and here sits 1983 ford f-250 got the 460 big block in it we're gonna see if we can get her running today gotta make it down this driveway yeah we'll be fine we'll just have to pick her up a little bit turn the lift kit on here which means we now have no suspension oh we're doing all right as long as we ain't got no oil coming out from underneath us hey that wasn't too bad worthless old travel all front end now there's a tractor oh barely made that well well what do we have here good thing i had this in four wheel drive where we might got stuck pretty sure knocked the top off of that hill right there graded her down a little bit we're doing the teeter-totter number and here sits 1983 ford f-250 got the 460 big block in it we're gonna see if we can get her running today it's been sitting down here for close to 15 years we don't really exactly remember fast wind uh but she's full of junk we're gonna have to clean out for sure he's in it damn right that's better than having to feel that saw blade i don't know what it was it sounded like a saw blade here's some more keys hanging on her there we go so i say first thing we do get her kind of cleaned out and then especially with the key being in it uh maybe see if we can get her popped into neutral and pulled up out of this stuff that way we ain't got to work right here in this tree quick little back story on this truck this truck was my grandpa's he used it to pull pretty much everything travel trailer campers uh we hauled a lot of tractors to tractor shows and we uh there's a lot of memories in this truck being a kid riding around in it i think our fuel filter is bad try it here how hard was it to pull dad i didn't pull hard at all tires still got air in them all of them pretty cool now that we got it out of here let's take a little bit closer look at this thing she got a little dirty in here still pretty good shape though seat go a long ways that's fine i just love those boot emblems on the fenders that's the coolest thing [Music] there she sits been a while since the hood's been up on this one look like the rats may beat us to it we're missing some belts but what just for the ac and is that smog smog you don't need pump that crap that looks good well let's take a look at the oil since we're here yeah it's there dirty smell like maybe a little gas a little gas hell smell like a lot of gas [Music] it smells like there's gas in there but it's still all right all right oil's fine neighbors shot him a deer yeah so i'll be honest with you guys i have never once in my life mechaniced on a ford as far as actually working on a ford engine i have never in my life done it so today's the first safety first big boy well this would be a good time to have one of them 20 20 corona mask i got one of them too you want one no swinging around with drive ripped well the word didn't catch on fire no i don't catch her on fire i'm gonna go drive this up by to you fine this is gutless put too much power to the ground too much power to the ground the tires start spinning yeah brought the whole battery from the travel log say let's uh let's throw this battery in here and just see if the truck will even crank right just throw the battery in it because before we start messing with it too much damn thing won't even turn over or crank there ain't no point so let's see what she does no smoke radio's on oh baby [Music] gotta get sued ready hold up that starter's kicking in ain't it gotta hear it oh yo little smoky smoke right there can't imagine why this thing's getting hot we're hot right here that sucker's hot let's say we uh pull this sucker off hit her straight to it and see if we can get her to crank skip the solenoid for it there we go we're just gonna try to get some better connections uh nothing too fancy there a little strip of vice grips but i guarantee that right there is our main problem so we gotta see what we can do about that strip that back found the side post luckily got a side post on here stripped it back so we need to connect that somehow this is the first time i've tried to use one of these little crap clamps you talk bad about that man this is why you get 500 off ebay for eight dollars yeah i hope we don't have to hose clamp some fuel line can't do that we got them on our ground got our hose clamp ground next to our cold air intake right there and let's see what she'll do jake's under the truck we didn't run him over we're trying to figure out how to get gas in this thing without messing with that fuel pump that's buried up in there and he's come to the switch for the dual tank we're ready to start cranking it but we don't want to turn the motor over and start pumping old fuel i finished disconnecting that fuel hose underneath there i went ahead and clamped this one on just so i don't get to crawl back in those stickers again cold now that's a start well not a start but better what we had there's three and four what do you got four and two the two will go to the three though so we know we ain't gonna get no spark without this thing so we're gonna try to clean that up just a little bit and get our sparxinder 9000 hooked up spark modulator is that what that's called