of mother mary hail mary full of grace the lord is with you blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb jesus holy mary mother of god pray for us dear brothers and sisters in christ jesus today we are on the second last day of the lenten retreat we are reflecting very specially on the london season and the changes that we should have during this time today we reflect upon repentance and reconciliation how can it happen in my life how can i repent and how can i have a reconciliation with the lord and with the people around us as we all know this london season is a season of renewable we are renewing ourselves by the help of the lord but all of a sudden we cannot renew ourselves we know it is very difficult to start something new it's always very difficult to make a new beginning we were living all these years in this world with our own convictions our own ways of doing things our own style of doing things but now we are given a season a lenten season by jesus christ by the church a special time to reflect upon the passion death and resurrection of jesus christ looking to him looking to the lord we are making some changes in our lives we are having a new beginning how can we have such a new beginning when it is so difficult to make some changes in our lives dear brothers and sisters in order to have a new beginning we need the power of the holy spirit in order to have a new beginning a new change a new renewable in our life we need the power of the holy spirit await us look into the scriptures when we open the scripture book of genesis there in the first part that we read that the spirit the wind which was spread over the waters how was the earth the earth was a formless void and there was nothing it was formless it was filled with darkness but then over the waters there was a hovering hour of the spirit the spirit the wind hovered over in the beginning there was there was the the presence of the holy spirit look into the new testament gospel of luke chapter one then we read that the incarnation is happening jesus christ is coming to take birth here on this world incarnation the salvific event and its center is the incarnation of jesus christ and as a beginning of this incarnation we see the power of the holy spirit to mother mary angel gabriel said the power will come upon you the holy spirit will overshadow you so that you will give birth to a son and he will be called the son of the most high he is god he is jesus christ dear brothers and sisters so the salvific event the birth of jesus christ the incarnation of jesus christ and its beginning it is marked by the power of the holy spirit every day when we recite creed we say by the power of the holy spirit mary conceived a son in her womb dear brothers and sisters in that beginning there is there we see the power of the holy spirit and then we come to the book of acts where we read about the beginning of the holy catholic church then also we find that the holy spirit is coming upon the apostles and mother mary so that from that day onwards these apostles are filled with the power of the holy spirit they are preaching the word of god everyone receives the word of god they understand things they understand different languages and they are having faith in jesus christ they receive baptism and then there comes the first christian community dear brothers and sisters three important beginnings the creation the incarnation and the beginning of the church all these three events are mocked by the holy spirit we see his presence there so in order to have a new beginning in our lives in order to have a renewal in our lives we need the power of the holy spirit we would read in the book of the gospel of saint luke chapter 4 there we read about the temptations we very specially noticed after baptism jesus christ was led by the spirit and what is that spirit is holy spirit he received the holy spirit the time of baptism and then he was led by this parade to wear to the wilderness and what happens in the wilderness 40 days he fasts and then the devil comes before him and gives him three temptations we may doubt why the spirit is leading jesus christ to the wilderness to be tempted we may doubt is it the work of the holy spirit to have temptation of course no it is a work of devil to have temptations in our lives but why the why the spirit is leading us dear brothers and sisters the answer is this we need the holy spirit to face temptations at the time of temptations who else should lead us it should be the holy spirit who should lead us always not only in temptations wherever we go whatever we do we should have that that protection our guidance of the holy spirit with us to win over the evil one to do always good we need the power of the holy spirit dear brothers and sisters when jesus christ is beginning his public ministry he is having that spirit in him he received baptism he received the holy spirit and now the holy spirit is leading him as he is fasting for 40 days all these 40 days he was led by the spirit and since he was led by the spirit he was able to overcome the temptations dear brothers and sisters that new beginning jesus christ is having the help of the holy spirit the human being called jesus christ he is of course god at the same time he is giving us a perfect model be led by the holy spirit during this london season dear brothers and sisters in order to have reconciliation in order to have a renewal of life in order to have repentance in our lives we need the holy spirit because holy spirit gives us holiness holy spirit gives us holiness we would read in the second letter to timothy chapter 1 verse 7 2nd timothy chapter 1 verse 7 then we read about the work of the holy spirit therefore to for god did not give us a spirit of coverties but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline dear brothers and sisters in