75KG Newfoundland is Unaware of His Size | Full Episode | It's Me Or The Dog

today's challenge a 75 kilo friendly giant Newfoundland get down who's completely unaware of his size and his excitable greetings are tipping his owners over the edge sorry he's a big powerful dog some days I don't know whether he's going to break my wrist or something it's quite scary isn't it really dangerous [Music] thank you in Cambridgeshire money can Josh live with seven-year-old son JJ and 18 month old Newfoundland Dougie JJ is autistic and bumbling giant Dougie is his best friend they're pretty inseparable yeah they've got a really good bonding he's lovely to watch and they were recommended as one of the top breeds for special needs children so um I think we definitely picked the right breeds for us yeah just a bit bigger than we realized yeah and big he is although this excitable giant doesn't seem to care about that when he wants to say hello the biggest difference is when he When someone knocks on the door you know he goes mad doesn't he and when this cuddly Cannonball hurls himself at you to say hello there's one place in particular he really likes to nuzzle in he's a crook sniffer no there's been a few instances we went into the the local supermarket I was at the checkout and I just heard this lady go oh oh my God you know and I turned around and Dougie was halfway through the doors uh sniffing this lady's crotch she said that what was it yeah I've been sniffed there in years so yeah that was a moment this excitable big lug just wants to be everyone's friend and when he spots a dog he'll drag Monique and Josh along with him so he can spread that slobbery love but not every dog takes kindly to 75 kilos of Newfoundland in their face it's quite scary isn't it yeah it looks really dangerous yeah it's a real Danger [Music] luckily Victoria Stillwell is on her way to help money can Josh get a handle on this huge handful Newfoundlands make great working dogs which is perfect for swimming pulling things and rescuing people in distress but it can be very challenging in a home environment which is something that the family I'm about to meet know all too well towering high at 71 centimeters and weighing up to 80 kilograms Newfoundlands are a gentle giant of the dog world Fame for their friendliness intelligence and heroism the sweet tempered Newfie is a famously good family companion and has gained a reputation as a nanny dog for children however due to their sheer size and weight these well-meaning goliaths can turn problematic when not under control their over-enthusiastic greetings have the potential to cause injury and harm hi Victoria nice to meet you hey nice to meet you too right so where oh I can hear him yeah but he's in the garden can I meet him Dougie Hello whoa hi [Music] getting a shower oh oh sorry he goes through your legs I think he really likes you yeah how much does this dog weigh 75 kilos at the last way in so you might be a little bit more how old is he he's 13 months so he does have a little bit more growing to do how is he with your son oh he's amazing he's so gentle his issues are exuberant greetings yes does this happen with people when they come into your house that happened with me coming to the door people and dogs on a walk very over friendly with everything and everybody yeah especially with other dogs as well oh with other dogs yeah he jumps at other dogs and it's quite terrifying for other owners and and other dogs and drags us a lot he does drag you yeah towards the dog he gets attacked a lot yeah does he yeah and he he doesn't really understand growling if he just carries on regardless um which often needs him getting bitten in the nose and that still doesn't stop him I'm just very glad that your massive dog is a very friendly dog yes because we'd be having a different conversation if he wasn't yeah today I'm here to observe so I'd like to see the sort of the different situations that you're concerned about okay okay I've seen one already yeah in fact I actually really do not have to see how he is with guests because I just received myself the good welcoming yeah a lovely welcome all right then well yeah I would like to see a walk oh walkie stacky let's go walkies heading for their usual Local Park Victoria wants to see how Monique and Josh handle Dougie's rather forceful friendliness outside the house so it's all right walking like this it's fine until you see something or student forgets you're there yeah oops wow he's just taken down a tree taken down the tree that's all kind of goes where he wants to go yeah doesn't he yeah he does forget where you are just wants to go and smell everything and say hi to everybody and it's not long before friendly giant Dougie spots a potential new body approaching there is another dog coming here so I would like you to take the lead please yes sure because I can see what he does without him making contact with another dog right and I want to make sure that that dog is safe yeah yeah so he's like keyed in yeah you really yeah probably that's all right we can continue I