9 SMALL MISTAKES THAT RUIN A PERFECT KITCHEN (& HOW TO EASILY FIX THEM!) | COMMON DESIGN MISTAKES

it's the easiest thing to fix and they're so ugly those are fun but they're not necessarily very chic [Music] hi and welcome to the house of valentina i'm valentina and today we are talking about nine small mistakes that you are potentially making in your kitchen that you could so easily fix and they would instantaneously lift your kitchen help it to feel more expensive help it to feel more stylish i'm running a real estate and design business here in the atlanta area has given me a lot of experience and a lot of different homes in all different price ranges and sometimes people need to totally get their kitchens and start over and other times they just need a few small fixes so today i thought it'd be really fun to maybe share some of the mistakes that i see and the easy fixes they will totally help you create a space that feels warm inviting sophisticated and hopefully just a little bit more high-end if you were excited about this video make sure you give it a thumbs up we hope that should have been on the list i always like hearing from you guys too so let's jump in i hate to always have to start with this but i can't help it if your kitchen is a cluttered mess it's always going to feel cheaper than if it is straightened up and cleaned up and all the clutter is gone so the number one thing that you can do that does not cost you a cent is to go through and declutter your kitchen and when i say declutter i don't just mean the countertops i mean the whole thing i have found that over the years i so often collected little bowls and little things and serving pieces and i just had so much stuff and it was always stuffed into my cabinets and i found whether i'm staging a home and we're minimizing to just a few necessities that if you can just pair it back pair it back to the things that you really need to have in your space and create systems and space to be able to put things away in an orderly fashion it's gonna make putting your things off the countertops so much easier and it really will change your life some of my favorite places to shop are places like uh creighton barrel i love their stacking mixing bowls i think that that is such a perfect find it really saves room inside of your cabinets crate and barrel they have really pretty glass storage containers you can bake in them you can serve in them they come with lids it's one of my favorite things and i love it because when things stack like that you can just fit so much more into your cabinets and really make them you make the most out of the space that you have otherwise you can also look at places like the container store they have all kinds of inserts for your drawers that will just help you get really organized this one step alone will revolutionize your entire kitchen and make you i think it just makes it so much more enjoyable i think one of the other big mistakes that people make is that they don't actually decorate their kitchens now i remember the yesteryears of the 90s when we all had the olive oil bottles and we had ivy trailing down i don't know if you did that but it was really the hot thing in the atlanta area everybody seemed to be doing it i love to use a big base for the kitchen i think that it's really beautiful to have a bouquet of flowers maybe some trimmings from the garden and a pretty vase it depends on whether you have upper cabinets or not whether you want a really big base or maybe something a little bit smaller i think also having a big bowl that's really beautiful it's full of green apples or maybe some lemons something like that just really dresses up your space don't forget to take the stickers off those of you that watched our uh our video on nine small mistakes i think those nine small mistakes you're making in your home yeah if you saw that one you know what i'm talking about no stickers on the fruit you can have avocados and all different kinds of fruit but just make sure you take the stickers off and you don't have to spend a ton of money places like amazon have really great choices i've got my amazon shop front where i try to link to that a lot of times so you guys can see some of the things that i'm finding is i'm shopping for myself and for my clients and i just favorite them and stick them down in there i also like to shop at places like creighton barrel and pottery barn for bowls because maybe it is a little bit more of an investment than some other places but typically they have something that's gonna i'm just gonna love for years and years and that's always a good investment next up we have ugly appliances it's one of those things maybe you got a toaster when you were in college maybe somebody gave you their cast off coffee maker maybe you went and bought a waffle maker whatever it is i find that a lot of times we have appliances sitting out on the counter that maybe we don't use absolutely every single day and they may not be pretty either so it's kind of a double whammy ugly appliances out on the counter just is a is a real no-no and when i'm staging for sure we always take those things and we tuck them away everybody's got a toaster and other appliances right but we don't need to look at them every single day i suggest that you only have the appliances out on your counter that you use every single day and if it is an appliance that you are going to have out pick something that's really beautiful that really enhances the feeling of your kitchen it's double duty i just said duty yeah it's a double whammy there you're really saving yourself a lot of money because not only you're purchasing something that's pretty to look at so it is decor but it's also practical and you're going to be using it and it will save you from having to buy two things so i suggest looking at appliances by smeg duel it sells some gorgeous options of course i am partial to the nespresso machine but even a carrick they have certain ones that are just a lot prettier than others so try oh in the kitchenaid the kitchenaid is another one i i am so in love with the one that they have in crane barrel right now i am like how do i get this into my life it's so good it is so good so when you have appliances that you really really love that you want to look at and you are going to use every single day putting them on the counter will enhance the look of your kitchen rather than taking away from it the ugly faucet a lot of times we buy a house maybe we are even renting and the house has come with the ugliest faucet possible it might be rusted the color might be ugly maybe it doesn't even work but a lot of times we feel compelled to keep these things in our kitchens and the faucet is the easiest fix to change and to immediately upgrade your space i personally think that investing in a nicer faucet may be something like a breezo you