A Crazy Ending You'd NEVER Expect! (Eagles vs. Giants 1988, Week 12)

[Music] the philadelphia eagles are in the thick of the nfc east race with an attack that features the league's leading sacker in reggie white and the league's leading receiver in rookie keith jackson but their spark plug is randall cunningham whose acrobatic performance last week kept the eagles within distance of their division's top spot the new york giants are still searching for the formula that made them champions two years ago this set with injuries in place by inconsistency the giants lost a key divisional game last week in phoenix setting up today's test of character with new york share first place squarely on the line the philadelphia eagles have made the journey of the turnpike and they will face the giants live from giant stadium the nfc east looks like this the giants at seven and four tied with the cardinals who are losing he's lucky that buddy ryan knows his name because he usually just calls guys by numbers that's when he first met him he was 55 then he got to be rocking and stacy robinson was the man on the move sims gets it out almost picked off and is finally by joyner and joyner could go in sims knocked him out of bounds at about the two i think you're safety men then they'll be in first place all by themselves third and four from a 34. cunningham for jackson got a hand on it incomplete they'll have to punch helshick to punt for philadelphia back up the middle complete to jackson and the eagles will have a first down that good count on third down in fact cunningham's up under the center now no more shotgun cunningham under pressure and down he goes for george martin and lawrence taylor three-man line would give you look at all those guys packed in the middle on defense sims to throw it gets it outside morris this is adams and carthage now coming up the middle almost got received [Applause] and jeff hostetler has taken phil sims place him 17 out of 28. two touchdowns and now it's hotstatler out of the sprint formation third down and 10 47. of the pacific division and planning on repeating that's prime time here on cbs eagles with cunningham [Applause] got a man got a man open his run johnson and he is out of bounds finally by perry williams inside the giant 30. taylor's lined up 15 times on that side the offensive left four times in the middle and nine times over in the right so he goes where they think they're gonna run second and nine and cunningham is gonna take off loses the football he faced pepper johnson and it looks like the eagles did get it back third and 17. jackson will be in the slot right this time balls at the 41. here's cunningham out of the pocket for keith jackson incomplete and they'll have to fight and you can just see that someone the doctor touched his side or looked like he was just taking a step and his whole side went bad on him outside faker complete so that's the end of the third quarter with the score of the giant seven team the eagles ten and we now pause for a word from your local station i wouldn't expect phil simms to be back in jeff hostetler the quarterback emmanuel in motion [Applause] fires out complete to baker baker i think what the giants have to try and do is get third down and seven at the 32 here comes the giant blitz cunningham gets rid of it in the direction of carter is picked off by canard flag on the play back at the line of scrimmage a penalty marker down carter shook up [Applause] [Applause] he doesn't get enough with new orleans baby just to level down very close cunningham back to throw it now comes out of the pocket chased by taylor yes i think the eagle defense was tired and i think they've let him off the hook and i can feel momentum changes they're in four cunningham is going to come out again and he's going to get it up in more than a first down cunningham down to about the giant 20. tight games and big games and great players play great and tight games in the big game third and seven at the 18. the eagles if they don't make it we'll have to settle for a field goal i'm sure cunningham the middle to jackson fumble the official says carter got it for a touchdown for philadelphia chris carter after jackson fumbled at about the two the ball rolled into the end zone and carter came up with it raiders having a tough time scoring touchdowns here at 17-17 between the eagles and the giants jeff hostetler the quarterback fire stopped by eric first and ten giants at their own 49. three and a half minutes this is joe morris behind behind the scrimmage by jerome brown he just barely got the ball emanuel in motion ross detler dumps it out to morris and gets across third down and eight to forty nine hostetler goes out of the spread formation this time robinson was the man the motion comes to blitz on hotstatler pass incomplete intended for stacy robinson those kind of bounces in this interesting path uh cunningham gets the ball with two minutes left to go in the game 208 and he said this is the part of the game he loves the most he rolls out of the pocket chased by taylor comes out of there fires to jackson who makes the catch all you need is a little push at the end and he'll get around it and eventually you get a chance to get even here's cunningham back in the pocket setting fires it now they're going to say he was in the grass i think so i think the referee blew the whistle before he ever threw the ball third and 28 eagle ball at their own 25 high score 17 apiece cunningham with time for carter incomplete harry williams step for step the eagles will have to kick it giants ball at their own 45-yard line bart oates looking around and checking clocking [Applause] robinson and 60 minutes will follow at the conclusion of the game looking deep for manual incomplete third and five at midfield toss and we'll receive four good set of guns on him third down cunningham [Applause] gets to midfield and more the eagles are now at the giant 41 cunningham chase fires out of bounds incomplete he's going to throw it to keith jackson jackson is in the slot to the right the giants have got a lot of people up there on the line of scrimmage cunningham is just going and telling every player what to do they're coming after him incomplete he's lined up to hostetler's right daniel was the man on the move and complete intended for bavaro cranberry sauce and all that thank goodness we'll be able to enjoy them i never want to miss one [Applause] to terry hogan intercepted that's his second one he's intended for baker but hogue comes up with his second interception off hostile cutting ham back to throw it pressure's on him he gets it in the headaches down to the giant first and ten eagles at the giant 30 cunningham back gonna come out of there with it and get them closer and slides at the 15 from 32 yards away 31 make it now you sure you're ready the eagles pick it up touchdown sheldon white blocked it the eagles picked it up after the block and get it into the end zone what a what an ending [Applause] is saying he can't advance it this may not be over yeah but the thing is it's not fourth down if it were fourth down he can't advance it in the last two minutes of the game or on fourth down then they can't advance it and parcel may be right i think he is right that wasn't a fumble it was just a block kit marcel's pleaded his case and let's see what happens tom dooley the referee george martin is way back by the tunnel talking to some of you covered in the back field and advanced for a touchdown paul recovered in the backfield and advanced for a touchdown and bill parcells can't believe it [Applause] well let's see where it was it came from the outside sheldon white is the man who blocked it it was picked up in the backfield jerome brown up clyde simmons it's a philadelphia victory 23-17 in overtime the bizarre ending

So between this ending and the ending to the Giants/49ers game, if you had season tickets to the Giants that year, you were just seeing some of the most heartbreaking losses of all-time

Besides the first throw some of these throws by Simms aren't that bad
