[Music] so [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] hey cultures it's pam heller welcome to acupult live on facebook happy wednesday to you and thanks for joining us today hey miss christina is in the house how are you my friend i'm all right a little stressed but you know okay so how's the house thing coming good we drilled new holes in the brand new ceiling that we just put in so but tell us the story that tim did not use the fabric rule of measure twice cut once yeah so we were measuring and we measured a certain length and tried to figure out half of it and just tried to do math in our brains instead of actually like using our computers that are in our pocket um yeah we measured about an inch and a half too far one way when drilling three different lights but it's fine it's going to be beautiful it's fine it's fine everything's fine just gotta measure twice cut one okay and the most important question is did you get the sewing room done because how many projects do you have left just two i just need to get back that's all i need to do and then okay somebody please come to christina's house and help her we just need to go to the fabric store together okay we'll go make me buy fabric so that i do it oh i'm all down for that i'm all down for that okay well first of all we have no baby at the heller house i know last week i thought we were gonna dawson's laughing this is not a laughing matter dawson this is serious thanks but today but taylor showed me that every day for a week so i'm to the point where i don't believe him and do you want to hear the saddest thing so monday was our 35th wedding anniversary ray and i've been married 35 years i know to each other the same person um and we had planned to go to hawaii because that's the one state i have not been to okay but i don't know this ray's been there twice and i don't know how he's been there without me but he's been there twice anyway um but you know hawaii is close because i don't know if you know this there's a pandemic um and you have to quarantine for 14 days so we went to sonic and had hawaii shave no that's so ice you're making me have the situation yeah he made a great dinner and it was fun so all right okay where is everybody watching from today okay first of all um jace in kansas city we're so glad you're watching and diane has an eight inch cube and never opened it today sweetie we're going to help you with that okay i always wondered christina why nobody ever from hawaii is on our call and then i realized it's like oh dark 30 there oh is it i don't know what the yeah there's like a five-hour time change they're very much snoozing in hawaii okay oh thank you cindy for the happy anniversary oh lots of people have anniversaries coming in in august yeah dee said that her 52 anniversary was yesterday yay see 57 years good job bonnie okay some of us haven't been alive that long like all of these people okay i have been alive that long okay here's the picture of the day you ready okay these are my sewing scissors christina how many pairs of sewing scissors do you have my favorite three three and do you cut anything besides fabric with them no no that is the rule okay so our question of the day is are you ready how many pairs of sewing scissors do you have quilters now christina is going to keep track she and leslie are checking our comments so in the comments section we want you to type be honest the number of sewing scissors that you have and christina is going to kind of keep track to see who has like the most and what that number is and then i've asked these young kids here in the dream studio with me um how many pairs they think our quilters have and the number is going to be so funny okay so that's what now last week did you have so much fun last week on dog week christina did you get a dog not yet and did anybody post a picture of the dog you want i don't think so i didn't see any little italian greyhounds but the picture that we're getting the name pasta or al dente is my favorite okay so here's some pictures we ask you to send pictures here's our furry friends okay so lori t from iowa this is the cutest picture look at him they're just snuggling all snuggled up in the things and guaranteed from maryland look how pretty her dog is you guys are so cute they have great pictures okay is this not every dog in the world sleeping in the middle of the bed pearl who weighs like eight pounds and is our cat she sleeps in the middle of the bed and it's like moving a truck to get her out of the way i swear they can somehow like put on more weight as they're just sitting there and when they walk on you and cats walking you it's like oh right there but pretty soon it will make you national cat day so don't worry okay and last we have betty from arizona look at her dogs are so cute thank you for sharing your puppies with you hey with us and hey don't forget share your pictures of your sewing scissors some of you have a collection i know okay now today you want to share today's video for the chance to win okay christina is this right we are going to give away a nine inch cube we are to one lucky winner yes yes one person that shares oh my gosh a nine inch cube you guys that's such a great price and why did we choose the nine inch cube because it fits with all of our cutters including our go me and you can use it with the studio cutter with the appropriate adapter nine inches is a great numbers great size block okay so since some of you don't know what the cube is today we're going to talk about our cube system so as i've traveled and met our customers and been to quilt shops people ask me all the