i have no clue half for each one's quite a bit yeah i don't think we'll quite use all that the ignition module nine thousand three hundred all right a zip tie yes i do pull our coil wire off take a quick look in here and she could use a little cleanup we got that's what we got with this is what we'll use what is that door screen yeah that's trailer house door screen no i didn't for cleaning copper pipe that'll pop up off there you know no no well it's supposed to yeah without having a replacement part yeah get number one right here real easy yeah hopefully we got spark only other thing i brought was a coil used our door screen and got that as clean as we could it'll work i have faith one pop two pop where's our coil pop all right you see that there says she wants to run again give her a sniff i don't smell gas maybe i smell gas from pulling the field hose off i don't smell yeah it's just a little moisture you hold this be scared huh well i don't like that your uncle ruined me a long time ago somebody will go right to here here we go all right we have seven volts going to our coil check the other meter here so i did bring a coil and we swapped it out real quick all right yeah all right nothing we're still not getting no spark and i'm not knowledgeable on ford's so i'm really not sure what to try out here where my dad lives zero cell phone service so i can't even start to look anything up uh i did just kind of get lucky because sometimes nature calls luckily i found an old chair yeah i'll let you use your imagination from there microfiber don't wipe too bad um i'm gonna keep messing with it just a little bit see if i can find maybe a bad connection or something somewhere go ahead all right i've been having a hard time getting some consistent spark this condenser i actually found off the old travel all front frame and motor it had a new condenser in there i spliced it kinda together trying to make it work after that i got a little bit of spark um i don't know if this is supposed to be grounded and that helps it we're having a hard time getting consistent spark i just hooked this little ground wire up i should have done some research before i come out here but uh give her a go dad all right so it's hard to see it is sparking i don't know if it picked up on camera um i think i'm just going to try throwing the plugs in and pouring some fuel down it see how happens hey that's a problem all right it's stuck at closed our carburetor does not want to cycle it's like it's wedged something's wedged on it i've never seen one do this i can move everything but the main shaft here i don't see nothing in there water in there something sit for so long i can move the secondaries by hand but this thing is locked up tighter than a dick's hat man oh better let's just try with our return spring hooked up oh yeah let's give her the old foot pedal test pipes oh yeah then get some of these tools out of the way come on baby what do you think try her again [Applause] she acted like she wanted to for a second there when it first hit when it was going fast enough it didn't [Music] try it one more time i don't know it was a standard i tell you drag it till it starts ready yeah beautiful out this morning the other day me and my dad got out here we tried to pull this thing out just throw a battery in it and this ignition module and we couldn't get good consistent spark and we couldn't get it to start now i just bit off more than i could chew that day because we had family pictures go look at christmas lights all kinds of stuff so i couldn't just stay out here the rest of the day like i would have hoped to um honestly it's probably a good thing it i had to work last few days so now that i can get out here and let me do a little bit of research i wish we could have got it you know first try but we're back out here today and we're going to see if we can get this old girl to sing i got out here early and already did some stuff to it so let me show you real quick what i did that main thing was build new leads those old ones are so worn out and everything they were getting super hot um so this is some good welding lead i had a lot left over from the truck and travel all build so i had enough to build all new stuff for this stopped at the hardware store got some copper ends and just crimped them on taped those up i did get some of these little cheesy clamp ones make sure to get a good ground over here to our starter solenoid and that starter solenoid last time well she liked to get a little hot that starter solenoid got hotter than a goat's rear and a pepper patch so i decided to go ahead and throw one on here as well underneath here we got the old head knocker hopefully you can see our ground right there i was able to get my wire brush up in there on my drill and clean that block up good so nice ground right there and i'll give ford credit that was easy to get to and clean up for the starter so running these leads really didn't take that long actually this is the part where you hit your head this 460 uses a lot of power cranking uh it cranked or it drained down the battery pretty good the other day so hopefully that'll help with some