thank you thank you all right so uh i decided i decided to just start this stream here because uh i've been posting some time lapse videos on my channel and i've seen lots of people asking me to uh to do a tutorial on how i create these illustrations right so basically that's what i'm gonna do here today it's gonna be a quick one i'm just gonna go with the basics so you you can get started on how i render stuff here okay okay thanks jenna alright so let's do this so uh the software i'm using is affinity designer as you may already know but this can be used with any other vector based software like illustrator or even photoshop for that matter even though photoshop is a raster software you can use the same process as i'm gonna show you guys here uh so basically this is one uh one of the artworks i'm working right now at work and i go through the through this process here i start with a clean line art of the the drawing that i wanna that i wanna render and from that i i choose the base colors and then start rendering everything so for instance let me get another one here this one here for example this car so i start with a sketch it could be very rough sketch okay i just i just did these lines here just so i could practice inking traditionally but it could be any rough sketch on any other software if you like or even on a piece of paper you just take a photo of it and you're gonna use it as a reference to start rendering all right uh so i start with the sketch then i have uh i place the sketch here with uh some transparency and i start drawing the lines on top see here this transparent sketch i thought draw those cling lines on top with the pen tool after that i choose my base colors this base colors they do not account for lighting for lighting or shadows or anything of that sort and then i go with the toughest part which is actually rendering adding the gradients the effects blurry gaussian gaussian blur overlays and so on so here's the same thing i'm going to show you a few examples now sometimes i do turn around so that the 3d modelers can can use as a reference to model the the object i also do some characters as you can see it's all vectors here sometimes i use raster stuff for uh textures and whatnot but most most of it is is vectors it's like a vector spaghetti here same here i had a sketch then i i did the drawing on top of it only using lines base colors and final render just a few more examples [Music] [Music] yeah yeah i actually do uh most of my my artwork used for uh for reference so 3d modelers can can model them and use use them in games but some of them like this wonder these are uh just personal pieces that i like to to do just to have fun process here it's all vector madness here since i work with game development i also create states for characters like for this sonic based game that we did a while ago so we have a boss here with a with the states here and another one you see that this sketches don't really need to be this detailed you know it's just just rough sketches would because in the end just i'm just gonna get rid of them [Music] oh cool thanks glad you like it yeah that that took a while it took me like nine hours to finish but it pays off there's also mascots let's see if i can grab the sketch here more characters it takes a while but it's not that difficult you just have to have a sense of light and shadow see all those loose shapes there yeah so i'm gonna show you how i how i do that right i'm uh i'm gonna show you with a quick example let me close all these files or otherwise it's gonna lag the software a lot now there's also this one which i use for a card game that a friend of mine created more spaghetti and this is the first version of this office that i was doing because i started with a very modern look i grabbed some references and started isometric then i got a a briefing that told me that i had to go more cartoony and with a more vintage look so i grab this references and i use them to make this one which i'm going to finish by monday just have to finish the chair the the rug and the add some color grading all right okay so let's let's do this so first thing i do is i sketch as i mentioned before like uh i have a i draw it on paper i take a picture of it or what i mostly do i draw them on on an ipad using procreate any medium will do and then i start using the pen tool on top of the sketch to draw the lines the base clients so i have three steps right basically are in three steps uh we have the first one is line art the second one is base colors and the third one is rendering whoops rendering yeah there which is the toughest part so let's say start with a simple shape here so i picked the pen tool and i'm going to draw this shape like some someone like a bean so i'm taking into consideration that you you guys already know how to use the pen tool it's pretty easy actually let me feel this guy here so we just click around to draw those straight lines and if you click and hold and draw the curves break curves as well and so on okay i have this very weird bean here let me change its shape so it he looks nicer oops see how ugly this is here it's a sharp corner it doesn't look natural at all so you can use the pen tool and drag it to make a curve or you can use this nice feature the affinity designer has which is the corner tool where is it oh here this this is the corner tool to or you can you can press c to select it and