foreign hello I'm Mary and welcome to the Tartan topiary on this channel I always feature a book on the topic of interior design or gardening and often share ways that this book has inspired me or general musings of life come sit and relax while we look at Suzanne reinstein a welcoming Elegance with photography by Peter esterson and text by Michael Boudreau sadly Suzanne reinstein passed away just a few days after this book was published she will be remembered as a legendary interior designer a passionate Gardener and a very generous philanthropist she was a native of Louisiana and she brought a sense of Southern elegance and welcome to the West Coast when she moved there and opened her store hollyhock in 1988 [Music] in 2018 the New York school of interior design honored reinstein with the Albert Hadley award for Lifetime Achievement throughout her career that spanned three decades reinstein produced three books including this one she achieved an unprecedented level of refinement and clarity [Music] Suzanne's work has been featured in numerous Home and Garden magazines but along with her Flair for design she will be remembered for her spirit of giving along with her work in Garden Conservancy [Music] in 2010 Suzanne introduced a line of fabrics and wall coverings which became a perennial favorite among designers and clients across the country [Music] thank you this book features several homes all of which are in California they reflect a balance of richness and restraint that quickly became the signature of Suzanne's modern elegance and Timeless simplicity oh [Music] Suzanne's talent for using natural light as a major design element is clearly displayed in the beautiful and captivating photography of Peter estrerson [Music] thank you [Music] foreign [Music] the designer's love of objects from the past remains a touchstone of her Decor but in these newest rooms Suzanne flexes her ability to be stylish and modern while maintaining an elegance and simplicity [Music] foreign [Music] most anyone whether they are a long time fan or newly introduced to Suzanne reinstein we'll find much inspiration in these pages as she shares her ideas of how to live in a relaxed way surrounded by artworks and personal collections foreign [Music] or style is off limits the cover of this book displays a traditional Georgian Library painted in a very untraditional lacquered green Suzanne chooses a powerful lime green for a dining room in a Northern California home while a soft palate of Blues and pinks are the choice of a West Hollywood retreat [Music] foreign [Music] wrote in the forward resilience and flexibility are important in life as well as in design these houses are the last I plan to do as I have closed my studio and all of the designers who worked with me have started their own businesses while working on these projects the storage house we used burned down and with that we lost not only specially purchased antiques for clients but also Family Treasures the fire was devastating but we all pulled ourselves together and got on with it things happen good and not so good but whatever happens it is important that we have a space to which we can Retreat and in which we can feel comfortable and truly at home having beautiful things around you is wonderful but living beautifully is more important all of us deserve a place that adds richness and serenity to our lives and that we can happily share with friends and family creating that kind of home for my clients has been my goal throughout my entire career in design [Music] thank you [Music] foreign [Music] a welcoming Elegance photography by Peter esterson text by Michael Boudreau this book is 256 Pages it is published by Rizzoli and it retails at sixty dollars [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] while looking at a selection of Suzanne reinstein's designs I noticed this photograph which displayed antique wax seals I don't collect wax seals but I do have a small collection of stamps several Rings pendant seals fobs and other stamps [Music] this wouldn't belonged to my great-grandmother Mary Callahan and it was passed down to me it's a small gold pendant seal engraved with the name Mary during the Middle Ages people used wax seals to sign contracts agreements and letters instead of an actual signature wax sealing was associated with class and Power Royals Lords monarchs and Bishops all possessed an official seal many had their stamp made into a Signet ring they wore for security when the official passed away the ring was often melted down to avoid identity theft when a pope dies one of the first duties is to ceremonially destroy his ring this is done in front of his fellow Cardinals Signet ring was used by the Holy Father from at least the 13th century until 1842 this was done to First seal private correspondence and briefs post 1842 the seal was replaced by a red ink stamp but a new ring is still cast in gold for each incoming Pope colors of the wax used in Royal courts often distinguished administrative functions [Music] this is the letter written to Pope Clement VII in 1530 demanding the Catholic Church anole Henry VIII first marriage to Catherine of Aragon the letter was signed by 81 noblemen using their wax seals to show their support of the annulment this Wax Seal belonged to King Henry VII's daughter Queen Elizabeth the first [Music] today using a wax seal is unnecessary with handwritten correspondence and yet like many old traditions it is pleasurable to practice and adds a bit of personal distinction to any written communication the process of using a wax seal is fairly simple always practice safety as you will be working with hot wax and an open flame you will need a ceiling wax I use a wax stick with a wick there are other products but I find this one is the easiest to use you will also need a dampened sponge or a small dish for an ice cube by placing your metal stamp in this it allows the stamp to easily break free from the hot wax drip the hot wax onto your envelope let it form a circle about the size of a nickel and then gently place your dampened metal stamp into the wax and after a few seconds you should be able to gently remove it [Music] there's something exciting about receiving a handwritten letter or invitation especially if you get to break open a fresh wax seal the crafting of a handwritten letter will never go out of style that's pretty simple and while you're cleaning up don't forget to extinguish any Flame thank you so much for joining me and I hope you will watch next week as we look at behind the privets classic Hamptons houses text by Richard Behrens photography by Stan Rumbo foreign [Music]
