6mm Creedmoor HOWA 1500 - The Proving Ground

welcome back to the proving ground my name is Jon Patton boys and girls were at the hundred yard range normally we're shooting over at the extended range but today we're at the 100 yard range with this bad boy this is a how a 1,500 barreled action in an MDT chassis and it happens to be chambered in six millimeter Creedmoor not six five six millimeter now we've been doing this proving ground show a little bit and you guys have been giving us some incredible feedback and I really appreciate it there's been comments about the methodology we're using the way we're shooting the speed at which we're shooting the ammo we're using blah blah blah blah blah the point is guys this is meant to represent real-world results we're not pretending like this is a laboratory and that will never be the case here at the range but we are out here to find out what we can do with a particular setup we're expecting with most rifles at least 1 MOA groups if we get better than that is a good thing but one MOA is kind of our benchmark and today we're gonna be trying this out with three different kinds of ammunition we've got some Hornady varmint Express that's an 87 grain bullet we've got a heavier Hornady match bullet that's a 108 grain and then some of Ben's pan loads with a 105 grain motel hollow point unbelievable it is made by Hornady now before we get to shooting let's have a word from Cole TAC calm all right guys here we go five rounds of the Hornet e87 grain varmint Express I believe it is a v-max bullet and we're gonna go ahead and load this thing up we're using a tracked optic it's the toric ultra HD on top of here today and this action is actually I was told one of how is test actions so it should shoot pretty darn good let's go Ben are you ready Ben is on the spotting scope I might want to shoot it I'm gonna go bottom left center all right all right let me get all the way here in my position did it pick up that round now let's think I had the mag seated there we go there we go see that one 12 o'clock yeah there we go that mag is being a little wonky but that's okay yeah that makes probably gonna be tight to you top brakes a little bit yeah guys we're just out here getting a baseline to see what this gun really likes to shoot and what we shoot well with we're gonna go to extended ranges if it does well I think that one may have been a me all right last round okay about edge that is a fairly decent gun I'm gonna go ahead and put down one more group with the 87 gram we'll see if it's about the same let's keep moving moving right along my second group then mag doesn't appear to be catching properly we're gonna have to take a look at that back at the studio but for now we'll deal with it as as we see fit I'll go bottom left of the bottom left not too horrible I wouldn't call that horrible but it's it could be a little bit better Ben why don't you hop on this mo and see how you shoot since we're have a little problems with these with this magazine I'm gonna single load these I'm gonna shoot top left-hand target Center tell you what having this target cameras really nice man that's similar to my first group you know three shots pretty close obviously yours are way closer same hole but wow I mean I keep going man keep going the gun fits pretty well too I'd be curious to see if it's better if we put a muzzle device on obviously this is just a thread protector so I'd be curious what it can would do if it would help or hurt the not much recoil is there no it's not bad shoot him right okay man that is some really really promising results so far with 87 yeah with the the v-max bullet I'm impressed so far you know it's a longer barrel let's keep moving on and let's maybe put a couple more down with some different types of ammo and then we'll see what we find alright guys so we're gonna move on we shot some decent groups with the 87 great v-max from Hornady and now we're gonna try the 108 grain eld match now this is a selection of ammo that we found just at some random online website I didn't want to jump in and you know throw hundreds of dollars of ammo into this thing without knowing what shoots and what doesn't shoot so I got a little bit of light stuff and a little bit of the heavier stuff let's try the heavy stuff I'm gonna go bottom center of the 6-pack tell you what that's not a bad group that's a pretty good group that's not a bad group let's put another one down I'm gonna put some more down same target bottom left you're not unimpressed with that group it doesn't seem quite the same as the 87th but let's let then shoot some and we'll see how he does with the 105 s or 108 alright here's Ben with the 108 eld match you're gonna go top of the 6-pack center center dead center on that target alright oh that last shot open that group up it looked pretty promising before then it's still not bad why don't you keep on moving and put five more on the lower left of that same target well we'll find out once we measure it we've been wrong on sizes before we've called it much larger than it actually was so we'll see we'll see what the the phone measuring app has to say about it range buddy interesting your groups have kind of a similar arc oh it's getting hot yeah okay well let's let that breathe a little bit and then we're gonna move on that high left one was me okay there's 100% me all right I'll call that right off the bat that was me definitely seeing some decent results with the 108 and with the 87 s we don't know the exact measurements yet but groups look decent on paper we've got some of Ben's 105 greenhand loads however we only have a limited amount of