of that and then the other thing i wanted to check was the magnetic pickup coil and the distributor one to unplug these a minute ago because i found a test we could do with my meter and that orange one just completely fell off that's the black one i had to cut it where'd the purple one go just barely hanging on so those connections are so bad i just decided to cut those wires and strip them and same on this side we're just going to cut and strip them and we're going to test this real quick and then if it's good we'll just twist it back together because i don't want to have to keep coming out here like i said in the middle of nowhere i have zero cell phone service and we're probably 30 35 minutes from the nearest parts store uh i did come a lot more prepared today we got some parts in here and we got the bed loaded down got the meter there set to ohms and we're just gonna test uh continuity between the orange and the old purple five five seven five fifty six so what i read said between four to eight hundred so we should be good right there and just for the state sake of still try and get old black betty here started just gonna twist these puppies together so black to black used to be purple at one time to purple and good old orange so i did strip back the tape off the wiring over to here so i could have some slack for these to be able to reach and there was a couple breaks and these wires going to the coil not complete breaks but i just cut it back behind the last one and crimped on these ends to go straight to the coil so i did shorten these wires up just a little bit there's one other thing i thought about too not being able to come out here i did look up a schematic for the uh ignition system and i found a good one i like it's hard to see on video but this ignition is just worn out it don't feel right you can tell it's you know just worn out inside there maybe whenever we're cranking on this thing contacts in in there aren't actually sending the 12 volts out to our ignition module so maybe we're just getting our 12-volt cranking but not our 12-volt ignition out there i'm gonna turn that key to the on position unplug our ignition module here the white is while you're cranking uh the red is for your 12 volt key so we'll go into that prong there i do have my black lead grounded over here and we got 12 4 so that's good now to eliminate the key messing up while trying to crank it and to make it easy since it's just me today we're just going to add in a jumper wire over here at our start starter solenoid so we can just jump right off the battery to crank it we had cut that wire last time for a break so i just added that one in right there should be able to hit this here and get get her cranking she cranks over a lot better so that's good we're going to plug in the ignition module because i don't have it plugged in and i think i'm going to pull a spark plug and ground it and see if we can see any spark i'm betting we won't get any spark out of this plug because i just broke the damn thing pulled another one and let's see if we can get spark so it's sparking but it's not sending it down the middle good straight shot uh but since i broke one i was gonna see what we could do with some of the old ignition parts but because i'm so far out here i did bring everything so i think we're gonna just do plugs plug wires uh i brought a cap and a rotor for it another reason it's good i got to do a little bit of research because i had no clue the firing order or what a cylinder is wet on this thing and if i would have guessed i would have got it completely wrong so i'm actually good i got i'm actually good i'm actually glad i got to uh look that up so it goes one two three four five six seven eight whatever you say ford uh i'm gonna put my finger and number one right here bump it over until it blows it out that way we can check our position of the distributor get her down there number one there he goes so that's blowing my finger out that should be getting close to top dead center for number one cylinder i don't know if it's picking it up but maybe you can see that pointer is really close to zero so we're close i'm sure it's hard to see down there but i have this thing pointing dead at zero now on our balancer down there so we're at top dead center put that at top dead center pull this cap off now according to this cap over here is wire one that is what we're pointing at and that would be going to number one so that's good just gonna rip all this old stuff out of here real quick we'll just put her back how she's supposed to be now that i know what i'm doing with old black betty here being bland alrighty next we'll throw our cap on here well that pointing at number one and pop our little clippies on maybe damn little clip kicking my butt pop pop i did kill the key inside uh just dealing with old coil stuff i'd rather it not be energized when i'm messing with anything on it because i don't feel like riding the lightning if you know what i'm saying so uh we're gonna pull out the plugs i brought some you think i would have looked up what we're supposed to gap these things to but we'll be all right this plug looks a little