losing lots of spots down the back straight away we got one in the fence here quinn hoff and the double zero he had some issues in qualifying had contact with the uh oh we got a tire oh imagine it's off of his goodness hard contact a lot of damage there to the double zero again quinn howe 23 year old out of virginia so he had an issue with him knocked the right front tire off of it an issue got a fence not hard we thought he'd be okay but there's problems with this car get down into turn one on the initial start of the race that looks like a really really hard hit yeah i didn't see what happened to the double zero because as you pointed out we have so much action at the front there we're going to see all the tires already off the car into the fence amr safety team to him immediately he'll grab that right front wheel and they'll have to re-rack and try that again i'm guessing right now guys like alex bowman and chase elliot are saying okay wait a second we weren't ready for that we talked about it right when the show came on how sleek this race track is it looks like a mile and a half from in the driver's seat too it doesn't have the grip chase elliot immediately on the outside three wide and when he drives in the corner there's no grip and look at alex bowman behind him both of them up the racetrack that's just that's how they raced last week at texas you can't race like that yet at this racetrack it's just not enough grip now that groove may move up and it may allow them to get there but right now if you overdrive these cars you're going to get out of the groove let's go listen to what chase elliott had to say oh she's slick i'm terrible and looked at yeah i'll cover that good effort though like where your head was out there ah hell why not that's what we're here for lap one why not i'm not i like that attitude though let's do it i mean that's crazy to think man i'm just going to the third groom 300 to go we'll just go and get some now that's good and his teammate was like this is a great idea i'm going with you so an interesting starts to the nashville super speedway race the allied 400 will be back with more right after this so so you download the official app of nascar follow the action with free live scoring there's in-car cameras and radio broadcasts just search nascar in your app store to download and start a free trial today beautiful day here just outside of nashville at nashville super speedway our aerial coverage brought to you by geico take another look at what happened with quinn half here on this start of the race he's in the back oh man i mean junior looks to me like i you know it appears the right front tire is still on at that point looks like it has air in it i didn't see any sparks like the carver's dragon obviously some sort of failure on the race car yeah heart failure or the tire came off the hub yeah it's unfortunate um that happens and hopefully he's feeling okay and the amr safety team was there right away so interesting selection we just saw the lead get taken from the bottom but kyle busch picked the top kyle larson went with him into the top lane [Applause] [Music] bush erik almarola coming down for the restart here at nashville and right away we're already seeing cars jump to the outside looks like ross chastain was out there taking a peek kyle larson sliding trying to make a three line for the lead down through the middle the back straight away kyle larson off into the lead just like that how impressive is that run down the back stretch my goodness such a great job of getting through the center one and two carried the speed off the two now the battles for second amarillo still to the inside kyle busch was trying to clear him so right here kyle busch drove in the corner and the car just did not rotate you got to check your speed into turn one just cannot drive in there too deep logano trying to take fourth away now kyle's running the high side or the middle of the racetrack rolls right almost to the bottom for the exit really great corner exit driving away from eric almarola custer just in front of matt de benedetto here's alex bowman in the 48 eric way up the track losing second to kyle busch it's all right there again another another opportunity where chase elliot drove in the corner just got into one too hot couldn't couldn't hold his lane watch these guys running low hi they're all trying to figure out where their cars want to be i don't think they're going to be comfortable anywhere and they're going to find that out but yesterday in the extended race it seemed like new tires the bottom of the racetrack is where you wanted to be larson's still running the middle the rest of the pack trying to use the bottom of the racetrack majority of the guys trying to get to the bottom of the racetrack eric almerol is trying to run down there but can't keep the tin car from sliding up the track and giving up positions that fights for third right there maddie yeah it's a great run for him legano has to come down contact made between the 10 and 22. let's see if that affects the handle on that 22 car these cars are so sensitive to the arrow yeah so far out of shape and left tire tracks on the front stretch but the 22 of legato made the correction here's another look at it corner exit so look at the quarter panel on the tent car it pulls that corner panel out just like we saw on ryan blaney's car right there bows the quarter panel out on the very bottom tip here comes martin shrek's junior trying to work his way up through the field again having to start back in the back of the pack with william byron who was back there as well yeah all four of these guys right here eric jones byron blaney truex all had to go to the back trying to work their way through not really having a good go of it just yet difficult back here in this dirty oh shove there and blaney gets a little sideways man it looks slick yeah a fight for the bottom of the racetrack laney just one at the bottom william buyer one or two did not cut him any slack whatsoever and i'm going to tell you right now i'm not overstating this it does not take much to get blaney fired up driving into turn three he'll remember that never touched him never touched him and that's that's something we haven't seen a lot with these cars and that shows you how slick this racetrack is william byron just rode to the rear bumper of blaney took the air off the back of the car got him loose plain he had no choice but to chase it up the racetrack well jeff you talked that this track looks like a mile and a half but it definitely isn't and doesn't race like it it's also a different setup package from nascar remember there's two basic ones there's a low horsepower one where they run wide open a lot but parker this is that high horsepower package a lot of power not a lot of downforce equates to not a lot of grip all right and the drivers have to drive it with the pedals working those cars through the corners if you look at chilligano at the top of your screen there remember that hit he had there with eric roy he came on the radio and asked the team to check the right front fender they gave it to aok just said it might be pushing a little bit towards the goodyear on the tire but should be good now getting away with one right there you don't want to have a rub on that right front fighting for position early in this race now blaney trying to make up some ground after getting loose fellaini is still back in the 28th position martin trex junior 27th william byron 26. after watching the majority of this field practicing the top groove even qualify in the middle and high groove the majority of the field obviously besides our leader is running right on the bottom larson still out front driving away using the middle groove when health has been evaluated and released from the infield care center that's good news a big hit start this race don't you think that's the thing that happened in the race yesterday don't you think they'll move up yes let's get a few updates we'll start with kelly eric campbell and this ten team have had a difficult start to this season to save the least mike buckarovic the crew chief told me it's just been downright rough but they are starting to build some momentum it started at the all-star race last week when they were able to transfer into the all-star race by winning the open and then finished with a top ten and then come to nashville and land on the pole position and qualifying now bucca ravage said hey i'm not going to get too greedy we're just looking for a nice clean day a top five even a top 10 would get us headed in the right direction right kelly behind him is mata vendetta with a great start in that 21 car he was really worried before the race that they had over adjusted after practice when they were really tight he had heard a lot of the truck series drivers and expensive drivers talking about their cars being really loose when they got the race that has not been the case for maddie diaz he's driven it up a couple of positions and great considering he's working with his new crew chief jonathan hassler who started at the all-star race these two obviously have early chemistry marty park for the weekend for alex bowman started off very nicely with a contract extension through 2023 when someone in the press conference asked him do you wish the extension was more than two years he said well it's double the amount of a contract i've ever had in my career so no i'll actually take it and they actually struggled in practice respect about how good the hendrick cars are the 48 not as good so they're putting some of kyle larson set up it's been terrific so far for bowman sitting in seventh the concern right now steve we've talked about brakes a lot this weekend they have some debris covering the right front opening that would cool those front brakes that's a concern they said however you can we got to get that debris off yeah we heard getting hamlet a countdown to green talk about there's enough breaking here it's almost like a short track right you really have to get on the brakes to slow the car down as we see ricky stenhouse jr at the bottom of the screen and ninth kevin harvick climbs the banking intense looking to take that position over in that good looking grave digger paint scheme harvick has moved up way up the racetrack got a big run on the exit of the turn four to get that run on ricky sinhaus jr see how high harvick is right there just trying to push that lane further out look at what it does to him on the straightaway just tons of front straight speed by running that top line yeah we're starting to see guys get up the race track kyle bush is in the edge of that dark rubbered up area just like the four car making great time in second place this is good to finally see this track open up because the truck car trucks run different here than the xfinity and the cenia run different in the cup and they're all going to use different parts of the racetrack more than others and it's good to see this track widen out gravedigger that was the gift from keelan for father's day this sunday and a little bump into banging already only 20 laps in here in [Music] nashville so 25 laps in nascar cup series ally 400 for nashville super speedway [Music] your fast family is back that's fast and furious f9 that'll be in theaters on friday tyler reddick in that eight is fast and furious right here to get this race underway he's up nine spots rick and he was a driver that we kind of talked about junior said hey if the group gets wide this guy can run the top but he's really done a lot of his work down here on the bottom a little different look real patient left sides actually out of that dark area you see how tough it is to get alongside that 14. yeah talk to tyler's dad this weekend he said that tyler's made big strides on be able to work on the bottom of the racetrack and find speed make speed there so he's had some great runs over the last several weeks this is a track that i think that he can do well today in i haven't been my fantasy lineup hope he has a great day man i thought i was gonna have an advantage on you there i was gonna ask why junior didn't text me say hey put the eight in your lineup i don't have them in my lineup junior we're back we're battling for the winner but yeah that's why you're not gonna text me right but tyler reddick so confident in the race car in practice and race trim but after qualifying he was mad at himself i walked up in the hallway he said driver just completely messed that up no one to blame but me we have a better car than that this car should definitely finish in the top ten if not the top five and redick showing it early on and he's been everywhere you've seen some moves on the bottom he's also done it up high in the middle as well tyler reddick making his way around a lot of cars so far and you love the nashville flare he's got joe nichols on the hood there the three-time grammy award nominee cma award winner with his hit home run and nashville has embraced not only the race track but the race teams as well tootsies sponsoring the 99 the track house racing 99 entry somebody else that's got really good pace right now ricky stenhouse jr he passed kevin harvey saw harvick pass him he passed harvick back he passed chase elliot he's gotten by alex bowman now he's chasing down matthew benedetto right now ricky sinha jr is making incredible time parker all right jeff as you look at the top of your screen racing against ty redick there is chase briscoe in that 14 running in 12th place but it does not sound great but it's good for the stuart house race team and highly publicized how they've struggled the first portion of this season he told me this last week in the comp dish meeting it was two and a half hours those are normally around an hour and most teams when things are going well so this team really buckling down trying to find those improvements and right now he's actually the worst of the sewer hops racing cars in 12 all three and others in the top pad and they seem to have found some improvements back up front kyle busch hanging on to larson that lead goes from about one second two tenths to under one second kyle bush is moving around using the very top of the track running the very bottom of the track trying to reel in this five car yeah kyle busch was making good ground on kyle larson he actually lost a little bit with a lap car but this last lap right here looks good you mentioned it searching all around the racetrack and you know whatever you learn right here lab 32 you're going to have to keep learning this track is going to continue to change all afternoon taking a look at today's infinity fastest lap kyle bush even though he's running second right now has turned the fastest lap larson out front that cleaner air second fastest albarolla who was up front to start the race even though he didn't get very far marty kyle arson up front trying to win a sixth straight stage it's not a record because he's already set the record rick he won five last four two weeks ago and so five was the record so now he's just gonna add to that but having a terrific run you know cliff daniels told us a terrific story earlier this week he said they were standing in victory lane after the all-star race and he knew kyle larson was going to go dirt racing so he had to get to the airport early in the morning he said what are you gonna do you're gonna go to bed what are you gonna do he goes nope i'm gonna go grab a burger i'm gonna sit in my hotel room and i'm gonna watch this entire all-star race again to see what i could do better he said dude we're standing in victory lane but that shows you the dedication kyle larson has to doing everything perfect if he can make it happen he knows the cars are good he can get him to victory lane if he does the studying see at the bottom of the screen and right now the roof of alex bolman's cars he loses the spot for the four card kevin harvick just in front of harvick is chase elliot in eighth place now bowman loses a spot to ross chastain who's driving through the field in that 42 car the hindered guys i mean we do have one car out front but the rest of them struggling a little bit early in this race one thing a little different this weekend with practice and qualifying no competition yellow normally these teams get a little 20 30 lap run they get a yellow as you see stenhouse close into the bumper of custer this will be the fifth position that's where custer currently is running but no comp yellow rick so this first 90 lap stage you know we saw that first caution a half a lap in that no one any good to make a you know any sort of adjustments longest green flag run yesterday in the xfinity series was 46 laps so the way things are going here uh this could be a really long green flag run you had mentioned earlier that pit window between 65 70 laps yeah but they can run about 70 laps on school but there is a little bit of speed fall off with the tire it's not dramatic like we see in other places but i still don't think they will run all 70 laps you're going to get about halfway in this stage and i imagine you're going to start to see guys come to pitt road for fresh tires ricky stenhouse jr has been battling since the very drop of the green flag listen to his radio brake fans off here for just a couple laps and see if it helps that vibration maybe they're too cool here a little bit longer of a pedal yeah i wonder if it's just kicking the pads back you don't have to say it make it leave the fans on so a little bit of a vibration i don't know if that would concern you steve but this race team started the season so quickly with so much promise and then they kind of settled out with some poor finishes so stenhouse told me this week we've kind of reset this weekend gone back to some basics listen we don't need wins we would love to have wins of course but what we need are top fives top tens kind of reset ourselves 10 races until the playoffs we want to be a part of that mix but that vibration steve does that worry you just 36 laps into the race well we saw break issues yesterday in the xfinity series race and what happens is you know as we see william byron and 2x continue to battle you can get them too hot and the pedal will get long and fade or sometimes you can literally have them too cool they'll vibrate they'll shake when you step on the pedal kelly how about your ex junior up to the 23rd position yeah these are a couple of cars that we've started at the rear we expected to make good progress moving through the field but they've kind of gotten admired william byron and martin truex jr in the 22nd and 23rd positions for that 19 team they were quote terrible yesterday they made wholesale changes on the race car overnight and as i mentioned earlier got loose in qualifying which is why he had a start so deep in the field and now troy's saying he's just too loose still on entry and exit tight through the middle and then he said it's squeezing the right rear down he's having a hard time leaning on that right here marty and kelly ryan blaney is on pit road it is not the issue with the car where they got some damage earlier on ryan said i have no brakes so steve we talked about this being an issue granny's saying i literally have no brakes they're gonna change tires here they're pulling tape off to the front trying to pull those brakes so a lot of teams open those openings up a little bit more with less tape and they're taking it all off on the 12 right now well when the 12 came down pit road jeff you pointed out the right front tire they have those neon yellow wheels it was solid black more importantly watching this tire change and pulls it up look at the brake dust that's brake pad rick we've run 40 laps that looks like a fuel run at martinsville these teams better adjust and adjust quickly if this brake issue continues i mean look at that right there i mean it looks like a short track wheel these crew members are handling these tires with gloves on and they're still too hot for them to handle that shows you the heat dissipating from those brakes and into the tires of the wheels let's take a look at this pit stop with the 19 car mark strix junior same thing look at all the brake dust coming out of the wheel this could be a serious problem