[Music] it was a saturday morning very early and i kind of looked quite interesting from the outside with quite an overgrown hedge and not manicured at all so instantly it kind of made me excited i rang on the doorbell and this guy came to the door in his dressing gown and he was in the middle of having his breakfast and ended up showing me around and instantly i knew that it was a bit of a gem [Music] from the moment i set in and knew that a lot of the original features were in here it became really exciting and i sort of knew that it had the bones to become an amazing home [Music] it was a very small sitting room it was very dark and the whole house was in fact was 50 shades of brown so the renovations began in february 2018 [Music] original layout of the room was actually the same length and we just extended it out about a meter and a half the sitting room was always at the back of the house and it was something that i really wanted to keep although it's i guess not a traditional thing that most london terrace houses have [Music] when we had to knock down this wall we decided to change the height of the room and create this apex which is sort of where we spent the most money um as you can see we had to put in steels and totally transformed the room but i think that it's now gonna be such an amazing living space [Music] very early on we had to make the decision for how this room would look having to put plans in and i can't credit it was my decision it was definitely tom's but to have a a pitched ceiling in our sitting room i really like the idea of the sitting room feeling very calm and quite a peaceful room i sort of love this hamptons that kind of vibe of having these beach house-y rooms one thing that was originally in this sitting room was a working fire and that was something i really wanted to integrate into this room when we we made it [Music] and we sort of centralized it on the first part of the room because i imagine this part is going to kind of have a gathering of seating around it it's kind of got that slightly beach house-y feel but having this fire means that in the winter it's still very cozy [Music] and another thing that we put into our sitting room was a traditional sort of porthole window which allows you to look the whole way into our kitchen which is real little outside courtyards area it's just really characterful and i think with the contrasting woodwork it sort of adds quite a cozy little look over here [Music] so we've just finished completing all the paint work which i always find a little bit daunting when you see a totally empty space with the color and i start questioning all my decisions but i think when i've got the pops of color added in yeah i'll feel satisfied the the paint in this room a very neutral color called mizzle from varun bull which is the sort of welsh term of rain and drizzle i just wanted it to be quite a neutral canvas i wanted to have a smattering of different colors and textures and cultures and a mix of everything i decided on this green um which i think is pronounced calc calc green and again i really like the contrast with the walls and and kind of applying the color to the doors as opposed to the walls somehow people think painting woodwork white is a really subtle option in fact it's far more obvious and it pops out far more than a color that blends in i think when choosing prints it can often feel quite a commitment and something that's quite daunting but i think if you can look at it and pull colors from other parts of the room it sort of pulls it all together and then you have one common thread you can sort of oh it can be sort of all different um uses and it goes completely flat and completely up and i love it it's so useful gradually over time i've sort of slightly picked colors from it and found that it's married up with a lot of colors so i actually got this for 10 pounds initially and then i had this leftover denim from my kitchen bonquette and added this braid which i think is works quite well it sort of ties the joinery in this room together when i moved into the house i didn't have window dressing as you call it in i don't think any rooms as winter set in and it started getting dark at 3 30 and it suddenly became a bit eerie as a really quick fix i got some bamboo rattan blinds i think on amazon prime because i suddenly needed them next day and they sort of very much were just going to be for at night and they ended up kind of fitting in and when i then applied my curtains months later i kind of loved this contrast of having the mixture of blinds and curtains i'm basically doing sort of like four fifths in this quite heavy linen and then the bottom is going to be in a ticking so it's going to be kind of like that [Music] in the sitting room i always knew that i wanted to have a table that could serve many uses [Music] if i ever work from home i normally work here i find it a really peaceful serene quiet area [Music] i've got imaginary chairs here that i can visualize but no one else can [Music] these are very fab they're great i mean i love this sort of style of french ratan bistroy chairs it's just something like this i think you have to consider how it's going to look in your home with fresh painted walls a hundred and we're happy yeah to the shaking shop and i was a little bit indecisive on the spot of whether they'd work or not and yet they're still here a year and a half later and they kind of work with the kind of gardeny greenhouse-y conservatory feel of this room [Music] i had found a sofa which was a sort of 1950s style sofa had it here for about 14 months until i found the sort of perfect sofa for the room which is now this yellow corduroy sofa which i love and it took a very long time to make but it's now here [Music] the bookshelf in here we only put in last summer i worked with my husband and his team i liked the idea of having these sort of almost floating shelves i sort of was pretty instinctual about knowing i wanted to have this sort of paprika red in here and it just needed this pop of this sort of warmer witcher color [Music] a lot of my art taste has been quite informed by my husbands um who sort of introduced me to buying art a few years ago and to sort of the joy of finding young artists in my sitting room i have a big piece by an artist called emma gail when this piece arrived a couple of months ago it really sort of was one of the bits in the room that i feel like it sort of suddenly felt very cohesive and it all pulled it all together and in fact we had to move the lights about an inch each side to accommodate it [Music] shouldn't feel afraid of moving around the home i had a tin piece of blake here that is one of my most favorite pieces and you know it was so low on the wall and kind of almost had a bit more too much importance on quite a blank wall and i moved it to the stairs where i see it so many times a day these are from a young british artist and i love that they're a pair and they fill the wall and they're so much bolder and speak far more loudly here this room's changed so much over the last two three years and i'm sure it will change a lot and develop in different ways as my family grows and i think the home is just always evolving [Music] sorry in the next episode i'll be walking you through my kitchen [Music]
