hey everybody adam savage here in my cave and what i have here is a very exciting model it is an unlicensed fan-made version of the at-at which is you would know it as one of the walkers from the hoth sequence at the beginning of the empire strikes back the best of all the star wars i'm not going to say the name of the people that make this they have a new venture and uh they don't want to piss off lucasfilm which i totally understand uh so i am just going to unbox this and you're just going to have to i can't tell you where you can get one of these i'm sorry uh i you know this is unlicensed fan art is what this is oh my goodness this is going to be pretty oh wow those are beautiful castings oh holy okay i don't usually curse in these videos but um the folks that made these clearly have an attention to detail that is admirable and beautiful uh multiple castings i've yet to find a bubble wow oh my goodness oh yeah i'm gonna shoot close-ups of this we're gonna know the crap out of this oh dude dude oh my goodness i love clean castings there is nothing like a beautifully clean casting dude wow this is gonna be fun we've got some leg parts some more leg parts some more leg parts and more leg parts oh yeah oh yeah okay so that is let's see here just want to make sure all right i'm just i'm going to do a little bit of cleanup so i get to do a really nice knolling of this that is beautiful gorgeous magnificent fabulous incredible guns the little guns oh yeah um feet we've got some feet oh there we are this is beautifully packed oh man no way are you kidding me what the freaking hell holy cow how beautiful can you get jesus crow so that one foot two foot red foot blue foot oh yes i'm really look i normally wouldn't do a video like this where i'm showing you something amazing but not telling you where to get it but you understand the reasons right like this is unlicensed fan art lawyers like to send letters these folks that made this uh have a have a real burgeoning business that is not unlicensed fan art but they wanted to send me this because they know how much i love the star wars um and so i am paying them that respect of unboxing this beautiful thing at some later date when i can cover their work uh uh uh without hiding their name i totally will oh nice little swag there that'll go on there we've got some brass parts this i will be honest with you collecting props and uh kits garage kits that's what this is there's called a garage kit um is a never ceasing lesson in disappointment you get really excited about the first pictures of something it arrives and uh it's clearly the 45th casting out of the mold that itself is like a third generation mold that is not the case here here i am seeing a gigantic number of beautiful parts cast to an incredible fidelity just this just this alone the mold for this is a nightmare a nightmare and there's detail on the inside this is resin this is probably somewhat pressure cast into a two-part silicone mold but i can't see any parting lines i'm annoyed by how perfect this part is good god man do you understand how precise this is if we give the serum to those monkeys is no telling what will happen yes that is the opening line from a movie um wow incredible okay have i gotten all the little things i have gotten all the little things oh my goodness oh my goodness the feed plates feed plates hold on we're gonna we're gonna do everything here yeah we're gonna no man we're gonna know like we've never known before we're gonna know like there's null tomorrow feetsies 16 of these guys the folks that sent me this model said that in order to maintain a high fidelity they are redoing the molds for this for every s every 12 castings um two four six eight and sixteen yeah that is all four feet's worth it so what you what you might not know about silicone molds is uh is that the when you cast resin it's an exothermic reaction that means it creates heat that heat helps to boil some of the silicone out of the rubber the the resin itself can also leach silicone out of the rubber suffice to say that when you are cycling a mold that is to say pouring resin in it letting it harden pulling that out pouring more resin in it you're often keeping that mold hot and that'll limit the number of castings you can get out of it there are ways to mitigate this using spray paint or other barrier coats um but for the most part uh you're gonna get maybe a dozen or two great castings out of a mold uh and then it's gonna start to you're gonna start to lose chunks if you buy garage kits i'm sure you've gotten one where there's a little bit of rubber stuck somewhere that is a mold that is slowly deteriorating so these folks are actually retiring their molds every 12 castings which astounds me that is a real commitment um the bottoms of these feet are so pretty i'm gonna have two of the oh yeah all right that's where these are yes that's my mozart um oh yes dude i want to stop doing all the other things on my bench and i want to build this now oh the fronts of the guns yes i think these are hips i'm just gobsmacked by this oh i even can see into the bridge we can do a lit bridge you may start your landing okay we have all those oh man all i want to do is put this together start putting this together unbelievable wow wow just these two parts right there and this has been cast to optimize for weight so it's really impressively light this is important because when you have a model this big uh its its own heaviness can work against it and it can slowly droop over time this is one of the reasons the at-ats that master replicas released were wait wasn't there at yes we're often cast in polystone um because that wouldn't have any creep to it um oh yeah okay oh wow oh yeah okay time for some real knowling [Music] there's like 180 parts in here give or take about 180. let's get you a better view on this action [Music] okay yeah uh something like 100 over 200 parts in this kit let's talk about what makes these castings special um this is a part in which this goes on here and there is a through axle they've cast all the way through the part which means they've installed a hard part in the mold to get these clean castings these tiny fine little panel lines are absolutely perfect there is no loss of detail in the corners and then this is the foot part so there are foot pads that come into here and those also get pins and those are also all pre cast through with their holes that is non-trivial from a casting standpoint and then this drops in here like that dude i mean that's just a magnificent set of castings and the idea that they retire their molds after every 12 castings is kind of mind-blowing um let's look at the real fire though is this piece here hold on there we go um just making a mold of something like this is itself a nightmare every mold maker will tell you getting the plastic this resin to fill the void created by a two-part mold and not lead to any distortions or or wavy parts long flat parts can often be quite wavy there's none of that here and then this part marries to that check this out hold on there so we've got in here we've got gussets that meet and gussets that align and it all clips into place like just that that is two pieces is insanity sauce to me hold on take a look inside because it's fun there we go i mean this is just about as high quality as one could get for a garage kit i've never seen anything quite like it to be fair undercuts look at this there are undercuts here that's the kind of thing that will make you absolutely crazy in a mold and every now and then i can find evidence of a pouring gate but this is really mind-blowing look i genuinely feel bad telling you about a kit like this showing you the pieces of it and uh not telling you where to get it but uh that is the agreement i have with the makers of this beautiful thing um they don't want the lawyers to call them and say stop doing that which i understand to be fair i don't think they're making a ton of dough selling this thing because this is there's so much labor in this i have a hard time imagining how you could make your money back on a retail cost of less than like two or three thousand bucks for a kit like this i'm not kidding almost 200 parts including a whole bunch of metal parts cut to size and dowel pens this the physical labor in this is gargantuan but the makers have told me sent me some wonderful facts about themselves they began their careers in cgi architecture and they launched their own design company just before covet hit they had a successful year but the industry crashed and they uh blended their experience of 3d modeling and their love of model building to create their uh their passion project of high quality models uh they were like i've said so dissatisfied with most of the custom kits they'd purchased um and they started by 3d printing they realized they needed to go deeper they looked at professional collectibles manufacturing wow oh my goodness it's completely poseable this thing is completely poseable it's not like you choose a pose and then lock it into that it's posable wow um they have some really exciting exciting uh things coming and when i can name them and show the things that they're making i totally will um yeah they've asked me to let this stand on its own as a fan art piece without mentioning them or their brand and i will hold to that um what a what a beautiful thing to get to witness i have made models like this in the past professionally it takes a team of people working for weeks to make castings this beautiful it's it's it's really thrilling it's super thrilling oh man i'm gonna go get norm norma's gonna lose his freaking mind when he sees this thing dude thank you for joining me for this show and tell i will rarely do this where i show you something but not tell you where you can get it so thanks for forgiving me right up front and uh