for a lot of these teams these brakes are going to be a problem forward with temperatures four cars coming to pit road denny hamlin kyle larson has a problem it's kyle bush god bush is running him down yeah he's there they're coming up on lap traffic we see denny hamilton on pit road bubba wallace is down there too and for denny hamilton at 11 team he said he started this race with a full real tire chatter especially when he was running on the bottom eventually he just got loose on entry for good news tires for the 11. look at the battle for the lead very tight you guys showed it earlier when it was about 1.1 second now three tenths of a second separating the top two most impressive parts kyle's doing it on the bottom i just wouldn't think at this point on tires which kyle you're going to have to make that he's making it work on the bottom here kelly or of william byron also on pit road he said he's about a five to six level two tight but he also said he has some right front fender damage checking to see if they work on that a little bit looks like they might be pulling out four tires for the 24 marty alex bowman his teammate on pit road as well saying he's tight two-third mark of the corner they did finally get that debris off to get those brakes cooled down a little bit i can tell you after the 12 came down pit road a lot of teams worried about how that might play out later today with this brake situation obviously four goodyear tires for alex bowman kevin harvick is going to come down pit road here in a moment harvick having a nice run in the 10th position and it was a battle 8th 9th and 10th swapping back and forth but harvick saying his car also a little bit too tight the longer he runs as all these cars starting to come down pit road soon we will see the leaders hit pit road as well including kyle larson [Music] look at how busy pit road is right now [Music] and that means busy on the racetrack as well when guys are blending back out there's the top two kyle larson in the five just in front of kyle bush in the 18. parker you see joe logano here on pit road had that little bit of rub against the tender you just see that little mark on the right front but no damage there so they're going to go around to the left side it's four goodyear tires and shinoco feel just a little loose off the corner of 22. as you see the leaders coming down pit road right now kyle busch gets right to the back of cal larson he's so good at that is now going to get into his box he was complaining the car being two free at the 30 percent mark and then getting tight at the center as we have crashed around coming off pit road he's got into uh into the grass and across the racetrack and now the caution's out and kyle larson was on pit road steve so he was committed when it came and i don't think the 18 dipped it so ty larson here taking fourth question of your tires also you saw the 47 of which we should have junior chicago bush did pit so it's a race off here so this should cycle out okay but obviously the spin for reddick changing things up reddit coming off pit road on the access right there gets how wide he is pushing as hard as he can loses the back of the car now he's like oh no i'm in trouble look at all the dirt these green flag pit stops you're just trying to carry as much speed through there as you can and keep your track position yeah and it just so killed the engine and gave him he had a hard time getting going but he's gone now well we know these tires have low grip when they're cold we saw brandon joe the xfinity race literally spin out leaving that road so they repaved the apron and you know how hard this tire is to be they're very conservative with this tire and now you've got brand new asphalt and a really really hard conservative tire that is a slippery place to be at access road he was running 12th when that cycle started so that was a big mistake oh so time now for our carvana indy car update today at road america alex below earned his second victory of the season after his late race pass of full winner joseph newgarden who would suffer a mechanical issue on a restart with two laps to go it's another disappointing finish for newgarden who had dominated the race below takes over the series points lead with that victory seven-time nascar champion jimmy johnson well he continued battling through his rookie season in the series finishing a lap down following an early incident and the next time we see the ntt indycar series will be sunday july 4th on nbc from mid-ohio a couple guys speeding on pit row the 41-42 they'll have to start at the tail of the field they were on pit road when the caution was coming out but speeding on there so that penalty will hurt them as we see kurt busch now coming onto pit road parker right rick and he started back in 26 had driven his way all the way into the top 20. which was just a little tight landing and then loose off the entire run for kurt bush would be four goodyear tires and sunoco fuel for him kelly eric almarola was on pit road when the caution came out so he just rolled through now they'll serve us his car and he said the front's just not turning the back the rear end of the car feels like it's out of the track but he does have a little damage on the left rear from contact with the 22 we'll see if they address that party kelly terrific run for ricky sinhaus jr so far and let's clean up some radio we played a moment ago that was actually from his teammate ryan priest not ricky with the break vibrations in house very happy with the car and when the caution came out they decided to roll all the way down pit road brian patty said keep going we're not going to stop so they make their stop here car clearly very quick for stenhouse and again if you're on the unfit road when the caution comes out you can do your service and go back out as normal we'll be back for the [Applause] restart so so [Music] nascar on nbcsn is brought to you by toyota and by ally do it right so we talk a tremendous amount about how important pit crews are well drivers matter too kyle larson leading kyle busch was six tenths of a second behind kyle larson on the racetrack which just does a better job getting on pit road and then coming off pit road junior you can see the advantage that that little bit gained right there think about that kyle bush didn't have a hot pit entry in the xfinity race yesterday so that was kind of a situation of hey you go first i'll follow you in there so listen timing can be very complicated when the caution comes out and green flag pit's tough we need to know the 18 the five they're back to the front ryan blaney really the biggest loser we saw him hit a while ago well he was not in a position to get his lap back in any sort of wave round situation so a big name had that issue before the race started now he finds himself a lap down all the way back in 31st battle continues between the kyles kyle busch kyle larson coming up to the geico restart zone [Music] [Applause] kyle larson's going to get a shove from chase elliott in the 9-4 wide entering turn one behind him [Music] bush out front controlling the race can he keep kyle larson behind him massive cars back there just so hard kyle larson though with a little bit of momentum off turn four he's to the rear bumper of kyle busch he's gonna get him loose yeah boot him up the track not by touching him but just by taking the air off of him gonna clear him easily off turn two down the back straightaway let's see will there be reciprocation well kyle bush is a little bit far back but let's see if he can reel him back in and the answer would be yes if he can i mean that's just the tactic you use i mean you gotta it's part of racing now take the air off that guy every corner though the anger kind of cools off a little bit he don't get back to you too soon there's three wide daniel suarez in the 99 on the far inside and up into the fence blaney big hit for the 12. wow i mentioned he was a lat down he was racing with the 37 for the free pass position said he totally lost brakes guys going into the corner let's go back to that pit stop we saw the brake dust they pulled the tape off a lot of guys complaining about it that is a big mechanical failure and to think we're only 55 laps in i can't continue to state that enough right one-sixth of the race to have a break failure is really unbelievable you gotta imagine either the the brake rotor came apart or it melted the bead on the right front tire such a short run it's hard to imagine it melted to be right but something came off there part right there that looks like brake rotor they'll bounce up against the wall yeah yeah there you go so the rotor comes off and that cuts the tire down and this team from oh my gosh this team from even before the race started had a terrible day had to pit to repair damage right when he pulled up on the racetrack and then didn't have brakes and now ultimately part failure and probably in that brake system ends their day fellaini's season though a win in atlanta has him in the playoffs once again we see the amr safety team right there attending to ryan [Music] those are hard hard hits into that wall and it's so good to see these drivers just get out under their own power you could hear in his voice how much pain he was in how concerned are the 22 the 2 the 21 now after seeing that from the 12. everyone's concerned i mean if i'm if i'm a driver and i'm picking up what's going on i'm nervous even if i ain't have any brake issues right yet so you know one of your jobs as a crew chief is kind of walk garage and see what everybody has i would have hoped i walked by that 12 car and saw what size brakes they had on it so i'd have a little more confidence to tell my driver dale jr it's going to be okay big big hit for ryan blaney here at nashville super speedway his day ends too soon ryan blaney out of his car he is okay the free pass so slick you know what's slick this f-150 lightning is targeted to go zero to 60 in the mid-four seconds and it's powering this entire tailgate this maki 1400 is awesome all these ford electrics are awesome but we got to get to the race [Music] [Applause] back at nashville super speedway and there's a couple cars up here towards the front that i think people are scratching their heads going wait a second how did kurt bush get up there how is he in the top five right now well so we had larson and kyle bush and all those guys you know they made their pit stops well the one of kurt busch had yet to pit so that yellow was a big break for him same for stenhouse almarola eric jones anthony alfredo mcdowell uh justin haley in the 77 there's a whole group of cars right here that have cycled their way to the front by i'm not going to call it luck because you decide when you pit they were fortunate they hadn't pitted before the yellow came out but they decided to run a little longer jeff right and this was the benefit of running longer they were fortunate they caught up caught caution yeah i think kurt bush i think he had a good car yesterday in practice i think he can stay there i mean little breaks like that in the race can completely change your day for more on harvick we go to rut rick i know you're a monster jam fan your eyes do not deceive you that in fact is the grave paint scheme made famous by dennis anderson his son adam that drives it now is here this weekend a great father's day tribute of course for keelan and his dad kevin harvick it's been great to see the monster truck around town gravedigger this weekend it's such a legendary paint scheme such a fun group of people that have just motorsports running through their veins the whole family involved with the gravedigger but amazing to see it out there we know how big their fan base is and they've had some good speeds in 24th right now they're looking for a lot better week but especially with that grave digger paint scheme i think they got it going rick you say it pretty well and i think piper was even excited in the arms of her dad there as well checking out grave digger paint scheme for kevin harvick this week it's a good looking car coming to one to go guys we're gonna get a chance to check out which lanes everybody picks the choose i know it sounds simple what a great rule i know you pick where you want to pick we're gonna see how good you are we're often gonna see the leader take that top maybe on new tires he takes the bottom but this is where it gets tricky as a driver this would keep me up at night trying to figure out where do i need to be how many i mean pick the top i mean pick the bottom you know lose spots gain spots because it's really in your hands at this point i believe it's so interesting having spotters well i'm going to tell you you know we talk brakes this is the key we have to get up high and look at this racetrack i know it looks like most mile and a half tracks the front stretch here is longer than charlotte but yet it's only a mile and a third so where do you make up the difference these tight tight corners so these guys go down these straightaways at crazy top speeds and then they drive down in here they got these little spoilers on the back they have to stand on the brakes so while it looks like an intermediate track it races nothing like it i know this is going to sound crazy but corner radius it's like a martinsville junior it's long back stretch and then you go down this tight little corner yeah it's not a lot of banking so it doesn't really slow the car down much they don't have the big blade on the back no the low drags low so there's nothing slow in the car down on throttle steve you compared it to charlotte banking there 24 degrees banking here 14 degrees field approaching the geico restart zone once again larson kyle busch [Music] side by side and larson is going to search ahead going down the back stretch chase elliot taking a peek down low ricky stenhouse jr a good run up in the top five kurt busch going to stay in front of joey logano larson kyle busch chance elliott rookie stenhouse junior third coach joey logano eric almarola eric jones top eight matt demendetto in ninth and mike mcdowell in 10th the winner of the daytona 500 to start the season so on that first run chase ellie didn't fade it back to the backside of the top ten up here in going into second place under kyle bush kyle giving up the spot and almost maybe giving up another spot here to the 47. there's something rolling that 18 car there but will said the left rear tire doesn't have any goodyear left on it you see how dark it is the yellow's been rubbed off i don't know when that happened or how it happened but it looks like it's made contact i don't know if the tire is going a little slack or but it catches my attention the kyle bush is falling back now he's backed up to this 47 a stinthouse stenhouse right behind him is kurt busch sent out his car looks so good today he's able to just go wherever he wants to get right to that yellow line in that corner see what he does this corner trying to get by kyle busch still committed to the bottom jumped up on the board in practice and i was like you know it's a new track maybe there's a lot of guys out there not hitting it hard right out the gate but pace is really is real in this 47 car still 25 laps to go in stage one jtg doherty kyle again up the racetrack he looks loose the back of his car wrong with that car back of his car you saw him have to chase it wiggled just a little bit up the race track he went and now he's under attack from his brother i'm telling you it drives like it has a low left rear tire i agree i mean it looks like you say oh look at this drive back underneath his brother i thought he didn't appreciate that he didn't get his christmas card or something that was well these two are gonna race each other yeah they do see how kyle can clearly see that car shaking getting into the corner clearly he's not driving the way he wants it to he won't quit though he'll stay on top of the wheel running side by side here is allowing joey logano to close in on both these guys kyle bush able to go a little bit deeper on entry house car looks like it may be trying to rebound well this racetrack you know your car could be okay but just be a little bit loose or a little bit tight you over drive it just by two car you know half a car length into the corner and now you're chasing the car it's just this is a game of precision today you're gonna have to be perfect with that throttle in the brake we also don't know how dirty the racetrack gets under caution uh you know we run on concrete tracking dover and they pick up a lot of the rubber that gets laid down on the track and uh under caution maybe he did not have the tires cleaned enough all right guys we talked about the shape of the racetrack now take me on board we'll ride riding behind with joey logano wide open all those green dots at the bottom and see right here this thing's gonna light up three brake markers down into one and two i mean that's really what it's all about right brake usage in the middle of the corner 100 and then this end of the racetrack is completely different than one and two you have a little bit shorter of a straightaway so right here a pass of legano but both ends of the racetrack are different one and two as we get back on with joy goes down there's frustrated with you mission is steve this straightaway is longer than charlotte but you drive into a corner that's more like richmond a three-quarter mile racetrack got to get it slowed down look at all the break he's got to use trying to be precise keep that thing on the yellow line that's what joey's car wants right now and in order to do that you got to use a lot of brake now let's see what he does get into turn three that wanted to jeffy slow down almost 60 miles an hour i saw like what almost 180 down to somewhere in the 120s exactly right i think if they're you know if they're all feeling some sort of brake issue or a little bit of fade in the pedal some use some heat in the brakes a lot of these guys are going to change their driving style be a little more conservative get down into the corner we're seeing kyle busch still fading back toward that battle right there here's kevin harvick racing with bubba wallace 22nd 23rd place up top kyle busch passed again by his brother kurt parker well guys we watched kyle bush fall back he was very quiet on the radio hadn't said a word oh he got very loose there off turn four then he just came on the radio and related his car to a bucket and i'll let you fill out the rest so he didn't really give me constructive criticism other than he's not happy with that eight too far right now and you can see that the speed on the racetrack it's crazy how it just flipped the switch he was one of the best cars here maybe it's a set of tires not agreeing with the car if you're eric amarillo right now you're seeing that you're seeing he's loose so what do you want to do you want to get as close to him as you can enter in the corner use that air to move him out of the way i will say sometimes guys you know the 18 pitted what would have been under green as a crew chief you make adjustments to help your car fire off on green flag conditions junior you know but then instantly they caught the yellow so now he's out here starting in traffic maybe they had the air pressure set for green flag and maybe those kind of the two plans just crossed a little bit and it's not agreeing with the 18 car and it's crazy how a car drives so differently when you take off on the green versus when you take off under yellow and that's a great point see they just had no idea they were going to be under caution so a handful for kyle bush getting a little bit loose and almost getting into the wall right there call it all the way back to fifth so fourth caution of the race has come out and you see chris bush are slow on the racetrack also saw justin haley in the 77 with an issue with that car so difficulties for these cars both those cars got right front tire issues getting down into turn one both of them in the fence they're running 15th and 17th both of them oh wow two separate situations i don't think i've ever seen that before wow i wonder if the seven didn't or the 77 didn't have a road or something come apart and then the 17 run over it chased him in there