you can click and drag here see what it does it changes into a circle here so it's moving those corners okay very simple shape to start with right so now that i have the shape i'm going to change to choose the color let's make it green nice green color here yeah this is going to be the base color for it and after that what i usually do is i i select the object and i go to the color palette here i i go to the stroke color opacity and i tone it down to about ten percent it doesn't make that much of a difference here because it's a single beam but when you have a lot of objects here and you have all those lines overlapping they they usually throw me off they they make it seem that those limits between light and dark uh are already okay but and when you remove the lines they don't make any sense at all so if you subdue the lines like that they don't interfere visually with your with your rendering so okay i have the base color here i tone down the opacity for the stroke color but i also like to do a i like to have this color thingy floating here instead of nested up there because i use it a lot i don't have to move my mouse over there all the time it's easily accessible alright so base color set what i do now i'll define the the light direction so uh let me just draw an arrow here just so we can i don't usually draw that i have the the light direction in my head already i'm just gonna draw here so it's easier to explain so this is where the line is coming from oh yeah yeah that's a good question uh i set the so jenna just asked me why not have stroke opacity to zero why do you keep it on object well uh because i i like to actually have a hint of what the where the line is because sometimes uh if uh the object has a fold in here see i i have a hint of where that fold is gonna be and i'm gonna use that to actually draw the shadow where i want it to be if i don't have the line at all i'd be known the wiser you know so for instance let me see oh i don't have them here anymore i just removed them yeah but i had all the lines in here and i when i'm done i just remove them if they are actually visually disturbing you know okay so i have the bin here the light is coming from this direction and if you have experience with cell shading illustrations you're gonna have an easy time doing this because you just have to draw a line showing where the the shadow is going to be so with the the light the light is coming this direction here so the shadow is going to be somewhat around here right and i close that shape [Music] shapes closed and there's this thing that i do there's this shortcut which is control shift v which lets allows you to paste an object inside another so i'm going to grab this guy i'm going to cut it ctrl x and we're going to do a ctrl shift v here oh i'm sorry let's control alt v i mean ctrl shift v is for another thing that i'm going to show you later so see it it's been pasted inside this object [Music] so i'm going to i don't need the stroke anymore i'm just going to work with the fill here i'm going to pick the color you can just drag it here to pick the color and then you click here to apply it or you can drag it and press enter and it's gonna apply it like for instance i'm gonna drag from this this color here i press enter applied okay yeah so i just i grab the green one apply the color i'm going to choose a darker shade of the color [Music] it's also a good idea to change a bit of its hue to make it more dynamic it's less plasticky so yeah that's the first step for adding the shadow [Music] i'm pretty sure illustrator has that same function but i don't know i don't know how to use it so yeah just check it out and tell me later okay so i have the shading here and i'm going to use a layer effect here i'm just click this effects button here check gaussian blur and then adjust the slider you see see you can already tell that there is volume here just by adding that yeah so that's it for the shadow move my arrow here how about light so light is touching this area here as well as this area here so what i do is i'm just going to draw where the light is going to hit choose a lighter shade and move it a bit to yellow if you're having difficulty choosing colors what i suggest is that you start by doing everything in black and white that's gonna help a lot because you're you're gonna focus on on the volume itself on the 3d nest of the of the object and you don't have to to fiddle too much with colors which is an extra step so that that's what i suggest you just start with the black and white okay now i add more gaussian blur here nice let me change the background color for this artboard here there [Music] see since there's a gaussian blur applied to this guy here it overflows a bit outside of the object so what you can do unless you want that the the it's your intention to keep that effect yeah what you what you can do you can just grab this guy cut it and paste inside the object so he never goes outside see so there you have it for this guy you can also add some shadow here guest shadow here it looks like a jelly bean done it okay what else can we do since light is coming from this direction here it's gonna hit the floor and it's gonna bounce onto the jelly bean it's gonna bounce here so what you can do is create another light shape here some more like this and here's another tip i want to apply the same the same effect up and i applied to this guy here to this