[Music] Future's now old man hey everyone so today we're going to be taking a look at alen wake 2 running on pretty much all the handhelds or all the handhelds that would have a hope in Hell of running it uh now it was released on Friday October 27th uh today is the 28th so I'm doing the testing after now if you take a look at the system requirements for the GPU it looks pretty uh Grim honestly cuz the minimum requirement is an RTX 2060 or an RX 6600 uh the maximum obviously being like a 480 4090 but the CPU side of things you only need about a 3700x I believe they call for across the board that's from minimum to maximum like 4K Ultra whatever which is surprising even with rate tracing everything so that's a very welcome kind of changed cuz usually rate tracing and everything is a big CPU hog and does require like a higher end one so we'll also be talking about the new drivers that were released for the Asus Rog Ally released on the 27th as well kind of later in the day kind of early evening I believe they were released so I did do some testing of the previous drivers that were available and then I tested the 7840 U drivers that were available on the srg Ally running the Z1 extreme and then I retested everything running the newest drivers that came out on the 27th and I tested on all that today as well we'll be touching on performance with the XG mobiles running on the Asus RG Ali so that would be the RTX 380 R RX 6850 on AMD now performance on Old devices we'll touch on all that but honestly I wouldn't really recommend it on the isus r heli to be honest with you if that's your only device to play it I I wouldn't recommend it maybe if you can get it on sale maybe when driver upd they tapen who knows but in this current State I really wouldn't recommend that as my only place to play I would wait to get a better experience now with that being said it is playable now uh we'll so again we'll touch on performance and everything we'll touch on the wattage on the Asus G Ali when you're running the XG Mobile on 20 watts versus 30 Watts uh and then also we will talk about the steam deck performance or lack thereof near the end of the video and then kind of wrap everything up for systems used we have the Asus RG Ally obviously with the zed1 extreme and that's running 16 GB of physical RAM now that physical RAM is clocked at 6,400 megat transfers per second and it is set to Auto uh vram for the vram allocation in the Armory crate this is a must to be able to play alen Wake On or Allen wake 2 Sor on the RG Ally or any other 16 GB device without a dedicated graphics card otherwise the game will not launch you'll get an error saying hey you need physical whatever 16 GB of RAM blah blah blah it will not let let you bypass it whatever now if you set it to Auto on the E sarg Ally you will then get an error launching the game saying hey you need 6 GB of vram but it'll let you play it'll say expect bugs whatever inconsistent performance blah blah blah blah so what's going to happen is you're going to use up all of your 16 GB of physical RAM and that's going to be dedicated to the physical RAM in the game and then the GPU in the game as well and then it's going to be basically fighting for each other like for for usage of that 16 G of RAM and then there's something called page file so that page file is a space or reserve space on the hard drive that the ram can basically access as additional kind of ram space now it's going to be much slower than actual Ram so typically uh what will happen is either applications in the background that you're not being that are not being used or haven't been used in a while that might automatically get stored to your page file memory anyway uh but uh it will kind of recall it and be able to bring it back to to the current Ram now when you're doing this uh and you're maxing it out then it's just going to be fighting for it and then you're going to be dipping into the hard drive space and then it's you're playing a game though so it's it's more instantaneous it's not like oh okay like it'll be a little bit longer on a render or whatever but anyway so it's going to be dipping into that pretty much instantly and we're going to get worse performance therefore uh you'll see that when we compare the RG Ally to the gpd1 max 2 which the gpd1 max 2 is running 7840 U 64 4 GB of RAM total 16 GB of that is dedicated to vram however it is running at 6,400 megat transfers per second I didn't upgrade it to a faster Ram speed just so I could get the difference of ram speed or uh of ram capacity at the same speed now I also have the Inu a1s sorry 7840 U 32 GB of RAM 8 GB of vram dedicated uh 7500 megat transfers per second that this is running out though so we're going to see the difference of capacity and RAM speed as well now getting into drivers so the drivers were weird so originally like whenever I go to do one of these tests or anything I always double check drivers make sure it's all up to date blah blah blah whatever so yesterday I went and