time what is a cube why do i need a cube what size cube should i buy first okay so we're going to answer all of those questions today and i'm going to show you how all of the pieces in the cube work together now listen i know some of you already know how to use our cube system so there is no eyeball rolling okay because i promise you today i'm going to teach you something that you didn't know about the cube okay so just let me get there all right so first of all the cube comes in five sizes a six inch finish block eight nine ten inch finish block and a twelve inch finish block remember the cube system has eight geometric shapes all of our geometric shapes have that quarter inch seam allowance built in so if dawson says to me hey pam i need a five inch square i'm gonna say dawson do you need a five inch square or a five inch finished square those are two different dies he's shaking his head he said yep okay but remember the shapes are the same in every cube they just come in different sizes together how many mix and match blocks do they make christina 72 72 is the correct answer and where would you find those patterns on accuquilt.com accuquilt.com are they free or do we charge them ten dollars a pattern they're free they are free always always all right so we're going to start by giving you a code okay now listen normally i'm so mad because cody doesn't make the code pam said so one day that will happen okay i promise you but we're gonna give you 30 off a cube today as we talk about mastering the cube and the grid system so the code for the day is grid grid 30 30. and just for today until 12 minutes because people in hawaii are still asleep we do have a viewer from hawaii lisa she said she's watching from bed in hawaii oh lisa thank you for watching you are the winner today i love that our lone hawaii viewer i'm so proud of you okay i would lay in bed and watch i would watch too from bed okay so 20 or 30 off okay grid 30 and that includes our cubes and guess what our companion sets so maybe you already have the cube and you've been noodling on should i get that companion set should i not today's the day you should okay because tomorrow it's not the code ends at midnight all right so we're going to use um the 12 shapes today i cut them out of felt for my 12 inch cube why did i cut them out for my 12 inch cube do you think dawson so people can see them they're really big if i use the six inch cube they're so small okay some of us have old eyes see i didn't know you were asking about the size i thought you were asking about why to use the dye oh yes okay good call he did he had this panic look on his face okay he's just running the camera don't talk to him okay all right so the most important thing you need to know is that the grids the cube is based on the grid system which are a four patch system okay so in every cube shape number one is a square you okay over there shape number one is a square four of these sewn together in this case makes a 12 inch block okay so that four patch system don't think in your quilting head i'm getting the eight inch cube it's gonna have eight inch blocks there's some sewing involved all right just go with me on this okay so shape number one is the square all right next is shape number two shape number two in every cube are smaller squares oh look at this okay here on my little board all right so now how many of shape number two do i need to make a 12 inch block 16 good doing math on a wednesday okay now everything in the cube all of the shapes come back to equal shape number one all right so in theory could you have a four patch within your four patch block of course you can there's no die police okay nobody's coming to christina's house and saying i'm sorry you can only do this kind of a block okay when you're making up your own blocks go for it okay so shape number two are smaller squares now um chelsea producer what shape is this just basic shape like pretend you're in kindergarten triangle good job [Applause] okay this young group they are a little off today okay i don't know what's happening if it is something fancy it's a half square triangle and how do you know that it's a half square triangle because i told you okay that's how you know but actually half square triangles you're going to take and you're going to cut them at that diagonal right now what did we build in because we love you yes we took off the dog ears and from here to here is a quarter inch seam allowance you're welcome now here's my question for you if i took shape number one and cut it at a diagonal and sewed it together would it equal a square yep what size square i got nothing okay because accu-cool did all the math for me because i studied history in college okay so it makes the square but it's not the right square right so you need a half square triangle we added that quarter inch seam allowance if we sew these two pieces together they would equal shape number one all right all right now shape number four in every cube chelsea graphics what shape is this she wins she has a cheat sheet she's reading from her screen but she is indeed correct so look at this okay so we have four of them sewn together equals shape number one right and hey listen accu code they were so smart they made quarter square triangles number four so you would remember okay i know all right sometimes we get it right now shape number five in every single cube are small half square triangles okay now these are kind of small and it takes a whole bunch of them to make a block it's kind of like our facebook live group we are like the facebook live fireballs okay together we are rock stars together