hey guys it's Adam and I am at San Diego's comic-con and last year tested was lucky enough to get to go visit the set of alien covenant in Sydney Australia and be on set while they were shooting and take a look at some of their incredible costumes one of my heroes Jan T Yates took us on a tour of the costume shop where we got to see my friends at F bfx who build spacesuits for all of Ridley Scott's recent movies like the Martian and Prometheus built the spacesuits for Covenant and there were two kinds there was the big yellow hard kind of spacesuit with joints that they actually 3d printed and covered this on the video and then there was the soft more basic work add a spacesuit and we've got one in the hotel room yeah fog has allowed us to get access to one of these costumes and take a look at it in even greater detail because just getting a tour and being shown by Jan T and Michael moody the pieces that they created for this movie and all the detail that they layered in we only got like half an hour maybe an hour with that suit but here here we can take a look serious tour on some of the incredible detail that these guys put into their work and by these guys I mean the amazing craftspeople at FB FX in conjunction with Gen th and our costume team and Ridley Scott's art Direction team it's really incredible these are the boots these feel completely like actual products but they're custom printed you can see the weyland-yutani logo on the boot as well as a Reebok logo I guess some deal got made at some point we see Reebok we see magnets here so clearly part of the narrative of the film they use the magnets to hold themselves to the outside of the ship everything here is completely custom from the boot shrouds that are screwed in with these Chicago screws to the zippers on the side that has a beautiful beautiful piece it even has lights that change depending on when you're walking I think it goes red for locked and green for you can walk yeah that was literally the most boring part of this suit let's move up we have the backpack and now we start to see some of the incredible detail that FB FX layers in to create a world all these tiny beautiful stickers and etch brass plates this is a GoPro camera and they use some of this footage within the film but they made a custom 3d printed housing with edged brass plates on it it it almost hurts my brain how many different graphic elements they put in these buckles over here these are I believe martin-baker ejection seat buckles these are not off-the-shelf items you can only get these from decommissioned pieces of military hardware I have a few myself I don't know where FB FX gets all of them the interior of this is for the control system they use a full transmitter system for affecting the lights so that they can adjust them on set make the brighter make them less bright make them flicker make them dance animate them in any way that they need and this is beautiful I mean I think this is I think these are parts of a straight parachute harness but I'm not actually positive I can't quite remember did they custom make these I can't quite remember again even on the back on the inside they put labels that says kind of see this clearly was that Tennessee stunt backpack is what it says stunt 2 but it's a whale in Utah look at this this is didn't even need to do this and they just keep on going it's like they're the energizer bunnies of detail okay moving on to the actual suit itself we have some beautiful dimensional fabric that looks like ballistic nylon but it's much lighter weight it's an open weave which is clearly always a problem for actors in spacesuits the the heat of the suit we have so what we have on the sides of the suits imprinted like computer circuitry this is sort of reminiscent of the Martian suit there's a screen printed elements like this on that suit the neck ring is actually functional the helmet locks to the neck ring with a couple of sliders it's not airtight but it is a functional neck ring they also are able to transfer power from the main body suit power start in the backpack but it comes up through the neck ring through two magnet connections into the helmet we have on the gloves let's see these are beautiful parts again custom-made these I'm going to wager our working screens at BFX often in their suits for Prometheus had multiple working screens where they put animation in each single one so the actors are looking and everything you're looking at that is a blinking light it's actually doing something a switches all lights something up the screens all have something animating like the telemetry or the heart rate or whatever is going on and this this this is the piece de resistance of this costume this is one of the most beautiful space helmet I've ever seen for real or for fiction and again we covered this untested but it's really hard to overstate just how much this detail sells when you're up close to it the color choices the fact that the main body of this helmet is actually carbon fiber the green visor okay this is again something I haven't seen and you know you make a movie and they're like what can we do this different everyone's already seen a goal advisor so they did this green metallic visor that's magnificent apparently they had difficulty making sure they were all color matched to each other which is really important but let me show you another hidden detail which you might not have noticed because I didn't for the first like half hour I was looking at this ya know I've spent like the last three hours just kind of like look at this um if you push this button here this lever comes up and it lifts the inner visor that is freakin amazing one from an engineering standpoint but - this is like how real Gemini helmets actually worked they did this kind of locking mechanism they are like speaking to the history of space travel and spacesuit development on this wait wait I'm going to take it even further check out this top light which again that top light is completely harking back to the original top light on John Marlowe's movies designed suits for alien the Cain suit that I built but look at this light it separates and can be adjustable and Aimable so clearly this was like a production request of we want more versatility than the light that only points in one direction the DP probably wants it to be able to point in different directions depending upon the needs of the shot and the special effects team totally delivers that is not something that you might ever notice if you were just looking at this in a museum it's only being able to see this thing up and close you really get to glory in the detail this bit on the back it's actually a functional part of the costume this is an open great 3d printed and then vacuum metallized and painted red but it covers over an intake fans that blows cold air over the actor space FP FX now has so much institutional knowledge and making helmets and keeping actors cool that they're now designing in their own airflow features which is fantastic and it's fantastic for me why because Fox has graciously allowed me to put on this costume not just cover it's beautiful detail for testing but to put it on and wear it out on the floor of San Diego comic-con that's why the green visors so awesome because it will hide my identity when I hit the floor in a beautiful screen-used suit again even though it seems complex all of these engineering decisions were made to augment safety and comfort of the actors and the versatility of being able to use this on set the production has all sorts of restrictions and requirements that you sometimes differ scene to scene actor to actor alright great it's like one of those in Foggia tears it's like that's a guy from Cleveland here wait check this out check out these zipper pulls the zipper pull says wailing yutani impress the bread leather that's not bad that actually moves quite well perfect awesome alright next back back again this is to distribute the weight of the backpack and the helmet across more of the actress body than just their neck [Music] oh you've already got power going in the [Music] it's amazing how well it snaps in like rumbles there here we go this is so much the best part shoot shoot Deuteronomy I'm in my happy place now oh yeah I feel it alright they've made a totally silent fan / sound that's impressive again at the FX controls the lighting in their suits with remote controlled transmitters that they custom build for this suits yet don't know what's nob does what we're trying to figure out how to make this work alright but the fan works yeah and on the fan works on the fan is also very exciting you stand in both senses of the word here I go buddy I feel super comfortable this is maybe one of the most comfortable space suits I've ever worn I guess don't have to yell very loud because the Mexicans I'm sorry yes all right well gentlemen please shall we do a customer [Music] [Music] okay yes I am [Music] I'm good or [Music] hello [Music] [Music] Oh [Music] [Music] it's run [Music] [Applause] [Music] that was awesome effect that this is by far the most comfortable spacesuit I've worn on the floor as you can still see I'm sweating bullets but it's not nearly as bad as previous spacesuit for that warrant I got made like about fifty times you know people just kept on coming up and be like you must be Adam you must be Adam [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] it's awesome where these customs it's also to take them off so there you have it I have just completed walking the floor in the alien covenant spacesuit I went to the alien covenant experience I got to see what they're showing on the floor and that is my third and final cosplay walk of San Diego comic-con 2017 I am now going to get out of the suit take a shower and take about a thousand pictures of this [Applause] [Music] [Applause]