with the debris it just seems odd that two go in at the same time that's a that's a big implications for that 17 car chris busher he he came in here you know on that bubble to make the playoffs he was the last driver in and see if we look at those two cars come down pit road in the right front so you were right chris pusher came on the radio and said i ran over something so it might have come from that 77 or there was some other debris there that they both hit and it it went back into the 17 but he definitely ran over something he saw and that popped the right front [Music] you know that's the same area blaney had his problem normally nascar does a great job of cleaning these racetracks up interesting timing for this yellow so close to the end of the stage it's a great opportunity for those guys in the back half of the of the lead lap to come right now and get your service and then stay out six or seven laps later at the end of the stage trying to leapfrog those guys if you're one of those guys in the top ten you're gonna be thinking man i could maybe win the state i mean if you're kyle larson you think i can win the stage get a playoff point or these other drivers up there namely say kurt busch or eric amarola they can gobble up some of those points and try to help their chances of making the playoffs yeah we saw a little bit of that yesterday in the infinity race and i think that you know track position being as important as it is that's a great it's a great way for some of these guys who's had trouble as many playoff points as larson already has you know what's more important here that to me is that's where it's going to get interesting and we'll see if the leaders do fade if anyone chooses to stay out and try to steal some stage points oh big decision there for chase elliott larson said i'm coming down to pitt road and chase elliott said well i'll stay out then morning an interesting mix there ricky stenhouse jr brian patty as crew chief encouraging him seek clean air as much as you can they had a terrific run he pits from third very happy with the car expect no changes here other than four fresh goodyear tires kyle larson said hey the last adjustments you gave me really helped me i had much more maneuverability on the racetrack i don't want any changes here four tires actually they do make a quick wedge change here for kyle larson for the short run to the stage but with some cars staying out this would be fun to watch for everyone we saw last minute decisions chase ellen made one and decided to stay on the racetrack most importantly didn't hit that orange box you're gonna see it right here a hard right misses that orange box totally legal two tires hit that box the penalty chase elliott i call that a last minute choice so ah so so stanley cup semifinal tonight game four vegas and montreal it's 8pm eastern on nbcsn also streaming on peacock canadians lead the series to one there's nothing like playoff hockey back here at nashville super speedway nascar cup series ally 400 on nbcsn and we saw earlier the 12 of ryan blaney got into the wall moments ago kelly caught up with him good to see ryan blaney at the infield care center after a hard hit and we heard you say you just lost your brakes how much warning if any did you have i didn't really have much we kind of had a little bit of softness in the brakes pretty soft uh the first run and got a call she came in and pulled tape uh you know in the nose and i thought that was gonna get better and you know just pulling them back off and it ran you know we ran i was four or five laps and i went to one i touched the brakes and i don't know if a rotor exploded or or what you'll have that and that's what it felt like and then nothing so and i was already at a bad angle so this is not not a good day um shame to kind of start the day having to come down pit road and fix something and um just a long not a long day a short day i'm sorry everyone at menards and four that really stinks in 12-12 group but uh come back at pocono for double head we had so many unknowns coming to back to this racetrack what can you tell us about the track itself and the type of racing it produced out there yeah it was you know it was tough it was real slick i don't think anyone really expected it the track changed a lot from from practice to the race um you know we were we were working on i think everyone was working on trying to get turn in their cars in practice and then fire with racing everyone's really loose i know we were um and i was pretty tight in practice so i was i was shocked it kind of changed that much but um you know i see a couple people i don't know if they have flat right fronts or or brakes failing hopefully uh that doesn't happen to many other guys but um yeah just a definitely tough place but you know nice to be back here it's just a shame uh our day ended early thank you ryan we've seen speeds of 180 almost that was a big hit by ryan blaney getting into turn one there said he had no breaks once he felt it he felt like rotor busted away on it difficult day for ryan blaney parker hey guys as we hear a lot about these brakes and i'm hearing a lot of teams and drivers coming on the radio complaining about their brakes fading we saw the dust that came out of ryan blaney's tires when he went into the pits i want to show you a front running car this is kyle busch's right front after he came off you can see there's dust on the right front here but it's not nearly the amount that we saw coming off that 12 car that's a front-running car that wasn't handling that well but he's not using the brakes as much whereas those cars in the back in traffic you're having to use the brakes a ton at this racetrack and this is one of the few racetracks in my career that i have experienced where in practice you use very little brake you let the car roll but when you get in the race and especially in traffic you use so much more and i think that has caught so many teams off guard right now that are not running a big enough brake package or the driver is using too much brake well parker to your point we have a good look every time a car comes down pit roads right here the 11 and denny hamilton tire comes off brake dust comes out look at this car the 24 brake dust comes out not so much on the 24 compare that to this 12. i mean a huge plume of black brake dust inside of the wheel we know the 12 was running he said soft which tells me the brakes got very hot this is something we're gonna have to keep an eye on for sure this restart burton we're gonna have to keep an eye on this because we have some guys on old tires and then we have a few guys that came down pit road we'll see if new tires are an advantage so i saw tyler reddick spin off pit road earlier he got the lucky lucky dog there the free pass 48 car with a penalty on pit road to start in the back five laps to go to the end of stage one and it's chase elliott and kurt bush up front great restart for curt bush doesn't quite clear the nine just yet chase is trying to take the side force away from that one car keep him down there and a little bit of a side draft as well to stay on that outside it's going to be able to allow them to get the lead down in three and four look at these guys the distance they have created between them daniel suarez eric jones back there a couple names that have worked their way to the front through these different strategies krakowski as well right there behind kyle larson larson knifing his way around through these guys going anywhere he wants fresher tires came to pit road he's trying to get by eric jones in the 43. marty rick so larson restarted eighth and now he's up the fourth trying to get to the another stage win two thief if you're gonna stay out in your cliff daniels on this next stop at the end of the stage do you want your driver pushing hard for the stage win like this or taking it easy on the tires oh run run hard i don't think you can slow down enough to save tire life you could if you're at the back of the pack but up here where kyle larson's running i wouldn't worry about it plus you might get a little idea of just how it goes on a short run look at this back here though kyle busch looking for some real estate he's gonna go three wide into turn three but coming to two to go to end this stage all these guys are trying to claim some points and we can stay in this top 10 here here's the battle right here larson easily going by suarez for third but on the bottom of the screen austin dillon joe logano ricky stenhouse jr all these guys trying to get some valuable points here to end it still hasn't got a win yet as we see legato way up the racetrack yeah eric jones had a problem legano kept trying to get on the outside of him jones back to 10th now legato ninth here's the benedetto battling jones going by easily for tenth spot larson's up to third cheeks elliot only one stage win already this year he had five at this point last year you know what chase is getting right here almost as important as that playoff point is the valuable information of how his car drives out in front in some clean air dale so hard to tell what your car is doing back here in the mess out front there though has a good idea of the balance they made some good changes on that nine car to get it back up front get it competitive still these guys battling for every position trying to get a point here and a point there penske driver side by side off turn four is chase elliot's gonna win the stage the fight for position with the penske drivers photo finish there at the end of stage one the big winner in that entire thing in my opinion was kurt bush he came into this race 63 points behind chris busher whom just wrecked out of the race so just got nine points by finishing second in that stage chase elliott was able to get to victory lane at cota three races ago now he wins this stage and another playoff [Music] point so always love wednesday mornings at 9 a.m eastern it's nbc sports on siriusxm this week dale jarrett hall of famer will be on nascar radio channel 90. nbc sports on siriusxm talking about nashville being back on the circuit as well as the next stop pocono the doubleheader coming up next weekend and cars on their way down pit road parker and what a great run for the hometown team track house and daniel swears in that 99 just a little loose but when he got up front he said the car got a lot better with that cleaner airs before goodyear tires it's no good feel for him below in the middle of the screen is kurt busch who also got second place in that stage which is an excellent run for this team aided by that caution four tires and tighten it up kelly some pretty big changes for this number 19 a chassis adjustment they also pulled the spring rubber but it was the strategy call to get the team their second stage win of the season and chase said i like that call [Music] it was that hard right turn steve now we see this a lot throughout the races where the teams make choices to win stages versus maybe even winning the race what do you think that what kind of position does it put these guys in well they're definitely going to lose a little track position here but it sounds like alan gustafsson had a big chassis change plan he was probably going to lose track position anyway with a long pit stop so got a little bonus knowing he was going to have a long pit stop nascar on nbcsn is brought to you by credit one bank official credit card of nascar visit gocreditone.com and by ford built ford proud [Music] what a great sight it is to see all the fans back here you've got to be loving this oh i am rick it's so cool to see all these fans in the stands and you know what we've got a real special fan alvin kamara is here not only is he an amazing athlete from the a that's right played at the university of tennessee i know we got a lot of volunteers here but of course offensive rookie of the year plays for the saints this guy's so much fun and also a nascar fan himself plus he's sponsored some races with his company the big squeezy he is here alvin thanks for being here man so excited to have you out i know you've got a new role with nascar tell everybody what that is so finally finally excited to be you know taking my relationship with nascar to the next level uh officially employed growth and engagement advisor so i mean definitely hype and excited blessed to be um associated that much more i mean it's huge because you know for you you've been to a handful of races but the experience getting back out to the track that's what it's all about so how are you going to do that with your friends yeah man so just within that role um we're just trying to strategically create and develop new opportunities for fan engagement so i got a lot of ideas i think nascar has a lot of ideas and it'll be fun to get it going it's cool favorite part about being at the track for you man being down on the track when the engine starts there's nothing like it i mean it's so loud and every time they ask me if i want ear plugs i say no awesome thanks for being here man big fan right here alvin kamara you guys that's great and i mean there are stars everywhere luke combs bernard pollard cole swindell chase rice big and rich brad paisley of course pit bull vince neal i mean we've got stars everywhere that's i junior i would say he could play the guitar for most of those bands right oh i'm sorry drums drums let's take a look at the roof on this 23 car he's got some damage you know the rotor's been coming apart on the right front a lot of these cars possibly impacted this car bubba wallace really really lucky that it's nothing worse than that but apparently it's uh scourged that roof pretty good i don't know uh steve you know more than i do you've been to the wind tunnel what's that going to do to that car well not good it's not going to hurt the air separate off the roof slings the air up in the air over that real spoiler so not and improves coming back to the geico restart zone larson and kyle busch once again making up row one legano with a good restart trying to get to the outside of the 18. he has to check up here comes ricky stenhouse jr in the 47. see hamlin had levin carr trying to push the 22 down the back straightaway to clear sent out now we're going to try to go pretty wide maybe no we're not going to do that first later the first time we've really seen danny hamlin's car toward the front of the pack i'm sure that's going to help that car drive a lot better we'll see if he can make some moves up here in the top five 18 in kyle bush also was struggling before this pit cycle wonder if they made the adjustments needed he lost his car right there in the middle of one to two up the racetrack he win he's fading back to the 47 car stinhouse one player missing at the front of the field martin trex junior the 19 a pit road entry violation has cycled to the back of the pack currently in the 27th spot see maddie trying to enjoy the gano right behind him chastain another car that was really really fast in practice quickly as legano was fighting up front he's dropped all the way back to fifth [Music] [Applause] and look at this martin trex jr back here right behind austin dillon i'm guessing that the nerves a little bit of anxiety here having to go to the back probably not happy well he got he got penalized for a pretty trivial trivial issue on pit entry that i'm sure has him extremely aggravated that worked for your work against you inside that race car yeah they made the same penalty yesterday to penalize the driving infinity series for the same thing they want you to enter pit road in the outside lane and he did not do that this is one of those fouls you know it's like a touch foul but it is a it is a rule right nascar said that they have not only has this rule been in place but they're letting the drivers know they want them to enter in the outermost lane we saw a car yesterday get penalized for it now martin trex jr again today so jeff you were just talking about here it is here's 2x entering outermost lane in my opinion is outside of that white dotted line he is definitely to the left of that entering pit road that's where nascar sees the issue now what does it make a difference not a lot when you're on there by yourself i guess traffic is what nascar is concerned about but they're officiating it the same either way let's listen to the two x's thoughts we gotta start tail in by myself they said you ramped middle the whole way down obviously oh boy so you hear his frustration you heard him say he's by himself and i can see his point he's like you know i understand i gotta be in the outside lane but i'm here by him by myself nascar has taken the opinion that we're not gonna decide why you're not in the outside lane we're gonna enforce it that way they decide when they make a ruling like that they make it a point of emphasis you just have to adapt and when you see that call made kyle busch still struggling with his car as denny hammond's going by him now trying to go by stenhouse into second place now denny hamlin moves up to third by this 18 car accomplished struggling trying to find rear grip in this car way up high oh man stenhouse is trying to scare the play off field i mean if he could go win this race jr it would be a major shake up kelly denny hamlin and that number 11 making some progress we heard him say pre-race that they have some catching up to do to those hendrick cars but he said it's not going to happen overnight we need to kind of chip away at it his crew chief chris gabhart tell me told me they feel like some of it has been lack of performance that has kept them out of victory lane some of it has been lack of execution right now then he says he needs the brakes to put the tires into the ground but it's just not doing that he said when he lifts off the brakes the front tires start to chatter that's what the 11 is dealing with now parker right kelly and that second yellow car behind jenny hamlin there that's joe logano and most of this race in the top five after starting third but you wouldn't know it listening to his radio beginning the race he struggled that car getting very tight on the entry not allowing the car to turn then they flipped it to loose now he's back to being tight but he's still chasing down that 18 of cowboys he and paul wolf just looking for the balance of that 22 card marty parker what a performance from ricky sinhaus jr and jtg darty racing up in the second spot there's 195 to go but this is maybe their best performance of the season and showing strength especially in the long run he made some fantastic moves early in this run but they really feel like the strength of this 47 car is the longer they run could they track down kyle larson and maybe get the team's second ever win and steve you mentioned it boy would that upset the playoff picture that would only leave four spots for teams to get on on point since in-house wins today well marty you talked about how they were trying to reset their thoughts on the 47 it's obviously working and this is why it would be such a big deal playoff standings on the left everyone in yellow winners everybody above the red line currently in look where stenhouse is below the red line so he did win this race he jumps up to yellow everybody slides down more seats the table the more they get filled with winners makes that race at daytona they have the regular season more pressure package steve 11 different winners already in 2021 let's listen into the 18 [Applause] copy that now radio you're seeing there just can't carry any speed into three pretty concise feedback i know what you've been doing nobody's battling we've got to be a little freer on entry and perhaps a little more rare grip on exit but it's so frustrating right your car was so good at the start of this race and they just haven't been able to keep up with the racetrack but talking about keeping up the racetrack i mean drivers keep changing their lanes it's amazing to me how the bottom of the racetrack the last few laps is where everybody went to and then all of a sudden everybody started running the top it's it's just crazy how quickly this racetrack's changing and i think that makes it difficult to know what you want your car to do like it's gonna drive different on the bottom versus