and we do other things did you know that we have other jobs besides facebook live okay so here is christina and here's chelsea producer and here's nick and here's pam and here's chelsea graphics and here's dawson and here's marissa and leslie they're off-site but they're still part of our team okay so shape number five is like the workhorse of the cube system kind of like our facebook live team the workhorses okay so how many of these do you need to make shape number one yeah eight how many do you need to make a 12 inch square 32 that is so much sewing okay but i promise we are worth it and shape number five actually makes other shapes become new shapes what shapes do you say pam well let me show you okay can you still see down here dawson okay shape number six is what shape dawson good job okay they all went to kindergarten it's all i'm proud of all of them okay but this is actually different christina do you know what kind of square it is it is a square on point okay so what's the difference between a square and a square and point well a square you measure the sides and they're all equal the same on square and point but a square is meant to live on the flat side kind of like a sofa square lay in there flat watching netflix okay this is all of us in quarantine we are shape number one my living room last night because that was me just flat flat okay shape number six is like ballerina squares they're meant to live on their tippy toes okay so that's how they're meant to live now what shape do i need to put around it to equal shape number one some of the facebook live team has to help so we're going to have nick and marissa and leslie and chelsea graphics whose boyfriend is the best boyfriend because he always comments about what a great job the graphics are okay and now what does it equal shape number one ta-da okay now before we go to shape number seven christina how's our scissors looking oh gosh i'm seeing a lot of people are inheriting scissors from family members so some from their grandmothers their aunts i think the most i've seen so far someone thinks they have 35 35 at least 35 said sue okay who is that person do you know two sue okay all right so far sue is the winner okay so now shape number seven in every single cube because mike woke up this morning and said gosh i hope there's a parallelogram in the cube um we put in a parallelogram ta-dah okay first of all this is the word of the day use it three times parallelogram all right what this is what i call a directional die okay so we're here in omaha nebraska eight hours west of us is denver eight hours east of us is chicago for the record eight hours south of us is st louis and eight hours north of us is canada christina did you know i can't go to canada i did know you can't go to canada right now i didn't want to go until they told me i couldn't go i know now i want to go every day okay so if i want my parallelograms to go to chicago and have lunch at giordano's pizza i'm going to stack my fabric all facing up but if i want have to go to denver and have lunch with the rodizio grill and have to go to giordano's i'm going to fan fold my fabric back and forth okay dawson where would you rather go rodizio grill in denver giordano's pizza in chicago i've heard good things about jared best best pizza ever okay okay so here is shape number seven so what's the shape we need on the outside of it because this parallelogram is just going to sit there we want it to be a rectangle what's the shape we need we need some of our facebook live team okay so we're gonna put me and dawson okay all right now here's something that i took me like a year of teaching this class when we first came out with the cubes to realize that if you take two if you take chelsea producer and christina and sew them together they equal shape number two i love it when the math works okay and then what's our last shape it is a rectangle okay because when you sew these three pieces together what shape did they make a rectangle there's some terminology you need to know this is shape seven it's just an element within the block within the within your quilt if you add the half square triangles on the outside it now becomes a unit a rectangle unit and then you're going to sew it together with enough another rectangle to make a block did you know those terms okay all right don't forget to share because christina what are we giving away nine inch cube so you can use it in any cutter and what's the number of scissors somebody have more than 35 i'm seeing 50 from eileen eileen good job okay all right so quilters it's super important to recognize that in your cube you have big squares and little squares big half square triangles and little half square triangles because when we talk about the grid system you're going to be able to change the size of your block based on the shapes in the cube now did you know okay none of our none of our facebook team knew this what two shapes you need to make flying geese because did you know they're flying geese in every cube okay christina what are the two shapes do you know there are so we're going to take christina and chelsea producer and what's the other one i think you need to call on someone else oh he answered one how about quarter square triangles oh okay let's go with that sounds right okay so look at this ta-da in every cube there's flying geese did you know that okay now how big is this flying geese huh wouldn't it be amazing if we had a rectangle so we could figure it out oh wait shape number eight is that rectangle so in the 12 inch cube it's three inches high by six inches wide in the six inch cube it is