line here i want to have it applied here as well so what you can do i have the up of the object selected here i double click it so i can select the objects inside it okay you can see see you can see like all two objects inside it so i have this one selected i copy it ctrl c then i select this guy and i press ctrl alt v oh i mean ctrl shift v this one this is ctrl shift v so what this shortcut does is it's going to co paste all the the the effects and features of an object it's going to paste it to another one see i can already see the loud the light has bounced off here so uh but i'm gonna turn down the gaussian blur because i don't want it don't want this to be too blurry why is that because the light source here is is closer right so it gets less blurry [Music] you can also adjust transparency you can use the numerical keys to adjust the transparency there all right what else can we do some highlights yeah this guy is supposed to be a bit shiny so what you can do let's draw a shape for a highlight here i'm doing this other shape because i want i want this shape to cut through this guy here so what i can do is a boolean operation like uh i should i choose both shapes then up here we have the boolean operations so in this case i want to subtract one shape from the other so i want this gray shape here to be subtracted from this white one so i select both and i press subtract there and then i can add a transparency to it there's a tool here in affinity designer called transparency tool is it which is this wine glass icon here or you can press y so i'm gonna press y and i'm just gonna click and drag see i can adjust the transparency yeah just added some transparency to it let me do the same with this side here then we're going to move on to a real-life illustration so shortcuts are your friends use them a lot what i also like to do is adding layers of quote shininess to the objects i i just drew a white shape here i'm gonna set the layer mode to overlay i use it a lot overlays like the the layer effect that i use the most the blending mode i use the most i'm going to add some gaussian blur see it pops out not too happy with the highlights but this is just an example maybe subdue them a bit yeah it looks nicer and since like this this guy is sitting on a table or something i could also do this like the table is parts of the table is reflecting on the jelly bean overlay as well transparency let me change the opacity a bit i'm gonna cut it and paste it inside the object there see it's as if uh there's a table the end of the table is reflecting onto the jelly bean here all right that's it for the jelly bean here so i started with a basic base shape and i filled with a base color i go through these steps for the whole illustration right it's important that that you don't skip those steps otherwise it's going to throw you off regarding the especially with the ambient light and how interesting you want colors to look all right so i wanna another thing i wanna tell you is about layers the layers panel i just hate working with layers ever since i started doing illustrations back in like uh 2007 uh i just think that feeling with layers it just disrupts your creative process you know you're here drawing and choosing colors and then you have to okay have you have to find that layer here or where is that okay i have to move it up there and down here oh yeah it's terrible so what i do is i rarely use the layers panel and then you're gonna ask me but but how are you gonna how do you deal with the objects that have like hundreds or even thousands of layers like this one look how many layers this this guy has so this is what i do i start drawing the objects let me create like some random objects here different colors [Music] okay they're all piled up here and uh i need this square to go behind the blue square to go behind the green square so i just send it to back like hey i hold ctrl and left bracket it goes back ctrl right bracket goes to the front but what if i have hundreds of objects here it's not going to be as easy let's see let's say i want to move this light blue rectangle here behind this blue one and in between them i have hundreds of objects so what i actually do i select this guy i cut it i click the object i want to for it to go behind i paste it it goes straight on in the front of the object i paste it on so i just move one step back [Music] so that way you don't need to keep fiddling with the the layers panel here [Music] all right so let's start with a actual illustration here let me create a new file [Music] i take an illustration here okay this rabbit semi right here i did a while ago [Music] pretty simple let me save this guy [Music] so first thing i'm going to set its transparency to like 10 so i can barely see i'm gonna use it as a guide to start drawing the the shapes and the vectors on top of it i'm not gonna do the whole character otherwise it's gonna take too long it's gonna take like i don't know five to eight hours just i'm just gonna go through the process of rendering the head maybe shoulders as well just so you can see how it works so yeah i have the rabbit here whoops percent opacity i lock i lock it i just press ctrl l to lock it so i don't accidentally drag it and with the pen tool i start drawing with the pencil or i can use the the primitives like i'm gonna use this circle here the ellipse tool and drag the ellipse here move it back so i