don't have to do water works unless you have a really big budget which of course i'm all for that if you have the money waterworks makes gorgeous pieces they are truly heirloom quality but you don't have to do that you can find some even at home depot that have a really beautiful designer look to them but they're still really budget friendly i suggest always trying to buy the highest quality that you can afford but you can definitely find that even on a budget you can switch up the color in the kitchen maybe you're going to switch out that and upcoming in just a minute where we talk about the knobs but you can change these things in your kitchen and give it a quick upgrade i found just like the faucet that a lot of times we kind of get stuck in the rut these things are easy fixes they're easy little updates that you can make in your kitchen i actually like to shop at places like home depot because they actually offer really high quality knobs for a very affordable price i have found so many on there recently i could just pop up so many pictures let's just show you all and all the options that home depot has you could upgrade to a brass because brass is really in right now but you could also do a chrome if that's what you really enjoy nickel you could also do an antique bronze all the black i think that you shouldn't worry so much about what's in style especially with your knobs because it's an easy fix and if you're selling you might think about what's on trend but if you're just living in your house and you're not planning on moving anytime soon just pick what you like the trends are going to come and go anyways and you should have what you really enjoy that's my suggestion outdated lighting is another thing that we typically end up leaving for just far beyond the time that we should and it's such an easy fix to change up your lighting again places like home depot wayfair they've got so many options for lighting that will instantaneously upgrade your space i think having a light with clear glass on it will really help bring a lot of light into your space if your home is from the 90s or maybe older you might have that glass that had like a frost on it that had like a yellow frost or orange those colors just kind of take the light out of your space and even when you turn them on they kind of make your space feel a little bit seedy so if you go for something that has clear glass or something that will brighten and lighten your space it will really help that dollar go so far okay to those of you who are subscribers thank you first of all can you believe that we're about to hit 150 000 subscribers oh my gosh i can't even believe that so first of all thank you so much and second of all i'm sorry you have to hear this again but you're soap pumps are killing your design if you have the soft soap or the dawn sitting out on your countertop and blue sponges it's just so ugly and you can buy pretty soap dispensers and just refill them you don't have to buy the expensive ones over and over i don't buy a new bottle every time i need to go buy soap you can also the little caddies that they sell at william sonoma are so cute either way it's so easy to update your soap pump and i think having your dish soap and your hand soap is kind of a necessity to to constantly have to pull it out from underneath and pull it up would just be too much of a pain which is why it ends up sitting out so invest in a really pretty caddy with dish soap and hand soap there and then it will just be instantaneously prettier and just it helps it just to feel more stylish and i think we enjoy it a little bit more now the sponges i know i'm bringing up sponges again as well i think that ugly sponges are just it's the easiest thing to fix and they're so ugly why do we get the blue ones why do we get the smiley face ones i'm i think they're called daddy or something like that they're big smile faces yeah those are fun but they're not necessarily very chic if you want something that looks a little bit more chic a little bit more high-end think about just going with a natural color sponge they sell them at target at your grocery store these are not fancy you can order them off amazon and i do that sometimes just to get a little a little case of them but they don't have to cost a lot of money you guys have seen if you've watched my ikea hauls one of my favorite things to buy at ikea is their sponges because up until recently they were one of the only places that did a neutral colored sponge i don't know why they need to be neon yellow i have no idea i don't see if they i don't think they clean any better in those colors so i personally think this is the easiest thing that you can do is just swap out your sponge put your little soap pump out and it's so cute it hardly cost you anything a lot of times my clients will tell me that they absolutely hate their flooring or they just feel like there's something missing in the kitchen so one of my favorite things to do is to actually add a rug a lot of times we just don't think to put a rug in the kitchen we think oh it's gonna get dirty food might drop on it that's okay i buy them at places like rocks usa and home depot is another great place to look for rugs even target has some gorgeous options if you have a galley style you can put a nice runner down the center between you know the stove and maybe the island even just an airy rug by the stove just helps it to feel a little bit more elevated it helps it to feel really pretty you don't have i really honestly would never i don't think i would ever spend a ton of money on the rug for the kitchen because i just like the fact that i can throw it in the washing machine if i accidentally drop pasta sauce on it or you know something else spills on it i think it's easy it's such an easy update it's such an easy upgrade and it really brings a lot of warmth into your kitchen it can add a quick pop of personality there's so many different options out there that you can really figure out what style your kitchen is and get a rug that goes with it finally today let's talk about bar stools this is another one of those things that's just such an easy fix places like target wayfair even walmart has some amazing options for bar stools and these parcels really just you know what it is is that you really don't have a lot of things to add to a kitchen if you aren't doing a major renovation in your space things like your faucets your handles the little accessories that you put in and the bar stools those little things that you add into what you've been given really have an opportunity to make a huge impact so i think switching out your bar stools may be an ideal way to immediately upgrade your space well it is about too poor outside and i think that we have just about used up all the light that we have for the day so we will stop there for today i hope that