checked and the latest R Ally driver that I could find was released on October 5th which was ending in 804 now when you go to the website you can't find that anymore the oldest available uh driver that you can find on the RG Ali driver site is listed as 6004 and that was released on August 31st now this new update that was released on August 27th do34 this is listed to fix uh launch issues with Resident Evil uh Village as well as uh FC 2024 2023 uh the soccer game I'm not familiar with it but I know that was an issue so that's what it claims to fix in this there's no specific like update for saying yeah like all wake optimizations or anything like that now you can install the 7840 U drivers on the Asus Ali or the yeah the Asus Alli uh running the zed1 extreme so I'll show how to do that like just in the background here um I would recommend that if you do do this uh that you delete the AMD folder that thein file is located in uh before doing the install of the drivers it will error out but then you can go back into this folder and then that will be the only folder that you need knowing that that's the newest driver to force the updates and again I'll just be showing that in the background if you have any further questions feel free to hit me up in the comments and I'll help you out uh anyway so the GPD and the Ino are both running the latest 78 40u drivers for the 780m uh GPU R GPU and these were released on October 19th so this is not optimized for alw 2 at all either however we'll get a good comparison of like okay if the 78 40u drivers are any better on the r G comparatively so that will be something we'll kind of be looking into and then real quickly just before we kind of get into everything I just wanted to touch on wattage when you're using the XG mobile either 3080 or the 6850 on the r allly i don't have the 4090 to test but I assume it'll probably operate the same or relatively the same but anyway so wattage uh will only go from about 20 to 23 Watts sometimes even a little bit lower on the CPU and that's typically like even when you set it manually and your GPU limited so like that's basically what's happening is you're just going to be GPU Limited in this game so I set that manually through Armory crate and that's kind of what happened when using GH helper to force it to 30 wats or try to force it to 30 Watts it'll make the CPU run about 2 to 3 Watts higher but definitely not at or near 30 and it doesn't really seem to offer any sort of performance difference now I have noticed this in previous games or other kind of like GPU heavy games so that's a good thing uh it's not very CPU heavy which is Pleasant uh even when you're using Ray tracing on the 3080 you can get like 30 FPS out of it on 1440p 1080p uh but and it's still not CPU heavy but anyway so getting into actual performance for the handhelds now the settings used on handhelds were everything low manually and then so also there's ambient occlusion I believe SSR is another one there's I believe there's another option on top of that that you can toggle off manually and go lower than the low preset so like the low preset will have some things at medium like the scatter density object density is set to like Ultra still or high or something so everything was forced low uh we were also using 720p except for on the GP wind Max 2 I was running 800p on that just because it's the screen resolution size the uh di mentions ratio I know like you Pro like you should run 720p versus 720p to get Apples to Apples but honestly GPD win Max 2 is not the way to play this game anyway because you're running at such a low resolution yeah and we're also using FSR 2 performance across all the tests so getting into performance uh I'm not going to like show or kind of like talk about each individual thing like okay yeah we got 30 whatever FPS versus whatever you can pause and look in in the video watch the charts see the charts or just watch them as I'm talking and I'll just kind of talk like General performance so the Ino obviously or predictably has the best performance now this is due to the faster Ram as well as having the 8 GB of dedicated vram uh and 16 GB of system Ram plus more because we're running 32 GB total now it's super playable on the 7840 U uh with and without fast Ram but you must have 32 GB of minimum in my opinion you can get a 30fps lock and I'll show that here as well that I on the INE or r1s I got a close to 30 FPS lock this testing area seems to be uh a heavy area like even watching digital Foundry stuff like they were kind of using the forest area as a testing area as well and it seemed to be kind of regarded as a heavy testing area um so 18 to 25 watts is my Rec recommended kind of wattage for the io a1s or the gpd1 max 2 or any handheld essentially running the latest generation of uh Apu so GPD win Max 2 is the second best however you can upcl clock that to faster RAM and get probably about the same or very close to Performance that the Inu a1s is getting however due to the screen