today i want to talk to you about something incredibly important i want you to stay tuned all the way to the end of this episode because at the end i'm going to give an eighth tip that kind of is more important than all the rest of these but these are imperative this is the seven essential elements that you need to consider before and during a crisis we'll be right back [Music] if you were today or anytime in the past open the military handbook that they give to all the men training to go into like the army or whatnot you'd find that the first and most important thing they address is mindset and there's a reason for that there is almost nothing that is more important initially when a crisis is just around the bend or already taking place for you to have the correct mindset i want you to think about this just for a moment you need to have the ability to evaluate rationally your own mindset you've kind of got to step out of your own shoes and then look back at your life for a moment and say okay am i a little bit too aggravated right now to make a wise decision am i too sleepy right now am i too hungry right now am i too moody you've got to be able to evaluate carefully your own mindset secondly i want you to think about this if you're too pessimistic if you're too cautious if you're too concerned about the the fears and what could go wrong you're probably already in trouble on the other hand if you're too hopeful and too optimistic and naive you might survive only a minute or two longer than the other extreme what i want you to try to aim for is a victorious realism what that is is this mindset that recognizes your weaknesses your strengths it recognizes what's going wrong around you and it recognizes what is also going correctly what are your biggest obstacles and what are your biggest assets to work with in any situation and then take a breath and make a correct and well thought out decision not instantly but with with intentionality in it that takes a lot so you've got to practice right now while there's no crisis and then you're going to be tested when you know a crisis is just around the bend but in the moment when it actually comes you have got to master what it is that is going to have you making the correct and wise decisions for that moment that's why we've put mindset as the first element now before i go any further let me just say this i want you to get out a piece of paper and write these down because you're going to want to revisit them and they all need practice before anything comes so number one on your list is going to be mindset number two on your list which these are not in a particular order of importance and so all of these are imperatives i hope you got that already the second thing i want you to consider is water you need to know how to collect water how to find it not just when you're at home and can turn on a faucet but when you're out in the wild when you are in some urban area that you're completely unfamiliar with maybe you're at work maybe you're walking along a railroad track maybe you're in an obscure environment that you were not prepared for i want you to know how to collect water and where to look for it then i want you to know how to filter that water i want you to know how to purify that water i want you to know how to store that water and carry a little bit of it with you okay there are a whole lot of different aspects to knowing what to do to have water that is going to be available to you and remember that each human whether it's just by yourself for you and your spouse or a whole family i don't know but whoever you're with is going to need at least one gallon per day that's for washing themselves and also for drinking especially if you're out in the heat you're going to use every drop of that probably just drinking to keep yourself going through the day the next thing i want you to think about is food now if you're at home and you've got some canned goods on the shelf you think that you're set but i want you to consider a little bit beyond that what have you got in your car or in your bag your backpack with you that you could eat in an emergency do you have some food like that is not going to go bad and have you considered the importance of having a kind of some equality going on with some carbohydrates as well as some fats as well as some green stuff to put in your system you need to have as balanced of nutrition as possible and in an in a regular situation men generally need about 2 000 calories per day and women need about 1500 calories per day that's a that's a very much a generalization but if that is the case now imagine when a crisis is taking place or something that's stressing your body to the max you're going to need more calories to burn so i want to encourage you don't prepare for the bare minimum but have some sort of food in every person's pack in each car and in your house enough to sustain you personally and your family start with just a three-day supply and then aim for a two-week supply and then i want you to get all the way up to a three-month supply and then i'll let you plan after that lord willing you won't have to think that far out but at least start there with a supply of food learn how to preserve food multiple ways and learn how to preserve it without electricity multiple ways and also learn how to identify forageable food that you can eat if you're in the wild and how to set traps because you're going to need protein you're going to need meat if you don't know how to identify good mushrooms full of protein you better know how to trap some little animals or fish or something that's going to give you that protein that your body needs also learn the forever foods you have seen our episode on that probably in the past where i mentioned at least 21 but there are others and i want you to know how to identify them and at least have most of those that you can get in your pantry so that you know they're never going to go bad and you don't have to do any extra work to preserve them all right we're on to number four that's shelter now when i say this category i want you to think carefully because shelter isn't just how to build a tent in the wild shelter is also how to keep a roof over your head but also what you're putting on your body it's kind of that whole category of coverings you're going to need a certain kind of fabric that's going to wick moisture away from you in the summer you're also going to need fabrics that keep you warm in the winter even when they get wet so you want to think about wool and silk and some that might be a little bit more expensive than that cotton that you hoped would just carry you all the way through cotton feels great when it's clean and dry but as soon as you get wet boy you're going to feel like a drowned rat and it'll stick to you and it will not retain any heat it will just make you even colder so you want to think strategically and prepare accordingly with the shelter and coverings for your body in different seasons throughout the year have those available to you in your car in your backpack in your home and think of how to build shelters so in the event that you are in an urban area and you are not at your own home where are you going to look for shelter that's safe you've got to consider this ahead of time but know how to make these rational wise decisions in the moment when the