can see the illustration on top of it there so let me change the background color yeah much better okay [Music] so i have the head here i press ctrl enter so i can edit this primitive [Music] change its shape [Music] right that looks nice let's go for the year what can i say instead of moving the layer here i'm going to do what i'm going to do i'm going to cut the ear here base right in front of the head and there you go i need you to keep moving layers i don't want the tip of the ear to be this pointy so i'm going to use the corner tool here as well i'm going to press c yeah rounder twitter let's make a shape here for the inside of the ear and draw a line here just so i can see where the the shadow here is gonna be so so there's a phone here i'm just gonna draw this line just so i can i can tell where the fold is i'm just i'm gonna get rid of these lines by the end of the illustration so more like an ellipse here [Music] purple and the nose corner tool yeah let's fill this guy up white so now we have the head let's go for the shoulder plate here [Music] [Music] i'm gonna draw the inside shape of this shoulder plate here so i just overshoot my line whoops close the shape fill it with white i'm gonna cut it and paste it inside the object let's deal with this corner here there and choose a nice color here something like that more like a bluish color maybe yep what i usually do i i pick a slightly darker shade of the color that i wanted to be in the end because i'm gonna be drawing all the the light parts on top of it and it's gonna go lighter eventually so the inside of the the ear is going to be a bit pinkish color and not this one there shoulder plate let's go with a red and gold all right the shoulder plates are going to be red i like to use the hue saturation lighting sliders here luminosity sliders here you can also use rgb or any other sliders that you feel comfortable with i feel comfortable with a huge saturation and luminosity so i'm going to copy this guy i'm going to select this other guy and i'm going to paste the attributes so it it's faster this way and the rims are going to be golden well they won't look good in now but they will eventually trust me i'm gonna cut it select this object paste attributes this guy's going to have a red nose right and red ice yeah that looks cool and for the peel pupil i'm gonna choose the same red and i'm gonna go way darker almost black and for the white of the eye let me turn it down a bit there always try to avoid pure white and pure black they they look too artificial now i think i'm gonna close this shape here yeah there you go so sometimes what i do i select this object this the the illustration i duplicate it and i try i try testing other colors just so i can explore more because i could actually come up with a another base color that looks better by accident so happy little accidents just like bob ross would say right so i have it all selected i add an adjustment layer hsl and i start changing the hue just receiving you can have another color combination here that's okay i'm pretty happy with this guy right now now it's the fun part where we actually start rendering this guy so i'm going to duplicate it so here we have the basic shapes base colors then we're going to start rendering [Music] so what i actually do here when i start rendering i click this guy here on top there is a pixel view mode see this is this is now actually vector mode and if you click it it goes through pixel view mode why do i do that it's because i don't go overboard with the detailing stuff because if it's in vector mode you can zoom endlessly and start like drawing every single hair of a character for instance and when you zoom out no one is going to see that like you worked you worked a lot and nobody's going to see it so if i have pixel view mode activated you you're you're not gonna fall into the trap you actually see the pixels in here you know okay nobody's gonna see this much here so i can stop right there all right so let's start with the the arrow and let me get this same arrow here for the jelly bean let me paste it here so you can see where the lights coming from all right so uh i take into account there the volume the of this shape here so it curves around like this right so let's start with some cell shading always start with the larger objects and you as you move along you'll go to the smaller ones so the largest one here is the head so i'm gonna draw this here it's the same thing that we did for the jelly bean [Music] apply just some random color i'm just concerned about the shape of the this guy here i'm gonna cut it and paste it inside the head so this is where the shadow is gonna be so i'm gonna pick the blue from the base color and go darker let's change the hue change the hue a bit like so [Music] and let's add a gaussian blur to it there but i i want this part here to be even darker so what you can do is add another layer for the shadow here just close the object pick a random color paste it inside the head choose the darkest shade here and go a bit darker let's remove the stroke here yeah add some gaussian blur there you have it hold on a second okay i'm back since the light is coming from this direction here i'm gonna have to draw a cast shadow here so the nose is actually casting a shadow onto the head here so i'm gonna go like this place it inside the head see i'm not gonna add a gaussian blur to this because