size it's a major hinder because you're using FSR performance at 720p or 800p it turns into a pretty blurry mess and honestly FSR 2 I've always found to be a lot more shimmery or like just kind of blurry ghosting compared to dlss this is widly regarded to be the case in in a lot of things and you can see that in digital foundaries video even they'll point that out in their testing as well and then predictably and unfortunately the RG has the worst per performance on its own with the Ally you must be running at 25 watts to maintain your FPS kind of consistently the latest Asus drivers give the best performance and is kind of my recommended way to just go with this one I don't honestly ever really recommend the 78 40u drivers on the zed1 extreme unless there was a case of the the the reason for this latest driver was to fix uh Resident Evil Village and the FC soccer game not launching so to side load the 7840 U or 780m igpu drivers onto the zed1 extreme you were able to then bypass that and launch the village uh Resident Evil Village and the soccer game because they were running newer drivers basically they are newer drivers so now Asus is finally caught up and said okay yeah here here's kind of like our latest driver set but it's still not going to have performance increases for alum wake 2 I assume because AMD doesn't even have their main desktop GPU drivers updated yet either and even then when you're running on the RG Ali you will have drops so all machines will have moments of below 30 FPS no matter your wattage there isn't opening scene before this area so the area that I'm running around in the forest scene is basically the very next area but there's like a a minute two minute kind of prologue uh anyway so when you're in that scene there's some pretty heavy effects and I can only assume that further on in the game knowing like playing the first one and knowing remedy as a developer and how they kind of push things it likely will happen again to some degree in that severity later on so I'm not going to show that scene like due to spoilers and for other reasons if you play the game you'll understand why um but anyway so in that scene it will go down to the low 20s on all devices but more so on the RG Ally like I think it was like High Teens uh compared to like in the town you will be getting above like 30 FPS in the town on all handhelds even the Ally you should get kind of like this this should be kind of indicative of some heavier scenes with the knowledge that there is heavier scenes than this that will make a drop hopefully there are mainly in non-playable areas or moments or things where you're not really like in intense combat but you know it will and can happen these are definitely not not optimized at all in any way for this game so this next section will be dedicated to the XG mobiles using the Asus RG Ally so again we have the 380 and the 6850 so 380 is NVIDIA 6850 is AMD 380 is running 16 GB vram but the 6850 is running 12 GB of vram so theoretically the 380 should be more capable at higher settings or higher resolutions uh and doing this you can now have the Asus R Ally launch the game without any errors because you have the 16 GB of RAM when set to Auto uh and then you have uh no vram limit because you're over well over and above the 6 gab uh 6 GB story requirement so predictably the 380 does offer better performance across the board now this in my opinion is obviously mainly because it's a Nvidia sponsored title it was all geared towards RTX R tracing all like the dlss whatever blah blah blah whatever marketing stuff it's got Ray Rec sorry Ray reconstruction like all the latest and greatest stuff so in a nutshell like I'll show the performance charts again but I'm not going to break them down individually 4K is playable on both UH 1440p 60 is more capable on the 3080 1080p uh with rate tracing it's okay uh low rate racing obviously it it can be had at 30 FPS on the 380 and and somewhat at 1440p on the 380 as well definitely not recommended using uh on the uh 6850 at all because it does cause it to tank quite a bit uh and honestly I wouldn't recommend using that as well because you have to run it at FSR like performance or dlss performance to get some decent performance so if you're using it on a bigger screen I wouldn't honestly recommend running 1080p on a big screen with or without uh FSR dlss involved because 1080p on a big screen predictably it would be a 4K screen if you're docking into like your TV or something will just look blurry stretch like just a mess add in again upscaling it'll be even worse so in my opinion I would honestly recommend doing either 1440p 60 kind of shooting for that maybe a 4K 30 you can play with the settings and get better performance just keep in mind I was just doing here's medium preset and then here's medium preset with low and like medium Ray tracing setting whatever but with the DF digital Foundry optimiz settings that I ran here uh you can get much better performance at really not too much of