crisis happens because you've you've pre-thought them and pre-planned ahead of time then at home what kind of shelter do you need in place there also you need to know different methods of making it so you might have a little tarp with you but if in the event that you don't boy how would you make it out of natural things or what you're able to salvage out of a dumpster or such go ahead and think through those and write those ideas down all right we're ready for number five fire you know i couldn't not mention fire i want you to go out and master at least five ways for how to make a fire with and without matches five different ways that you could make without anyone around to help you and then i want you to always have with you at any time at least three of those ways okay now if you know how to make fire in the wild with nothing with just rocks or sticks or such that's one of the methods that you could say you've carried with you but you need to have at least three methods of making fire on your person at all time can you remember that but have five ways mastered the next thing i want you to consider is this you need to be able to evaluate your own health and level of physical ability before a crisis and in a crisis this is really important do not be presumptuous i have to admit myself i was just putting a go bag in the vehicle just this morning and i realized how heavy it was and i thought okay if it's if it's so heavy when i just pick it up off the floor to carry out to the vehicle imagine if i had to walk all the way from work to home with this very pack on my back i have not got the strength or the muscles that i should and i need to work on that i want you to think realistically about your own situation do you have diabetes do you have feet that swell up at night do you have um shortness of breath or any kind of asthma because of the pollen that might be in the air you've got to take into consideration whatever it is that that are your assets but also your liabilities prepare for them in advance and have a way to to contend with them okay if you cannot carry something yourself if if that is something you're not capable of come up with some jerry-rigged contraption that carries it for you come up with bike wheels that make a little cart that you can that you can pull behind you or learn how to ride a bike and have a bicycle available to you whatever it is that you need to do right now before something comes up this is the time to do it but your health is going to be one of those absolutely paramount elements that you've got to consider in any situation remember that you've got only a certain amount of strength and you have the ability now before a crisis to build those muscles up to get prepared so that if you are hiking up and down mountains you're ready for it have the right shoes that you need have the right prescriptions that you need ahead of time i want to also encourage you do the research this is the time to do it when you have access to so much knowledge online do the research to find out in the event that you did not have access to that particular medication that you are needing all the time right now if you didn't have that what would you know to do are there herbs are there things you could forage in the wild are there natural remedies that may not be quite as effective but would sure be a blessing in the event that you had no prescription drugs with you go out and learn about those find them learn how to administer them become an expert in the in the back-up plans okay this is really important and your health is going to possibly determine how much longer you're able to live in a crisis all right here's number seven it's safety sustained safety this is kind of two-fold because you need to have a plan that is already practiced and prepared ahead of time that that you're able to put into place right before a crisis happens if you see something going down and you know it's going to come your direction already have a plan in place as much as possible and then also if you find yourself in a crisis where it's already on you it's already here what is the safest thing you can do for that moment but also for the long run so kind of think of this as twofold immediate and long-term safety for both you your spouse your family whoever it is that you're with let me give you an example when you walk into a restaurant and think of any business but when you walk into a restaurant many of you men do this already and i applaud you but you sit with your face facing the door so that you can see any threat that might come in or go out i want all of us to become situationally aware so we know where the staff is entering and exiting where is the side door over there by the bathrooms besides the entrance learn how to recognize all of those type of things and where people are sitting and who might be agitated and who's not where wherever you go churches post offices the barber shop and the restaurants think about that this is very very important also you need to have a plan for self-defense what is your plan and there's probably not one there are probably multiple ways that you need to defend yourself if you're close at hand if you if you have some distance between the person and you if the threat is not a person but a bear or a earthquake or whatever it is what are the different ways that you need to prepare to have safety for yourself and your family there might be a perimeter of surveillance that you can set up around your own home that might entail a movie camera on your front step but if you need to have a little wire that you have that's a tripwire all the way around the outside of your property that's not absurd you go ahead and do that because if you know a crisis is around the corner go ahead and learn how to set up some sort of a perimeter for your own personal safety there are other things that you need to consider like do i stay or is it safer for me to go that's something to talk with very carefully and thoroughly think it out with your spouse because in a crisis you're going to have to make a decision potentially very very quickly so knowing ahead of time what are the criteria for keeping safe where we are versus finding a safer place somewhere else and where is that else and how do we get there and all of those factors there is a lot more to discuss and we will in future episodes but that's number seven thank you for staying to the end and thank you for letting me share my heart with you just for a moment the other eighth element that trumps all the rest is your own salvation your soul if you don't consider it all the rest doesn't even matter i'll tell you this in in the holy word of god it says what does it even profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his soul and i would say to you there is no way to lengthen the allotted the appointed number of days that you have here on this earth take the time to consider where you're going to spend eternity i want you to think not just for today but after this little tiny breath of life is passed and eternity begins that's more real than this that's more tangible than this where will you spend eternity you have a god who created you for a relationship with him and he loves you so much get to know him he loves you he wants to know you i'll see you next time thank you for joining us [Music] goodbye [Music] [Music] you
