hey what's up everybody dane here from moving to canada right now we are looking out at a beautiful view of montreal canada's second largest city located in the french-speaking province of quebec i am super excited to show you guys around and tell you eight things you need to know if you're thinking about moving here and hey if there's something we missed in this video let us know in the comments montreal has so much to offer it's gonna be tough to fit it all into one video but we're gonna give her a go here eh aniba first up climate montreal goes hard when it comes to seasons winter summer construction according to the national oceanic and atmospheric association in january the coldest month of the year the average daily low is minus 12 degrees celsius and that doesn't include the wind chill plus it snows a lot i promise you there will be at least one day in the winter where you step outside into two feet of fresh snow the wind burning your face off with a minus 35 wind chill and you ask yourself why why do i live here well my friend the summers that's why in the summer everyone in montreal emerges from their isolated winter cocoons as gorgeous butterflies ready to have a good time as you can see summers in montreal are glorious with average daily temperatures in july hitting 26 degrees but you can expect some hotter days where the humidity is much higher like for example today so if you can snag an apartment with air conditioning you'll appreciate it which brings us to the second thing you need to know about housing of canada's three biggest cities montreal toronto and vancouver montreal is definitely the most affordable option but the cost of housing has been increasing over recent years and it's likely to keep on climbing according to the website numbero a one bedroom apartment in the downtown core will cost you about thirteen hundred dollars a month outside the downtown core the average is closer to 900. a three-bedroom apartment in the downtown core will set you back about 22.50 a month and outside the downtown core you're looking at about 1550. being outside the downtown core ain't so bad montreal has so many incredible neighborhoods to choose from each with its own distinct personality there's the trendy and a little bit pricey plateau where we are now with these gorgeous montreal town houses a little bit further north we've got mile end also pretty trendy and if you're looking for something more affordable you might head east to mizuno a bit more of a french area or south to verdun we've even got the village formerly the gay village where you might find me shimmy and and celine dion on a friday night baby if you kiss me like this transportation in montreal is like an all-you-can-eat buffet whatever your preferred way to get around it's probably an option lots of people drive cars in montreal but you should be aware the traffic can be uh pretty brutal hey montrealers which do you hate more traffic or the bruins walking and biking are great options and as you can see there are tons of bike lanes in the city plus the public transit system in the city offers the underground metro system and a wide network of buses public transit will set you back 350 for a single regular fare or 88 dollars a month for a regular fare they're also great options for car sharing and even bike sharing through bixi which i use all the time just pick up a bike in one location and drop it off in another le francaise the fifth thing you need to know about living in montreal is that it is a city full of art and culture and festivals especially in the summer it feels like everywhere you go you stumble onto some street lined with popular cafes it's like here on avenue mo royale are you a music lover check out the montreal jazz fest or party heart at oceanaga comedy fan checkout just for laughs honestly it feels like there are so many different festivals celebrating different cultures and passions there's even an entire festival dedicated to poutine poutine week on top of that montreal has a ton of people from different countries cultures and identities about one in four montrealers are first generation immigrants and we see this reflected in a few different ways there are grocery stores like this one that carry specialty goods from certain countries there are neighborhoods that have significant immigrant populations from certain regions and there are even festivals that celebrate certain communities like the festival nui dafrik and cara fiesta if you're not a fan of crowds don't worry you can still find tons of activities in the sixth thing you need to know about montreal's many green spaces right now we are in park lafontaine one of my favorite parks in the city as you can see montrealers love to get out and enjoy the city's many parks a park can be a workout space a great spot to sit down and read a book or a wonderful place to meet up and have a picnic with friends plus in montreal you can drink alcohol while you're in the park but only if you're having a picnic the most civilized law in the world if you ask me sante the seventh thing you need to know about is access to education in montreal the city offers some incredible options for post-secondary study this is the campus of mcgill university an institution that consistently ranks as one of the top schools in the world but it's not the only exceptional school in montreal concordia university also offers top-notch english programs super well known for their business and communications and creative programs and in french the university de montreal and the university of quebec montreal offer quality university programming even beyond these universities montreal hosts a ton of other schools that offer training in specialized professions and vocations the last thing we're talking about in today's video is food and drink people montreal has so many incredible bars and restaurants honestly any kind of food you can think of you can find an exceptional version somewhere in montreal and montrealers take their restaurants seriously at pub brewski in the old port they built their own tap room to brew specialized beers to match their menu here at lukaima in the mile end the chef cooks traditional moroccan dishes every day and he will always spend a few minutes chatting with you at your table every montrealer has an answer to the question save viator or fairmount if you know you know and that brings us to the end of the video i thought we night off today's video by mowing down a quebec delicacy poutine that's fries cheese curds and gravy my choice for top poutine in montreal mcdonald's just kidding my real choice for top poutine in the city and look this is controversial i'm going to get rolled for this i know but it is the smoked meat poutine from lomain on sailor wrong if you disagree let me know your top choice in the comments but for me there is nothing better than a smoking poutine from the main after a night out dancing thank you guys so much for watching if you enjoyed this video make sure you subscribe for more canadian destination content and we will see you next time
