hey everyone this is nick and linux is just better than windows windows users okay okay change your shirt fine yeah this one might be true but you do know i own multiple white shirts right it's not always the same one that i wear so linux is better than windows for a ton of stuff it doesn't mean that linux is perfect it doesn't mean that windows does nothing right but yeah linux has the edge in these seven areas just like today's sponsor has the edge if you want to extend the lifetime of your python applications thanks to tax care for sponsoring this video if you've ever worked on a project using python you know how frustrating it is to discover that the version you're using is going end of life and you're gonna have to speed through and hurry up to refactor and rewrite a bunch of code well tuxcara can now help you plan that transition thanks to their python extended lifecycle support with that new service you can keep your existing code base and still receive security updates and patches to python even if that version is no longer officially supported this means that if your code base is still working for you you can still have it meet your security requirements and you can plan the transition to the new version of python with a bit more peace of mind so you can learn more about tuxcare's python extended lifecycle support by clicking on the link in the description below so the first area is software management yes we have tons of packaging formats but any single one of them is better than the alternative on windows sure you might have to add flat hub support or snap support but once that's done all your apps and packages are available in one single software store you can install anything in one click and update the system and the apps in the same place it's just miles ahead of the older windows way of doing things search online for the official website of the app then download an exe then click next 10 times while dodging the potential spyware or bloatware it wants to install it's nightmare fuel and sure windows has a store now and it's getting better but it still doesn't have everything and yes chocolaty and wingate exist but let's be honest how many windows users know about them and how many use them let's be real most windows users still hunt online for exes and that's a horrible horrible way of installing software imagine having to update each app from its own gui instead of having a central update place imagine having to avoid malicious installers distributed by websites that often rank higher in search results than the official one imagine being forced to update your system instead of picking when to do it that's windows folks linux is just better in that regard windows is getting closer but it's not there yet at all the second area is monetary cost linux in 99 of cases is free of charge you don't have to spend a dime to install a linux distro some offer paid options like zorin os some let you pay what you want like elementary os but you can always get these for free but i got windows for free i didn't have to pay it it was right there on my computer well extremely badly executed accent nick this windows wasn't free in most countries you can ask the manufacturer for a refund of the windows license which the manufacturer hides in the cost of the device it generally amounts to about 50 bucks if you try and buy windows it will cost you about and thirty dollars from the windows store or you can procure a windows key for a few dollars but most of these keys aren't legal they're either oem keys that aren't supposed to be sold to individuals used keys keys for students or keys bought from a country where prices are lower and it's illegal to use them in the country that they weren't bought from but they still work and yes and a pirated copy of windows will still work it doesn't mean that it's legal and you will often also hear the same trope repeated again and again linux is only free if you don't value your time because you will have issues to troubleshoot and you'll have to learn how to use it and switch to different programs and that's pure nonsense you also spend time troubleshooting windows issues you also spend time learning how to use windows and how to use certain programs time spent learning something new is never wasted except if you were expecting linux to be a complete 100 clone of windows which it isn't will never be and should never be sold or marketed as except if you use windows fx but i'm still very surprised that they didn't get a huge lawsuit yet okay another big win for linux is its open source and free software nature why should you care well apart from the general philosophy behind it it brings a ton of advantages first it means people can fix stuff quickly if an issue is detected and it's a big problem that affects a lot of people it will be fixed in days sometimes in hours that's because the code is open and someone that's also affected can just grab that code fix the issue and submit their fix so that everyone can benefit from it you don't have to wait for the company to acknowledge there's an issue prioritize it in their deaf teams fix it then release it to everyone and this also means that if you know how to code you can also try and fix the issue yourself if no one else seems interested try doing that to fix all those adobe premiere crash or that bug in microsoft office that drives you crazy you can report the bug but that doesn't mean it's gonna get fixed open source and even to a higher degree free software is a demonstrably better option than full proprietary apps look at eldon ring as an example a game not meant to run on linux at all and that shipped with huge stutters linked to how it handled shaders proton and dxvk developers fixed the issue on linux before the devs of the game even managed to fix it for windows which means the game ran better on linux than on windows even though the game has no linux version now let's talk performance because linux can be a lot more efficient than windows in terms of disk size a clean windows install will use 20 gigs if your device has 64 gigs of ssd or 128 gigs that's a sizeable chunk of your disk space just gone most linux distros use about four or five gigs sometimes up to 10 and some lightweight distros just use upwards of 20 megabytes like tiny core and that's with a graphical user interface admittedly a very ugly graphical user interface but still that's a thousand times less space than windows linux can also run on super old computers without making them unusable of course if you use the latest ubuntu or fedora release you'll need something like two or four gigabytes of ram but again with smaller more lightweight linux distros like tiny core or puppy linux you can get away with less than a gig of ram and still have a usable device or at least leave