on the top where do you put your point of emphasis where do you say i gotta make my car better i think that makes it challenging for the driver and the crew chief on top of it we're looking at the toyota driver update here for kyle busch uh as high as first as low as 21st currently running fourth again he's restarted on the front row but has fallen back a little bit under fire from ricky stenhouse jr his teammate denny hamlin legano now is in front of him so kyle bush back to fifth at this point so yeah we heard blaney talk about how much different the track was than practices i hate to even bring this up but drivers is it fair to say that i'm not sure practice changed anything for the races that does that mean would you buy into that jeff well they've all been screaming for practice and then the track completely changed so yeah i mean that's that's hey that's learning this racetrack too every track changes from practice to qualifying you see ross chastain nice recovery after that speeding penalty but every racetrack changes it's just there's no experience here to know what is going to change the next time they come back they'll have a much better idea [Music] we kind of saw this yesterday in the xfinity race cars all ran high for early part of the race and then they moved and gravitated lower as they started to get their cars to turn better started making adjustments but late in the run as the tires get worn they're going to start moving back up the racetrack larson's already in the middle of the track denny hamlin's in the middle of the track legano running the middle kyle busch is trying to find any kind of grip wherever he can go at the top of the racetrack here behind him there's cars looking up the racetrack for grip so track will tighten up toward the end of the race again and i think the cars will fade back toward the top car larson out front 2.8 second lead a legendary run and legends on broadway we may have visited there on thursday night the nascar cup series ally 400 from nashville super speedway [Music] nascar drive that's your live race day companion you can go on board with high definition in-car cameras or select alternate camera angles to see more action visit nascar.com drive or you can download the nascar mobile app today so many great shots onboard cameras riding along here with daniel suarez tootsie's on board the world famous bar downtown on broadway and really so impressive for track house racing we want to thank them for giving us this shot daniel suarez but so impressive the idea that justin marks right now and pitbull have of bringing their team a nascar team right onto broadway they want to have this shop right on broadway where fans could walk through check it out have a bar a restaurant there as a part of it well it's a great idea i think it'd be awesome for fan interaction you'd have to check out where all your guys go to lunch because that place is distracting i'm not sure you'll get it back into the shop but it's uh i mean it that's what it's about you know nascar the fans the shops get tons of tour of the junior motorsports dale you know you have fans there all the time checking out the race shop i mean if you're going to be in nashville i love the idea of owning it and putting it right there on broadway for the fans to come see right now suarez running 16th marty how's kyle larson doing up front with that 2.8 second lead all right larson having a nice run i would say rick with that big lead that you mentioned a moment ago talked to cliff daniels yesterday about this car it is actually a brand new race car and he told me this might be my last race new race car of the season i asked him why that was said well i wanted a new car for the playoffs but i am not a big fan of showing up in the playoffs with a brand new car so i wanted one race on it and it just happened we chose it here so this car may show up at darlington this could be our car that if we're lucky enough to be in the championship four that we might run at phoenix but steve it presents an interesting dilemma for these race teams you know next year is the next car coming for nascar the nugent next-gen car how much investment do teams put into building cars for a playoff in a championship run in 2021 versus knowing you know what after the end of phoenix race we're never going to use that car again we've got to build all the new cars for our new stock next year yeah all of these team managers and people that you know play that chess game it is a battle you know if you're kyle larson and continuing to build new cars and winning all these races you know that's the guy you're chasing so at what point you put next year's development on hold work on this year i mean look at the last four races the stat there that is outstanding it blows my mind is 89 percent of the laps led i mean that just is unbelievable that they could be that dominant what a journey larson has been on you know kyle larson was suspended last year for using a racial slur during an online event last spring he lost his ride at chip ganassi racing lost his sponsors and then after training and rehabilitation that program he was given a second chance by nascar and was hired by rick hendrick for this season and what a higher that was for rick well i mean his performance this year is is unbelievable he won a million dollars at the all-star race goes to ohio jumps on a sprint car wins that race runs again on wednesday comes back here he's leading here everything he gets in is fast uh jeff you mentioned it right like hendrick as a whole has had a lot of speed but now we're starting to see a race where larson is the only hendrick car what inside the top 10. so you know this five has something special even compared to his teammates yeah kyle larson is you know motivated and what's amazing too is he leads this series and goes runs dirt cars and wins in those two he's winning and everything he's sitting in right now and watching his 21 car maddie d he's got a problem let's see what he's talking about yeah anything i can try here is uh motor running tell me what you got yeah just uh sounds like it's down a cylinder and when he comes by our booth we can hear it it doesn't sound clean and we talked about this being an opportunity for him chris busher had problems racing for a playoff playoff spot buscher had problems wasn't earned many points today now this 21 car with this problem may not be able to take advantage of that tyler reddick going by on the outside that's 18. it's a long run to steve as far as tires go right now 29 laps the longest reflect run we've seen today 41 laps yeah and as we close into the kind of the halfway point of this stage that's when i expect to see most of the guys come to pit road trying to break it up somewhere in the middle but you know it's that last stage is the longest so you got to use this information right here this time on a long run to see which way your car goes where you move around the racetrack to find a different balance we're going to continue to gather information sorry driver who's trying to turn that season around eric almarola getting the poll earlier today still running in the top ten here worked his way up to eighth position past christopher bell a few laps ago trying to catch his teammate we're used to seeing eric in that role of battling for one of those playoff positions and he has had just an awful season this year but today an opportunity he said it before the race this is their chance to turn things around and so far so good racing once again in nashville and one of the most famous venues for country music of all time grand ole opry so so the michael jordan denny hamlin owned 23-11 race team driven by bubba wallace spins he was running up in the 14th position when it looks as though that left rear tire is flat he got sideways bringing the caution out now for the sixth time and steve we were about to see guys come to pit road we were probably five laps away yeah very close to the green flag pit stop so uh you know this will definitely bring everyone to pit road it's kind of been the story of bubba's season man running top 20 even better at times and something like this happens not sure if he had the flat tire that caused a spin or not but they've had some problems you know in races and not been able to finish really i think where the speed the potential is for this team just yet that's very scary going back up the track isn't it jeff parker and the team there on the 23 is saying that he ran over some bits that were on the straight away some debris possibly rotor bits as we've had so many cars have had brake issues that serve stuff spreads all around the racetrack it's tough to pick up but sometimes they think that's when they ran over and cut down that left rear we actually got some information we saw the 77 and the 17 wreck at the same time we thought that was a rotor issue but both of their cars their brakes were intact so both of those cars same corner ran over a piece of debris so this looks like the third one maybe for cut tire and pit stops happening now legano first to his stall parker got up hits out top five after running there most of the day still fighting some issues especially on the x to the corner for the 22 but they're getting closer between him and paul wolf on the adjusters this point too still strong in the top five fourth good new tires jenny hamilton pits from 30 said he needs more security getting into the turns and more turns from the center office air pressure for the 11. kelly we talked about the heat here in nashville today ricky sennhouse jr asked for a little pedialyte in his water this time he said the car tight to start off but it frees up as they run want some help with the right rear kyle larson with a blistering stop they asked him anything we can do to help handling he said not really i feel like we're pretty good right here i would say so rick yeah he wins the race off of pit road denny hamlin grabs a spot we saw kyle bush grabbing a couple spots and unfortunate here a wheel coming loose and off into the grass so [Music] nascar on nbcsn is brought to you by monster energy unleash the beast credit one bank the official credit card of nascar visit go creditone.com and buy ram trucks the only truck brand to win motor trend truck of the year three years in a row back at nashville super speedway and some issues on pit road we saw the tire come out that was christopher bell so he receives that pit road penalty and the hits keep coming for martin trex jr he was speeding on entry to pit road i'm guessing the radio on the 19 team probably not so good right now yeah it's just well he fixed that one problem it was too low he was going a little too in the right lane but going a little too fast it's funny up here it's not funny down there all right let's listen in section two and then uh we also are speeding again in section five a lot closer i guess i'm running green then coming off yeah we do to your point we joke about it but i've been there and and it's just so frustrating when things like that happen you can hear it in his voice not doesn't really have the car to drive back to the field unfortunately it's still in the middle of stage two we haven't even got the halfway point in the race so a lot of opportunity but this one of them races that survival just comes to mind jeff i know you you know it's not a popular word but a lot of guys are having issues so just gotta stick around well some of the frustrating from frustration from martin trex jr is how they're running yeah i mean we have not talked about them today we're accustomed to seeing them up front this year but over the last month they haven't shown it and again today just not the speed we expect to see from those guys and it stings when two of your teammates are second and third you know it's not like the whole organization's back there with you so yeah it's so frustrating when you expect to run in the front and you can't it just it just eats at you kyle and kyle battle once again they make up row one kyle larson kyle hamlin denny hamlin kyle bush is back in row two stenhouse junior in the fourth position in row two he also is running very well so larson and hamlin coming to the restarts look at denny hamlin getting up there will that upset that five car or help him give him a push down the back straightaway so now junior trying to take advantage of that remember hamlet picked that outside lane beside behind the five rather than going beneath him 18 has to get out of the gas there kyle bush losing a little grip three wide back here william byron working his way back up into the top ten after several issues today a little damage on that right front fender and he's worked that out and now you're still underneath hamline has to focus on that yellow line get the car hooked to it go back to the throttle as soon as he can really break even with hamlet and beat him on corner exit just like that here comes agano i i didn't i'm so impressed by stenhouse and this team to have the pace they have here today overachieving big time up in the third said that just the most laps they've run in the top five since the 2020 daytona 500 more than 70 today in the top five sent house can it be the racing surface oh as he gets right up to the back of the 18 gonna get him loose and stenhouse junior trying to take second away from kyle busch he'll do it that right there is a car that turns his car turns the corner so well right on the yellow line he got in the corner pretty shallow so the 18 could couldn't get back to his left rear look at that he was chasing off the corner kyle is so frustrated look at him he sees that hole underneath the 18 he knows if he can just get to that quarter panel shove that air next to the car it's going to shove that 18 up the racetrack see now junior's cars doing what he needs it to do he's taking advantage of it gideon logano still battling hard right here i met marvik in sixth place not had the year he wanted to have to me i told you guys this morning this is a harvard kind of racetrack gotta be precise hit your marks every single corner if they don't run well here they're gonna have big problems this is this kind of racetrack marty and jeff that's exactly the point kevin harvick told me on the grid before the race he said we have to take advantage of these 750 races as legano gets in the wall a little bit there harvick with a nice run on him he said we have to take advantage of these races at the 550 races we are behind but here we can win the race harvick showing some strength and some aggressiveness as he races logano in the 22s these guys aren't playing right now still a long way to go in this race well they're taking advantage of taking the air off the car in front of them when they get into these turns and now legano pinching down on the four trying to keep harvick down low and what does byron do does he go with the 22 to push him [Music] these two running side by side william byron back up in the mix here comes the 10. alvaro is going to take advantage of that little bobble big slide in the back of that 24 car eric almarola just having a great day drives up in the seventh spot haas racing it's kind of been down this year look at where they are in the points harvick's the only one up there in the top 15. well almarola surprisingly only one top 10 finish in 2021 a year ago remember he had a stretch of nine straight top ten finishes it's funny how you know teams just ebb and flow of the sport watch right now hendrick is up they were down last year it was a different team the year before a different team sometimes multiple teams teams in each year crazy how they can kind of fade and come and go kelly and that's the exact point that mike bogarevich crew chief on the 10 said to me said look 2018 we felt like any one of our four stuart house racing cars could win each and every week that is just how this uh series ebbs and flows they're on the wrong end of it right now but they do feel like they're headed in the right direction i said how do you keep morale up on the team they said luckily in this series as he gets around the 22 luckily you race each and every week so you just kind of put it behind you and move on to the next one he said i've told my guys i don't care if they get ticked off about our performance as long as they're still in there working their butts off in the race shop and that's exactly what they've been doing they picked up momentum at the all-star race in texas last week and it looks like they're going to continue to build on that here in nashville guys i want y'all to look at this race where everybody's running nine laps after a restart and most everybody is just painting the other line on the fire very very bottom of this racetrack all the leaders every base everybody in the top 20 is on the bottom of the racetrack 45 last year now we'll come back and look again it's going to look different and that's part of a new race track the drivers are learning that now where do you want to go how does this change three plays of some great battles down the front straight away harvick trying to go wherever logano's not legano really not giving him an understanding of where to be then the 24 getting loose right here checking the back of that car trying to catch it trying to catch it eric alvarez loves it yeah i'll take the spot and again entering the corners at about 180 still 124 as they're going through the middle as we go nascar nonstop so so [Applause] so and aero coverage brought to you by geico such a beautiful downtown area here at nashville and a good battle here between teammates here comes eric almarola looking at the inside of kevin harvick really surprising to me i mean he did go out and get the pole it was an early draw for eric in qualifying but the speed is real in the 10 car and they are making some great adjustments for him on the pit box to keep this thing working and actually making it better a great battle right here denny hamlin kyle bush's teammate they've been going at it emily trying to take that third spot away while they're running side by side eric's admiral is trying to drive up to these guys [Music] kyle's going to get behind his teammate instead of could have got to the side of him and continue to battle side by side side draft but he gets behind pushes him down the front straightaway in two different lines you know jeff you just mentioned how everybody was running that bottom line but that time we saw kyle bush run a little bit higher listen to the throttle listen when he gets out of the throttle right there be nice if we can get this call under control what do i have i was going to tell you when he got back in the throttle but he was yelling over me so i couldn't do it but clearly what'd he say not happy he just is not happy with the car at all what do we have yeah i heard that part you know my favorite part of my job is for you drivers to listen to all these radios of the other drivers i think all those year i think you all thought i was crazy this is but we listened to them all we would other than kyle larson and maybe stenhouse oh you're going to get a lot of that bobbled by denny kyle's got to run kyle's got up top here and found a little something make this highline work you know that guy is complaining but he's sitting there running in the top five that tells you even the guys out front they're not perfect their cars aren't perfect nobody's done working on their car and i was thinking the same thing as much as he's yelling how would you like to be running 20th how bad that guy started driving [Music] reed takes the spot from his teammate now that he's found some speed up high top groove i like that i love running up there that's a great example right there of what this racetrack is as you see the tent car of amarola going after hamlin we didn't expect to see a multi-groove racetrack when we came here just didn't see that at any of the races prior 10 years ago but we sure have it today and kyle busch for the car that he's struggling with found something made the car better by moving in a different place in the racetrack one thing i like about running that high line on a day like today is that you don't use as much brakes so with the brake tip issues that a lot of these guys are having and just the pedal fading