uh this object is actually touching this one so there's no no blurriness here it's gonna be a hard shadow the eye is popping out a bit here so i'm gonna also add a bit of a cast shadow here i'm not sure about that one let's let's leave it at that okay just shaded ahead let's go for the year this year here i'm gonna draw the shadow here let's select the first shadow that we have here on the head the head here i'm gonna copy it and paste the attribute to this guy then i'm gonna cut this guy and paste it inside the ear there it's way too blurry for this guy so i'm gonna turn it down a bit yeah there as for this year here what i'm gonna do is identify where the shadow is somewhat around here we're going to face it inside the ear there it looks weird here you see there's this cut here but we're gonna deal with it later so there's a fold in here what i'm gonna do i'm gonna draw a shape like so i don't need this line anymore i'm going to get rid of it and we're using the transparency tool i'm gonna make it fade a bit there you can clearly clearly see there's a fold in there this guy's supposed to be darker because it's in shadow some darken it a bit a bit redder i don't need the strokes anymore so i'm going to get rid of it get rid of this line as well i'm going to use a transparency tool to get rid of this weird effect here so the the ear actually merges into the head well supposedly oh it's fading just the object inside it okay hit ctrl z here okay i'm gonna group this guy then i'm gonna apply the this fading effect ah now it works see it just adds transparency to the to the object so it merges into the head uh if i use textures in my artwork sometimes i do sometimes i draw the textures themselves like for instance let me show you here like this wooden texture here i just drew the shapes here and i started duplicating it because sometimes it's it's faster if i draw them instead of actually looking for the perfect texture to apply to to the objects you know but that depends a lot it depends on the complexity of the object if it's something very that has to have some grit to it and then i i actually use objects uh textures extra textures like concrete for instance if i'm drawing a concrete wall something that's dirty so okay let's go for the eye so the iris is is a concave shape right so uh this side here is darker than this one so what i'm gonna do is just add a gradient fill to it i can press g to select the gradient tool and start dragging so the darker part is on top there and what i also like to do for eyes is adding an over overlay blend mode to the part that's going to be eliminated so have a white shape here set layer mode to overlay add some blur nice i can even overlap more blurry main overlay blending modes here so i added another one on top of it overlay marbler [Music] how cool is that [Music] let me actually duplicate this shape here so i can have a an outline put it behind there yeah there [Music] [Music] how about a highlight transparency tool for the wing add another one here maybe i could google darker here let's see there okay let's create a fold on top of the of the eye here i'm gonna get this guy here copy it face right tributes place it behind the eye add some blur you can see the ice looks like it's inserted into the head now let's add some light coming from from the top here [Music] so this is the shape of the light let's pick the lightest blue we have a little bit lighter apply some blur let's paste it inside this object here oh that's looking nice let's add some transparency here because i don't want this tip here so i'm gonna just add some transparency here so it fades evenly nicely here there okey-dokey let's add even more illumination here do and here as well we just keep adding objects until it looks nice that's basically the process the more you do it the better it gets you just have to go through the hurdle of learning the software and learning how to work with the shortcuts cause shortcuts are a must it's gonna it's gonna speed up your artwork a lot and also let's add uh some light bouncing off here from the bottom so we define what the shape is is going to be so selecting here lighter blue some gaussian blur some transparency you can already see some volume here right i think i could go even darker with this shadow here [Music] so now not everything is final and you can always go back and adjust it later there this guy fix this guy here [Music] i'm gonna make this video available on my channel later after i'm done uh streaming so you can uh you can see the whole process and all the technical tips i gave at the beginning like shortcuts [Music] and the process itself okay so i have the light here blur it a bit let's make a white let's deal with this fold here cut it paste it inside the object choose a darker blue it's just this one here remove the stroke and add some transparency here we could go darker [Music] there [Music] [Music] set some gradient to the white of the eyes [Music] just start operating [Music] so the there's no not an actual lead here i lead here but i set some shadow to pretend there is shadow to the white of the eye cut it place it inside the object i wanted to go behind everything here there some light coming here transparency the eyes in my opinion the eyes are the most fun thing to do as for the jelly bean we did earlier or is it okay here let's set this this line here to the eye so let's do somewhat like