hey folks and welcome to the truck king youtube channel today is an exciting day because a brand new toyota tundra doesn't come around very often and that's exactly what's sitting next to me this is the 2022 tundra and in this video we're going to show you all the features now it has been 14 years since we've seen a brand new tundra so the big question is was this one worth the wait [Applause] let's start this one with the powertrains and yes they're brand new and you might be a little bit sad there are no v8s in this new tundra there are two power plants available the three and a half liter twin turbo v6 that is putting out horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque now the big engine you want to know about is right here in this trd pro this is the iforce max it's also a three and a half liter twin turbo v6 but this has a hybrid setup attached to it an electric motor is sandwiched right on the front of the transmission total output here you're talking about 437 horsepower and a whopping 583 pound-feet of torque and all of it is sent through a 10 speed automatic transmission i'm popping in here to tell you a couple more details about the powertrain that we got from the toyota tundra's chief engineer mike sweers dad and i actually had the opportunity to speak with mike after we saw these trucks so he kind of answered some of our more specific questions so the two things on the powertrain i want to mention it is a 1.8 kilowatt hour battery pack that goes in to that iforce hybrid model and now you might be wondering what is the rear end axle ratio well mike wouldn't spit the number out he says that it has changed so it's not the 430 that it was before and he also told us there's only going to be one rear end axle ratio available that's something toyota has done with the tundra in the past rather than offering a bunch of choices like other brands toyota gives you one option oh yeah and we can't forget the tundra's new easter eggs under the hood r d in michigan born in texas now let's talk about this truck you're looking at and first let me tell you that the event we're at today these are the only two pre-production tundras in canada right now they only have two models for us to look at so this is all i have to show you the whole lineup will become more apparent soon and of course as soon as we can bring a tundra back to our test facility you know we will so stay tuned for that but for now let's talk about this trd pro because so much has changed here the first thing you're going to notice the styling right it's entirely different looking and let me start with the color this is called solar octane and it's only going to be available on the tundra trd pro for runners and tacomas they get that crazy lime green color but if you want this you have to get a tundra i think it's a pretty hot color i'm a fan for sure now the other thing i love right up here in the grill an integrated led light bar that is pretty cool especially for off-roaders to have that built right into your truck and not have to worry about bolting it on aftermarket and then one little detail i like these marker lights have tiny little trds in them that's pretty cool too toyota they really paid attention to the details on this truck you can tell so as we roll back down the side the trd pro is lifted compared to a stock tundra and it is a suspension lift which is nice you get this kind of cool it's almost carbon fiber camo looking material kind of wrapping the fenders which is cool and then wheels and tires that is a set of 18 inch bbs trd pro forged wheels and you're getting a set of falcon wild peak all terrains now we're here at the back end of this trd pro and there's a ton going on here underneath and here in the bed but we'll start with the bed one feature i'll show you right off the bat they've incorporated this little button here into the driver's side tail light to open up your tailgate that is kind of handy now the bed we have to talk about because this is a molded composite resin bed the same thing that's been in the tacoma for a number of years and it's just the inners here the rear quarter panels on the tundra are actually aluminum so are the doors and the hood so there's a mixed materials story going on here you have aluminum and then this composite and i love this because if it chips it doesn't matter it's never going to rust the biggest downside on this is it's very slippery when wet but i'm excited to test it out and see if that's still true now other features in the bed you are getting one d-ring in each one of the corners then there's movable tie-downs up higher there's dividers actually molded into the bed so you can use wood to create different configurations and led lighting back here plus still getting a 400 watt plug right up there in the corner so there's a ton going on with this bed and actually one other little thing that you won't see but toyota told us is that they redesigned the tailgate to make it a lot stronger because they were hearing that tailgates were getting bent when people were loading atvs and other machines into their trucks so this tailgate is strong now you can load as many atvs as you want and it should never bend finally we'll just look at the tailgate itself the trd pro used to be stamped on the quarter now it's stamped huge across the back so if you're following this truck on the highway you'll know exactly what it is one point to add to the box story here there is going to be a power retractable step that comes down from the corner of the tundra now we haven't actually seen one yet and toyota didn't supply me with the photo so i can't show you it yet but it sounds like a pretty neat innovation once again the idea here mike told us was that to get that step really low to the ground because the competitor steps you kind of get up quite high for them so this is a power step drops right down low so you're able to step up into the bed of the tundra what might be the biggest change to the tundra is going on back here in the rear end you might already see it there's no leaf springs in there this is a multi-link rear suspension now so just like what ram has done for years and what ford has done with the new raptor toyota has done here on the tundra and this is across the lineup you will not see leaf springs on this new tundra now one other thing i'll point out might be a little tricky to show you guys but in the rear end toyota actually took the frame right here in front of the wheels and they made it a little bit wider at the rear kind of splays out a little bit and they say that is going to help with towing stability and it's another one of those claims that i can't wait to put to the test two things to add to the suspension story first of all there is going to be optional air suspension on the new tundra but only in the rear end so you're only going to get two corner airbags now they're going to be manually adjustable so you can set them low normal or high and then of course when you drop a trailer or payload in the