you can kind of give those brakes a break cool down and because when you run that bottom you got to slow the car down and get there you go run that top you just roll the car in off the brakes right up to the top of the racetrack as we see the battle up top for third guys i think we have to make a mention of chase briscoe right rookie season one nine times last year in the xfinity series gets the move up takes this ride over for clint boyer was running in the 12th position and and i bring this up jeff because you and i talked all week briscoe finally gets a little practice actually you know forget setups and all of that hey this is what a cup car is at nashville you know he's as close to even ground he's ever been and it's been a rough season with stuart haas no wins i mean they had four last year they've only led 57 laps we see the 10 and the four improving but i think this 14 you know we can't you know underestimate the challenges he's had currently running in the 12th and really just two cars behind him the 41 of cluster kind of the same wing got that win a year ago now in his sophomore season and he's you know right there in the 14th so all four shr cars top 15. that's a big swing big change that's a big change and i know there's hope they hope it's something they can build on for upcoming races you mentioned being a rookie what a what a tough time to be a rookie without practice kyle busch big slide right there with the back of the car we've already heard he's not happy as he got passed by eric almarola so almarola up to third ricky stenhouse jr catching it ricky stenhouse jr is 4.3 seconds behind kyle larson that's how good that five team is again this week and it's five seconds behind ricky stenhouse jr until you get to eric almarola great battle behind kyle right here with the 11 in the five or the four car of kevin harvick great digger trying to take a spot from the 11. then he faded a little bit still running that bottom didn't he haven't moved up the racetrack to find speed kevin's up there and have the momentum off of the high side down the front straightaway [Music] just a couple spots behind this battle you'll find the 42 car of ross chastain ross has finished seventh or better two of the last three weeks and i asked him before the race if he felt like they were really headed in the right trajectory and he said yes when we started this season we were terrible and i kept hitting things and he said now the car's a lot better and i'm not hitting people as much but he had a lot of confidence qualified 19 told me he felt like they could come away with the top 10 finish and that's where he's running right now parker all right kelly behind tim is joe logano who's fallen out of the top 10 he's fought entry security inside that race car but thankfully he has a very experienced team who can give him advice on how to help to fix that take a listen to one don't be afraid to back it up another half a curling down here if you have two three back yes that's it three and a half that's what i need right there yup that's what it is buddy good work keep digging that is the spotter tj majors who's giving real-time advice and expertise and backing up those corners helping that entry and getting better runs off but still can't find the entry security he needs marty parker it's been an adventurous day for tyler reddick trying to get another spot here from chase briscoe that would be the 12th position remember the spin leaving pit road earlier on so randall burnett had to talk him off the ledge a couple of times tyler was not happy with himself they've gotten them calmed down carr was way too loose now they're on the other side of it now it's a little bit too tight but very happy and making his way through the field if he can get by legano that would be for the 11th position tyler reddick randall burnett with a nice recovery for that cat chevrolet [Music] we expected to see tyler reddick or i think a lot of people thought tyler redick was going to run well here because of that high line that has come into play here you see tyler redick right up there trying to make that speed work carrying the momentum here at nashville super speedway as we go nascar nonstop [Applause] watch closely here cole custer of the right rear is about to shred and can he keep it off the wall he does get slowed down but you saw the right rear tire go down and part's starting to fly off that car now behind him and the caution has come out was running 14th we had talked about stuart hawes and how things were going for that team and program and now this issue for coal parker yeah he came across radio said he had no brakes and then the flat tire occurred so either hit something or some debris or that tire went flat or lost the brakes and obviously the tire went flat so they're trying to decipher that looks like the rotor exploded on the right rear or maybe the front and tore the right rear tire off of it and we now you know is there where is it where's the rotor where's all the debris can nascar make sure that the track is good and clean so that we don't have any more drivers running over debris and hit the fence you drivers i mean under caution you're looking at the racetrack saying hey there's debris here or there right you're on the radio telling people well you can't always see it though yeah i mean it's not as clear as you would think these are tiny little pieces of rotor inside of your fingernail that are that are going to cut that tire we saw a piece fly off as he was just coming out of turn four now you got to get the car jacked up all the way down the right side for anywhere else and see all the crew members picking it up [Applause] when they take the right rear off they'll take a look now and see what's happening with the brakes with 11 to go in the stairs yeah you see fire the fire's from brake fluid right steve yeah you assume the brake fluid or rubber wrapped around the brakes but road remains closed but they work this [Music] just talked about having a good day [Music] all right it's incredible the heat that the brakes generate steve talk about the i mean that's thousands of degrees oh yes absolutely it's over a thousand degrees you see everything i mean it's just completely cooked off between the water they put down and everything else i can't tell i was leaking fluid but obviously between the brake issue and the flat tire there's going to be something they're going to have to repair now this team should be able to repair and rejoin i don't believe they're going to be on the damaged vehicle because i didn't see them make contact with anything i think the caution was for the debris the big question now that would tend to go what do you do earlier the cost come out same time stage one chase elliott stayed on the racetrack from second it worked he won the stage but he's only been able to recover back up to the ninth position so now as the leaders pit again is it too late in the race to take the same game it looks like it is as chase elliott now will follow the leaders down pit road kelly eric almarola will pit from the third position he told his crew chief that they are really close in terms of balance on this race car he said he has just a little bit of rear slide on corner entry they're still going to make a little adjustment he said every adjustment you're making is headed in the right direction four tires for the ten marty kelly the code call from brian patty to ricky stenhouse jr is bravo we'll see if that's a two-tire stop versus a four-tire stop said the car was a little bit too free and didn't have the long run speed that he had on previous runs four tires foot's in-house meanwhile for kyle larson the four tires as well he said he was a little bit tighter on that run but he actually liked that but there were some takers on two tires there you see chase briscoe and tyler reddick gaining that track position with a two-tire call austin dillon did the same thing a two-tire stop there steve what do you think i mean they're only going to go you know eight seven laps maybe green flag laps can they stay in front of guys with four tires well so the question is you know you're assuming those guys with four tires are gonna pit in nine more laps because i think they may stay on the racetrack it really comes down to can you make that final stage on one stop i know this is gonna make everybody's head spin because nobody likes to talk about fuel mileage racing but that's really what it's about how far can you run on a tank of gas because if you can go from here to the end of the race on only one stop then i wouldn't pit again at the end of this stage if i can't then i do like the two tire call with the two tire call though you've got to be sure to keep those tires clean you got hot left side tires we saw how dirty the back straightaway was was with all kinds of tire debris you don't want to pick all that up on the left side tire you won't have any grip off into turn one on the restart so got to work this car really hard under caution to keep those tires clean rutledge rick you know we've seen a ton of support this weekend from nashville as a city for this track but we got to give it up first off we're over here at the rv party where we have seen all sorts of people luke combs cole swindell it's been a big party but obviously this has been supported by the artists in town they want to come out but take a look at those grandstands again a sellout crowd out here and hats off to eric moses and his amazing team to take a place like this that hasn't had fans in it for 10 years to do all the refreshing all the prep to get them back here to help them have as much fun as possible on a beautiful father's day weekend i know my dad's watching happy father's day to all the dads out there but guys what an amazing day it has turned out to be out here but now let's go down to the peacock pit box where we have jack kp and dj that's right rick tell you what kyle larson has been driving this rocket ship all month long who's impressed you behind him dj uh ricky stenhouse jr i believe is is the most impressive i did not see this coming although he ran well here uh in the xfinity series many years ago and completely different cars he's done an outstanding job here this afternoon yeah for me it's been daniel suarez uh guys like that that you don't usually see that are up there ross chastain has had a good run again today but i am constantly i guess i'm really surprised that these brake issues we just continue to see brakes come apart and the heat that they're putting in i didn't see that coming i got to be honest i did not see that coming uh until i talked to eric camarola down on the on the grid before the race started there was a lot of mystery about what it might be like bringing racing back to nashville what's been this track the fans all the above what's been the personality of this track so far dj it's completely different than what was anticipated when these drivers were getting ready to come over here everybody had always watched the races before heard that it was probably going to be a one groove track around the bottom and it's been everything but that it's provided great racing opportunities for drivers to move around in different grooves kyle larson seems to be able to go fast whatever group the most exciting thing to me is that right back there these people in the grand stands right back here the crowd i mean it's been a long time since i've been a racetrack where they were shoulder to shoulder seat to seat i mean that is pac-man and the excitement is you can cut it with a knife it's exciting and listen half of them are two-thirds of them are pulling for kyle larson so you've already nailed that one we're ready for a great finish let's get it over to parker thanks jack well kyle busch started this race in second has run majority of it in the top five but we have visibly seen how loose that race car is they cannot get the back end into the racetrack ben bayshore has been throwing adjustments at it but on this last stop they went to make a wedge adjustment didn't get the wrench in the rear window so they didn't get an adjustment in we'll see how that 18 reacts here when we go green kelly rick almeroll and this ten team have had just one top ten all season long no top fives and after winning the pole position earlier today crew chief mike bucker rabbits told me he didn't want to get too greedy he just wanted a nice clean day and to hope to come away with the top ten but after running much of the day inside that top five and putting down some of the fastest lap times on track they might have to set their set their sights excuse me a little bit higher marty well kelly the run of the season for ricky stenhouse jr and jtg darty racing up in the top five all day long lost some spots on this stop and send house wondered why they lost so much speed at the end of that run you gotta be fast to win the cup series you also have to be lucky this is the right rear tire it was going down during that run that's why they lost all that speed brian patty told me a moment ago that might have lasted two more laps top steve that was a very lucky break for the 47 to get the caution when they did yeah a huge break i mean with there was ten laps to go on the stage the death tire definitely would not have made it if it was losing air that fast another fortunate break for a couple guys are actually three matt devenedetto uh bubba wallace coyla joy all took the wave around with only six laps together that gets those three cars back on the lead lap we've got a full field of blue black cars 28 of them there'll be five to go lights are off on pace cars it will make its way down pit road see on the left-hand side two tires for briscoe and reddick larson on four we'll see if this two-tier gamble pays off for a stage win back up through the gears they go a great restart for briscoe chase elliot jumping up to the outside make it a three wide larson all ready to second larson to second working to the outside look at that mess three wide into three three right two rows four wide now they settle it back out william byron squeezing his way through in that 24 and now all over the back bumper for the lead larson trying to take it away from briscoe i'm not sure if two tires will hold larson off for four laps but it held them up for one maybe even two laps could be a dress rehearsal if we have a shootout over time finish clark is just too fast for briscoe but look at that three car he's he came out of that in third place he also is on two tires larson back out front looking for another play-off point as we see teammates now kyle bush in front of the 11 of denny hamlin teammates behind them with william byron and chase elliott as elliott looks to the inside a shallow entry for elliot that's going to cost him a little bit spinning behind him he saved it losing a ton of spots big slide what a catch as quite a few cars get by him now daniel suarez working to the inside of him coming up on the final two laps of stage two if you play fantasy check your garage if there's somebody you want out of the garage and into your field you got to do it now william byron going by that 11 car up into fifth position great rebound for this team after some issues early in the race showing some great speed what kind of a car does kyle bush have i think that's the question right now we've seen him struggling but we're also seeing him strong as well well he's frustrated with the handling but it's close enough that with the right adjustments he can i move kyle larson's dominated to see the final lap of this stage one of the challenges for larson when you're this good though is how much do you keep working on your car everyone behind you is making adjustments they know you're the guy they're chasing it's obvious how good he is but you have to continue to stay ahead of the track kyle busch got a good run off turn two on the top that time made big ground up on austin dillon austin still committed to the bottom of the racetrack kyle trying to make the top work now austin's underneath briscoe 12th stage win for kyle larson and that's the end of stage two good run for austin dillon chase briscoe william byron kyle bush denny hamlin chase elliott ricky stenhouse jr eric almarola and kevin harvick all a part of the top 10. i know steve the three of austin dylan is going to pit here most likely you know but putting points in the bank right putting them in the bank when you have an opportunity to get points get them when you can nice job nice call but nice job by the driver to take advantage of it and read it trying the same strategy did not work out how he planned watch him up here big slide oh boy almost takes eric marola with him here it's very thankful he did reddick ended up 17th at the end of that stage no points remember that three car boston dylan he had a broken jack earlier in the race and had to come back down pit road lost all his track position so getting points when they can yeah i mean just we have a great a great chase into the playoffs here a great lead up into the playoffs with a bunch of different tracks so you want to get all the points you can and it's hard to get points when this guy right here is doing this i mean 12 stage wins already i mean the most that for the whole season is 19. and we just came on the air guys so we're back we've got a lot of races to go to race one so he's had a great round i want to see what everybody does here though i do think the two tires are coming to pit road but larson and those guys i'm not sure if they need to come i think they're going to stay on the racetrack sure enough the five stays out right behind them the three of austin dillon and chase briscoe making their way on to pit road parker that was a great strategy called by justin alexander there to take those two tires on the three and get those stage points an awesome run by austin they actually want to take some of the justices out he said no put four tires on it it'll be good for chase briscoe there you visibly saw it he mentioned on the radio i was just way too loose to hang onto the lead there on those two tires marty on the near spin and near loss of the car for tyler reddick he said hey that one's on me again referring back to qualifying earlier today and randall burnett said what do you need help with he said i'm a little bit too tight still tight dealing with that got to get him back in the game though they clearly have a fast car if they can make sure that he keeps his head on straight i think that's the biggest thing for tyler reddick right now the car was sideways but he was able to save it and you know that every position is important what a battle going on between the 24 and 18. so well next weekend on nbcsn it's the cup series double header from pocono raceway again last year it was harvick and denny who won during that doubleheader it will be saturday at 3 p.m eastern sunday at 3 30 and xfinity series also running on sunday so a double header double header on the pokemon weekend nate ryan sat down and talked with kyle larson this last week and we'll talk a lot about what last year was like for kyle larson he talked about that you know obviously he wished that last year didn't happen but um a lot of ways he said he was glad it did because it helped him grow as a person so we'll dive into that a lot more next week at pocono as we get ready for the restart here larson and william byron teammates side by side does the 24 have anything for the five good push by kyle bush kyle larson and kyle was ready for that restart kyle bush he's gonna help this five car clear his teammate off a turn two william byron you're gonna see what he can do he was the fastest car in practice at good speed worked his way all the way back through his field but behind his teammate pretty equal equipment here kyle bush though back there in the back losing a spot to his teammate denny hamlin got himself back up in the top five trying to fend off chase elliott down into turn one you think there's frustration for chase elliot as we see him work into the inside of ricky stenhouse jr the defending series champion and right now he's running third as far as his hendrick teammates in front of him kyle larson was such success and now we see william byron up there talking to