one and a half inches high by three inches wide which is super tiny okay so those are the eight shapes and the cubes ta-da okay so people ask me all the time um like why is accu-quote better okay you first of all cut a square on point with a rotary cutter i don't even know how to do that math half square triangles our little facebook live triangles those are so hard because you got a strip and then you cut a square and then you mark it and you sew it and you trim it and you cut it just put fabric on a die okay so much faster it's going to save you time it's going to save you agony and grief okay so now we're going to talk about oh i'm gonna show you a quilt okay dawson's gonna help me because what else do you have to do come on okay here we go oh let's not break the set someone will be crabby at us okay so this is a great cube it's called epic mix and match sampler okay and what we did dawson was we took all the 6 8 9 and 12 inch cubes and put them together to make blocks that work together but the coolest part about this this is for our good friend tammy miller um she loves this quilt because it it's 3d right i feel like don't you think like quilters spend so much time just like quilting things down yeah so what do you like about this one which block do you like i like this block here yeah i really like that they used all of the different block sizes yeah yeah but i had a quilt when i was young that had things like this hanging off oh cool so it's kind of nostalgic for me there see this shape right here flying geese okay will you pull this back yes and then we'll take that quilt right off all right because we have more to show you we have a trunk show for you today i'm so excited don't forget you're gonna take thirty dollars off any cube or companion set to all of our facebook live viewers for today remember up until twelve midnight central central central time i don't know where that is but that's where we are is in central time um have a couple questions from our viewers hi viewers um genie wants to know what would be the best cube for a beginner like the best size okay so gina i'm going to tell you get a ready set go when it comes with an eight inch cube okay eight inch is a great number the mouth works really easy works with the two and a half inch strip die yeah okay and did somebody else have a question um no but susan said that she knows why we were probably all the young folks are a little bit crazy today why is that please full corn moon last night a full corn moon here in nebraska explains everything i wonder if joyce dressed up for the full corn moon joyce in her office she's the biggest cornhusker fan on the planet i hope she did okay now we're going to talk oh what's our number of scissors um erica peterson says she has 200. yes erica peterson i believe that i think we need a picture of that i believe that's probably true erica peterson okay all right so now we're going to talk about companion sets so remember the cube has eight dies the companion sets have four dies but they have to work together okay and they have to be the same size if you have the eight inch cube you need the eight inch companions nine inch cube nine inch companions it's not like your friends in real life that have different sizes okay they have to work be the same all right so let's talk about corners um the first shape is this shape oh gosh chelsea producer what shape is that do you know it is not but there is one in the cube i'll wait and ask you that this is a chisel shape yeah it was close okay when i show you the trapezoid they're not anything alike it's the corn moon gosh yeah we can there's a die for that dawson did you hear them you can make a trapezoid i'm like yeah there's a die for that okay chisel just like the parallelogram i've used it three times by the way um if i want them all to go to chicago and have lunch at giordano's i'm going to face them up if i want have to go to denver i'm going to fan fold here's what i'm going to tell you every time you make a block that has a parallelogram or a chisel in it make a test block so you know how to lay those pieces out okay and then what's the shape that i need right here on the top we need dawson we need dawson's help shape number five our powerhouse to make a rectangle right the next shape in the companion set corners is this shape this is called signature block this is the die that you're going to use if you're creating like a wedding gift or a baby shower gift or graduation gift where people are going to sign a message okay you would make this like a solid light color okay and then what's the shape we need on the outside to equal shape number one yes we need nyx help and chelsea graphics okay all right now the last shape in the companion set corners is this shape and this is sometimes referred to as uh the square in the corner because in the non-accu-court world where you have to cut things with a rotary cutter and go crazy you would cut a square and then you would cut a smaller square and then you would mark it and sew it in trim it or you can just use the half rectangle okay so this is shape number 11. it makes bow ties which is super fun for the summer because people get married okay i i watched a couple of virtual weddings like on zoom this year it was way crazy did you christina did you have any you did or did you do a shower i went to a real life like in-person wedding this saturday but it was all very distance we all had masks on so it was all very yeah but it was still fun we do have a comment um from phyllis she says technically as a former math teacher that chisel shape is a trapezoid oh smack okay chelsea's