don't think they need to meet yeah I'm glad you were holding that lead I couldn't have hold him back either some days I don't know where he's going to break my wrist or something all right well let's uh continue on our walk having seen the effect Dougie's over enthusiasm is having on other people and dogs Victoria's Keen to help the family address these potentially dangerous issues now I'm used to being given that kind of exuberant greeting but I'd be worried if you've got JJ's friends coming over because if he jumps up he is big and he's going to knock you over and plus his whole crotch sniffing not really that fun right but for him you know you know the reason why he does it no sniffing down there he's gathering information about your sex about your health and about your emotional state isn't that amazing yeah this is what dogs do that's amazing right but the problem is I just saw how you tried to pull him back you just about were able to keep him back I'm not surprised other dogs go for him because he's all in it's terrifying for people and for dogs yeah how is it affecting your life well it's got to the point where um if Josh is away at Work Doug he just can't be walked because I can't look after JJ properly and have an unruly dog dragging me around new search hi nice to meet you JJ as Dougie is so important to JJ it's even more crucial that Victoria helps the family resolve these issues JJ was non-verbal when we moved here 18 months ago um and he'd get really upset when Dougie would go outside without him and he saw us standing at the door saying doggy and so he copied us and Dougie was his first word and then since then so many more words have come what that's why I think your decision to get this dog was so incredible because you know it worked I'm going to help you with some of these situations and I have some ideas amazing sounds good thank you all right so no time that the present let's get working it's given us a bit of hope that actually as we work with him so excited to get started with the training hopefully you can get there and have the perfect Newfoundland yeah [Music] in Cambridge Victoria is taking on not so gentle giant Dougie first up his playful pouncing on guests and careering towards crotches I love the fact that Dougie just loves everybody but maybe it's a bit too much trying to stop a the crotch sniffing and B jumping up so I have a plan so I'm I'm gonna go get something Victoria has brought not one but a whole box full of brand new toys for lucky boy Dougie I have the magic box here that only comes out when you know someone's gonna come over all right I'm going to let him rummage through it and I'm going to say go get your toy oh wow look at that you put high value toys in there for him because normally when dogs have toys in their mouth that they want to show they they don't jump up and be they don't Crusher only giving doggy access to these toys when guests are coming will keep them exciting and high value the idea is he'll be happy to show them off to his new friends at the door rather than sniff their crotches let him come up and see who's outside okay because that's what he needs to do yeah then he's going to come to the front door take this and then you put it down there okay right he wants to say hello and then instead of the jumping the crotch sniffing you go get your time and then you'll be like oh yeah I gotta go show the person the toy yes cool with his Tusk set and a guest waiting outside Josh is ready to get to work step one let Dougie go to the window step two let him say hello then tell him to go get his high value toy [Music] duck that's it encourage him go get your toy definitely gonna have to work really hard okay I'm just stop there has been very stubborn with doggy being too excited to get his toy and still going for the crotch Victoria UPS the ante okay so here's another thing we can do and adds another step to Dougie's training plan [Music] a body language thank you like that so you you do that as well research shows that dogs are incredibly good at reading our body language using calm physical cues can help manage your dog's excitement did you come in shut the door yes good boy can you say hello you can say say Hi and then you can see Luke go get your toy still get your charger do you see how you do that absolutely yeah okay and now you're gonna finally do it with me you have to manage your dog so that you can get people in hey go say hello and then hey go get your toy okay this is all yours Josh take it away with all three steps now in place Josh is ready to give it another go oh yeah how you doing hi that's all right shut the door on me there you go oh yeah hey how are you good right I'll go but don't worry you'll get it will it be Third Time Lucky for Josh hey hello so nice to see you thank you so much give him a piece of food Boy tell him to maybe greet them wanna go say hello it's gonna take a little work every day isn't it Josh you did it yes yeah he did yeah you had me coming in I know yeah that was incredible absolutely incredible yeah so that's your homework your