him this morning on the peacock pit box i sense no frustration he seemed to be ready for today kyle larson in that 47 car drove into turn one didn't get to the bottom chase haley got by him and now he's under attack from kurt busch one little slip like that and everybody around you sees it they're trying to take advantage of it oh that 18 almost in the fence what a save look at the run kurt busch has in the one as he goes to the outside yeah of chase chase had to lift for whatever reason kyle bush almost in the wall he's gonna lose three spots right there those are three important spots the further back you got it ill-handling car that clean air can help you but as you fall back further and further that ill handling car gets way way worse so each spot here he's spotty loses let's take another look off turn two in the gas just back has no grip look at that looks like he's right running a dirt late model on the boards right there barely maybe touch that right rear quarter and he's trying to hold off losing another position to kevin harvick down here to turn one harvick rolls that bottom and i think we're wondering now who learned the most in the first two stages with this last stage in front of us you know was it kevin harvick say who's moving up toward the front william byron what did that team learn denny hamlin yeah and your guaranteed yellers are behind you the stages are behind you so we may have a bunch more yellows or we may not we may want 105 to the finish so you have to continue to take and be aggressive and that's i think what you're seeing as you mentioned junior when somebody wiggles or lose any momentum people attack right away there's no give and take there's no patience they don't know if they'll have this field closed back up again or not accomplish losing another spot to chase briscoe behind him chastain and amarola two guys i think have a little bit more pace right now also going to be right on the doorstep of that 18 car down the front straight away a little push from the 42 tim's going to have an opportunity to make a move here you see what kyle busch has done he was struggling up top and just decided i'm going to put it down the bottom couldn't keep it on the bottom right there try to commit to it and just oh we got a spinner behind spinning a turn two 37's around ryan truck series winner from friday got a right front tire he was running 23rd when he spun smart move right there not to drive it off the bank and onto that flat tear the nose up kept it on the bacon point in the right direction something now this is the car that was talking about the vibration and brakes earlier today [Music] you see the sparks on that right side a lot of flat tires a day and they seem to all i mean they don't have a lot of time on them so definitely some debris i think the concern now is just trying not to drag the sway bar link off or anything like that any damage any of the right front just suspension wear the splitter off on the right front edge [Music] right side help me get the jack under there they're to jack up the right sides yeah they're going to jack up here get back over here we can't go we can't go we can't go we can't go yeah you can't go there's nowhere to go all right so the confusion here this is something i would have this is something we're going to review on monday because it's unfortunate to have a flat but they didn't have to go through all that i mean they just picked it up reasonably high enough so our leaders are on pit road here kelly handful of them anyway that's ross chastain in the number 42 car he's just been loose it started uh in qualifying earlier today they've been working and working to try to tighten that car up but that has been his biggest issue it's going to be four goodyear tires for the 42 marty alex bowman comes in from the 13th position man it's been a struggle for this 48 team today of course the contract extension announced on friday for fresh goodyear tires on one stop they put a spring rubber in made a wedge adjustment and a track bar adjustment trying to get that car to handle better he's been loose now the car a little bit too tight for bowman getting ready for the restart again john carter cash talked us through our open earlier johnny cash talked about legend as a dad so [Music] uh [Music] [Music] welcome back to nashville super speedway a sellout crowd here we've got a hundred laps left the fans have had a great deal great day out here you see that hashtag nashkar rick it seems like the fans are up for it what do you think we're gonna see in this last hundred laps buddy well i think that's the question and we've been you know excited to find out what it was going to be like coming back to nashville for racing the fans obviously got a great show all weekend with the truck series race on friday saturday a beautiful one there as well so the fans you know they're in store for a great one here as we get ready for the final 100 laps then you can go inside the headset with access to nascar scanner for only 299 a month listen in on the pit strategy which we've seen some already today spotter communication crew chief calls just visit nascar.com scanner and start your subscription today should have started that description this morning because there has been some great scanner yes audio uh and i don't think we're done with it with 99 to go let's take a look at what happened to ryan freeze down into turn one got a little replay here car sideways right there yeah we're here when he lost brakes so his corner entry speed obviously quite a bit higher than he was hoping for did a nice job keeping it out of the wall unfortunate for ryan priests and now these two will line up once again hendrick motorsports drivers the 24 and kyle larson you mentioned it junior that 24 william byron he's been fighting his way up through the pack very fast yesterday let's see what he's got right here on this restart lining up with kyle larson can he take the fight to kyle larson so far we haven't seen it but with this improved track position can he take advantage of it you see three hendrick motorsports cars in the top four right now once again another strong weekend but there are still 98 laps to go here we go great flag back in the air [Music] [Applause] here comes the 11. denny hamilton fighting down low but chase elliot not giving him any room i thought byron was wiping out the five car right there great job by him and larson to see it and react and the row behind them not to try to drive in there you know make it 43 wide four wide a lot of discipline right there oh now loose chase elliot sideways the 11 close to making contact there they're able to straighten it back out used tires man used tires on restarts on a concrete track so many so much marbles and debris look at the 18 car here fighting three wide on the outside fading backwards he continues to drop back through the field well the struggle he has right now dale is and you know what this is like some of these cars have fresher tires than him as you lose that track position now the fresher tires are at your rear bumper making it even harder the other 42 and the six colliding i'll push on the outside three wide of that battle not sure that's really where he wants to be yeah man made a little bit of contact with the wall way up the racetrack now goes kyle oh man he fought all day long with an ill-handling car and hung around in that top five but things are getting really bad right now in 18th place dropping back even further you have to wonder if there's a problem right as slow as he is right now we've heard a lot of people talk about cutting tires parker and he came on the radio and had the team look at the left front right as that restart got done there so definitely some sort of issue maybe potentially a rub on the left front or left front going down right now on the 18th you see it's really slow just trying to get out of everyone's way maybe a little bit of contact with somebody has bit that left front a little bit but i just think it's a bad handling car now in deep deep rubs and traffic even worse and like you said steve all these guys around him with new tires it's impossible he's in a no-win situation nobody can overcome that no what he's doing now which as frustrating as it is he's doing a nice job just not getting run over right when you're this far off the pace there's nothing he can do but stay out of the way don't make it worse at least have a car to bring to your crew next time for service hopefully they can find some sort of repair or adjustment or something to make this car more competitive gives an opportunity to shout out to jj yelly in that 51 running in the 25th position 26th position right now maybe taking it from taking a spot for kyle busch there they've ran on the lead lap all day long team usually not finishing or running this well they're doing a great job today just his fifth start for jj yaley here in the 2021 season i i just don't believe that's just a bad family car i think they've got a problem i mean it's as slow as he is these cars that he's running around he should easily be able to run with well and you've heard his frustration uh you know and i actually believe that kyle and crew chief ben baker this year one of their signatures is i think they've made cars better especially in the second half of this regular season so that would answer more questions right jeff if something's going wrong under the hood what the suspension or something's bent something you know why is it not responding to the adjustments they obviously know what they have kyle toast before the race they made major changes this morning and it's just not reacting like they'd hoped he called it wholesale we made wholesale changes before we went out there to qualify and remember he qualified second and he said he was so close to getting the poll that was frustrating for him and now to be this far off with just 91 laps to go in the race he's the second a lap off of the leader and and you know i you just don't handle that bad his teammate martin trex jr was really struggling early in the race he was a half second off not a full second kelly things were so bad for martin truex jr at one point they thought about going under the hood just to make sure nothing was broken instead they made a packer adjustment that seems to have paid off on top of that they made two pit stops 11 laps apart and it is a good thing they did because that second time down pit road at the end of stage two they found a cut in the right rear tire so that one was probably just moments away from going bad i'm not sure the reason but this is the most cut tires i can remember in recent history i have to think dale you've mentioned it earlier it goes back to the original brake problems right some rotors have failed put the debris on the racetrack and just a ton of cut tires mark trucks junior has battled back though running 12 right now take a look at this restart here with william byron down into turn one he's going to get loose hot tires a little debris on those tires larson though he sees it you know that peripheral vision he senses what's happening on the inside moves up the racetrack or else that could have been big for both those guys and then chase elliott off of turn four with denny hamlin underneath the back of his car big slide and that makes your tires pretty mad as well and then we've seen kyle bush just a struggle he's had a little scrape of the wall 99-38 having a little contact daniel man go easy giving that 38. and anthony alfredo he's run well today too he's 20th marco what do you have on kyle guys just to add on to that story the team ben bashar and the spotter were going back and forth on the second radio having not heard anything from kyle so the spotter asks can you hear us go to the center racetrack kyle responded with i can hear you i have nothing to report that was the end so maybe just the hill handling 18 car right now as you said junior just back in traffic what about no lettering on the left rear tire i mean is it is he rubbing somewhere he's seen it all day long i mean i think on low air pressure it might be getting into the inside of the rear quarter panel and just rubbing the letters off maybe create some unnecessary temp in that tire making it loose well or if it is you know what's moving around to allow that to happen is something in the back of the car bending more than it should in a different position good point too shifting around these teams work very hard to get the car in the proper aerodynamic position not just height but how twisted the car could go down the straightaway how much you can get the tail to the right is there something with this car that is not right i mean he definitely looks like a sheet metal's knocked in a little bit above that tire but it's just not good well look at his hand look at his hands with this shot when he drives in the corner right it's all to the left right tells me the front of his car is not doing anything he wants it to do just sit there turn in the car hoping it'll turn it won't rotate a couple of cars that came to pit road get four tires on that last caution chastain all the way up to 12th place not very many drivers been able to take their cars and drive through the field even with tires but that 42 has had pace all weekend they've had a couple of good weeks you know not really running that great not running good at all up until last few weeks they found some good pace in this car and he's showing out some of that i know he's run cup but not in competitive equipment some of that's learning how to race got a caution oh we got a car in the grass on the back stretching 23 of bubba wallace again back there leader just off at two halfway down the back straight away yeah had to wonder how that happened left side tires are up well he came on the radio and thought he had an issue with the left rear just about a lap or two before that happened there so i wonder if maybe that left rear is going down or maybe even a little more issues there everything looks good on air pressures 10th caution today i mean we've seen a lot of these races run green green green this thing has been caution filled let's see a replay here for what happens 23's on the inside of somebody off of turn two oh so no there was always three wide and i don't think bubba knew that mcdowell on the inside of someone so bubba comes up up off the corner and gets into the left rear of michael who is a little bit lower than bubba anticipated bubba thought they were too wide but nope so caution number 10. a lot of cautions today i think that's one of the things that we haven't seen a lot of this season yeah and we're seeing a plethora today well we talked at the top of the show jeff you talked about the shape of the racetrack how it's very different from everything we've seen we've had a little mechanical issues on top of that some cut tires had a little bit of everything that you know slowed the pace down changed the pace and the running order other than the leader has changed up dramatically front to back larson though has controlled the race for 186 laps kelly chase elliott on his way down pit road pitting from the third position he said he's just too free starts off good but then he loses rear security as he runs he also says he needs a little bit more to lean on more turn four tires for the nine his teammate william byron said he's just a little bit too tight like two numbers on the tight side he pitched now he can just hit road from second marty kelly steve has talked about the track going through a transition kyle larson reporting that saying he's been three on this run freer than he's been all day long and didn't like it so they're gonna make an air pressure adjustment to tighten them up everybody fitting here larson will win the race off pit road they cannot make it all the way they're going to be about 10 laps short for making it to the end from here pretty good little battle there coming off of pet road not for larson he was easily off first but harvick gaining quite a few spots and the 42 of ross jason is going to stay out we'll continue to watch an after our cup series ally 400. racing will be back here in nashville that's the korean war veterans memorial bridge they'll race over that that's on august 8th for the indycar series at music city grand prix 5 30 eastern rut rick i found the swimming pool but i also found something that reminded me a lot of what you guys are talking about so much today a rotor i got this frisbee here so steve help everybody understand we know in so many tracks all of them run of course a rotor and a caliper but why are teams running a rotor that's smaller and thinner here what's the trade-off because that seems to be the big part failure today well basically you have a few different options um there's three or four different ones that teams could run you're on heavier roads with the short tracks you don't want to run anything heavier than needed i just think teams underestimated the amount of brake usage in the race parker said in his practice he didn't use very much and the race used a lot we'll see how it works on this restart let's see what happens with ross chastain he stayed out kyle larson was the first off of pit road on four fresh tires much will that positioning help ross chastain as he's going to be under attack now for second and that was tight there with william byron in the middle three wide harvick backs up turn three gonna try to get a run off the corner 42 here right behind harvick kurt busch having a really strong day today gaining a lot of points if they can finish this off still another stop though steve right i mean too many laps as far as fuel as we see hamilton go way up the racetrack yeah 77 laps a little bit further than we think we can run a couple cars bubble walls and mike miguel did come down and fill up their tanks right before green so maybe they have the option to stretch it but it would be a long ways denny hamilton middle of the track now as chase briscoe is working the low line to get by him joey logano will try to get by as well eric alvaro we talked about him winning the poll earlier today was up front that's a pretty good lapse run fell to the back now trying to fight his way back up handling way up the racetrack he's struggling a little bit here trying to stop the bleeding a little bit he's going to run eric a little tight finish the corner and he's going to keep it back there behind him the 20 and the 19. a bit of a rebound for both those guys push for bell truex back of that line right there or near the back of the line you see that white and blue forward for brad kozlowski a little pinball here between swords he gets loose comes down catches the 19. no harm no foul but guys brad just i mean we haven't said his name much today because he's kind of been mid pack all day this is another great look at it on the helmet from spores i mean currently running in the 14th position your left rear here jeff we i mean he's playing here right we haven't seen brad move forward or backwards he's just been kind of middle of the top 20. it's been a struggle all day see this fight still continues amarola trying to clear denny hamlin denny hamlin knows that amarola on the bottom of the racetrack just just simply out drove him getting in the turn oh the 14's up the wall briscoe turned three and four missed the corner got to the fence and the caution comes out [Music] oh man decision time decision looks like the air pressures are up on that car but he just went into turn three went straight up the racetrack just barely you know got to the wall a little bit but not super hard not sure exactly what happened to the bottom right here bring it to the bottom parker he lost his brakes guys came on the radio and said i lost my brakes he's running his seventh having a good day how many people have had brake problems today ross chastain sitting there running in third steve we he he stayed out and was able to hang on he had the lead but was able to hang on in third so chastain did settle in good with third one guy was having a great run had a 17 second pit stop the 47 of ricky stenhouse jr i was kind of wondering where he cycled out and and it was a slow pit stop we've heard a lot about brakes today another car with brake feels