[Music] we rise again [Music] to create ourselves [Music] and must our lives be true [Music] we offer you our gifts not fully given the dreams [Music] give our visions [Music] to you my sisters and brothers we gather in prayer this morning in the name of the father the son the holy spirit amen may the grace and the peace of the lord be with you and with your spirit his mercy is more it's more than everything that we need and so we come at the beginning of this lenten season we come as seekers of that mercy we give ourselves to god trusting that the lord will give us what we need in these lenten days let us pray grant oh lord that we may begin with holy fasting this campaign of christian service so that as we take up the battle against spiritual evils we may be armed with weapons of self-restraint through christ our lord a reading from the book of the prophet joel even now says the lord return to me with your whole heart with fasting and weeping and mourning rend your hearts not your garments and return to the lord your god for gracious and merciful is he slow to anger rich in kindness and relenting in punishment perhaps he will again relent and leave behind him a blessing offerings and libations for the lord your god blow the trumpet in zion proclaim a fast call an assembly gather the people notify the congregation assemble the elders gather the children and the infants at the breast that the bride quit his room and the bride her chamber between the porch and the altar let the priests the ministers of the lord weep and say spare o lord your people and make not your heritage a reproach with the nations ruling over them why should they say among the peoples where is their god then the lord was stirred with concern for his land and took pity on his people the word of the lord [Music] lord for we are sinned [Music] lord for [Music] have mercy on me in your kindness in your compassion brought out my offense oh wash me more and more from my guilt and my sorrow and cleanse me from all of my sins [Music] my offenses truly i know them and my sins are always before me against you alone have i sinned oh lord what is evil in your sight [Music] put your steadfast spirit in my soul cast me not away from your presence oh lord and take not your spirit from me lord may we have sinned be merciful oh lord a reading from the second letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters we are ambassadors for christ as if god were appealing through us we implore you on behalf of christ be reconciled to god for our sake he made him to be sin who did not know sin so that we might become the righteousness of god in him working together then we appeal to you not to receive the grace of god in vain for he says in an acceptable time i heard you and on the day of salvation i helped you behold now is a very acceptable time behold now is the day of salvation the word of the lord um [Music] glory to you [Music] glory to you lord jesus [Music] you christ jesus christ repent says the lord the kingdom is at hand glory to you lord of god glory to you lord jesus christ [Music] the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to matthew glory to you lord jesus said to his disciples take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them otherwise you will have no recompense from your heavenly father when you give alms do not blow a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others amen i say to you they have received their reward but when you give alms do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing so that your almsgiving may always be in secret and your father who sees in secret will repay you and when you pray do not be like the hypocrites who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners so that they may be seen and then i say to you they have received their reward but when you pray go to your inner room close the door and pray to your father in secret and your father who sees in secret will repay you and when you fast do not look gloomy like the hypocrites they neglect their appearance so that they may appear to others to be fasting amen i say to you they have received their reward when you fast anoint your head and wash your face so that you may not appear to be fasting except to your father who is hidden and your father who sees what is hidden will repay you the gospel of the lord jesus christ pope francis and a lot of the world religious leaders have called today to be a day of prayer and fasting prayer and fasting certainly appropriate as we enter into the season of lent certainly the gospel outlines prayer fasting and almsgiving are the spiritual tools and pope francis goes on to say then that what this fasting especially needs to look like fast from hurting words and say kind words fast from sadness and be filled with gratitude fast from anger and be filled with patience fast from pessimism and be filled with hope fast from worries and have trust in god fast from complaints contemplate simplicity fast from pressures and be prayerful fast from bitterness fill your hearts with joy fast from selfishness and be compassionate fast from grudges and be reconciled fast from words be silent and listen and this sort of fasting will call us all to grow in holiness this sort of fasting will allow us to be instruments of god's peace and this sort of fasting is the fasting that we're called to as we enter into these holy days fast from hurting words and say kind words fast from sadness and be filled with gratitude from anger and be filled with patience fast from pessimism be filled with hope fast from worries and have trust in god fast from complaints contemplate simplicity fast from pressures and be prayerful fast from bitterness fill your heart with joy fast from selfishness be compassionate fast from grudges and be reconciled fast from words be silent and listen in a moment we'll have the opportunity to come to be marked with ashes committing ourselves to using the spiritual tools that the scriptures outline and echo for us today and for generations prayer fasting almsgiving after you've been marked with ashes at the end of your row is a card outlining just some very