homework is to claim your space right okay we love you we love the fact that you're eager to greet yeah but please just give us space to do it absolutely yeah well done [Music] I don't know with a plan in place to keep this Hefty Hound from leaping on guests Victoria wants to help money to control Dougie when they're out for a walk he's actually pretty good walking on the lead until he sees something yeah then he surges and I think he forgets that you're at the other end yep so we want to remind him having the lead like this is going to be much easier for me because you had the lead attached right at the back however when you attach this great double lead to this area of the chest you have a little bit more control double leads attached to the chest as well as the back of your dog give maximum control instead of surging forwards when they pull the front clip will turn their body back towards you ideal for large breeds like doggy so just gonna do a little bit of back and forth when you start doing different configurations of walking with him he has to look at you he has to know that you're there and then it's like poetry and motion it's like a dance where you're both learning the steps so should we go like this good boy you're turning away from him like Dougie and then oh my gosh suddenly you're really unpredictable and you're turning into him because you can see him going what are you doing he looks so confused I'd like you to work on just walking okay that's it turn away from him now walk into him figure of eight oh I've got to listen to you by constantly changing direction Dougie has to pay attention to Monique if she practices this with him every day when they do go out for longer walks his focus should remain on her to find out where they're going next great turn away from him encourage him this way this way taggy yes beautiful this way this way then you can just stop lots of praise for him well done that was so good thanks how did that feel so different I really felt like I had more control and it's the first time ever really so um yeah much better this is the first stage of this we have a technique to stop him from surging ahead now we have to use that technique practice it before we use it well there's another dog well done you look great time for the next step of doggies lead training Victoria has taken them to a secure field and brought along a fellow trainer with her non-reactive dog Jasper here we go all I want to achieve from today is to be able to get that distance of a place where you normally walk past a dog without him pulling you over right okay so that's why I want you to work with him Josh okay yeah because he is so strong he still once he sees the dog will pull and let the games begin so we're gonna walk here and then we turn into him he's always on our left hand side right so you see what I mean yeah Jasper's right there I like to let him look at the dog and then I say good boy yes good boy reason why we keep moving him is because if we do stay still like this that gives him time to gear up and go right so now it's going to rely on you Josh okay we're gonna walk fast we're gonna get him in the zone wait lovely that's why you don't no no no move a bit closer that's it there you go there you go you're really walking yourself I know it it's a little bit much it's a bit close quite close boy love the praise work it Josh lidy's matching you now yeah you've got to work hard good boy that's it a little bit closer now just here I want you to be here let's do one more back after 30 minutes of training Victoria asks Josh to walk Dougie just one meter away from the other dog but I'm done you're doing it you are walking your dog past the other dog [Music] how do you feel about what he's done I feel like there's definitely progress and just knowing that I can turn him in you know into the right direction um it's going to help massively so let's see if we can continue like that all right that sounds good okay fabulous when I first came to see you there was a bit of chaos yeah and and I did have a a massive Newfoundland jumping off of me um but he's just the most sweetest soul and uh hopefully you now have some more Tools in your toolbox which you can help him not just inside the house but outside the house as well the progress he's made it just over a few days has been really really good so you know it gives us hope doesn't it definitely be a lot more manageable yeah okay and yeah practice those lead skills please please please oh be well thanks Victoria cheers [Music] three weeks after Victoria's visit Dougie is making steady progress been listening um hasn't uh stormed anyone uh through the front door you know it's not jumping up not shoving his face in people's crotch so it's a lot better I have walked him on my own with JJ which has been amazing because I wasn't able to do that before so it's a big Improvement might get another one next chance we might need a help again then yeah Josh I do I do so well with Dougie it just goes to show that making small changes can have such a huge impact and seeing how good