a cost uh except for about like Shadows but you can fix that as well if you want I'm not going to show the digital Foundry optimized settings because I feel like you should just go watch their video support them and get the full breakdown of why each setting is chosen and why it matters cuz there's some optional ones as well so with the XU mobile this game is very playable with the Asus RG Ally That's the only scenario I could see myself recommending this game to somebody with only an ally is if they also had the XG mobile because you can get a great experience Dock and then you could maybe get away with playing handheld for a couple hours here and there but it definitely wouldn't be like my main recommended way to play it's still a very good-looking game at low settings don't get me wrong but it can definitely look a lot better and that's just the main thing right and honestly the new drivers at this point as well for like AMD for the 6850 we just don't have them yet as I mentioned earlier uh these drivers haven't been updated for alum W 2 at all so they're still working on those so there will have to be some retesting for obviously just the igpu if we ever get the update for 7840 or zed1 extreme to maybe include Alam W 2 optimizations as well as retesting the 6850 uh dedicated GPU now there had been crashes on both the 6850 with and without RT on as well as on the 3080 now when R tracing was enabled it also did crash on the Ally at 1080p this was with the new uh Asus R Allied drivers so that was basically on me because I forgot to change my settings when testing from the XG mobile before I hit continue and want to go verify that my settings were right it'll just crash right over because you run out of system or vram at the end of the day conclusions recommendations whatever you want to call it you can get again you can get a way of playing it on the Asus RG Ali it is technically playable I wouldn't recommend you buy it again just for the Asus RG Ally you'll have a great time with the XG mobile at any resolution I think you can tweak your settings whatever I do recommend again you check out the digital Foundry setting for their uh Prime whatever settings and honestly if you have the 7840 u in any device I would recommend if at minimum have 32 GB of RAM preferably fast Ram you will have a good time in most scenes you'll have little drops here and there but if you only have 16 gbes of ram you're going to run into the same issues like on the Ally so this will likely be kind of the status quo going forward for the nextg games or whatever you want to call them especially with the Unreal Engine 5 and in digital Founders video they found out that even if you have like R tracing disabled in Alum wake 2 there still is a system level rate tracing so that's kind of like uh fortnite when you can enable Hardware rate trace or just loomin rate tracing without Hardware acceleration so again I I do expect to see this more in the future with that 16 GB uh physical system Ram limitation and gamees just saying hey no we're not going to run well you can already see that in Diablo 4 if you have less than 16 GB of vram I believe can't set your uh texture settings past medium or low honestly 64 GB is definitely a waste I wouldn't recommend that I only did that on the gbd1 max 2 because I'm planning on replacing my desktop with it 32 GB would be my minimum kind of recommendation going forward 64 again definitely a waste if there was kind of like a dream device if it had 24 GB of RAM or something you could then have a 8 GB of dedicated vram and then have 16 GB of system Ram without running into any kind of page file issues hopefully like on a 16 GB uh device but the game will also not always perform as shown in the benchmarks here this is far from a 40fps game uh even like yeah on handhelds it's yeah not it's not a 40 FPS game at all you will get scenes where you're getting above 40 50 close to 60 at times but yeah it's definitely not a 40 FPS game on the hand builds uh I would recommend just doing a 30fps lock like shown here on the uh Inu a1s now I did try multiple different ways to get it running on the steam deck all right and go figure so just as I was getting everything uploaded and was doing all the checks and everything I found out a way how to get it working on the steam deck so I'll kind of go into it really quickly so I tried heroic games launcher bottles I tried doing it directly through Steam nothing would work the only way I could get it to work was through lutrus so installing lutrus you can find that on the App Store uh also while you're in there install proton up QT uh there you can get the proton uh wine protons necessary shown here so once you install Alum wake through the Epic uh epic games launcher sorry through the lutrus you can go into the Alum wake settings and just kind of follow along so you want to set it up so the wine uh prefix and it's running as a wine Runner make sure you have it as the wine G proton 21 then once you have all that run