hey y'all John here today we're going to be upgrading my Nas with more storage so I went to my local Micro Center picked up two one terabyte 970 Evo plus drives that I'm going to be using I did not go with the 980 Pro because I don't need the extra bandwidth but these are going to be more than fast enough um as of right now my Nas currently has 10 gig ethernet built in but I have no switch in between that because again it's just me I don't have a team that's working in my house so um I picked up a 10 gig card just so I can add 10 gig Ethan on the other end so the nas RDS 10 gig but I want 10 gig on the workstation as well so I'm going to set you I'm going to show you how to basically set this up from putting it in the in the nas to basically formatting it setting up raid one and then we're going to use static IPS to basically allow this this network card to communicate with the other 10 gig ethernet card on the other end so let's get started first thing we're going to do is log into my Nas and we are going to shut it down so we'll do that and once that's done I'll show you inside the nas here's the enclosure and here are the two drives so foreign scale I'm going to go and add my new drives we're going to add these to the pool as you can see we have two end-game drives both in one terabyte I'm gonna add those in on this side but this is going to be a mirror there we go I'm gonna just call this QP Dash current definitely going to be encrypted and from what I hear GCM is the best algorithm right now CCM isn't secure so I would do that and then we are going to create run down with the encryption key and I'll throw that into my password database all right so as you can see we have a brand new drive here just sitting here I am going to make a new data set I'm going to call it current projects perfect all of this the all these defaults look good I'm going to change this to SMB perfect double check over one more time save perfect now I need to add my permissions so since I'm the only one here I'm going to strip all of this out foreign about different groups accessing this I'm gonna redo this perfect leave execute on apply group recursive even though there's nothing in there and apply so root will still have access of course obviously ACL Dash Quintin photo read write execute other will have execute as well save and now it's ready so now I'm going to go over here and we're going to add it as a share navigate to it that's what I'm going to name mine really really long name but it works I'm not gonna have it transfer everything for me I'm gonna do that myself make sure the data set still has the same permissions yes it does and now as you can see I have my old current projects Drive which is on my Excel strides but those are slow and then this would be the new current project on the nvme now if I was let's say moving data between data sets I would honestly just set it up in a way so that it would go into the data set you would create a snapshot and create a snapshot there and then from there you would go over to data protection and then you would do a replication task so it looks something like this and then that would just replicate all the data from here to this drive without this basically as long as the snapshot is up to date it would just automatically replicate I'm not going to be doing that today so I'm going to skip that these failed messages are okay one drive is having some API issues as well as well as Google photos those two are usually problematic anyways I will fix those later um oh actually as a matter of fact these don't even exist anymore I don't even know why I have this done it should not be running so those can be closed off all right so this is my workstation I have a 12 700k in here 32 gigs of RAM and I have four ssds in this in this system one is my system for Fedora one is my system for Windows and I have two sitting at scratch drives so we are going to get this drive installed here and we're gonna start moving along all right we are logged into the nas I'm gonna go into control panel and show you where I'm at with my system so of course my system has onboard ethernet and Wi-Fi so I turn those both off they're unplugged and you can see there is a new 10 gig connection so we have the one gig line that's going into my switch and we have the 10 gig which is going straight into the nas so it is there it's any receiving data of course there is no switch in between so we have to set up static IP addresses so that is what we're going to hit next so we're gonna go over the network I'm going to make sure that all this is set up correctly so I don't break anything I'm gonna lock these down to these addresses 24 subnet and this guy is going to be on dhcd it's already having that great I'm gonna test the changes just so I know nothing will go offline save yes all right now I this will be this is the 10 gig link so I'm going to name it that it's cool now we're going to add an alias on this this will be 10 that 100 got 1.1 let's see I think that'll be good 24 subnets and we are going to save changes now let's see if I can get this set up correctly we're going to go into it's offline I hit this guy I'm going to properties Sony pv4 I'm going to set myself up [Music] DNS addresses to 100 all right all right let's see if this goes sure it sticks yes I want that to work cool we might have something now let's open up the command prompt and we want to clean this address and my type today guys we did it we have ping which means that the server the Nas is responding so we're gonna get some stuff set up all right now that we have the network configured we are going to see if we can do a test copy to the one gig link and then we'll do another one that goes towards the the so one towards the one gig link another one towards the 10 gig so let's get this started here we're gonna go directly to the nas just so I know that is definitely going through the switch um 100 there's nothing else running as of right now as you can see let me redo that one more time all right so now we are going to do a speed test just the average comparison Just Between the one gig link and the 10 10 gig link just so you can see the difference in speed all right so now that we have it configured I'm going to show you this this is a little speed test copying files from my nvme drive to the nas we're going to use the the one gig link first so you see how fast that is and then we'll do the 10 gig and you'll see the difference in speed so let's get connected to this guy we are going to connect to 100 there's nothing else running as of right now so we're just gonna get that booted all right we're going to connect to nvme again this is the one gig link foreign gig folder this is one gig all right as you can see I was averaging about 100 to 110 megabytes a second that's fairly decent but pretty slow for video processing now we are going to do the same thing I'm going to delete it first we're gonna do the same thing but we are going to run this over 10K a bit and see how this goes so let's let this delete perfect we're going to go over to my desktop I'm going to pull the same folder 731 now we're going to go and go into this PC and get this into over 10 gigabits so as you can see this is the 10.100 address I'm going to shrink this down as a little bit I'm gonna switch to the 10 gig and let's watch carefully on this one we're gonna see so much data come in so let's go over here 10 to 100 that 1.1 that is the 10 gig connection and we're going to paste it now let's see the speed this might be bottlenecks by myself drive but that's also in vme so we should be okay and as we can see it is a lot faster it's it's chopping through this stuff so we're currently sending a five gig and you can see the ETA is a lot way faster see CPU usage on the nas see where that is at there is encryption going on as well so Gotta Give it that but so far I think this is going pretty well just let that finish up if I turned off encryption it'll probably copy even faster because honestly it's probably copying to Ram as it right now before encrypting and sending to the two drives alrighty copy is complete thanks again for watching stay tuned for the next video please subscribe if you haven't already and let me know if you guys think I could do anything better or if you have any ideas for new content thanks and stay tuned [Music]