some ram for hungry apps like web browsers or you can spend hours compiling everything in gen 2 to make sure that everything runs just as well as it's possible that's also an option if you want to do that generally linux will be more resource efficient than windows and even if most popular distros have the same resource footprint as windows you do have easy options to install something more lightweight instead of trying to find a barely legal insecure debloated windows iso linux is also vastly more configurable and offers a ton more options than windows why is choice important because we all use our computers to do different things and having a one-size-fits-all desktop will never serve everyone perfectly you end up with something that kinda works for everyone but is perfect for no one on linux you can choose from an enormous number of distributions and desktop environments and tools to make sure that your experience is the one that works the best for you and sure this also creates issues especially for beginners who don't know which linux distribution to get but that's only because they are not used to have to pick an operating system imagine being confused by the number of phones available or the number of cars available people are used to that it's no different on linux just pick one use it and if it doesn't work pick another one and all that choice isn't just surface deep it's not just i want a blue desktop or i want a green desktop it impacts the options you have to customize your experience and how you will really use your computer you just don't have that kind of choice on windows you get to choose between a few editions that artificially lock features out to get more money but your experience will be the exact same whatever the device unless you're willing to use third party tools to modify how windows works you have a taskbar on the bottom a light or dark mode and an accent color nothing else that just cannot work for everyone it's a compromise for everyone and this is why some manufacturers like valve or ionio are not using windows on their devices or are planning to phase out windows in favor of linux because linux is a more modular system that can offer stuff that windows was never designed to do linux is also a more private system when you install windows you have to go through about 10 screens of configuration most of which will ask you if you want to have your data collected and most of them only letting you limit the data that is collected not completely turn it off windows also requires a microsoft account or at least hides the option to not use one so that 99 of people will create that account none of that crap on linux the distros that have telemetry and there's not many of them have a simple one-click method to disable it right at setup and if you don't disable it all the data is completely anonymous linux distros don't sell ads or run ad servers they have no use for that data and most of them don't even have any telemetry at all as per security it's not an inherent advantage of linux but linux is targeted far less than windows by malicious actors and before you say that's not true linux servers get targeted all the time yes linux servers not desktops when hackers try and breach a linux server they generally target a package a tool or library that is designed to run on servers these packages are generally not installed on desktops and even when they are hackers want to have the biggest results possible for their efforts so they are not going to attack a single desktop user they're going to attack a server that hosts data from millions of users and this is why while linux isn't necessarily more secure than windows it is noticeably safer to use a linux desktop than a windows desktop if you get infected by a trojan or some ransomware on linux you had to work really hard to get that thing on your system okay last area where linux is just better is the terminal that's not something you need to use to have a working linux desktop anymore but it's a fantastic and extremely useful tool linux has always been designed to be fully usable using the command line and the graphical desktop part was added after that while windows completely moved to a fully graphical interface earlier and as such didn't really focus on the command line that much and of course windows made progress on that front with powershell and their new terminal app how much progress well let's say they must have realized that linux was indeed better because their biggest advancement in command line has been to enable people to run linux inside of windows with wsl would they have needed to do that if windows was a viable option for development or if their command line tools were up to snuff i don't think so the linux command line interface is just insanely powerful bash scripting is super easy and can automate tons of stuff for you and there are tons of tools you can add to the default utilities to make the terminal even easier to use and more powerful and on that note i have a cool video about some awesome linux terminal tools you can install to make your command line experience a lot better check it out in the card up top so yeah we still have other issues on linux hardware support can still be finicky for some devices lack of third-party big-name apps is also an issue even gaming isn't as good yet although it's still pretty freaking good miles ahead of what mac os offers for example but we do have the edge in the seven areas undeniably but if you want to see the other side of the coin i have an older video where i showcased what windows 11 does better than linux and what we could learn about it it's also going to be in a card up top and if you want to get rid of those pesky hardware issues there's also today's sponsor tuxedo tuxedo is a company based in germany and they sell laptops and desktops that run linux out of the box you can pick from a selection of popular distributions you can just install your own knowing that everything will run perfectly out of the box because the hardware supports linux and if there are a few tweaks here and there needed to make things perfect they have ppas and repos you can add to the distro to make sure that everything is golden they have a huge range of devices from the smallest ultrabooks nux workstations gaming laptops gaming pcs you name it and they all have a plethora of configuration options for the cpu the gpu the memory the storage even adding your own logo on the lid of your laptop of course they offer all keyboard layouts and they ship worldwide so if you need a new device and you want to make sure that you support linux development and that that device can run linux perfectly head over to the link in the description below and get yourself a tuxedo device they're really nice so thanks everyone for
