hey everybody its mr. Greg here from the kindergardens motorsport and tonight I'm super excited to walk you through our research based classroom proven ADC boot camp APC boot camp was created about four or five years ago because we were tired of the letter a week that our curriculum was providing and we knew that if we gave our kids access to the letters and sounds in the first 26 days of school that their reading in their writing would improve so that's how we came up with the idea to do ABC boot camp ABC boot camp is 26 letters in 26 days so basically what we do is we introduce a letter and sound each day for 26 days at the end of the 26 days we move on to word building and CBC words and we really start hitting the using the sounds to build words and to read and write so tonight what I'm going to do is I'm going to walk you through all of the pieces of ABC's boot camp and explain to you how ABC boot camp works but first I want to share a little bit of research and a little bit of data with you so ABC boot camp is based on the research of the law of ten to twenty four memory six which basically says the optimal time the optimal learning time for a skill or a set of skills is 10 to 20 percent of the time that you want your students to remember that skill so if we break that down into a school year a school year is approximately 180 days so 10 to 20 percent of 180 equals about eighteen to thirty seven percent what falls in the middle of eighteen to thirty seven percent twenty-six so the research tells us that 26 days or a BC boot camp is the optimal time to learn letters and sounds so we took that research and we wanted to know how is a BC boot camp performing in classrooms across the country so in a blinded study of over 200 classrooms across all demographics and class sizes rural schools urban schools we came up with an average of 19 students per class and the data from that case study shows that uppercase letter recognition went from 26% pre bootcamp to 84% post/abc bootcamp for lower case letters it was 26% pre bootcamp and 79% post bootcamp for sound recognition it was 16% pre ABC bootcamp and 79% post/abc bootcamp so that is tremendous growth in letters and sounds in just 26 days so that proves the effectiveness of ABC bootcamp and this is something these numbers are numbers that I was seeing in my classroom using ABC bootcamp and so the numbers are it just confirms what I was seeing with ABC bootcamp in my classroom which also features 95 percent DLL student so now what I would like to do is walk you through each of the pieces of ABC bootcamp and give you a quick overview of how it works in the classroom so we're going to start with assessment so before we start ABC bootcamp we do an assessment we do our pre assessment so this gives us our baseline data and in order to do that we use es GI and so this is included and you're in DC bootcamp this slide tells you all about ESPI and how we use it so we use es GI to assess lowercase letters uppercase letters we identify the sound and we also identify the sounds and picture so we give our kids for assessments prior to bootcamp then we reassess with es GI at day 13 so in the middle of ABC bootcamp and then we do a final assessment at the end of ABC bootcamp to get our final numbers so we do three assessments using the SDI pretty bootcamp the middle of ABC boot camp and post/abc boot camp prior to starting bootcamp we send home a parent letter this is an editable parent letter that's included ABC boot camp so you can edit the letter to fit your dates and times and what you're doing with ABC boot camp in your classroom so basically it just explains to families what we're doing for 26 days we're going to be learning the letters of the alphabet and the sounds of those letters it explains how ABC bootcamp work and has a little bit of the research behind it it also asks for parent health and so the way the parents help is we ask our students to bring in objects for every letter of the alphabet so this is important especially for your e ll students because it gives that real world connection and gives them a concrete tangible example of those letters and sounds so we include a very comprehensive list of ideas for each of the letters so the parents have ideas of what to send in so you could send in apples for a for F you can send in a football for P you could send in a pickle so that just gives handsome ideas of things that they can send in then we get to the mini lesson of ABC boot camps and this is really kind of the meat of ABC boot camp and these are the circle maps and so included in ABC boot camp you're going to get 26 letters that look like this to create your circle map so this is what the circle map looks like so the way the circle maps work is we introduce the sound first so I would tell my students this is at what sound ask what sounds and what sound ask and there's a lot of repetition so that they're repeating the sound and we focus on the sound first because we want them to focus on the sound then we ask the question how do you spell app and that's when we bring in the letter name this helps them make that connection between sounds and letters when they're writing so what sound app how do you spell at a then the students generates the words for the circle map so it asked my students can anybody think of a word that starts with the sound Act almost always the first one they come up with is Apple so they would say Apple I would say Apple what sound they would say at Apple what sounds add how do you spell act and they would say a so it's safe Apple starts with app does it go in a circle map yes so then the teacher draws the Apple and I say what sound act how do you spell at a that I would write the a and then I will spell the rest of the letters for them P PL e Apple and they would repeat apples Apple what sounds at we would continue as we continue to come up with words and add those to our circle map for the vowels we only focus on the short vowel sound for ABC bootcamp when we're finished with all of our words on a circle map we go back and read all of the words ambulance X app Apple what sound at what sound at how do you spell at a so that's the circle map that's really that mini lesson that's the meat of a DC bootcamp these circle maps are then displayed in the classroom so that the students can reference them during a DC bootcamp and beyond following the circle maps we move on to our silly hats so the silly hats are an extension of that sound and what it does is it gives the students fine motor practice at the beginning of the year gives them lots of practice with directions and listening and following directions and their cutting skills so there are 52 hats included in a DC bootcamp there are two hats for every letter and they're differentiated so we have them designed so one of the