bit better than the old ones that came out of it i really don't know what i'm supposed to uh gap this to i'm just gonna do it at 35 that's a guess i don't know that's one i'm gonna knock out the other seven real quick let's get these four to get some of the dirt off this old sticker and right here spark plug gap 42 to 46. i can't think of anything else i'd rather do than just keep pulling these plugs in and out so we'll go down the other side and regap them to the spec so if you look at our old spark stick and our new spark stick this one has blue racing stripes so my money's already on it but it's a better plug it's hard to see but it's there if you need it don't forget a ford goes counterclockwise and i'm just going to kind of laid these things out the way they fit best last but not least get our coil wire on there all right i'll turn the key back on just then i heard the ignition module turn on so we get our battery tightened up a couple left taps a little gasoline carburetor still cycles let's see what happens oh that sounds good donut come on baby be good daddy i'm not very good at this i'm gonna end up burning the damn thing down our vacuum stuff's all messed up but i was hoping at least to get it to start to fire up so i'm kind of just guessing here but i'm going to come off the carburetor right here and just take it down to the vacuum advance for the distributor and then this one coming out of the manifold right here that goes into all this craziness i'm just going to take it right here to the carburetor the only other thing i see is i do see some kind of port back there i'm going to try to eliminate some of this craziness got our distributor here this one's coming off the manifold we need to get one to the carburetor i managed to save this little y shape she'll seal we'll connect this and try again i don't know how much that's going to affect us but don't hurt to clean that crap up real quick you got a good size port back here that's open take a little bit of our vacuum hose a little piece of stick that'll work [Music] the only component we haven't replaced and i don't really know how to test it um as far as other than what we owned out i don't know if there's other stuff to test on it is the magnetic pickup in the coil or in the distributor i did bring a set so let's pull this apart now this you just gotta pry up there is a roll pin in there so i need to be careful to not lose it some more oil underneath here i'm gonna put just a drop on her can't hurt nothing try to slick her up a little bit there we go come on baby all right there's a screw that mounts this down of course it's stripped out so now i'm trying to get this old stuff out of here of course that screw had to strip off you can see how dirty that one is i drilled it out and luckily i had enough drill bits i dropped i grabbed on my index but most of small ones are broke i got that drilled out what i didn't plan on bringing was a screw dug through all my stuff i found this one sheet metal screw so hopefully it'll get that tightened down and get a good bite on it pop this back on get a rotor back on and button it all up and we're going to try again [Music] it's trying again but it still just won't freaking hit hit a backfire can't even spin the damn distributor we'll do some gas and some trans fluid here build us a lubricant just solid around this thing is dirt and rat poop take that ac bracket offer and get to that i'm gonna keep working at it looky there yeah got her to spin finally took that clamp completely off was able to get the vice grips in there on it gonna see if i can get this freed up or maybe we can mess with timing while trying to start it [Music] [Laughter] [Music] [Music] we're getting sparked i don't know why i can't get it to fire i can hear that thing sparking off the carburetor i'm checking rotation just to make sure because that's the order i put the plugs in for firing order but whenever this thing's hooked up but when we have it all together it's acting like it's way off because it even slows it down trying to start triple checked we're at number one firing orders right and we have spark [Music] well as you can see i've got stuff absolutely everywhere and i'm gonna have to start cleaning up some of my mess well another day of getting my butt kicked uh i think my grandpa's haunting it i don't think he wants anyone to drive it unfortunately it's about two o'clock and that means i gotta head into town to pick up the girls from school so i've gotta get everything cleaned up if you look up butt whooping on urban dictionary there's a picture of me standing next to this ford i gotta work the next three days again so i was hoping to be able to get out here today and get it going again and here we are we'll be back there's no way we're gonna make the driveway today and not get stuck so we're gonna have to backpack in got a pretty far walk nice little walk kind of peaceful actually [Music] old chest i did a long time ago all right tool load quite a bit smaller this time we're going to do some checks on the ignition i know it's probably late but we'll go ahead and soak the cylinders anyways i did remember to stop and