it is so good to be back with you finally today we are fulfilling a promise in this episode that we gave you last time which was clear weeks ago at the beginning of the summer when we said our very next episode would be on how to make your own DIY but very effective natural bug repellent so that's what we're gonna do today but stay with us after the recipe is shared because we're gonna talk about several different scenarios and some ways that you might be able to make it easy on yourself don't go away before we get into that recipe I want to just present you three short scenarios so you kind of know where we're going with this video of course there's the chance that when you're at home in your own backyard you might live in an area like I do that is rife with chiggers and ticks and mosquitoes and this summer it has been particularly obnoxious so if that happens to be you imagine that scenario with me and we're gonna have a remedy for it the second scenario would be like your get home bag that you hopefully have one for each member of the family it might look like a little every day carry pack that they have right on them at work so that if by chance something happened while you while your children were at school or you are at work or church you had to walk home and that may take you a whole day or even two full days if it's a few miles away from where you actually live that's the second scenario and the third scenario would be if you find yourself in the wild and you absolutely have nothing with you no everyday carry no get home bag you just are winging it out in the wild and you need to repel the bugs okay those are our three scenarios now let's start back at the beginning and talk about that first one if you find that you have access to everything in your house there are a few simple solutions that you can use just right out in your own yard a couple of them include these and you've heard them before but dryer sheets you can just tuck one of those in your back pocket and probably it's going to repel the bugs a little bit you've also heard of people using Avon Skin So Soft or you might have some sort of a bug repellent like repeal or DEET off-brand DEET there's also natural kinds this is a botanical version of that I will say that almost any of those that don't have deep in them already usually have quite a bit of chemicals so at least be aware of that also some folks like to treat different areas around their home with something like this or even their clothing a lot of hikers use this permethrin or pyrethrin those are two very strong bug repelling products that are excellent at what they do however they're really harsh on the environment and very difficult to get off of your skin and they're very hard on your skin so I can't really recommend them I would prefer that you went with something that was all-natural like this or what we're making today but if you're at home in your own yard you probably have some of that also if you happen to be entertaining people over at your home and you have access to things like this you can just put a few lemons out on the picnic table because mosquitoes hate anything citrus so if you live where you can get a hold of some citrus just slice some of that open have it laying out and that will repel them all so they don't like they do like standing water so get rid of standing water that might be out in mud puddles or a pond that doesn't have a fountain in it or something like that or you could plant some Lotus out of there in that kind of floats on the pond because they don't like the smell of Lotus blooms also if you have friends over for some sort of a barbecue and you have fans that you can turn on overhead that's going to help you because mosquitoes and chiggers do not like windy anything all right also in your own yard you can plant natural hedges I would just say all along your fence line go ahead and plant something like mint or spearmint or rosemary or thyme or geranium or citronella or lemongrass all of those different plants are going to just be excellent at repelling them all around the border of your home so if you can get some incorporated into the natural landscape you'll be thanking yourself later all right next scenario is your get home bag where you've got every family member equipped with some sort of little version of how to get home from wherever they find themselves if something went wrong and they had to get themselves home on foot now this is an excellent little idea this autumn Iser is a pen size and it actually unscrews or so once you've used up the repellent that comes in that from Walmart or wherever you buy this you can fill it with your own DIY version of this and also I'll just give you a hint anytime I go to a convention and I get a promotional version of those little oughta misers I save them because they're fantastic either for covert messages that you could slip inside of them or anything like your own hand sanitizer or your homemade bug repellent so hold on to those whenever you get a free one from any kind of a convention that you go at or at the dentist office when they're giving away little versions of that or you can come up with a small version that is like this the only thing about that is that can't be refilled it's aerosol it that one is has deed in it which I don't recommend so it's an option but it's probably not my first option for you all right and then the last scenario is when you're just playing out in the wild with absolutely nothing with you and you need to get the bugs off of you here are a couple of solutions and this is not the full list but if you can keep in mind all of these things that's going to help first of all if you happen to be out in a camp and you have had coffee save those coffee grounds and throw them down into the fire because those are going to be able to put off a smoke that is fantastic at repelling all through the night any kind of mosquitoes or chiggers or ticks that come around now do keep in mind that those you don't want them to burn up you actually it's good if there have a little bit of moisture left in them from your coffee because you want them to just give off the steam and smoke that's what's effective not just burning them in the fire like a some people make fire logs and stuff out of dry coffee grounds that's not going to be as effective as the smoke also if you know how to identify sassafras if you have some in your area sassafras root I just brought this tea concentrate of sassafras extract just to remind myself and I actually could wipe this sassafras tea on me and it would be just as effective but if you know how to identify it out in the wild and get some sassafras root growing around you that's going to help you alright what if you have to make your own though and you want to use it as naturally as possible you've got a couple of options and I'm just gonna make it simple and tell you first off what my favorite recipe is to use but then we're going to talk about some of these others so when I'm talking about my favorite first of all I'm going to suggest that you get some sort