order to have repentance in order to have a reconciliation with the lord i said we need the holy spirit and first step of reconciliation or repentance is this having self-discipline we have to discipline ourselves we should have the power to love god and love people so in order to have all these what we need we need the spirit a spirit of fearlessness a spirit of power a spirit filled with love a spirit to have a self-disciplined life in our lives dear brothers and sisters ask for the gift of the spirit again we would read jesus christ is speaking to us through john chapter 14 verse 26 john chapter 14 verse 26 but the but the other great the holy spirit whom the father will send in my name will teach you everything and remind you of all that i have said to you dear brothers and sisters what did jesus christ teach us the first teaching of jesus christ we would see in the gospel of mark chapter 1 verse 15 the first verse according to the gospel of saint mark is this repent the time is fulfilled and the kingdom of god has come near repent and believe in the good news dear brothers and sisters says this is what the holy spirit is teaching us whatever jesus christ has taught us the holy spirit will remind us about it and now what does jesus christ say repent and believe in the good news time is fulfilled the kingdom of god is here at hand it has come near repent and get into this kingdom of god believe in me dear brothers and sisters to this kingdom of god each one of us are called and in order to enter into this kingdom of god we should have repentance and in order to have repentance we need the holy spirit because holy spirit is leading us to holiness first peter chapter one verse two first peter chapter 1 verse 2 who have been chosen and destined by god peter is addressing the people the christians and about christians he says christians who have been chosen and destined by god the father and sanctified by the spirit to be obedient to jesus christ and to be sprinkled with his blood may grace and peace be yours in abundance dear brothers and sisters by this word of god we understand that the holy spirit is giving us sanctification and the same holy spirit is giving us the power to be obedient to jesus christ jesus says repent and believe in the good news and who is good news jesus christ himself is the good news repent turn away from your sins and come to god and that is what repentance is and in order to have this repentance you should be sanctified you are sanctified by the holy spirit and you are given the power to be obedient through the holy spirit we need the holy spirit to have repentance in our lives dear brothers and sisters now we see what is actually the repentance is we again and again say repentance repentance repentance and what does it mean in order to understand what repentance is we have to get into its root meaning mark chapter 1 verse 15 there we read repent and believe in the good news the word repent the greek root is metanoia metanoia the real meaning or the the true meaning of metanoia is turn around turn back take a u-turn you have to turn from something and you have to turn to something else so from and two both should happen there turning away from something and turning towards something so these two actions should happen there and that's what repentance is turning away from the world or sinfulness and then turning towards god that's what repentance is keeping you aside the things of the evil the things of the world the sinfulness we keep them away and then we turn towards god who is holy and mighty almighty god who created each one of us dear brothers and sisters that is what repentance is ezekiel chapter 18 verses 30 to 32 ezekiel chapter 18 verses 30 to 32 there we read therefore i will judge you a house of israel all of you according to your ways says the lord repent and turn from all transgressions otherwise iniquity will be your ruin if you are living on sin living in sin going on committing sin what will happen you will ruin [Music] there will be eternal punishment for you and you will have temporal punishments you have to undergo all this if you do not repent but you have to repent verse 31 cast away from from you all the transgressions that you have committed against me and get yourselves a new heart and a new spirit why will you die a house of israel dear brothers and sisters to this we are called for what we are called to have a new heart and a new spirit in god repent keep away all the sinfulness and have a new heart and a new spirit be led by the holy spirit have a new heart to love god and love people around us verse 32. for i have no pleasure in the death of anyone says the lord lord god turn then and live so it is metanoia if you want to live if you need eternal life what you should do you should turn from your sins because god does not want anyone to die for a christian there is no death for a christian who believe in the lord there is no death there is life after death so he is not really dying there is no full stop in his life by his physical death but it's just a transformation a time of transition from this world to the eternal world jesus christ says turn so that you will live saint augustine we know he was once a sinner then he turned to be a bishop a priest and bishop proclaiming the word of god all around the world he was and he was able to speak and defend the faith in jesus christ and he said once every saint has a past and every sinner has got a future a beautiful sentence meaningful sentence caught by saint augustine he says there is a past for every saint once upon a time he was a sinner but he received a point in his life a moment in his life to understand about his sins and then he turned towards god there is a past for every saint and for every every sinner there is a future if you are a sinner dear brother and sister you understand