grab some waters but i forgot my coffee at the top of the hill that's just not a way to start the day step one she is having a hard time cranking the other day and it's cold today it's called her in a penguin's rear during a butt dragon contest so hopefully she don't crank over too slow first thing we're going to do is see if we can see a pulsing signal at the coil yellow wire coming off the positive there and got it just twisted and added to my little test flight that's missing the alligator clip we're going to go to the negative side of the coil or your tack side and we're going to crank it and see if this light pulses it's definitely pulsing the other day i tried to do that towards the end of the day and unfortunately i think the battery was so drained down i was having a hard time telling if it was flashing and or if it was just wow like the power was draining it down every time it cranked it's snowing people i don't know if it'll pick it up but that's definitely some snow coming down so with the old plug grounded here if the magnetic pickup is telling the ignition module to cycle then it should start cycling the coil and go spark spark spark so let's just hope hope hope that's definitely some consistent spark there so next i'm going to reattach the coil wire and we'll actually pull a plug and hook it up to a plug wire and we're going to make sure that we're getting spark all the way to the cylinders just to eliminate that something in a plug wire the cap or rotor um as it messed up i don't know if you guys can hear all the crows in the background but they are getting buck nasty out here today trying to make a damn youtube video they actually shut up i want to hear a funny story about a crow try to keep this short so we are at my grandma's house when i was little we were going hunting and i remember seeing a crow way off my dad's head is probably a quarter mile way up in a tree i got my little bb gun as soon as i as soon as i shoot split second later crow flies away kind in a little down motion like that and i swore until i was like a teenager i actually hit the damn bird then my dad told me i never did thanks dad fart bark bark spark sparks that's a good consistent spark now so i couldn't see it in the video that don't mean it wasn't there just for the hell of it we're gonna throw that plug in and hit her with some fuel and see what happens the other day the battery was getting worn down so let's just see what she does with a fresh battery now that i have verified i can see consistent spark oh snow's coming down pretty good we don't get snow too often in oklahoma i'm dreaming of a running forward though i don't know if one really exists so with spark and fuel and still no start um like i said i want to do a compression check on this thing and see what they're saying um so what i'm gonna do for that is i'm gonna pull all the plugs and i'm gonna shoot some oil probably some trans fluid a little 50 50 mix down in each cylinder and we're just going to leave it for today and then next time i come back out here hopefully on uh friday i gotta work next two days again we'll do a compression check on this damn thing funnel to some heater hose some 3 8 fuel hose to some vacuum hose and i can get that into the cylinders um oil and trans fluid not too picky on what i use just 50 50 mix now my dad can't really exactly remember what started messing up with the truck um as far as we knew there's no internal damage to the motor i thought we're just gonna have to troubleshoot some fuel and spark um but with pouring fuel straight in her having spark talking to uncle rick um uncle rick said we bird check compression if you guys have uncle rick you know you know you always listen to uncle rick another windy day down here so i'm inside the truck i came down here the other day just to do the compression test and i don't really know if i ever actually let you guys know the results of it that day before i got out of here here we go [Applause] [Music] about 118 on that one i started at number five number five was 118. that's low uh number six was 165 number seven was 168. that's some good compression and then number eight was like 119. number one was 133 2 was zero three was like 135 and then four was 144. i packed up my stuff i got out of here when i got in town i called uncle rick told him my numbers and he seems to think we have enough compression that it should run he thinks if we can get her to fire one good time it'll take off so i said well if i got good enough compression i got feeling i got sparked how come it won't run and he asked me one pretty simple thing that i think about it he said have you tried ether yet no i had not tried e3 yet and i know someone's watching this video thinking that the whole time uh i'll be honest that i've never had a vehicle that i've ever needed ether to get started now i understand this ain't a daily driver she's been sitting for a while so look what i brought today now it's windy outside so i know it's gonna mess up the audio but we're gonna go hit her with some starting fluid and see if we can't get her to pop off one good one uncle rick said give her a big ol snort of it so