practical suggestions for all of us in these lenten days to turn to the lord and to experience the outpouring of god's mercy you're not going to have to turn this card in take it home with you let it remind you of the commitment that you make today and the work that all of us need to do in these days of lent my sisters and brothers let us humbly ask god our father that he be pleased to bless with the abundance of his grace these ashes which will mark out our desire to use these days to turn to the lord o god who are moved by acts of humility and respond with forgiveness to works of penance lend your merciful ear to our prayer and in your kindness pour out your grace and your blessing on these your servants who are marked with these ashes that as they follow the lenten observances they may be worthy to come with minds made pure to celebrate the new life and joy of easter through christ our lord amen [Music] oh [Music] god in your compassion [Music] make us worthy to walk your path in justice [Music] my sinfulness [Music] i am blessed [Music] ashes secure in your life [Music] the songs [Music] secure in your love oh [Music] god of mercy renewed the spirit in me cast me not out from your lord presence [Music] with sacrifice alone [Music] child come home [Music] ashes secure in your love oh god [Music] i'm here again in desert times revive my heart [Music] embrace me now and make [Music] me your eyes from these ashes [Music] throughout the lenten season over and again you're going to hear his mercy is more and that's what should give us the confidence the hopefulness that we can always lift up our prayers our needs to the lord [Music] for all church leaders [Music] for all church leaders and ministers that they will show us god's mercy is more by their example to repentance and reconciliation for the people of ukraine that they be held in god's loving care and protection and given the strength to endure their suffering and hardship for all who begin this time of renewal by prayer fasting and almsgiving may they feel the love of christ in this time of conversion [Music] for our parish community that together we may help each other bear the cross as we set our own interests aside and work for the good of others we pray for donna wilkes the intention of this mass and for all who have died may god comfort their families who mourn and unite all of our faithful departed in the joy of heaven for the prayers we hold in the silence of our hearts for those who serve to protect us for those who have no one to pray for them and for the one person here who needs our prayer the most we pray [Music] lord our god listen to the prayers that we offer give us the grace and the wisdom to use these days of lent to turn our hearts and our lives to you we make our prayer through christ our lord [Music] with these ashes [Music] joining together on this journey with you we walk these forty days and nights oh by your [Applause] [Music] us grace your life [Music] daughters and sons we journey as one with his ashes [Music] we will answer your call with [Music] by voices grace we answer in faith oh lord let us [Music] we know your love o lord with these ashes [Music] in need we give us you would love us to go by your grace [Music] with these ashes [Music] is [Music] pray my sisters and brothers that my sacrifice and yours will be acceptable to god the almighty father may the for the lord and glory of his name as we soundly offer the annual sacrifice for the beginning of lent we entreat you o lord that through works of penance and charity we may turn away from harmful pleasures be cleansed of our sins and become worthy to celebrate devoutly the passion of your son for he lives and reigns forever amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just it is our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord for you have given your children a sacred time for renewing and purifying our hearts so that freed from all sin we may find new life in your son jesus and so we join our voices with the angels and with the saints together we acclaim [Music] in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name [Music] us [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and the blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] us free [Music] god our father we remember with joy all that jesus your son has done to save us in this holy sacrifice which he gave to us as a gift we remember his death and resurrection accept us now together with your son he willingly died for us but you raised him to life again jesus now lives with you in glory but he also dwells here among us one day he will come again and in his kingdom there will be no more sadness or suffering or pain father you've called us together to share in the body and the blood of jesus christ to be strengthened by the power of the spirit through our sharing in this meal give us the wisdom the grace and the courage to serve you more and more remember francis our pope edward our bishop help all of us to work together for unity and for peace and bring us all at last together with mary the mother of god with joseph her spouse to live with you and to be one with christ forever in heaven through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever [Music] [Music] and together we join our voices as we pray our father who art in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses and as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us now into temptation deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant us peace in our day that by the help of your mercy we may be free from all sin safe from every distress as we await the blessed hope the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom of the glory lord jesus you said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not upon our sin but upon the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who lives and reigns forever and ever my sisters and brothers may the peace of the lord be with you always and pray today that we can fast from those hurtful things we say and do that we can fast from the offhanded comment so that we can build a better world a world of peace a