this set it to white transparent transparency here set it to overlay cut it and paste it inside it's got to be subtle all right so let's suggest in here so there's just a hint of it here yeah cool let's add some more shadow to this ear here let's pick the darker blue cut it place it inside here oh it's inside a group okay there blur it a bit lighting layer let's add a gradient to this guy nice a bit of overlapping mode so little bit more just keep adding layers worst case scenario you're not going to like it and you just delete it it's nice to experiment like i'm not really sure what i'm doing here but hopefully it's going to look good blur it a bit nice i make this part here a little bit darker because the the head is actually blocking the light because of the the inside of the ear is a bit transparent right it's a bit translucent so the the light's gonna go through it except for this part here where the head is blocking the light there you can always make this darker so i'm just going to cop this copy this guy here whoops we'll copy it paste it attributes paste it inside it's not blurry enough there same with this part here this should be darker see the difference here how flat this is whereas this one is you cannot actually see the volume if i add some shadow here cool as for the nose so what's going on in my mind here like the shape of the nose is like this oops where's the line there so it has this sort of volume here so that's what i'm going to mimic pick the base color for it darken it a bit remove the outline paste it inside the nose inside the object here okay let's add just a little bit of blur i don't want it to be too smooth let's also add a little bit of gradient here there and where the light is hitting i'm going to set it to white and overlay some blur paste it inside the object nice now since this is uh almost this almost looks like a cube like it's not as rounded as the head so it's gonna have a corners so i'm gonna just draw where the corners are gonna be so the corner is gonna be here and here so this is what i'm thinking when thinking about the volume so i'm gonna add some highlights to those corners so i draw this shape here and here set it to white and overlay some transparency here looking at it again it doesn't make much sense because the center of the head is here right the nose should be turned around a bit further there let's see if i can fix that i actually made that mistake when in the drawing itself yeah yeah but that's okay i'll deal with that later so it doesn't take too long let's suppose it's correct so i can go further adding more highlights here nice some light bouncing off here as well it's bothering me a bit that's okay so i don't need this line here anymore i'm gonna remove it from the head hey there mr delgado nice to have you here man i'm gonna make this video available later so you can watch it later no problem i'm gonna try adding some ring light here so you can make this shape pop even more nice same with the year let me adjust the shadow here just keep adjusting stuff until it looks good just bear with me guys because uh this is my first time the that i do this like i stream like a tutorial like thing so uh for the next one next one's a it's gonna be much better hopefully let's see how it goes alright so we have the head done mostly let's go for this shoulder plate here this is going to be easy this is the easiest part so i'm just going to add a gradient here same for this guy since this shoulder plate is overlapping with this one this guy here is casting a shadow onto this one right since the light's coming from this direction so i'm gonna just draw a cast shadow here paste it here move it back there and the same for this yellow part here but since this object this yellow part here is going to be rounded the cast shadow is not going to be straight like this there's going to be a curve here so i'm going to do it like this pick yellow go a bit darker so this darker yellow looks ugly so i'm going to move it a bit to the red and i'm going to paste it inside the object as well see just by doing those cast shadows you can actually tell the the volume of the of the object you can actually see it's 3dness now let's go for the shadows themselves the core shadows so we're going to draw where the shadow is going to be pick the darker yellow that i chose before paste it inside the object blur it i don't need those transparent strokes anymore just gonna remove them let's do the same for this one i'm gonna cop the copy the the attributes for this one paste it on this let me grab the illustration here the original one let me put it here just so we can see it better what the whole character looks like uh there's something wrong here okay it's invisible yeah there okay since this is a metallic object i i could keep keep the the shapes harder i don't need to add blur to them or if i do i just add a just a little bit and it's nice to end them abruptly like i did here so it looks more metal more like bouncing off here so i think we could go darker with this yellow here and warmer there you go that's a nice rabbit in it well it was actually your idea man i liked it so much that i wanted to use this as an example for for this video this one deserves a little bit of blur there uh there should be more shininess added to this place i'm gonna stay like this so again i'm experimenting nice i like that i'm from brazil mate how about you hey