hats requires no assembly you simply cut out the hat you color it you cut it out you glue it on your sentence strip and you're done the second hat requires a little bit of assembly it's a little more challenging so what we found with the hack is not only do they give us lots of classroom practice but it helps make that connection to home so on the students wear the hats home the pants can talk to them about what they learned talk about their hat the sound and we found that it helps get the kids excited and eases their transition into the school year so here's an example of one of our hats this would be deep for the letter J for just and this is one that required no assembly so we color the Jeep we cut it out and glue it on a Simpson strips and then we wear it then we have our student circle map so this is a student version of the larger circle map that we did whole group these students circle maps can be done whole group or they work very well in small group settings so I use my circle map my student circle map books in small groups so I have my kids come over we reviewed the sound we review the letter and then we try to come up with either the same words that are on our circle map or we kind of come up with different words we draw the pictures and we write the words using our sounds very similar process to the whole group circle map this is just more of a targeted practice for kids and small groups and again it can be done in whole group so I always have mine pre-made so I copy all the pages staple them together and they're ready to go for the kids and so we just go through each page just like we would do a letter a day we work on our student looks every day then we do handwriting so we have our handwriting bootcamp and this is when we explicitly model and teach how to form each letter and so within ABC bootcamp there are two styles of handwriting included you get manuscripts and you get the million so both of those are included so whichever one works for what your district or school requires so this is again an explicit lesson so I model how to form each letter then we we trace into the kids right so that's handwriting bootcamp then we bring in a little bit more art into ABC boot camp and we do our letter art and so with letter art you get 26 letters diet letters print them on cardstock or construction paper and then you can decorate the letters to look like apples for a or cookies for C and so this is something that can be done whole group but it's also really cool if you give it to your students and let them work on it individually and let them create their own letter art for each letter so I would give my kids examples so for a we might do apples we might do ants we might do an alligator and then let's the students be creative and make their own letter art you also receive some editable dog tags in your ABC boot camp so they look like this so what we do is every time we learn a letter so each day we learn the letters of students earn the dog tag for that letter and so we put yarn on it and make it to their earning necklaces so they end up with 26 dog tags because we learned 26 letters these are editable so you can type students names on there if you want and or you can make them say whatever you want so the students love to get their little dog tags and would have been proudly with their hats at the end of the 26 days when we've completed ABC boot camp you earn your certificate and these are also editable so you can go in and put your students names you put your name the date you can even add your school if you want so students get their ABC boot camp certificate to show that they've completed ABC boot camp I was copy mine on green paper to go with our army theme and then at the end of the 26 days we celebrate that we've wanted our letters and sounds we celebrate all of our hard work in learning those letters and sounds with ABC boot camp and we host an ABC boot camp fashion show and the way this works is that every child gets a vest made out of a grocery bag they look their best every child is assigned a letter for their best and you included a negative bootcamp you get your labels for the best the letters are assigned randomly there's really no rhyme or reason it's just kind of wipe out the vest and they're assigned to the student then we give them about a week including a weekend to take the best home and decorate their vests with their families so this child has a letter R so they decorated it with pictures of words that started with R so they work on these at home I always have does the due date for these a couple of days before ABC boot camp fashion show so any students who couldn't do it at home or who couldn't find pictures we have a couple of days built into where we can help them finish their vest at home of course there's also a letter to go home this is also editable so you can put in your own date for the fashion show any of the information that you would like to include let the families know what the fashion show is how it works and how they can participate so the kids model their vest and what we do is we go out into the hallway at school and we put down some red paper we might get our runway and we play those my friend Donna and the students get to walk the runway modeling their ABC bootcamp fashion show and this really is a highlight of our ABC boot camp for the kids and it's always amazing to watch the kids get out there and you can see that confidence you can see them having a lot of fun and they're so proud of their vests and all that they've learned during ABC boot camp and finally included in ABC boot camp are 11 black line literacy centers for working on letters and sounds so you've got letter matching the centers include recording sheets that are differentiated so you can do different things with your recording sheet so all kinds of literacy centers puzzles just to give your kids that independent practice working on their letters and sounds so that is ABC boot camp that's how it works in our classroom if you're interested in ABC boot camp you can check it out on p display teachers you can also check out our website to kindergarten some motorsport comm click on Resource Center and we have a page dedicated to ABC boot camp with all of the details of ABC boot camp with videos of ABC boot camp in action and the research and the data that we have provided for ABC boot camp also ABC boot camp is available in four different themes so we have the original Army theme we have superheroes Safari and monster themes available the content and the themes is exactly the same everything is included the only thing that's different would be the scene so again you can check those out on teachers pay teacher's you can go to the chaotic smooth or calm click on resource center and get all of the information on ABC boot camp thank you
