hello Chagas or Cheung stirs I don't know I feel like is it too soon to come up with a collective now and forever all that's watching this regardless I felt like today I was going to run you through my exercise routine because even though I don't look like it sometimes I work out and definitely when I lived in New York I always came to see Mary Helen Bauer's owner of ballet beautiful and she made sure that I looked elegant and poised so we're going to go on a journey together however first we're going to get there follow me hello beautiful is on the fifth floor of a five-floor walk-up which I like to think is actually half the exercise this is by the way not what I always enjoyed doing on a hangover still not that either burning to see you oh my god coming Arnett look at the way you even just stand Vic Ulis [Music] okay so Mary hello one of the things that first attracted me to coming here and doing ballet with you was how beautiful you looked in ballet gear and the fact that when I was like 5 years old I wanted to be a ballerina so I think ballet outfits are actually very important for me that's like 50% of what I like about the six venom um I'm so sorry fifty fifty percent so can you help me pick a look for today's class yes so what do you think you want to go with the traditional Alexa look well that to me that's the camisole okay edgy of your cutoff shorts here we need that we need the ribbon the shoes slung around the neck right it does the mare legs there's been various incarnations of my bad I look and also because I used to walk here and then walk out of the class I used to put your ballet slippers around my neck so that I could show dudes on the street that I was in fact a ballerina so if you've ever actually seen a picture of me and this is very vain if you've ever actually seen a picture of me walking around Manhattan I think will find that I'm wearing ballet city chic and for not white and I'm sure only trying to pick up babes I met you like just with the with the cut-offs okay from ballet club and the cami oh yeah just what this my exercise good cuz I can lift my leg high except I can't it's all a fallacy this is the sporty-er style so we have sort of classic ballerina silhouettes yeah the camisole this one looks great on you this that this is the pinch front it has the princess seams the classic scenes that run down the bus yeah this has the low back it's nice so you know you can you can add a bra if you want to most dancers don't and it's usually pretty bare doesn't I'll show you see you wiggle tight over me over this is the sign of the professional versus when your child or in like the ballet academy you have to wear even on stage you have to wear your tights under underneath your tutu underneath your leotard and then you would wear a belt or skirt or you know your costume on tap but why do you wear the moon because this is just how you do it when you're rehearsing not sure why but that's how it's done okay well I wouldn't like so this this we can achieve and this is the classic ballet tight right see the seam runs as we sew from the the toe all the way up to the waist so it goes all the way up mainly I won't go bump so it's just hope that we can do too well there's so many different things to choose from I feel like there can be a montage women here [Music] [Music] firstly I'm in my outfit I obviously can't be so cute this is the looked when can you help me put my shoes on because often when I post real classes I get a lot of cross ballerinas on my Instagram telling me there's some very grumpy people in the ballet world online here's the way I see the shoes you can have your proper like you're going on stage you're going to the Royal Academy for an exam way of tying your ribbons and they'll teach you how to do it and then there's the have fun it's about fashion it's just a workout let me back sway which you obviously are the Perret but let's start by you want to this is an elasticized drawstring right which is nice so you can just tighten it to the place that feels good yeah if you're going on stage you would basically not it cut it and tuck the ties inside if you want to leave that I feel like I'm not in danger of going onstage anytime soon so this to me is more of the typical Alexa way but what you just did is good however it is quite it's a little bulky so if it bothers you don't hesitate to knot it like I said and cut it off okay that looks great and then okay the ribbon this is the real tab this is how I like number one you have to start this starting is wrong because you need to be you have to flex your foot so that your angle is that it's like sort of thickest okay because you've got to have a little bit of give in the ribbon you don't want to go all the way tight and this flexing is correcting it okay so you want to flex now you don't sit okay no usually you do this one I'll do this one go ahead very cute I love it and it's gonna finish with a floppy bow so chic so beautiful alright so for this if we were doing the on stage look start with the interior ribbon come around the ankle this is a hard decision are we going to tie it in the back are we gonna tie it here I tied mine on the it's quite long let's do it in the backs of it a little bit tighter okay okay and then I'm gonna bring the other ribbon around you want this to be nice and clean looks good right yeah it looks better than that one well they're both nice through just a little bit different and then it's a little bit tight but I'm going to tie it in the back little baby not you still going to get this out tuck it then I'm going to pull it out just a bit because I want you to have a little bit again than me yeah exactly so it's not you know cutting off your circulation tuck it under so you're hiding the knot if you would going saige no you would stitch in and then you have to cut out after so your ribbons don't flop around right this is one reason this is another reason why I'm not a ballerina not enough this is this is only for the professional setting but it doesn't matter we're just exercising okay it's really all about having fun so today I thought we could share with everyone some kind of exercise routine where we focus on the things that I always wanted to work on sure which is bum always when I'm lifting bottom lifting your air daddy yeah Tom yes and sort of alms for your audience at home this is a workout that's