these so we're only going to be able to shoot one group each we have a couple extra rounds we're gonna kind of compete to see who gets to shoot those I'm gonna go first why are you laughing at me I'm gonna go center target in my row bottom right hmm okay so I certainly did not shoot the best group then why don't you go ahead and lay down some with your hand loads last one not a horrible group not what I would call great why don't you shoot the last three of those those rounds and see if you can put down a nice tight three three shot group hold the bottom point of that diamond and put them right in that same area interesting interesting see if this one goes yeah shoot it why not if you got one then thought that one was a little wonky and wasn't sure about it but he's gonna shoot it anyway dude you certainly asked for one in that same hole yeah the last last three of that group all went in that same hole I believe really nice shooting Wow yeah yeah I think we could get that load to shoot real well if we move it a little bit I think let's let's rewind and go back to those 87 s and see if we can work with them a little more and maybe maybe shoot a little better you know that v-max bullet I've always had awesome luck with a b-max bullet that's what I shoot out of my well I used to shoot it on my 243 for groundhogs really yeah that's okay good to know so again decent results right the hand loads maybe not as tight as the factory ammo but they're also not dialed for this gun so what we're gonna do is gather a little bit more data see exactly what we find to be a better bullet all-around and what we're gonna do is put down one group one more group of the varmint the 87 marine and one more group of the 108 each and then we'll go down and compare our results here we go single loading the 87 s I'm gonna go bottom row left side target top corner all right not super pumped on that group about the same as your lower left group is it yep all right so I'm not super pumped on that group but let's keep on movin see if I can fare any better with the 108 I'm gonna go Center target bottom row top left yeah I'd say those shoot a little bit better with me on the trigger I'm I'm really pleased with these 108 I'm really digging those I'm excited to see how they do at extended ranges let's collect a little bit more data Ben I think you're up really excited to see if you get similar results to what I get did you bring it down I came down to ten so I'm not shoot off the paper okay good call last one make it count all right not horrible not as good as we would like to see but not garbage by any means why don't you go ahead and put some more down with the other stuff all right 108 I'm gonna go set our target table left like those 108 I think we got our answer let's go do some measurement and then we'll wrap up our pen we did some measurements yep so we got some results there's some measurements and some results written all let's start with you up here you started here this is your first group is a 1.03 second group was a point nine three these are with the 87 grain ammo then you moved over here to a point 1 2 5 with the Hornady match ammo and then you shot one of your better groups 0.89 okay then what did we do we went to the hand loads from there yep first group of hand load 1.13 second group point 85 there's four there I'll be sure what he had that yeah then went up here to 87's again we're at one point two seven and then here with the 108's again which is 0.77 and what we did which i think is gonna be valuable for the audience out there as we kind of averaged everything out so the total average for all of the shots that Ben took was a 1.0 one five okay this is this is interesting so about an inch his average with the 87 was 1.07 and his average with the 108 the Hornet ease these three and these three was a point nine seven so between those two that's a tenth of an inch difference not much of a difference so about an inch across the board solid shooting any thoughts on the rifle uh yeah I mean it shoots them what oh it's really good I think we need to shoot some longer range and see what happens here sure I think the 108's are gonna lend themselves better it's a longer range anyway you know they're gonna buck the wind a little bit better than the 87 grain let's take a look at my groups here definitely a bigger spread my worst group up here we'll get to it in a second I started out with the 87 s with a 1.7 inch group then moved into a 1.1 3 then I moved over here and shot one of my better groups 0.71 this is with the 108 grain then 0.62 this is actually my best group of the day 0.62 and then the 1.8 - with your hand loads which is really interesting because you shot a point 1.85 and I shot an inch larger no idea how I'm blaming myself for that almost 1/2 inch larger than my biggest I'm gonna blame this it's on me we're I'm gonna take full credit for that awfulness interestingly enough I came back and shot nearly a two-inch group a 1.9 for 87 with the 87 s and then another outstanding group a point 6 4 and this one the stars aligned yeah this the stars align but but consistency wise and my average overall was a 1.0 to 7 which is really really not far off of your average across-the-board inch gun interestingly enough a 1 and a half inch average for the 87 which okay sure I didn't shoot those as well but but you're one of a great group killed it a point six five so between Ben's point nine seven and my point six five we have landed on the fact that the 108 are gonna be our extended range cartridge I'm excited to see what we can do at longer ranges why don't we walk over there and maybe maybe shoot a little