that you have got a future you have given a moment here right now this is the time of salvation turn away from your sins and come to the presence of the lord believing in him and trust in him god says you are mine god says you are mine my own child come to me peter's sermon we would read in the acts of the apostles chapter 3 verses 19 to 20 again it's metanoia the repentance is metanoia repent therefore and turn to god so that your sins may be wiped out peter is making his first sermon to the people who gathered together in jerusalem to them peter is speaking with the f as he is filled with power repent therefore and turn to god so that your sins may be wiped out verse 20 so that the times of refreshing may come from the presence of the lord and that he may send the messiah messiah appointed for you that is jesus christ peter is speaking about the prophecies of the prophets of the old testament what is the prophecy turn away from your sins so that you will have a time of refreshment a refreshing time it may come from the presence of the lord and that he may send his messiah appointed for you that is jesus christ the prophecy of the prophets the life of jesus christ and his mission is foretold by the prophets and now we know two thousand years ago jesus christ came to this world he has incarnated and then he died for you on the cross paid price for your sins it's a time for making a refreshing in your life make a refresh in your life so that you will come to the lord you will turn away from your sins dear brothers and sisters again we will read in the gospel of saint matthew chapter 11 verses 20 to 24 matthew chapter 11 verses 20 to 24 jesus christ is not able to understand the cities who do not repent then he began to reproach the cities in which most of his deeds of power had been done because they did not repent dear brothers and sisters jesus christ is approaching what does he say what do you cross in what to you but said for if the deeds of the power done in you had been done in tyre and saturn they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes verse 22 was 22 but i tell you on the day of judgment it will be more tolerable for tyra and satan than for you dear brothers and sisters jesus christ is reproaching at the cities who do not repent there are so many great deeds that he has done the very creation is the first moment when god loved you you are created on the in the on the on the face of the earth in his own image and likeness and that moment is the first moment when you understood that god is loving you and from that moment of your creation till now god has blessed you with various blessings various blessings in your lives various gifts in your lives and various graces in your life understand that and come to the presence of the lord be repented over your sins dear brothers and sisters have to have repentance have to repent in your life in order to understand that we have to go to the gospel of saint luke chapter 15 that we read about that that classical parable by jesus christ the prodigal son have to repent dear brothers and sisters the first thing that we have to do in order to have repentance is this be aware of your sins be aware of your sins here the younger son from the father he went away with all his belongings and he led a life of luxury a life of pleasures a life with worldly pressures then he lost everything enough he is in utmost misery then he came he understood that he is sinful what did what do we read in 18 15 18 i will get up 18 15 18. i will get up and go to my father and i will say to him father i have sinned against heaven and before you against heaven i have sinned and before you i have sinned the will of god was revealed through my father and that will i did not obey i sinned against you o father and i have sinned against heaven the awareness of sin from there starts repentance and verse 19 we read he trusted in the lord that is the second step the first step is to be to get awareness about one's own sin second step is this trusting in his father i'm no longer worthy to be called your son treat me like one of your hired hands i will return to my father and that father will receive me that's my confidence i will go to my father and i will confess my sins and i know that my lord my father will receive me with his hands filled with love a heart's filled with love dear brothers and sisters that trust in the lord helps us to make a fruitful repentance a fruitful change in our lives a fruitful renewal in our lives so dear brothers and sisters the first step is to get aware about one's own sin second step is to have trust in the lord third step is this you repent for right reasons you repent not for your own well-being or in order to have some escape in order not to escape from your present miseries but to really adore and worship the lord in order to that in order to have a true worship in order to love lord in order to love people around you for that you have repentance not for anything else repent for right reasons and fourth step is this say no to sin say no to sin we know dear brothers and sisters whenever we take such a decision there will be a lot of temptations in our lives when we start something new as jesus christ faced three temptations when we start something new there will be of course there will be temptations but we should have that courage trusting in the lord i will say always no to sin i will no more commit sin i will ever in the love of the lord dear brothers and sisters let us repent let us come back to the lord let us be reconciled with the lord let us feel that love of god let us feel that presence of the lord around us so that we'll be truly a new creation we'll be truly we will have a true renewal in our lives a true repentance in our lives may this london citizen help us for that hallelujah thank you jesus praise you jesus