Super Mario 64 man what a fantastic game it revolutionized videogames with its sprawling open-world environments at the time groundbreaking graphics a beautiful soundtrack and tons of replayability the game perfectly translated Mario's 2d gameplay into 3d but you knew all that already here's something you might not have known there was a plush set released for it now this isn't that much of a surprise back in the 90s if there was a big-name game coming out there was probably a plus set released in UFO catchers in Japan to promote it and since Super Mario 64 was such a big deal it had a plush set let's talk about it welcome to a look back at the Super Mario 64 plush set this set of six plushies was released exclusively in Japanese UFO catchers by the company banpresto around 1996 the set contains Mario more specifically wink at Mario Bowser a Goomba a Koopa possibly Koopa the quick King Baba and Metal Mario one of the most interesting things about these games specific UFO catcher plush sets is that they usually contain game exclusive characters or designs in this sets case King bobomb has a plush here and at the time of me making this video this is the only King Baba on plush in existence the rest of the plushies also have that Mario 64 look to them but more on that later like a lot of the older UFO catcher plush sets this set has become very hard to find and you won't find one of these guys for cheap let's go over each of these plushies individually starting with the wing cap Mario you know most Mario plushies out there are pretty stock and standard it's always like oh yeah it's a him Mario but not much else this plush however is one of the few that break that mold it is wing cat Mario after all however that's not to say that this plush is the only plush out there like this some of you may have been watching this video and saw this plush and we're thinking oh I have that plush well you may but it's more likely that you actually have the bDNA Mario plush this plush was released around 1997 a year after Banpresto released their plush scent it was available both in stores as well as the Nintendo Power super power supplies catalog you'll notice that both the bDNA Mario and Bowser look very similar to their banpresto Mario 64 counterparts what's the reason for this I have no idea it could just be a coincidence but maybe the people at bDNA took notes on the Banpresto ones when designing their plushies comparing the two Mario plushies you'll notice that they both share a lot of similarities they share the same pose they have the same details the bDNA plush actually looks like a cheap copy of the Banpresto one that's not to say that the bDNA plush is bad it's still a very nice Mario plush but the banpresto one is better and here's why the Banpresto plush is slightly bigger than the bDNA one the bDNA plush is stuffed with beans while the banpresto one is all plush while the details on the bDNA one are just iron on the banpresto one uses a hard material with fabric covered over it to give it a much higher quality look the banpresto plush has a blue hang string as do all the other plushies in this set here is a look at the plush sets tag on the front it has artwork depicting an epic Mario vs. Bowser fight with Mario getting burnt by Bowser why do they choose this art I mean it looks nice but you'd think they'd choose anything else it also has the Japanese Super Mario 64 logo the back of the tag has standard legal stuff that tags usually have however the tag has a full set sheet that's something you don't see with every set very nice AB and presto to include that and I'm pretty sure the text of the right reads collect all six or something like that as for rarity since he's the title character one could assume that Mario would be the most common plush in the set and they'd be right mario will only cost you around fifty to seventy dollars though i have seen him go for more the bDNA Mario plush only goes for around $20 max so it's the Banpresto plush really worth it well if you just want a wink at Mario plush and don't care about value or anything like that then I'd say the bDNA one is the way to go it's still a good plush but the banpresto one is almost like an elite premium collector's edition of the bDNA plush on its own it's a great Mario plush and would make for an excellent addition to any collection the Bowser in this set is pretty nice while he doesn't really look like his in-game motto appearance he does closely resemble the Super Mario 64 era art of him which is good once again this banpresto Bowser plus shares a lot of similarities to the bDNA Bowser plush they're both around the same size they both have very similar construction and detail however they also have a lot of differences the colors chosen for the plushies are different with the Banpresto plush looking more accurate to official artwork the bDNA plush uses iron-on materials for most of its details while the Banpresto plush uses fabrics the Banpresto plush also has more details when compared to the Biddy and a1 the Biddy and a Bowser is missing as spiked cuffs while the Banpresto one has them the face on both of the plushies look similar though the Banpresto Bowser has more teeth which for a character like Bowser is a good thing their shells look very similar they're almost identical the Biddy and a plush is once again filled with beans well the Banpresto one is filled with higher quality plush stuffing well with the - Mario's I'd say they're both really good plushies and you can get either one of them and that'd be fine I think with Bowser the bDNA plush is significantly worse than the Banpresto one since it's missing some details and overall doesn't really look that great and that's really surprising see the bDNA plushies could be found in stores as well as the Nintendo Power Catalog while the BAM presto plushies were found in Japanese arcades as prizes if you've ever seen claw machine prizes the Banpresto plushies are kind of like the Japanese equivalent of those so the fact that what is basically a claw machine Bowser plush looks better than a store-bought Bowser plush goes to show how high quality of this mario 64 plush set really is Banpresto could have easily skipped out on some of the details on this plush but they didn't and to be fair the bDNA plush is only retailed for $5.99 when they came out so they're great for that price point and yes arcades are much bigger in Japan than they are in America so it makes sense that a company like Banpresto would put a lot of detail into their plush but still as for Bowser's rarity I'd say it's worth around 100 130 dollars with Mario and Bowser out of the way we can start looking at the more unique plushies in this set starting with a Goomba yeah there have been a lot of Goomba plushies over the years but this plush really captures that Super Mario 64 look comparing it to how a Goomba looked in the game it's very accurate it even has cardboard in it to keep it looking flat making it look like it's in game low poly model since goombas design is very simple BAM