Adam Savage here in the cave with a new one they build this one is of a particular category that I don't often explore but one of the great pleasures of being able to make stuff is making stuff that is useful to other people specifically like when your friends have a problem to solve and you can solve that problem for them by making something that is a deep and amazing thrill to make something that someone else would find useful and a few years ago I helped my friend Patton Oswalt make a Doctor Octopus costume because his daughter wanted to go out as spider-man I don't think she went out as spider-man but he still got a great dr. octopus costume and today's one day build is also helping a friend out of a jam my friend amber Ruffin is a comedy writer comedian and she works on Seth Meyers show one of the best shows and amber was tweeting the other day about how much she's got her stuff together and then she posted a picture of the fact that their couch is broken and it's being held up by a can of beans and I told her that I've got some wood around here in the shop and I would cut a chunk to the correct size and send it to her so that she did not have to rely upon a can of beans for the structural integrity of her couch we can give her a piece of wood that will do that and that is what I aim to do I've got the wood right here this is a piece of I think it's poplar and I'm going to cut it to the correct size I've got a can of beans for reference and I'm - let's see I think I want to cut it long and then cut it down Oh perfect great ah no I need to cut that down square - okay so oh wow okay I got to do a little work on this before okay - the tables off I don't like these kind of cuts they're not fun - oh you know what I'm gonna do I'm gonna cut a shorter chunk of this wood before I cut the whole thing on the table saw that's what I'm gonna do let's make some marks I'll just make it extra long I've got some room to play yeah there's this whole class of tools that I think of as tools you wouldn't know about unless some generous person tells you about them and this is one of those this is a Japanese saw the difference between this saw and an American saw is mainly that it cuts on the pole that way rather than that way American saw us that they cut like that these the teeth are facing backwards to cut on the pole and frankly as a person who's cut things their whole lives with saws it's just much more stable to have that moreover if you're using a properly sharpened Japanese saw you don't have to use a ton of pressure the cutting is both gentle and very solid lastly I know you heard the term Japanese tools and you think maybe this is a super expensive saw and the fact is you can spend as much as you want to on a Japanese saw but you can also buy one for about 25 bucks we're gonna include a link to one that I use and like here in the shop below but this is one of those very special tools I've had one in my toolbox now for 30 years in fact when I had my doctor bag toolboxes at ILM I disconnected this and made a quick release for it so it could fold into two and sit in my toolbox well that went so easy the thing is is I don't love making giant big thick table saw cuts it's not fun it actually feels quite dangerous to be honest this is a still needs a bunch of trimming okay I am going to do this I got to cut this off I guess I'm going to cut off a little bit like that I'm gonna do all these cuts with my Japanese saw now I'm going to cut the corners off all right now we have a rough out of the shape of wood and I've got to make it round and I know you know how much I love my machine lathe but I also love my wood lathe so I'm breaking it back out again hey little buddy time to get to work good nice that's pretty good oh this is gonna get messy you ready for it look at that making progress okay grabbing some sandpaper ooh smooth look at that I love poplar okay so now what am i doing well I think it's pretty clear that the chunk of wood I'm making is gonna be the exact same size as this can of beans that ever used to hold up a couch so I'm gonna make it look just like you can too it's gonna be the same shape and the same size yeah and then you're gonna put these can ribs on it oh here we go right okay that's I'm pretty pleased with that Zack same size almost the exact same height okay that's the next thing I got to do I got to cut this and put it on my machine lathe to do the final final perfect shaping here we go you hear that wasn't that neat all right I originally thought that I was going to ah I forgot even I was wearing those I originally thought that I was going to hand draw a label that's the same label as the beans here but I think this is too funny on its own so I think I'm gonna paint this silver right Oh I'm gonna let that dry for a few minutes we have a little problem and it's always the same problem which is I coated this was primer and then I gave it a coating of silver paint and then I gave it a clear coat and the clear coat always kills the silver painting kills it it kills it dead this is no longer shiny it's now just sort of like highlighted gray so I'm gonna hit it again with a chrome eager chrome my favorite the molteau paint pen refill and then I'm going to seal it with all clad to sealer my two favorite chrome sealer combo and that ought to get me all the way there now you can send this stuff down or you can actually spray it right out of your airbrush and I kind of like to do that it thins down nicely with lacquer thinner okay here we go here we go you stay there yeah all right sorry me now it's time to replicate the pull-tab yes the pull-tab when I was a kid we didn't that pull tabs on our soup I could do this with an exacto I could do this with a scroll saw I could do this with a jigsaw or my bandsaw but I'm really digging these heavy-duty Milwaukee scissors they every shop has scissors if you're gonna only buy one pair this is not a bad come on just a little bit of aluminum just show little metallic look excuse me I was all being funny and then I lost my part oh it always goes so much harder say oh that's where that was awesome just a little bit of a metallic look yeah that's not bad okay no yeah it's close enough okay it gets funnier by the second okay eight inch drill bit here we come that's a real can of beans that's my wooden can of beans it's actually lighter than the real thing and way stronger from a compressive strength this will hold up Amber's couch forever if she decides to never get around to fixing her couch I have one more detail to add to this which is a kind of detail that you would put on your baked beans if you had roommates if you don't have roommates and you've never had roommates oh you've led a sheltered life seriously we're gonna call this Amber's beans exclamation point don't touch yeah I think that's bono one more DJ one more detail this is gonna be such a good detail here it comes that there we go amber your couch support is on its way I keep saying it's the last detail well I have put on all the final details but there is one last thing I need to add to this because it is effectively a sculpture I'm gonna sign it to Amber with support an official piece of savage artwork