we're gonna give her a big old [Music] snort oh baby come on do y'all like that girl scream you know what the dumb thing of this is well how kind of stumbled the very first day on all the old ignition we may have got her to run day one had i brought a can of this now that being said i can troubleshoot a dura spark ignition system for you no problem now so i ain't mad about it man i like that you damn right i almost gave up on this thing to be honest i brought stuff for a cheap oil change i don't want to just keep running this on that nasty oil so uh i'm going to change it real quick should be straight shot it's just right drain pan it's all right i found this in the ditch and it's only got two holes in the bottom it'll seal straight shot right luckily old screwdriver threw it trick found a hammer over there got lucky on that one we're gonna see if we can't rig this up to be our gas tank just for now she's cherry go right there and maybe i'll do a zip tie there to there kind of hold that looks good perfect i don't have a lot of fuel hose so we gotta be able to go from here we'll probably zip tie the fuel pump up here just take it straight to the carb so when i mess with the timing last time i kind of paid attention to the gap between this wire connector over here and the engine so i got it set back to how it was it might be off a hair but it should be pretty close rig up the old funnel here don't count unless you make a little mess of course jackass we're gonna have a smoke show now folks just for trying to get this to run added our ground in on our ground for our ignition system that goes in and grounds in the distributor and then the positive i just kind of added in there with the uh terminal of the coil right there so when the key is on and the coil's hot the fuel pump will run so i have two of these because they come in a two pack on ebay i primed the first one it didn't work primed the second one tried it it wasn't working i went to pull this off and when i took it off and this thing got full power where it wasn't sharing with the coil it started pumping just fine so i just i'm gonna run a bat or a wire straight over here to the battery and i just seen it we are spraying fuel into our carburetor now [Applause] all right so we had our island off the fuel pump uh it's obviously set too low or maybe something's unhooked so let me see what's going on up here i found what i believe is the idle screw so let's try again [Music] we are showing high oil pressure which is good she sounds terrible i'm using the start fluid spraying around i can't find any obvious vacuum leaks which is really surprising to me um it just it did die but she just ran out of fuel already um so she's she drinks a lot that's for sure she got a problem uh it sounds terrible but i think most of that's a huge exhaust leak coming from the driver's side so i'm gonna top off the tank and see what the chances are this thing will drive [Music] [Music] the brakes suck and i'm rolling more smoke than cheech and chong but she drives i think most of it's coming out of here some of the other is the oil burning off i'm gonna throw the breather on and see if we can get the smoke to calm down a little bit so i ain't got enough for that but i got a zip tie this bed is absolutely full of trash so i'm going to back it up to the ditch and clean it out real quick bed's half cleaned out not perfect you know you gotta keep stuff like your boat anchor i have some spare ford for parts i have no clue where those came from through whatever kind of half looked important i don't know um that's all i'm gonna do to it i know it's running like kale i shouldn't do it i'm gonna see if it'll do a burnout if it will do a burnout then i'm gonna try to drive it up to my dad's house [Music] she don't run the best but feels good to drive grandpa's truck again a little muddy in here y'all wanna go off road little rough wow don't die baby well she's trying she just won't spin them my dad's gonna say why the hell did you bring that up to my house and we made it well this is where i'm gonna park it she made it well she runs like hammered hell she's getting warm but she ain't hot smoke's starting to clear away just a little bit but hey i'll take it reclaim my battery here for the travel law you did good old girl you did good she thought about doing one didn't she perfect you'll never know well old black betty she sat here for 15 years we got her fired up and we drove her up out of here pretty proud of that took a little more work than i wanted up there at my dad's dog's bark too much down here in the bottom wind's blowing too hard so i'm gonna have to find somewhere to hit you with an outro you darn tootin i want to guess this thing to be a speed i hope you guys enjoyed it did take me longer to get it running than i thought it would and i'm really curious had i brought some ether on day one if we went got her fired up their very first day i'm a guy i'm a guy i am a guy i'm a half i'm not half a guy i'm a glass half full kind of guy that's what i'm trying to say and um i got to learn some good stuff on this i've never once seen a ford and now i can troubleshoot a dura spark