listen in what the 24 has to say we're having brake issues we didn't have enough brakes a lot of people exploding rotors that's a lot of the bosses i got you yeah my brakes feel good like i haven't really had any issues with travel just kind of sometimes takes a little longer to stop than others when i'm back in traffic a lot of conversation up and down pit road i mean there was practice but the first time the cup cards had been here and it's uh so that's two brake issues on the stuart house cars we heard harvick complain a little bit today about his brakes as well now the decision is do you come to pitt road if you were outside of your window are you in it now and does that make the decision to come and top off this will put you closer 42 of chastain is the first guy to come and he gets a pretty long line of cars to follow suarez is also down there kelly remember ross chastain has been a little bit off pit sequence he last came to pit road on lap 198 so they've now hit their fuel window of course and needed to bring him to pit road he said the car has been the best it's been all race marty other than chastain kind of 12th on back came down pit road brad keselowski among them and yeah you guys are right they just haven't had the speed today right in front of him ricky's in-house junior and yes they went from the top six all the way back to 18th that was just fuel only for stenhouse jr to make sure they can make it to the end they had a problem with the left front on the last stop that's why they lost all those positions so it's a little different strategy see we talked about this if you were listening in on scanners or the radios maybe a strategy call here we kind of wondered as we see some work continues on brad because last year we showed the replay where he banged off a few cars probably cleaned up the sheet metal you know i this is an awful thing to say i don't care who wins the race i'm not a fan of anybody i'm just ready to see a good race but my stomach kind of churned for kyle larson in the five when you have a car that dominant you wonder how can this go wrong well this is one way it can go wrong they have chose track position 71 to go it could be fine should be fine but we're pretty confident they can't make it these other guys can make it marty so when you ask how can this race slip away from kyle larson fuel mileage is one thing i've now added to the list yeah well watching this caution and i think they're curious to see how long this one goes is there another one cliff daniels who told them before they went back green we're about six laps short from being able to make it to the end and i think a lot of the guys in the top 10 were thinking track position behind him kevin harvick actually got some damage on that last restart on the right front harvick said i think we're in trouble here but rodney childress said if we pit we're done we're going to stay out and you got to live with it look at most laps leading the season already 1 356 laps led by kyle you talked about it steve that you know how could he lose this race well he's had three races where he's led the most laps and someone else has won atlanta with laney accomplished one at kansas where he led 132 laps dover he led 263 laps and bowman wins could be another case today where that's the dominant car but situations and strategy gives the win to someone else there's chase briscoe just said he had a break problem just too much speed getting into the corner and ended up getting up into the wall nice job not to have any worse impact than that and on pit road they looked at the right rear yeah that car the same issue with the 41. i tell you you know it's funny the things that remind you for moments in your career unfortunately i learned all about having the wrong brake package on the car the hard way it was a pocono i was jeff gordon's crew chief and everybody remembers this probably one of the worst wrecks of his career you see the damage and it was the same thing that we're seeing here currently we had the wrong roader versus the cooling it had enough brakes to slow the car down but repeatedly all day long it finally damaged the rotor enough that going down over 200 miles an hour the right front rotor explodes unfortunately my poor driver jeff gordon goes into the wall and turn one out i mean that was the longest time in the world until i saw him climb out or talk to me on the radio and as a as a crew chief you know there's so many boxes to check at a new track you have tires and setup and arrow and pit crews and pitch strategy and all this stuff it's you know it's not one team i guess is what i'm saying jeff right there's multiple teams multiple organizations that have missed the brake usage here that's right and it's and we talked about it the front straightaway is longer than charlotte so the brakes cool down a lot down these long straights and you get tons of heat in them all at once similar to pocono i know it's completely different types of racetracks but a similar issue but now for larson's strategy to play out he's going to need another caution he has under three there you go three laps going on three laps now and then 70 laps he can make that work maybe good luck here bry william byrne oh chase ellie trying to make it three wide goes all the way down to the apron has to come back on the track and now slows down as harvick able to get by easily here comes harvick trying to work to the outside of william byron [Music] hmm mid-pack i mean we showed you the front two or three these guys are kind of sorted out they're too high back here but it was three and four right now they're they're looking to go three wide again as chastain climbs the hills getting the outside of dylan couldn't quite get there he's not afraid to go up there he's got those new tires and he feels good about the stevens car he's trying to make it work and take every spot he can while he has everybody so close together using a high side there at 42 car use those new tires and if the sink does run green be the first guy best on fuel right i mean this sounds silly rick but this could be the race for the win if it falls your way and you have to kind of coach your driver that way like hey the 42 you're racing the three you have the same fuel strategy that's a very important position for us trying to get to that back buffer of kevin harvick you can get him a little bit loose and he drives down in there deep trying to upset the back of that car couldn't get close enough loose made himself loose yeah got so close to him it pulled the air off of his car larson byron harvick elliott curt bush top five kevin harvick a year ago one of the most dominant cars on the racetrack and denny hamlin were winning every other race it seemed like and now those are the two that are still winless in 2021. well think about it we went to pocono last year for the double header and they both won those races and they haven't won this year at all that's how i mean it's crazy to think that they dominated the way they did last year just had not been unreplicated hey jeff remember harvick was worried about that right front damage under the caution and he kind of wanted to pit rodney children said man if we pit we're in real trouble then and all the way in the back of the pack but i don't think that right front damage has really affected it that much it's kind of hard to see with the black paint scheme but he got it on the last restart yeah much it was pretty clean yeah [Music] this is the time of day we've seen this track change so much get really loose for a lot of these guys but this track's starting to tighten up a little bit these last few laps all the way to the end guys that are free the track should come to them guys that are tight gonna have a harder harder time keeping this car working on the bottom they're gonna chase up the racetrack use that higher groove he shows his struggles kyle bush he's back in 20th trying to work himself back up to the back drives underneath tyler reddick right here pretty wide line of contact bubba wallace tyler reddick kyle bush all fighting for the same position did you see his hands yes i mean cross grip like he was pulling into a parking spot he had to move the wheel so far party hey rick we heard the conversation a moment ago between cliff daniels and kyle larson about the fuel mileage well here's that whole conversation do you think i could save enough yeah you'll be able to let's get it stretched out and i'll communicate that to you don't think i'll have you go to that other page just yet but what you were doing there that last run was pretty good keep that up and then i'll let you know from there so the first part of that was we are three laps short so junior i'm assuming as a driver you want to know as soon as you have to right that you got to save fuel but so far cliff daniels has said do what you're doing i don't want you to go into saving mode yet 61 to go but they've got to save a little bit to make it to the end i think it's a little concerning i don't know if you guys see the drill of that car looks like there's quite a bit of debris on the front of that number five but i'm sure they're giving him all the information they can on lifting and where he needs to live they're doing they know all this they talk about this in in the shop so he knows exactly what to do inside the car to save as much as he needs to save so this should be pretty straightforward for this five team to save what they need and when they say paige it's still all in the good area of the grill so it should do a whole lot to your water temp we'll see if the 51 can help us out when we get there and that's the fourth time this today they've had debris on the grill so he's got experience getting it off the grill all three times previous to this he's been able to get it off let's see if he can use live traffic to do it this time he says the good area that's the area where it's covered right already with tape and so forth but there is a little spot on that left side where there's a piece of debris over the holes that they need for cool air yeah and when he was mentioned about fuel he said paige i assume he's gonna move a page on the dash to give him some sort of feedback and the good area of the grill is a big portion of that grill allows air in but it's actually limited downstream and it really has nothing to do with what's on the front because more air goes in that can be used off to the side a little bit is where a lot of guys adjust the tape i mean there's a lot of different stuff but it actually looks a little thin like almost air could go through it almost like tissue paper but we'll have to just listen and see if the temp gets you yeah we saw the 51 of jj yelling he's up there in front but not running nearly as oh and more picked up some more out a coach isn't he's like that's all good don't worry about it you can play seven so far on the temps by the way you can see over on the left side it's honeycomb there's larger holes that's where some of that newer debris has gotten to he's got a lap car right here about i don't know 40 car lengths in front of him 51 of jj yaley he can get up behind that car and try to get that debris off that's the bad part of the grill you don't want that left side covered that's what he needs to do so he hopes that the temps can stand however much time it takes for him to catch this 51. when he gets there it should be able to come right off and on top of that he's still you wanted to wear what do you get 51's aware 51 is going to help or understand that he's going to use him spotter's gone the two spotters have gotten together on top of the tower had a conversation [Music] plus 15 so they've got mark that they want to be at water temp and it's 15 higher than that right now jeff two laps just gone from plus seven to plus 16. so i don't know steve if that would concern you much well i mean you definitely want to try to get it off i wouldn't have worried about it a plus seven but at plus 15 you definitely want to get some you know want to get the debris off the grill not to mention remember if this turns into a fuel mileage an engine that runs hot is definitely less efficient i love to watch this though how good these drivers are at getting up behind another car and getting this type of debris off the grill it's fun to watch like a heart the dilemma here he has a two second lead over william byron but he's trying to catch up to the 51 to use the 51 to get the debris off of the grill and he's more than likely not in fuel savings mode because he's trying to get there as fast as he can so this is going against what he's trying to do in terms of fuel mileage he's already led 210 laps and this is the eighth time larson has led 200 plus laps in a race but only one once in prior seven so kyle larson trying to get this debris fixed catching up now to yale we'll see if he gets right up to the back bumper to clear that off rick the interesting thing is that cliff daniels just told him a moment ago you're doing enough on the fuel savings front i don't need you to do any more so i think he may have met that satisfaction and there goes that debris from the 51 just like you planned it right jeff amazing you know they're going to let him go you got all of it there you go you got all of it spotter gave him the information now the only thing he's focused on is saving fuel the only thing that matters and remember cliff daniels a crew chief he can look at that data to understand how much fuel is flowing through that and how much fuel he can save kyle's like all right you told me i got it all but i just want to make sure so he got up behind that 51 again on the back straightaway that one piece on the inside left side that's one they added that's one something the team has added throughout the race the gorilla's completely clear now nice job and just keep managing those inputs so a hurdle they had to get over was debris on the front of the car and that goes away and when it goes away cliff daniels becomes a lot happier crew chief more nascar nonstop so kyle larson still out front a 2.7 second lead over william byron a lot of celebrities here today for a very enjoyable afternoon beautiful command out of luke combs chris janssen entertain the crowd here with a pre-race concert cece gave the invocation brad paisley co-hosting the pre-race show with dale jr kyle petty played the opry last night that was awesome states running back alvin kamara has been up and down pit road and of course pitbull he's here co-owner of track house racing musicians athletes all like enjoying the return to nashville for the cup series nascar cup series ally 400 from nashville super speedway and kyle larson a little bit of drama i'm not going to say it was a lot but there was a little bit of drama there as he has now led 220 laps but a little bit of temperature coming up on the front of that car because of the debris that was there it was cleared off now kyle larson is going to be close on fuel so we're going to have to keep our eye on that too kelly behind him is teammate william byron who's had such a strong day a strong weekend really remember he was fastest in practice and they attributed that largely to his experience in the truck race friday night that afforded him the comfort to go out strong in practice from lap one but remember they started from the rear of the field after an unapproved adjustment prior to qualifying so they had to make up all of that ground two words have been preached to william over and over by taboy to spotter that is patience and discipline and it might take a little discipline because the team has told william he's about two laps short on fuel marty kelly we've seen the strength from ricky stenhouse jr and jtg doherty racing remember that pit stop they had a little while ago that sent them back in the field well they have driven from 18th to 10th and have consistently been one of the five fastest cars on the racetrack for the last 15 laps since we went back green and i talked to brian patty a moment ago he said if we can get a caution and bunch up with everyone else we can continue to grunt in the top five as he gets another spot right there from christopher bell moving in tonight parker behind him back in 13th as daniel scores that 99 track house racing car travis mattis crew chief came on the radio a little bit ago and said we're the third of the cars that can make it not thinking that any of those cars that didn't pit can make it and therefore take care of it we're in a great position here this could be a huge day for trackhouse racing in town that they're calling home that they want to build a shop in downtown this could be one of the biggest days this young team's life here although he just came on radio and said i'm having brake issues on the 99. watching chase elliot struggle just a little bit as he fades back watch the hands check this out he's moving the wheel in there you know you watch these guys go around the racetrack and if you're not looking at his hands you never thought he was sideways but just how much difficulty there is going around this racetrack for these guys slick race track challenging hot it's fun to watch so steve we see on the left side lap since pit 42 we know that there's 39 to go you mentioned that pit windows right around 65 to 70. so obviously this is going to be a little bit of a tricky run for some of these guys up front yeah well the key is those guys that are 32. look right here you got chastain 32 laps stenhouse 32 laps suarez 32 laps so they have 10 more laps of fuel on board than the leader of larson but we continue to hear over the radio then discuss the fuel how am i doing saving compared to him better you've been better every lap so far and you're still faster so keep it up give me just a little bit more do it on the corner entry side of things just keep backing up your lips on entry so basically fuel savings is a bit of an art and a bit of a science you know you can science it out all you want but the driver has to go accomplish it they have obviously a plan that they've discussed well before today on how they would like to save fuel because they don't have to go piece by piece right they're talking the same language without us getting all the information so it's either less break out of the throttle sooner means somehow you have to be right right there guys i mean somehow you have to be using less fuel so usually it's less break into the corner and less time it wide open well watch what he does goes full throttle right full throttle all those green dots he comes off the throttle right really early just stays away from the throttle lets it roll uses very little break keep that rolling resistance down goes back to throttle nice and smooth and easy you heard cliff daniel say give me more on corner entry there it is he's way out of the gas early and you can almost run about the same lap time you just use less brake and allow the car to coast down into the corner that used to make me mad save me some fuel and you go faster like what have i been doing all day what is that doing wrong he stretched the lead out so is william byron saving more or going a little bit slower around these uh the turns at least well you heard cliff daniel say that kyle larson was actually saving more fuel so listen has been faster like when you're faster and you lift earlier or even the same point it rolls easier let's listen to what they're talking about william byrne back to saving a little bit back to saving he brought the earlier lift less break earlier less break that's what kyle's doing so just so everybody's clear every team can look at the data coming from every bit of their competition so they're just sitting there looking at the data saying all right here's how much brake pressure he's using here's when he's getting out of the gas and all that information coming back to william byrne now in this case they're using it to save fuel in other cases they use it to try to help the driver understand where he's giving up speed that data's just really valuable meanwhile 34 to go brad kozlowski a moment ago we were talking about him back in the 15th position but now he is the last car on the lead lap about to go down a lap kyle larson closing in on him even saving fuel keslowski like everyone