presto managed to put every single detail needed onto this plush and it looks great his eyes are that cardboard like material found on the other plushies however this Goomba is unique when compared to the other plushies in this set as it uses the iron-on material for both its eyebrows and mouth it's very interesting that they didn't just use felt on these details like they did with the other plushies maybe it was a cost-saving measure who knows it doesn't take anything away from this plush though once again this plush is very well stuffed with plush material making it very firm a good price for Goomba is hard to determine I don't see a pop-up very often at all however given the ones I have seen I'd say he's worth anywhere from 80 to 150 dollars Goomba is one of my favorites in this set there's nothing wrong with him and he looks very unique given how much he looks like his appearance in game and that's a trend we'll see continued on to the next plush in this set now is this a plush of just a standard Koopa or is it Koopa the quick given how this set contains game specific characters it very well could be however Koopa the Quick Looks no different than a standard Koopa so it could work either way I'll just call it a Koopa plush for simplicity's sake this plush in many ways is like the Goomba plush it's simple but manages to stand out by looking like no other Koopa plush out there for example look at its hands his hands are just spheres they're ball hands an exclusive feature found only in Mario 64 coupons its feet are also flat once again having cardboard in them to maintain that shape and while they are flat this plush can't stand so they were probably added just to look like the in-game model its eyes are one big piece with a black line added to separate them which is a little strange but then again it's how Koopas looked in mario 64 - the black line you'll notice that this plush is missing the lines on its stomach which actually isn't accurate - Mario 64 Koopas I'll just assume this is another cost-cutting measure the show of the Koopa looks very nice with black lines on it to signify all the different sections of it all around this is a great Koopa plush and looks nothing like any other Koopa plush out there this plush is where prices for this set start to get really high given how Koopa isn't as popular as Mario Bowser or even a Goomba banpresto probably didn't make as many Koopas as them and since it looks very accurate to a 64 era Koopa it's become very sought-after over the years I'd say he's worth anywhere from 150 to 200 dollars and yeah that's a lot for just a small Mario plush but this Koopa has nothing on the last two plushies we'll be looking at introducing the second rarest plush in this set King ba-bong i'ma so glad Banpresto decided to make a plush of this guy he's such an iconic character to the game being the first boss you fight for the first star you collect yet despite him being iconic King bobbum doesn't get much merchandise even at the time when Super Mario 64 was the newest Mario game King Baba only got a few select items including this plush well the rest of the plushies are unique for looking like the characters did in mario 64 this plush is unique for just existing like I said before as of right now this is the only King Baba plush in existence this is a fantastic plush he has his moustache which is very well stuffed as is the rest of the plush his eyes are that hard cardboard material used on the other plushies and he has his crown made of felt which looks great a very nice detail with this plush is that he has purple arms in the game he's depicted with having purple ball arms and legs so I guess this isn't entirely accurate but it still looks nice he's actually missing legs entirely which is kind of weird but it works this is probably my favorite plush in the set but how much is it worth well this is the only King Bob on plush that's ever been made I can't imagine Banpresto made too many of him given how obscure of a character he is all of that together makes this plush extremely rare if I had to put a price on him I'd say he's worth at least 250 dollars I've never seen him go below 200 however I have seen him go for more here's a sold eBay listing for a near mint condition King Baba complete with tag and hang string guess how much he went forward if you said $800 you'd be correct but guess what he's not even the rarest in the set because there's one more plush we'll be looking at today Metal Mario it's very rare that you see companies make plushies on metallic characters because their designs are always very tough to capture accurately in a plot however Banpresto took the challenge of making a metal Mario and I think they pulled it off the plush is made of a smooth shiny material giving it that metallic look accurate to metal Mario since Metal Mario is just one color Banpresto used extra materials to capture all of his details for example each part of his eyes is a different layer of material which looks a bit weird but works very well once again banpresto didn't skim on any of metal Mario's details his hair his mustache his overalls it's surprisingly detailed for a plush using one color all these details are simply glued on which unfortunately means that over the near twenty years that these plushies have existed the glue has since dried up and now many metal Mario's out there are missing details such as the eyes metal Mario's and an interesting pose I think it's supposed to look like Mario's iconic peace sign pose from the game now then rarity for Metal Mario just like King bobbum it's very hard to put a price on this guy given how old this plushies and how hard it is to find one in good condition I'd say a good condition metal Mario is worth at least $500 though I have seen some go for more for a while this was the only Metal Mario plush out there however recently Jack specific has released a new Metal Mario plush as part of their world of Nintendo line he should still be easily available so pick him up while you can I have him and I can confirm that he is a top quality plush definitely worth getting so now that there are two Metal Mario plushies I suppose that there will be less demand for this original plush so we may see the price decrease a little bit but I think he'll retain most of his value now Jack's specific just needs to make a king bob on plush and we'd be set and that's the Banpresto super mario 64 plush set definitely one of the most unique and interesting Mario plush sets out there all of the plushies in this set capture that distinct look that only a plush set from the time of the n64 could have if you're a fan of the Nintendo 64 Super Mario 64 or anything of the sort these plushies could make for an excellent addition to any collection that is if you have the money for them I unfortunately do not have any of these plushies and I don't really expect to get any of them given how expensive some of them can get but if you're ever in a situation where you can get any of them definitely get one you will not be disappointed