inspired by ballet mm-hmm it's not an actual ballet class so that's fellow beautiful this is that ballet beautiful is intense burn but elegantly and under the guise of ballet essentially you're wearing beautiful outfits but you're doing quite hard things and you're gonna have a you know like a super toned ladylike physique at the end of this okay great all right so stretching right we always have to as a dancer you're always looking to elongate you want to lengthen so if you think about so we'll just start really easy I mean over ideas ridiculous okay so just we're gonna stab really easily nice and easy you don't have to be with flexibility you just want to move through it it's gonna feel different every day does this fall down as I can good that's great you don't have to be so for technical the hips don't have to be square I really think that stretching should just feel good it's about just lengthening the body yes Express opening up the hip and the thigh this one's really nice we're doing that right you can come on your side just leaning down exactly stretch stretch stretch good okay shall we start with ABS yeah the other good thing about ballet beautiful is if you're hungover I know too well about being away but she does the other good thing about ballet beautiful is if you're fatigued you can do better exercise and then in between you can just sort of like will stay on the mat because that's sort of your sweet spot okay in ballet you're always pulling your stomach in you're always engaging your core so it's just a given I like to start the workout with ABS so that we get those muscles tight I just had quite a lot of who named me for lunch that's that's standard for you great so we're just gonna connect with your ballet muscles and then we're gonna use them through all the other exercises so come on down we're gonna start down here all right I'm really thin but I still eat sorry destroys how annoying it was like I just have so much shoveling me but I'm genuinely did I believe you let halloumi it's true all right pull this some again we're gonna take the feet up I'm trying to think about wrapping all this from like the sides of my hip hips to my belly button pushing everything that flat on the ground and then we're gonna extend slightly stretch one leg down how's your back feeling good good and pulling in here oh that's great it looks elegant it's like house lift up and change take your arms up to first I'm gonna come over and give you some adjusted minutes to make it harder a good one for a little more warm lift and change left unchanged good so can you share with us some of the a little faster like who are some people that walk through this door that people at home might know well one of my first clients was Natalie Portman who we prepared for Black Swan casual and I've worked for many years with Karen Elson oh yeah no and laughs yeah Lily Aldridge Doutzen Liv Tyler think your muscles feel like lemon tuna we're gonna pull this time again and just take the toes a little bit of gold huh good trying to take this okay now we're going to tap the toes down and lift the toes up good sit down yep the further away exactly the harder it is so this is where sometimes I have you hold that ball oh yeah in between yeah yeah why don't we put this on yes sure I don't know let's just experiment here I feel like we can add more burn to buzz right now buds perfect how does that feel yeah really cool oh you top here and lift for eight top it and up pulling in good and - how was that horrible and three where are you getting it any other way oh great it's really you don't mind being my guinea pig on two more nine ten and then just hold the feet here okay okay great nice for the stomach in this position because it gives you a little bit of resistance yeah okay oh what'd you do it for a bit how about that okay good lying down six seven eight and ten so you know I went I ain't okay you're gonna lift up oh yeah like this okay the arm side and then pulling it and up great I'm lower aren't you great a lower aqua oh yeah I'm the only person that comes in here and making four grunting laughs I don't know it's like that's perfect how the flowers oh I've got a whiskey I know we're at a point to prove okay one more eight usually make you do at least twelve of these so I'm going easy hold it back and you're gonna pulse back and pulse and two and three counties and four in low on the right so you're thinking about that spot between your head back oh why am i doing it looking at you everything worked out for like three months so I forgot how hard it is oh yeah yes yeah okay Larry lay down and we're gonna do it with the twist lift up and twist good and lower and lift and it's changed wait exactly so really suck in as you come up and up okay tell them about your serial ballet and face and aging and lower Wow because you look 12 thank you it's all about power and you're actually 18 so that's well okay twisting so my theory is all the pounding all the stress bad for your body hold it here and we're just gonna pulse it back bad for your skin high impact exercise breaks down here collagen hurts your joints bad for the face I know but some people like to do cardio and now should I invest doesn't have to you we have a low impact cardio Oh something yeah probably beautiful oh I want to try it I'm so whole lift up and change lift up and change okay okay so we're just gonna do a little release of the heads just roll forward up and just exactly what you're doing we're just a couple of twins with the same physicality just mirroring blue eyes brown eyes all right so let's move on would you like to use this likely been really nice these bug these are great you can travel with them they weigh nothing it adds a resistance yep which is essentially burn okay so you know I love that so what are we using them for now I'm gonna do it for outer thigh love okay okay I think it's so important to take as much time as you can for yourself and for your health well I like these a 10 you know the whole thing of this was meditative in a way like walking here walking up the stairs getting bigger outfit on there's a ceremony attached to going to some kind of exercise class whatever that might be which is actually just really nice for your brain yes and you always feel better when you move your body yeah it's one of the like small ways we can kind of control you know