hallelujah we look into the blessed sacrament jesus lord we all are sinners in my life i have committed sin against you oh lord against people in this world and i understand i am not worthy to be with you jesus lord i am not worthy to stand before you i am not holy i am filled with sinfulness but jesus in you i trust being aware of my sins i come back to you trusting in your lord i come back to you you are the father of the prodigal son you will receive me your lord i know that you are merciful i come to you o lord weeping over my sins turning my eyes away from all the worldliness all the pleasures of this world from all my sins i come back to you we extend our hands towards the blessed sacrament jesus lord we plead we beseech your jesus receive us into thy heavenly apart receive us our lord to that love embrace us our lord and fill our hearts with your love a holy spirit inspire us to be with the lord always a holy spirit give us a fresh with the tax collectors and sinners and jesus answered them those who are well have no need of a physician but those who are sick i have not come to call the righteous but the sinners to repentance the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ dear brothers and sisters in christ jesus in today's gospel passage we see the culinarity of matthew matthew is a tax collector we all know jesus calls he lives everything behind and he follows jesus and he gives a big party at his house and pharisees condemn this act of jesus mingling with tax collectors and sinners because pharisees considered tax collectors as great sinners because they used to work for roman government and they used to collect tax but they used to collect more tax and they used to keep some for themselves and give rest what is needed to the roman authorities and so there was a great hatred towards these tax collectors and they were filled with hatred because jesus was dining with tax collectors a group of tax collectors and sinners dear friends jesus responds to them saying that the physician need the sinner person who's sick need the physician the righteous doesn't need the physician in this gospel passage jesus is presenting himself as a divine physician he is not only a physician of the body but he is a physician of our soul because the last verse proves it i have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance yes our soul need healing our soul need healing and when our soul is corrupted by sin we need healing and there is only one divine physician who can heal our souls that is jesus praise the lord hallelujah thank you jesus praise you jesus christ dear friends you can have an attitude of a pharisee or matthew what is our attitude you have to analyze today do i need jesus in my life or i don't want i'll do certain practices i will try to be holy by my on my practices by living according to what i like and i can keep doing whatever i feel good but without the help of jesus are you trying to live your life you should ask this question this gospel passage invites us to have an attitude of that of matthew levy jesus says follow me and he follows this is an invitation for me and you it's invitation for all of us to follow jesus it's open invitation for everyone in this earth every human being jesus says follow me it's an open invitation anybody can follow jesus provided there are some conditions first of all you should have the humility to accept that jesus is god and savior of my life you should accept jesus is god and savior of my life if you're not able having that humility and trust in jesus is god and savior of my life we can't accept jesus invitation jesus invites us today to follow him matthew accepted that invitation probably you may be thinking i'm a sinner i am bird i'm lonely i have a lot of problems i've been a hated person in my own family in my own society like matthew you may be having a lot of problems you may be considering yourself i am unworthy to follow jesus but jesus is not looking at your status in the society he is not seeing you as a sinner like jesus saw as saint in matthew jesus saw a saint in the tax collector jesus saw a gospel writer in matthew jesus sees a goodness in each one of us it is we who judge us we only think we are sinners and so on but in the sight of god we are all god's children invitation is open you surrender your burden you surrender your pain because jesus says in gospel come to you come to me all that you're carrying have a heavy burden i will give you rest yes my dear friends jesus is ready to give us rest whatever you may be burdened you're carrying is surrendered to jesus what you need is to surrender ourselves totally third thing what we need is is to follow jesus as to give away our sinful past whatever our sins because jesus has come to this world not to condemn the sinner but to save them not to condemn to save them he bore our sickness carried our aware sins we need not be under the burden of our sins we are to give our sinful life this lenten season invites us to give up our all our sinful habits yes radical following of jesus needs to say goodbye to our sinful past we see in the gospels one more man a tax collector like levy zacchaeus he was a tax collector he too was hated in the community but he was accepted by jesus when he had an encounter with jesus he went and died in his house that day he made a decision that i will not cheat anyone if anybody i cheated i'll give pay them three times more than what i cheated yes this holy mass is a encounter what you are having with jesus if you want to follow jesus radically you have to give up your sinful past zacchaeus gave up his sinful past levy gave up his sinful past we are increased to give up our sinful past so that the divine physician of our soul can heal and restore our body mind and soul and only jesus can do that praise the lord hallelujah hallelujah thank you