like doing the happy dance factor math teachers they are the bane of my existence that's why i studied history thank you for telling us okay all right so half square triangles this is the companion set corners and i think we have a quilt to show you right okay dawson here we go look at you this is the wrong one it's okay it's okay this one is okay this is also the wrong one ah it's okay oh it's hanging behind christina hey can we show christina can we show christina yeah so behind her see those are all the shapes from the companion set corners cool i knew it was somewhere all right thank you sweetie okay the corn moon i'm blaming it all right yep every day okay so now last um quilters asked me how can our iq quilt save me time 90 faster than with rotary cutters or scissors what does that mean well it means what used to take you an hour to cut out you can cut out in less than 10 minutes with our ghost system okay it's going to be accurate safe easy to use it's perfect all right let's talk about the companion set angles you ready the first shape is this shape this is an isosceles triangles folks okay it is not meant to be an equilateral triangle treat it like an isosceles triangle okay and what's the shape we need on the outside to equal shape number one okay well this i can't believe the chisel is a trapezoid is that true somebody google that i know she's already back there okay this is called okay accu cool calls these triangle no square sides i call them half rectangles because what kind of shape is it a rectangle did we cut it in half yes did we add the quarter inch seam allowance and cut off the dog ears of course we did okay now this die is also somewhat of a directional die but what you need to remember is that when you're folding the fabric back and forth you have to fold it back and forth in even numbers if you stack all the pieces facing up this is what happens shape here it is 14. it's going to go right here it's beautiful look how cool that is but watch what what happened here if you only stack it facing up you're only going to have the left side and you will be so crabby many times yes so fan folded back and forth here we go all right and don't forget today the code is grid 30 i'm not even mad about it because we're giving you 30 off cubes and companion sets today only works for cubes and companions only worse for cubes in comparison you have to have those in your cart for it to work yes just so that's clear yes and there is no corn dye no not yet and there's not a moon die i wish there was a pickup truck die too okay all right what's next oh hey so shape 15. this is um the kite shape this is one of my favorite stash busting tools if you own the six or the eight inch cube and you have charm squares in your stash you know who you are okay bust those up make them all different and then what's the shape you need on the outside yeah shape number 14 and how are you going to fold them fan fold them back and forth to equal shape number one okay what's the number of scissors um i'm still saying that 200 i think that's the biggest 200 is amazing number of scissors someone said they may not have the most scissors but they probably have the oldest scissors because they have a pair of like victorian era scissors i know i want a picture of that too yes share your scissors with us okay and then the last shape chelsea what is this trapezoid dawson there's a die for that okay and we're gonna add dawson to the front and then what's the shape you need on the outside yep shape number three what kind of triangle is this dawson very good oh i'm so glad we've learned some things today okay so this is the shapes of the cubes and the companion sets all right now let's talk oh we have another quilt come on dustin this is the right one okay here we go this is our companion set angles so here's that triangle in a square here's the kite shape okay can you find a trapezoid a trapezoid yes there's one here good job excellent see or there's one right here and yeah you were gonna say something no i was asking if they could see it because i think i was in the way oh yeah cool all right hold that back for us thank you all right so now let's talk real quick about the grid system okay because the cube system is based on the grid system we don't usually call it a two by two grid right um we usually call it a four patch but i'm going to show you okay we're now showing you blocks from the eight inch cube we've moved from the 12 inch this is the eight okay so this is from the eight inch cube so two columns two rows we call it a four patch right and this equals an eight inch block now here's my question for you if you own the eight inch cube can you make an eight inch block everyone say yes corn moon we can never have another facebook live after a corn moon okay we just have to change it okay here's my next question if you have the eight inch cube can you make a 12 inch block everyone say yes yes how can we do that quilters well what we're going to do is we're going to change the size of the grid so look at this so now i have three columns and three rows and look at this so if this is a four inch square because it came from our eight inch cube four and four and four is twelve four and four and four is twelve so now you can create bigger blocks using your cube a perfect example of that is this block anybody know what this is christina do you know what black that is ohio star hey folks from ohio you're welcome i'm glad there's a star for you okay so we can make this with our cube what shapes do you think we need quilters just two shape one and shape four which are quarter square triangles okay