[Music] my name's rosie durough and i make and design paper lampshades [Music] so the first thing when one's making a lampshade is obviously to decide what size and shape one wants i've got a cutout here of a medium-sized lampshade which works particularly well on a largest table lamp once you've got your shape ready you attach the paper to the back which is has sticky to it what you want to do is just gradually attach the paper and just it's worth taking your time smoothing as you go with your hands and just little by little attaching the paper it just goes on in rather a satisfying way it all started when my children were quite young and i was looking to try and create a business which i could do around them from home and i was looking for a good material to work with i enjoy going to stationary shops and craft shops and i spotted these beautiful patterned papers i thought oh maybe i could teach myself the paper way so then one turns it over and you've got your nice lampshade shape sitting on the paper and it's time to cut round it and then one wants to just cut a very neat line round the outside and turn it around and we can do the other side and what i do which i know not everyone does but i just think it finishes off quite nicely is i give one edge a seam stanley knife is good for this and i do about a centimeter at the edge there which you can then fold over and stick down so it just means that when the lampshade is together you've got an edge of the pattern rather than the raw edge of the inner card i use metal frames for my lampshades this particular size requires that top we're going for that one and a ring at the bottom now it's time to use the uh my favorite double-sided sticky tape let me go around very carefully all the way around so i attached a little bit of my double-sided sticky tape to the seam just making sure it fits inside it should one centimeter again and then you have a nice clean edge now it's time to attach the rings to the lampshade template so take the red tape off and position the frame right on the edge and then you gradually just roll roll and roll and because of the stickiness and the good quality of the stickiness it it picks it up for you until you get to the end and that's when my precious clothes pegs come into play and you attach it like so now it's time to do the bottom one always making sure just keep checking that the lampshade ring is just inside the cutout not on top inside and then with the help of one more close peg we hopefully have a nicely constructed lampshade there is just so much scope with paper you know one can do plain one can do pattern one can weave one complete one can puncture holes and and it's so it goes on i feel like i'm only just getting going it's really exciting so now it's time to attach the trims to the lampshade i pre-cut and make them to nice long lengths which gives greater flexibility when we attach the trims we get make sure we've got a nice clean edge and we start adding the glue to the prepared line and then off we go we start lining up the trim cut off the excess trim and i tend to tuck it over we'll take it under so there's a nice tidy edge we need to cut lines so that when i do little little triangles so that you'll see that when we come to tap them under they just sort of work round them which is quite nice and then it's time to start tucking in which is quite satisfying part of the process so i've got my wooden tool it needs to be sort of round and thin enough at the top to fit in and made from wood not plastic so then we start to try and get to the point where we're going to tuck the trim in i tend to go behind the line of the fabric just to release a little bit of space because it's quite stuck because of the sticky tape next to the frame and then i start just very gradually just tucking in so it's a sort of slight sweeping motion and then we move on to the next one so we give it a good sweep with a tool and then we start tucking under [Music] it really is 50 50 private clients and interior designers interior designers generally know what they'd like to order you know maybe just finalizing a few details regarding the fittings and so forth private clients some people know exactly what they want and order it through the website which is great other people might come and they want to discuss what would work with their scheme right at the beginning of a project i really enjoy that side of it i'm doing a bit more of the consultancy because every lampshade is bespoke after all and now we're at the point the final stage stick down the seam i do now go to a lot of lengths to stick down the seam often overnight using wooden struts but in the first instance i add a little bit more of the glue again not too much and then smoothing it round and then it's time to push it down i mean i i do tend to stand for a little while just holding waiting and there we go i think that's almost ready and i once that's finished i tend to let it sit definitely for a few hours because the glue and the paper and the frame they can kind of move a little bit so it's good to just to put it to one side and come back to it and just see if there's anything more that needs to be done and there we go the lampshade is finished it's so nice when people send in images and i get a chance to see the lampshades in their final destination