of a little 4 ounce spray bottle it could be clearer it could be dark blue it could be dark brown you've seen them all kinds of ways but get yourself some sort of little 4 ounce spray bottle where the top can unscrew because you're gonna fill it up now these are the ingredients you're going to put in that bottle first of all fill it halfway up which is approximately 2 ounces full of distilled water and if by chance you don't have distilled water yes you could just use freshly boiled water or if you have good well water you could use that as a backup but for most of us the distilled water is going to be the very best bet get yourself some distilled water and fill it halfway up so 2 ounces worth next you're going to fill it with the other two ingredients and this is very simple for me my favorite is to use wintergreen isopropyl alcohol and the reason is because like I said earlier wintergreen is a perfect repellent already and the alcohol in here is going to very slowly evaporate so when you spray this on your skin or your clothing it's going to evaporate a little bit more slowly and be fantastic at kind of being a double whammy so I'm going to put 2 ounces in there of that and then I'm going to put 30 drops of my favorite essential oils generally that's going to be something like sweet orange oil and either clove or one of these peppermint or wintergreen oils because those are going to be so effective like I said before also I was kind of chuckling at myself earlier today before we made this episode and I was thinking and another honest reason if I'm being very honest is that so often times I don't put any bug repellent on until I've already gotten bitten once or twice and so this wintergreen isopropyl alcohol is perfect and the peppermint oil that I might put in it is perfect for taking the itch out of the bites I've already gotten before I put on my repellent so that's kind of why I like this recipe again simply distilled water some wintergreen alcohol isopropyl alcohol and then about 30 drops of whatever I have on hand of some sort of wild orange or sweet orange oil and the clove and the wintergreen or peppermint oils okay but now let me talk you through a couple of other options you have a lot of folks like to make this same exact recipe with just a few tweaks and I want you to know that if you don't have isopropyl alcohol but you have one of these others you can do it just fine so remember two ounces of water the cleanest purest water you've got and then you could put aloe vera juice in it the reason I don't care for it is this is gonna be really good for your skin but it does kind of feel just a little bit sticky to me and I don't like going out in the hot weather repelling the mosquitoes effectively but with a little bit of stickiness to my skin but it is very good for your skin so keep that in mind another option is vinegar here's some of our homemade vinegar that I've made and it's very effective but again it does smell a little vinegary on your skin I will tell you that also another option is witch hazel and I will say that it is very effective and it has some alcohol in it witch hazel has a very low content of alcohol it can be very effective as well so that would probably be my second choice some folks even like to use hydrogen peroxide and it can be effective I just know that on my skin and hair and even on my clothing if I'm out in the Sun for a long time it can tend to have some bit of lightening of my skin or hair or clothing that it's on so just be careful with that also vodka is another option and I don't have it displayed here but it has that high alcohol content so it's excellent at anybody that makes their own personal extracts or perfumes often likes to use vodka because it has this very slow release into the air so it lasts on your skin or clothing a long time and so it can be very effective in this spray as well for that base again you're always going to use two ounces of this then you're going to use two ounces of would share of your favorite additive is that I've just mentioned of those and then about 30 drops give or take of your favorite essential oils and you can use anything from tea tree oil clove oils and peppermint oils those are very effective thyme oil is exceptionally effective wintergreen there are many things I haven't even mentioned and I would love for you if you have interest in this topic go back and watch our last video that we put out that was how to keep from being eaten alive out in the wilderness because there are quite a few tips that I share on that video but then you guys came out so awesomely and gave your favorite tips I can't even begin to regurgitate all of them here so if you want to see what other people have written of what they've used it is so much fun to see what everyone else has done and very helpful everything from rubbing yourself down with garlic or or taking garlic tablets those that can be effective wearing the little bracelets that have the citronella in them or burning the citronella incense like you see I have here hydrocortisone cream is the at taking out fantastically any kind of itch that you might experience and then I'll say this if I'm out in the wild and I don't have anything with me and I do get bitten just find some wild plantain and get it in your hand and just squish it up real good so that it's gotten all decimated and kind of juicy feeling and then smear that right on that bug bite and it will be amazingly effective at taking out the itch add to this video comment below with what your favorite DIY version of bug repellent is because we can all learn from each other and there's so much that we can learn keep in mind this that bugs are especially drawn to strong smelling breath and sweat and you may not smell yourself but if there's a chance you're out in the wilderness and find that you have rather strong smelling breath or may just put in a mint because that's going to help a lot and also if you are using deodorant peppermint is an excellent option if you're planning to go hiking or being outside where you might get a little bit exposed to some bugs the bite all right now it's your turn comment below if you haven't done it already will you take the time to share this video with somebody that you love and hit the like button and the bell and whatever else there is available to you down below we love hearing from you and we'll look forward to seeing you next time until then God bless you and go out and be a blessing to someone today [Music] hey there before you go I would love to share a quick word of Scripture with you this is out of the Holy Bible in the book of John and it's chapter 15 verses 9 through 11 and these are the actual words of Jesus Christ speaking he says this as the father has loved me so I have loved you now abide in my love if you will keep my Commandments you will abide in my love just as I have kept the father's Commandments and abide in his love these things I've spoken to you that you're that my joy would be in you and that your joy would be full isn't that wonderful now go spread the word [Music]
