Actions in Combat: Reaction - D&D 5E Tutorial

welcome to roll initiative where the rules from Dungeons and Dragons fifth edition become clear this week's clarification actions in combat reactions we start with our hero Corwin he is in combat with the Goblin and it is the goblins turn he is scared and goes to run away as soon as he moves out of our hero's threat range our hero uses his reaction to make an opportunity attack to clarify a reaction is an instant response to a trigger of some kind which can occur on your or someone else's turn when you take a reaction you cannot use it again until the start of your next turn in this case the triggering event is the Goblin leaving Corwin's threat range the response is the opportunity attack now our hero cannot use his reaction again until the start of his next turn on this same turn the Goblin wishes to run back towards our hero to attack then run out of Corwin's threat range again in this case our hero cannot make an opportunity attack as he no longer has a reaction to use let's look at another example in this situation Corwin is a wizard with the shield spell prepared it is the goblins turn again this time he's going to snarl and attack our hero with his sword our hero's armor glass is 17 but the goblin rolls in 18 which would normally be a hit however Corwin chooses to use his reaction to cast shield which increases his armor class by 5 this causes the goblin to miss his attack if you would like to see more hints and explanations of the rules subscribe and send me your requests also be sure to follow us on twitter at D&D roll rules and click on the link below to visit our website which is your one-stop source for D&D 5th edition rules clarification thank you for watching