back they're going to automatically load level so like i mentioned those are going to be optional another optional suspension technology adaptive variable damping so the shocks will actually be able to change their damping forces on the fly one of the big takeaways i got after speaking with mike was that it was challenging to build this tundra because toyota went to him and said hey the new tundra has to share its platform with the land cruiser so now the frame that's under the tundra and the land cruiser are basically the same and one of the big differences is the old tundra used an open c in the rear end whereas this tundra is a fully boxed steel frame because that's what the land cruiser needs now going fully boxed makes the frame much stiffer that has its pros and cons but that's the reason why so much work went into the suspension at least according to mike going fully boxed made the ride rigid so then they needed the coil springs and the air and the adjustable damping to be able to really give you the smooth ride that customers expect and of course the rigidity also helps with towing and help to boost the toe numbers when we do tundra videos easily one of the most popular features we hear at least about in the comments is the rear window and the fact that it rolls all the way down and don't you worry tundra faithful this window still does it on the new truck just like everything underneath the truck everything inside is brand new and you know what we'll go ahead and start her up for you so this is the trd pro with that iforce max hybrid engine and the first thing i'm going to show you inside here are all the cool off-road features maybe the most important one is the switch right up here that is a real rear locking differential which is a big deal because the trd pro did not have one before now down in the center here i get a drive mode button self-explanatory i also get multi-terrain select and i get crawl control here in the tundra trd pro so those are some really cool off-road features now another thing which is interesting there's a tow haul mode nothing new about that but toyota has actually designed a two-stage tow haul so stage one for lighter trailers and two for heavier trailers that's again a really interesting idea now you know just looking at everything in front of me here what do i have in the center that's a 14 inch touchscreen you know it's massive totally keeping up with what everyone else has these days and one little thing i noticed right off the bat i love how these air vents are almost incorporated into the screen looks pretty cool then right in front of me this is a 12.3 inch digital gauge cluster please don't mind the check engine light this is a pre-production vehicle so you know it's going to have a light on but hopefully that'll be the only time there's a check engine light on in a tundra so i mean i guess let me just give you the broad strokes here this this interior is absolutely up to par with everything else with everything else that's on the market it has all the latest cutting edge technology and i feel like i'm in a current half done but you know what there's actually two different interiors in the tundra and we have another example right over there so let me go show you that truck now and you'll see the other setup now here is the other interior style on the tundra the truck you're looking at right here is a trd off road so this truck gets an eight inch touchscreen and still gets analog gauges with just a small little screen up here in front of the driver so you know it depends what trim you get the lower trim tundras are going to look like this and then the higher trim tundras are going to have all that tech that you saw on the trd pro but let me just mention a couple other things while i'm in here this is the trd off-road you still have that locker still have crawl control still have multi-terrain select that is pretty cool another thing which is interesting is this seat here in the off-road it's manual toyota has actually increased the travel by 24 now i'm six foot two all the way back yeah it feels pretty comfortable what's blowing my mind is how close i can get to the steering wheel this is for really short people but you know what it's just always nice when they make modifications to make sure any body size will be able to drive this truck another technology that has been added to the tundra is trailer reverse guidance now unlike the other brands that use a knob up on the dash to you know turn your trailer toyota has decided when you turn on trailer reverse guidance you can take your hands off the wheel and that truck and trailer will back in a dead straight line so the idea here is if you get to the boat launch all you got to do is line up your truck and trailer straight with the boat launch behind you take your hands off the wheel and that truck will go perfectly back in a straight line by itself again it's a different philosophy than what the other brands have gone with for their trailer reverse guidance in a way it's simpler but it sounds like a neat system and i'm excited to test it out another big change that has come to the tundra it has moved from hydraulic to electric power steering and that allows it to get toyota safety sense 2.5 as standard equipment across the lineup that means every single tundra is going to come with pre-collision with pedestrian detection adaptive cruise control automatic high beams a rear seat reminder a blind spot monitor and rear crush traffic alert and for the towing crowd it's important to note that this new generation of tundra example the crewmax that's here right beside me now comes with a six and a half foot bed more importantly you can order it with that you're not stuck with just the five and a half foot bed now along with that note this wheel base so this has the potential to be a tremendous tow vehicle particularly because toyota has gone out of their way to create a splayed frame in the rear to better support loads they even put trucks with trailers into the wind tunnel to get a better idea of how the aerodynamics works so what are the new numbers up to 12 000 pounds of towing and a max 1940 payload and those are very competitive and they're decent numbers this should be a good one and finally this 2022 tundra is going to be on sale by the end of this year and pricing will be announced closer to its official launch so everybody as you can tell this has been a really big day for steve and i we've been waiting a very very long time for this tundra not to mention we're intimately acquainted with these having them driven all the way up through labrador and back and who knows maybe we can talk toyota into letting us do that again but for right now that's it for today but this is just a taste folks because we will be getting our own trucks to test in our own unique way so we're going to be putting out more videos as time goes by so that's it but before you leave please go below hit like hit subscribe and hit join become part of our channel and pass