else saying the brakes do not feel right it feels soft so steve your driver if you were out there and he was saying those things what do you do ride it out at this point with 33 to go i'm sure you're concerned for your driver you don't want another brake failure like we've seen today well you have to be honest you have to let them know there have been some brake failures let them know the real situation but you do have to i mean you have to ride it out you can't come in there's not a repair you're going to do at this point you can't change your your brake package uh i i always found though you got you know like your mother and father told you honesty the best policy you know your job is to let him know that what he's feeling we have seen before and allow brad to find a comfort level to complete these laps but imagine if you're a driver out there and all of a sudden something does not feel right and you've seen cars have failures and issues and hit the fence and you're sitting there your day's not going well you're not doing you're not fast and now you might hit the wall any minute in your mind that's the way you think is that man this thing is there's a problem developing and i don't want to crash right i don't want to hit the wall hard and so it's such a tough thing to do when you have loose wheels and all kinds of other things to gut it out and stay on the race track well you saw right there keselowski out of the gas really early he's being super careful here or maybe he just has no brakes at all where he can't even use them and he is crawling into these corners one team using either more fuel or better tires or the combination of both the 42 of ross chastain is outside his teammate kurt bush and right here you see him he's driving up to the sixth position so you know plus 10 since you put tires on it's hard to say whether the fresh tires are helping or just the fact that he doesn't have to worry about fuel let's listen in to the nine team right in front of him i think i've got either a loose right rear or a tire that's coming apart yeah it's gotten worse like the last couple but i'll keep you posted feels loose right here and then alan gustafson asked chase how much confidence do you have in that right rear and he said as much as i can have they're opting obviously but leave them out on track now but the picker certainly sprung into action when he first called over the radio so we'll keep an eye on that night same conversation as the brakes rick in the end no one knows listen buddy we're here we're ready if you get to a point where you're uncomfortable you need to pit i'm going to support you right wrong or indifferent because because it's all in your hands i have no idea what you're feeling in the severity of and as a driver it it it's such a difficult call to make i mean it's so difficult you know if you fit right now you're you know your day is cooked it just didn't go well and and also i don't know that every crew chief has had that same conversation with their driver steve you make it sound like uh it's that's a really nice thing you're saying but i mean i'm in the car and i'm maybe my crew chief hasn't given me that confidence that he's behind me if i think i need to come to pitt road i'm sensing this conversation didn't happen 10 years ago it didn't didn't happen between me and steve well no i'm saying no steve steve was always very supportive but i've had some situations where i felt like you know man i was on an island and that's a tough thing for a driver it's late in the race you don't want to you throw the race away you give it all away when you come to pit road to tighten up a loose wheel and you're the one that made that choice no one else in the pits made that choice but you it's a tough thing to do and the one time you pitted and they said we found nothing wrong oh we've all done it you found nothing wrong well then what do you do the next time well the other thing i'll add though is with the lug nut rule if i'm alan gustafsson i have to decide whether i'm just going to pin him anyway and tighten it up because if you're in the race you have two lug nuts loosen the right rear off the wheel like really loose then you won't be around next week so that's another new little wrinkle into this lug nut conversation kelly just ahead of chase elliott ross chastain who is now back inside the top five remember he came to pitt road at lab 229 so his tires are 10 laps fresher but more importantly he is good to go for sure on fuel so if these other teams can't save enough he looks to be in the cat bird seat ross chastain 7.6 seconds back and 26 laps to go seems like a lot of time well you know he also is not in the playoffs he would be an outside guy jumping in to the playoffs with a win today he's 20th in points so if he were to win this race look what it does to buscher look what does the reddit because it moves them down and it has not been a smooth start to his chip ganassi racing cup series campaign like we state this time and time and time again sundays are tough these guys are great front to back and you know ross though has continued to improve that's what you look out of any young driver this would be quite the improvement i'm glad they've stuck with it to see that improvement hey ganassi not a lot happening for that team this year for the last several weeks things have gotten better and here we are today having a breakout run yeah fourth at cota just a couple races ago and seventh most recent race out at sonoma so things picking up as you mentioned and now a situation where he can run wide open where everybody else is looking at their you know the fuel saving and i think too everything that he's drove up to this point in the xfinity series and the trucks this this type of racetrack this type of spoiler and downforce and power this really lends more to ross and what he probably feels more comfortable with probably been a wake-up call driving you know the low power high downforce car trying to figure out what to do that thing how to make that work so so one story i want to circle back around to you talk about full fuel on the 42 so he can run hard kyle larson we continue to talk about saving gas the telemetry once again comes in lifting very early let me throw some wrinkles in this there isn't a fuel gauge so it's a lot of math calculations jeff you are assuming it was completely full the last time you came down pit road a little bit of air in the system when you put when you plug that gas can in you know if you don't pick up as much then that messes up your calculations you know it's still a calculated guess i mean there are some assumptions in this equation well with a with a four second lead i think you have to factor that in right lift even sooner save way more fuel than you think you may have to can i throw one more wrinkle at you crew chief we just went 47 clean flag laps that's the longest green flag run that we have seen today well i'm also talking to my driver we can't just focus on fuel how's your car because we have another piece of debris hit a tire we've seen yellows we've seen all kinds of issues we've seen break problems if the caution comes out we're done with fuel now we're the short run do we need tires two verse four what kind of adjustments how good have you been in the 20 lap sprint so there's a lot of fuel plenty good on fuel and no reason to push it at this point kyle larson from cliff daniels and what they've been comparing to is ross chastain that's the car they're worried about but he was waiting to give him that word he just got it you can go as hard as you want now so also the communication click daniels on that last restart was we're low on fuel but i don't want you to save fuel now i want you to go ahead and take off why because if you get a caution you're going to need short run speed and you need to understand what your car is going to do so you can communicate that to your crew chief so kyle larson took off in that last restart he knows what he had and and i can assure you cliff daniels knows that well and he's already got that in his brain steve about what do we need to change on this car if we do get a late race caution so we say four seconds four and a half seconds lead let's look at what that looks like back to byron harvick amarola chastain there's your leader right there coming off of turn four there's byron harvick and there's chastain in fifth that's how far he got he has to go he's about to link of the back straight away running faster laps hey so on the left side i just i know we keep talking about larson but look it's a group of drivers look at all of these 63s right here so i know larson's let's fight for the win let's talk about harvick how important the day is for him almarola having such a nice run kurt busch trying to make something happen bell recovering from that loose wheel that rolled across pit road you know jeff we we talk about you know larson because the winner is obviously the big story here but any of these good runs inside the top ten can go away with mismanaged fuel and not kneeling up and saving well look at these two cars right here they are 17th and 18th in points and and whoa oh gosh that was almost ricky said i want to get uh up there in front of you i mean we're almost gonna have a caution here [Music] i just don't see it going all the way green we've had too many issues with cars problems flat tires and things of that nature and i just don't know that these cars can take it the temperature they're seeing in the brakes has got to be you've got to be getting to the crossover point somebody is going to push it a little bit too far so i just got a notepad out if i'm on pit road and i handed a note to my tire guy and i'm giving him 15 to go air pressure we're going to go up a couple pounds all the way around 10 to go air pressure go up a couple more pounds right that plan is already being instituted every single race because he needs to be ahead you know it takes a little time to get the air air pumped up at the tires because i'm with you junior my gut tells me that why all of a sudden can we run green we haven't been able to do it all day you have to be ready oh contact stenhouse junior up into the one of kurt bush look like they might have touched but it was really close maybe not stenhouse trying to get by that one car on the inside and curt fighting hard to keep that six spot it's a good run for kurt they haven't had too good a year here it is yeah definitely some contact there rick lettering off of the right front of ricky stenhouse jr how aggressive does he get now well you have to one or two with you know both of these guys have a good days from a point stand you know from a point standpoint from here give you kurt bush you almost just give this spot up like stenhouse has put me in a bad spot a couple of times is it better just to get this spot up and over one point right i understand you want to race for every position but this has been a big day for kurt bush so many better decisions have made way up here in the tv booth oh yeah hey listen i'm over 50 and i'm watching now a lot easier let's get a few more updates as we have 13 to go marty and what a run for kevin harvick and his race team they're sitting in the fourth position right now actually sitting in the third position right now rodney children's just told him a moment ago you're good to go on fuel and we talked about a moment ago stuart haas racing needing a run like this harvick told me this is a racetrack where we have to take advantage of it and they're doing it today they haven't had a top five since kansas earlier this year it would be a much needed finish if harvick can finish here kelly danny hamlin running in the tenth position he just doesn't feel like he's had the race car to compete much throughout today at times saying i'm giving it all i can i've got nothing for these guys well he also may not have enough fuel in fact his crew chief chris hart many many laps ago very decidedly told him we cannot make it on fuel and i can see his pit crew sort of readied at the wall so we are expecting at some point here for denny hamlin to give up his strike position because he's gonna have to come in and top off with some fuel look at this kurt busch back to the inside of ricky stenhouse jr kurt entered the corner really low real shallow that will probably really hurt his ex's speed but it doesn't sit house got way up the racetrack [Music] just this is the type of day you know marty reported earlier in the year or earlier in the day 47 started this year with the mentality of just run where the car belongs keep equipment and then the last six or eight weeks they got off that had a couple accidents right they kind of refocused and it's showing not only are they running where the car belongs but they brought a car that belongs in the top ten it's a great combination for the 47. jeff staying up to fourth harvick running in third now chastain closing that gap he can run down the back straight away on this four car lap car ahead for chastain is going to take his air away of course he's way up the track chastain can see second place i mean there's a william byrne oh hard ran a little low there and slow off the corner and that's going to give chastain the chance here we got a carpet road junior that's you know that's frustrating when larson is the fastest guy here and he can make it on gas and you can't that's like the double whammy right by kevin harvick so chastain up to third just a few car leagues behind the 24 of william byron under 10 laps to go nine to go now the lead five and a half seconds for kyle larson you know the last time the cup series raced at nashville the hindering motorsports number five car was driven by jeff beaudine he won that day he started from fifth larson today started from fifth in the five car chastain moving in on this 24-24 byron's going to let him go byron must think he's still in fuel conservation mode not going to defend that position jeff they've told william to have his finger ready on that fuel switch not to go to it yet but he's got to be ready to hit it we're just gonna barely make it so fuel switch guys basically there's two pickups in the fuel tank one's almost like a reserve the way they have it plumbed so you run when that thing misses you flip it over it goes to the reserve track this size i'm guessing one you might try to get two laps to finish the race uh but that is kind of your fail-safe if calculations are wrong you'll know before but what a fit i mean i don't think we could talk enough about this young man right average finish outside the top 15 18.4 currently second and continues this streak three top tens this year but two have come in the last two races so continuing to move it forward he's still 5.6 seconds back from kyle larson but running strong running hard trying to well actually hoping that the five doesn't make it on fuel what a run kyle larson is having in 2021 remember the last five finishes for him points races second second second first first for kyle larson and you left out the million dollars his stats are so good you can just leave that million out that the guy won at the all-star race it's it's um you know we talk a lot because the equipment he drives in but today the 24 is up there but it isn't a hendrick dominated race it's a kyle larson dominated race well kyle larson has made hendrick motorsports better he's made every other driver have to step their game up i mean he came in into the team that had the defending champion and he's making chase elliot step his game up as the other drivers are too as a teammate you don't like to get beaten by it but you have to have confidence you can learn what he's doing learn how to combat it and go and take the fight to him marty hey jeff you talk about those three second place finishes i was talking to cliff daniels about that and he said he was kind of moping around the shop after one of those second place finishes he was and kyle came up to him said you okay he said yeah i just don't want to finish second i didn't come here to finish second i came to win races that level of accountability kyle larson maybe has never had it in his career they expect to win on the five team they're showing the speed they have in the race cars and kyle larson after being out for much of last year is delivering behind the wheel another impressive run here when i asked for kendrick i said you know you changed your philosophy none of your drivers used to race out of the cup series they were always just focused on the cup series run there all the time i said rick why have you changed that with kyle larson he said he has such a passion for racing he wants to go and learn and race and figure out a car and how it runs best he said i couldn't deny him that and he said also chase elliott likes to do it as well jay sally also will go away and run a late model and like to learn that but he said this kid really loves and what do you see look at kurt bush is possibly running out of gas the 11 cars on pit road didn't hamlet kurt busch having such a good day can he make it another just a couple laps coming up now one left to go presented by credit one bank for kyle larson 263 laps led already this has got to be the most dominant performance we've seen out of kyle larson [Music] fuel was an issue overheating was an issue he fixed the overheating problem he has managed the fuel problem and he's going to make it three wins in a row kyle larson returns to nashville super speedway a winner good job man so proud of this team so thankful for valvoline thank you guys so much for coming on board chevrolet hendrick motorsports mr h everybody great job kyle great job tyler big crew guys at the shop great job for bush running out of gas there hell the team held a car good job again guys did a good job saving that gas a lot of guys struggling to get to the finish of this race and kurt busch ran out was able to make it back around finished seventh great job for ross chastain there you saw the 42 coming inside [Applause] william byron in third eric almarola with a great top five finish today stenhouse in six juarez and have to be very excited about daniel suarez that seventh place finish a top ten finish for daniel checkered flag moment brought to you by advanced auto parts he's getting good at give burnouts fans a show and remember this is three points paying braces that he has won in a row steve you mentioned you throw in that million-dollar all-star race as well that's four races in a row for kyle larson he went all the way down right straight away doing a burnout for all the fans and you know this is the first cup series race pretty amazing 37 years since the cup series has raced here and the five of hendrik motorsports won the last time they were here and today and he takes valvoline to victory lane a sponsor who's been involved in the sport for a very long time familiar colors [Applause] just telling you the longevity of rick motorsports what they were able to do that story with jeff bodine winning at martinsville when rick didn't even think he was going to continue on and now hendrick motorsports the winningest team in the cup series [Applause] ready what a performance in front of a sellout crowd for kyle larson statistically the most dominant race he's had this year and i bet he wishes every race was on father's day he's now won back to back 2017 and 2021 so sats say it's the most dominant did it feel the most dominant behind the wheel it was uh yeah it was a great day we never really had to you know run behind people so i don't know when my teammates got out front again it would have been probably hard to pass them but valvoline chevrolet was really good it could cut the corner cut the middle of the corner really well and our picker did an awesome job again that number one pit stall helps a bunch too and um this crowd is awesome this is uh i love that you did a burnout for the entire crowd from from the one end of the grandstand to the other yeah i was gonna do something here and then yeah i looked down there i was like man there's a lot of fans down there too i need to go to the end but uh we had enough rubber and enough fuel left over to do a good burn out there at the end but yeah i can't say enough about everybody hendrick motorsports uh