it once and then it'll crash on you and then you can download the dlls so uh the dependencies and everything so go uh follow along here click on this Arrow uh go to Wine configure and then or sorry wine tricks my apologies and then download these three files here once you have those downloaded it'll probably air out a couple of times something might hang just let it sit for like maybe 2 3 minutes uh if that box doesn't go away uh just cancel it out and then whatever like it it I saw somewhere else that if you cancel it out then it should be okay now you can go about updating this with the beta Misa drivers and that's basically like the equivalent of like the graphics drivers for Linux so what will happen is if you're running the stock standard whatever drivers uh you'll launch the game you'll hit new game continue load whatever and then it'll just black screen but you'll hear the audio still nothing will happen now I did try downloading or did download the beta drivers and then trying to manually punch them in through Steam I just couldn't get it to launch it would say that hey your your drivers are out of date now like there's a graphics card error so I figured okay I'm not able to get it to launch still whatever it's still broken then I had thought okay I'll change over to steam 3.5.1 or whatever they're out on the stable Beta release candidate whatever channel uh so I downloaded that and then I deleted the uh the beta launch command in Steam and then I just launched the game normally and everything worked so For Better or For Worse so we'll show the uh game playay here I didn't bother doing any benchmarks because honestly yeah like even with everything turned down manually to low 720p FSR performance I played with smt I played with the GPU lock settings CPU lock settings uh I didn't play with overclocking because quite honestly it it wouldn't save save it here it's way too consistently below like 25 20 FPS at times so even just like showing the opening area here like it's completely unplayable so my original suspicions were true that yes I would just not recommend playing this on the steam deck at all if ever because it likely never will be optimized so this is kind of like the death of the steam deck and death of the Rog Ally kind of because of the 16 gbyte uh physical system memory RAM requirements uh you're going to see this more and more or in the future I imagine with Unreal Engine 5 becoming more prevalent uh it's just going to become the future so as I'll get into my conclusion 32 GB is kind of the way forward in my opinion for handhelds unfortunately then to bring everything back to Windows handhelds uh game drivers have not been released yet for even the desktop gpus like I said before but you can't bypass the 16 GB limitation on the Ally uh performance will likely get better but again you're just not going to be able to grow more RAM unfortunately I do not recommend Alm wig 2 on the Asus Rog Ally um even then like unless you're fine running plugged in most of the time especially on the RG having to run like 20 25 watts basically to get consistent somewhat consistent performance you it's not going to be a low wattage game so you you'd get like maybe an hour or something a gam play unplugged uh it's a potentially good experience on GPD or 78 40u devices I or whatever with 32 GB of RAM and over honestly I wouldn't recommend playing this only on handhelds if you must play it wait for it to go on sale wait for it to get a little bit more optimized with some updates game updates driver updates and everything if you have a proper kind of gaming desktop or laptop this would be a a good complimentary experience to playing it from there but beyond that I would again I just would not recommend playing it on the handheld solely or going out to get it for the handheld solely in this state but that'll do it for this one as always I just want to give a huge shout out to my channel members Joey VR Rico 1217 Darkstar Roy Wayne Rude access and p3c mkr again I don't expect you guys to be here forever honestly I expect kind of a lot of you to drop off now now or I'm surprised you haven't dropped off by now but again I I appreciate each and every one of you so thank you so much for sticking around for as long as you have or even considering in the first place and finally just thank you for taking the time to watch this share not share like dislike comment doesn't matter to me as long as somebody got something out of it uh as well I'd like to just give a quick shout out to the handhelds United uh Discord channel so that's where you'll find fellow handheld YouTubers smaller YouTubers such as oks gamer Gamers generation gaming for insight project SBC uh you'll see uh cppc Tech and a few more so anyway I'll leave the join stuff whatever in the description for that again that's handheld United we've just kind of come together to create like a Unison kind of Discord space to hang out support chill whatever as always I hope everyone has a great [Music] day yeah