how we feel yeah and our day house is feeling terrific okay great so you're starting to get that burn salting and lift it higher up and - so we're working think about pulling that stomach end tight so for me that takes a lot more thought and effort after the three kids oh but just always trying to get that connection through the core so this is just really targeted exercise it's high it looks like exactly targeted targeted toning stretch it long we're doing some feelings right now we are circling I mean as best we can and again trying to engage right so you're pulling in engaged how to do me good terrific I mean it feels so painful I know it looks like we're doing almost nothing it's sort of yeah it's really hard - does it look like nothing feels like it's like I think I want you to put the band on Sundays and just my visas where to go this fire lifts a fire I'm gonna come and left you thank you when you laugh it okay what are we doing oh I just want exactly so that you're stretching the band work this is one easy stretch here you can just come onto your back you probably need to move this down then but if you do I love it right it's really nice I wish in a way you can do the seated at your desk chair yeah come on down and then same thing you want to pull this so I get nice and tight now to push up with the hips right tummy and do not arch your back just lower and lift and squeeze the butt squeeze under here as you come on so up this is the one that looks naughty and for very effective tell me yeah okay do you prefer not to film this I just wouldn't love a percentage of audience of 13 year old males to go up by 90% so like let's do this [Laughter] okay kind of like a little higher oh my god ma you're gonna send them crazy crazy just then we'll just show you them what would happen okay if you really want to get through the outside of the thighs and the but then you can do a little opening and closing right it's opening it tight good that's good so if you can imagine that any given day there is about 20 women up here in leotards doing this thing together that's what's good and a handful of supermodels yeah bring the feet together we're just gonna advance into the harder stuff yep lift one leg up stomach in tight you know what bring your knees together it's harder it's gonna be like quite a lot harder and down and up here horrific domina so you really feel this burn in the working leg yep through the butt so this one is so good for lifting and tightening yeah all of it I thought I could interview while doing this by car is actually impossible okay and a little pulse good should we change legs not yet okay now hold it here I'm gonna tap down and up that's really nice and to the or effective really nice a my dear pain huh he's like that's so nice that is really hurting I think I've lost circulation in my butt lift it up it's really beautiful and for five just two sets of eight here and I think there were just stretch stand up and we'll do our Swan arms I only see my phone right now let's stretch if we were really going for it I would have made you do tours of me thank you okay so just release whatever feels good how about swings good very pretty stretch the bottom leg down lower all right lower it to the lap great change side hello can move it around okay shall we get one ours yep long through the neck mm-hmm like a swan this is in your regular life always we do want to have lots of links from here okay open through the chest so I'm thinking about pulling you never want the shoulders to kind of roll for it which happens in modern life your phone computer stress driving the train whatever it is right so you just want to be open always fighting that thinking about I try to think about my shoulders like a coat hanger straight across everything open mmm pulling it so exactly like somebody's pulling in right here in between your shoulder blades yeah and just getting a little pinch that looks great and you want to engage the core right so for for ballet the hips are really really straight but for a normal person it probably feels a little bit tucked to be that straight open down closed yeah closing to it all right let's watch this is one pound okay Wow whoa I don't think one right we're getting we're getting really intense over here but joke about it it makes it so much harder okay because Swan arms we're going to be using our body's natural resistance bend the elbows lift the elbows Bend these are really nice you have to practice them this summer these make your holiday another one looks so happy and beautiful because I feel like a battery yes and it does make you look youthful and young when you're smiling and so happy yeah you look great okay so down and up I mean it's gonna take a couple of reps but you'll be crying if we did 15 minutes of this okay I don't even think we could do 15 minutes with one pound we can probably do half of that this is what you're planning to do right now it already hurts I'm just letting you know okay that's great I'm happy to hear that little circles here long through the neck nice right these will never make a big they're not gonna make you bulky it's a very toned but feminine arm now we can talk a little about posture yes these are great for your posture because you're in that open position mm-hmm so we keep going do not don't drop your arms note do not drop your arms okay don't arch I get a little bit shaky through my body do you feel that just from working all those muscles I'm just boiling water because like yeah okay down and up yes generally we I don't think about it but it's usually best to take off the sweater before the arms because you're hotter you don't want to like intimidate everyone with all muscular guns okay so you can practice these in the water no water yes on your holiday okay the low ones especially are a great way like I did that with Natalie when we were prepping for Black Swan because it gives you that resistance so our Swan arm exercises are like foundational ballet beautifully you can do that anywhere you don't need the weights you know it's an amazing transformative exercise it's super elegant yeah and it's giving you tone Austria also beautiful posture yup okay and two and three beautiful very elegant even though that this is where it gets hard right you're tired you don't want to lose your form okay okay so keep just pushing through it good let's do