so now we've taken the cube system and created a three by three grid now i tell cultures all the time how to make bigger blocks but did you know that you can make smaller blocks with your cubes this was like life-changing when i learned how to do this okay so this is our friendship star this could be christina and our star our friendship star i love it i know okay now remember i told you the cube has big elements and little elements so we use the smaller elements of the eight inch cube so this square is a two inch finished square how big is our block six inches is that right did we do that mouth right we did so now i've taken my eight inch cube and make it a six inch block and i can take my eight inch cube and i can make a 12 inch block and a 16 inch block but we're going to talk about the nine inch cube today because if you had the six inch cube and the nine inch cube you could take the six inch cube and make a four and a half inch block did you know that how big is the finished shape number one in the nine inch cube hey by the way shape number one in the cube catches charm squares for days five inch square but it finishes to what four and a half inches so you can make a nine patch within a four patch with those two cubes it's amazing okay making bigger blocks with your cube annette wants to know how do i make a 12 inch cube to make an 18 inch block a 3x3 grid yeah so use the bigger elements okay yeah because shape number one in the 12 inch cube is what a six inch square okay good questions okay now i'm going to show you something that just blows my mind every time i think about it okay you ready so with the eight inch cube i'm now going to show you this is a cool block this is called hens and chicks okay ray said to me one day i was talking about this block and he said oh i get it i said what do you get there's nothing to get and he said no i get it hens and chicks he goes like chicks are the young quilters and hens are the and then he stopped which is why we've been married 35 years okay all right so now let's do some math i use the eight inch cube this is the smallest element within this block this is actually a five by five grid so ready one two three four five one two three four five how big is this block 10 inches so i've taken the eight inch cube and made a six inch block and an eight inch block and a ten inch block and a twelve inch block wouldn't it be amazing if there were cubes all those same sizes oh wait there are okay so when people say to me oh i have the eight inch cube i can only make eight inch blocks they say that all the time i said no no no no so now when you think of the cubes you have what kind of cubes do you want to go with it so like the 9 inch cube works great with the 12 and the 6 and the 8 and the 12. 10 is my favorite cube because i don't have to do math it's all equal okay all right christina what what's the last number i'm still saying that 200. okay all right now before we pick a winner so don't forget to share we're going to have a little trunk show with you okay dawson and i are going to show you some really cool quilts that we made with the cube system okay and somewhere i don't know where in the comments or something somebody will post something about the patterns because you will all say to me pam what patterns were there okay hey and don't forget our facebook live videos live on facebook so if you forget how the cube system works just come back and watch it again okay justin here we go good job okay you stand over there my friend okay now listen you stand over there we're gonna pull these down corn moon okay okay so first of all we're going to talk about this little one right here so this is pencils okay so this oh he says okay so this is that tiny little um square from the square in the corner and here's our rectangles look how cute that is because some people are going to school oakley's going virtually but some kids are okay we're gonna pull this down and we're just gonna gently lay it here don't worry it's clean down here okay all right so christina tell us about this quilt um it has trapezoids which i had to learn how to sew i didn't sew this one but i sewed this pattern with different fabrics but yes this is called spin fresh and this is actually one of my favorite patterns because yes it has trapezoids and you had to learn how to sew the half square triangles to them okay and then you made the other side look how pretty this is so once i get the background please just take this one home and call it yours and then we can sew i think someone might have a problem with that i don't know tell leslie it's okay okay this is my favorite favorite one that i wanted to show you so we used our six inch cube to make a ten inch block ta-da okay so think about that so look we have that triangle in a square we have squares and we use the larger elements and the smaller elements to make this okay okay this one we got to kind of hold up because this is our love notes one isn't it isn't this cute look christina really likes this i love the 12 inch piece quilt it's so pretty so see it looks like a heart okay there's a die for all of this dawson okay okay this is my bucket list quilt for next year so you needed two cubes you need the six inch cube and the 12 inch cube and their companion angles to make this it's called something kite i don't know it's in the pattern you'll you'll know okay but i love it because it's modern and it has really cool lines and i would make it out of grunge okay and then here's our last one i'll get the one on the back thank you crazy kite throw there see christina knew our good friend k england who lives in