there vic i use a mouse you can use a tablet as well but uh i feel more comfortable with the mouse i don't know maybe it's because i shake too much i only i only use a tablet when i'm i'm doing the sketches when i was working with the drawing here i use the tablet i even have affinity designer on the ipad but i don't use it at all because it's not very comfortable for me and not having a keyboard because i use i use shortcuts all the time and not having the keyboard it's you know it's very boring it takes a lot of time to finish an illustration there but that's talking about me i i know that a lot of people use the the ipad affinity designer on the ipad to to their illustrations comfortably that doesn't work for me i'm too old i guess is that some highlights here [Music] is [Music] um you know what what if i make some of the the red light bouncing after the shoulder plate onto the head hopefully it's gonna work out it's subtle i'm not sure about that need some work let's get rid of it [Music] so if you're just starting doing this this kind of rendering you'll you should start with everything as i mentioned before everything black and white so you can actually see the volume of the objects you're drawing because uh sometimes when you you're actually using the colors when rendering uh it's gonna throw you off especially if you're a beginner once you get used to it you can start start using colors one way to tell if the volumes are alright you apply a color blend mode see if you can if you can still see the volume you chose the right colors the right values for the colors right [Music] i think we should go darker here because there's a hole here right going into the head you see i rarely use the layers panel i'm always cutting objects and paste pasting them in front or behind another object and then ordering using shortcuts because if i use layers i'm gonna go mad because look at that like there's hundreds of layers already or a hundred i don't know could easily go to a thousand whoops well i work i use affinity designer only sometimes i use affinity photo just because of the some effects that i want to apply which infinity doesn't have but it's like 99 of the time it's affinity designer and also uh since i i also work with user experience for apps and for games i also use figma when i draw when i draw screens yeah interface i like to prototype there as well sometimes i uh i draw the screens in affinity designer and i just send some screenshots into figma just so i can have a working prototype there yeah that's about it that's the whole process i use for all my illustrations here same thing i had the basic shape here i drew where the shadow was going to be like the light was coming here from the right right side i drew where the shadow was going to be paste it inside added some blur see here's the shape for the shadow here's the shape for the the light that's bouncing off here's where i pretended to use a texture but i actually drew some some lines for the trousers see it's just a vector brush okay so what i do after i'm done with this step here so let's suppose the illustration is finished and the illustrations finished here let me get rid of this image here i just have to find it oh there you go [Music] that's not it where is it okay so that's why i hate working with layers i'm checking the wrong artboard oh there you go found you goodbye so let's suppose the whole illustration is finished but i actually do i group it all up i duplicate it so now i have one sitting on top of the other whoa it's way slow now after some time if you need design just starts dragging a bit so i have to close and open it again but that's okay for now so what i actually do i duplicate the illustration put it on top of the other one i rasterize it because uh this is going to be like thousands of layers by the end of the illustration so if i rasterize it it's gonna be way lighter and after that i add some adjustment layers like i change some of the hue it looks quite right i group it so the other one is still sitting behind it see and uh using the transparency tool i do this just so that you have some color grading so it looks more visually interesting see let's see the difference see it looks more deep more uh interesting here [Music] i have a better example for it let me find it where is it here so i have the sketch line art base colors shading for this one i i went full cell shaded i didn't do anything blurry as you can tell see everything is hard shadows and hard lights i was trying something different and when i was done with it i had color grading see how it looks warmer as it goes further down it's way more interesting [Music] yeah i agree affinity designer is a 100 percent professional software uh too bad it's not being used by the industry it's not an industry standards that's still held by adobe but since i work in a small studio that's not a big problem at all yeah so uh so that's it guys [Music] later on i'm gonna finish this rendering this illustration maybe i'll stream the the whole process to the end so you can you can see it or maybe i'll i'll have a time-lapse of it who knows well that's it hopefully you'll you could learn a little bit of how of my process and now come back again at a later time thanks for watching everyone take care stay safe and make sure to subscribe so you can get a notification that's when i i come online again all right bye-bye see ya [Music]
