[Music] here it's a really good friend of mine he's been in this home for almost ten years and did a little work when he first moved in it was mainly painting and some cosmetic changes but as his tastes evolved and as time passed he wanted to add some more function Garrett has really good taste and to be honest the place looked good when we got here but he brought me in because he knew we were gonna get into some more technical things that required a bit more of a design sense the aesthetic of the kitchen is basically a classic Bistro black and white subway tile at a ceiling exposed black shelving I mean I have a black and white kitchen and it's something that I kind of really love to do he's very neat very organized person so we knew this was gonna work for him to have the things he actually uses on display but also ready to rock when he needs them we went with Ikea it was the perfect application because the dimensions worked really well and we were able to really maximize the height that was again a big part of it the cabinets originally didn't go all the way to the ceiling but it was a really heavy stone backsplash that did so it was a little oppressive in a way without necessarily being super functional the major change we did in the back was actually adding a window above the existing slider this was because he has such high ceilings but we weren't really maximizing the amount of light that we were bringing in to completely replace this window and do something that size would be quite expensive so instead we just added a new window painted the frame of the existing one black and it all of a sudden looks brand-new here it is definitely an entertainer so the Big Island and place for all of his cups to be stored and I mean he definitely cooked as well so he's using this kitchen and there's tons of storage space now the truth is when I first met him there was so little storage space he actually had shoes in his kitchen cupboard but we've solved that I promise it's a very Carrie Bradshaw moving back laya why's the main-floor was relatively the same so who was where it was TV was positioned where it was but the biggest change has got to be the fireplace it's a huge focal point but it's at a ton of storage and a lot of function room we actually took IKEA kitchen units and frame them into this wall structure basically how you would frame a normal wall and then cladded it with a faux Nero large scale tile it looks as if it's this one big slab because the seams are so tight and it's actually a very good foe I find the matte finish on it is a little less revealing of the fact that it's actually porcelain and then the fact that the sides which are the IKEA kitchen cabinets are also a matte finish kind of blends into one and when you open it it's this massive surprise of glorified storage Garrett has a lot of shoes which is a good thing a lot of running shoes a lot of dress shoes these he's all over the place and always very well dressed so to have them all housed in one place not in the kitchen cupboards was really one of the main goals of this thing originally in the dining area was located in the same place it was just a bit more traditional a sense that he had four dining chairs around it and it was just something kind of walked by he didn't use it as much he knew he wanted a banquette which I was really excited about and how it could incorporate with the existing table and kind of feel like it's always been that way so we had this banquette built it's also using Ikea lower cabinets so there's hidden storage underneath and then we did this channel tuft on this green vinyl so it looks really chic and it was pretty custom to get it to this point but the bits and pieces to do it were more affordable than you'd think when you go at it with a good plan on the opposite side of this mirror is a tiny little powder room and we were able to put it in in a way that it doesn't cramp the style of this main floor we knew we wanted to change it up in here and the rest of the space is mainly white so this room is a lot more dramatic in black we've gone with a very narrow sink and a smaller scale toilet there's a window in there there's a nice little bit of pattern with some accented wallpaper but mainly it's kind of Moody and I don't know it's an entertainers powder room I guess the second floor was transformed mostly by adding a skylight we've added a small scale sofa and a smaller desk than he originally had actually but it's really all he needs one of the other functions was adding a coffee bar up there which is just off his bedroom I was in the impression like this is something you're not gonna use but he does so the juice is definitely worth the squeeze the railing is also a big update it travels from the main floor to the second floor it's quite cheap in the fact that it's glass but then framed up by this nice black railing and then again just that skylight the addition of that just added so much natural light and created a space that you want to use a bit more originally this room was painted really bright orange and it was something he liked when he was younger but this time we went at it from a more pared back point of view there was a black accent wall so it's still bold but the color comes in more rich ways like through textiles like Velvets and other patterns the master bedroom we didn't change too much we change the position of the bed and then also built in some storage we just wanted it to look a little more custom so we framed out of base and framed out the walls and had it dry walled in and then added a second unit on the opposite side of the door so it created a wall of storage when you walk in styling wise it's all Garrett he's got great taste and his bed is so perfectly made that impresses me every time so the guest bedroom is probably one of my favorite rooms in the house it's really cute it's the best size for a guest bedroom who doesn't need to be much bigger I love the iron bed and the hits of rich green it again has the same vocabulary as the rest of the house light and bright and white with lots of black accents and little splashes of color but still enough personality for a guest room to feel special the bathroom was a big change it's the original footprint which isn't huge but it was more about making the size that is there work better he had a prefab shower unit before which was tight so we made it as big as we possibly could a glass enclosure use the same flooring material in the shower as we did in the bathroom which is a good trick because you're just kind of expanding the eye and there's not these stops and starts of different materials the existing brick was there which is a cool feature that we wanted to maintain and the toilet is a really funny thing Garrett is very very tech forward guy like the point that I don't actually know what he's talking about but this toilet has every Bell and whistle you could actually imagine so I couldn't tell you how to use it but it looks cool I think yeah it's really happy with it this is a very good embodiment of who he is as a person like it's modern and cool and clean and crisp but still layered and has lots of character and it's just interesting so yeah I think he's really happy [Music]
