and just five years old he lost his family when a train carried him nearly 2,000 kilometers across India he would have lived the rest of his life a homeless beggar on the streets of Calcutta if not for a loving Australian couple who adopted him but Saru never forgot his birth mother and 20 years later began a search for her it was a task everyone thought was impossible but not through in the swirling mass of humanity that he is India a nation of 1.2 billion people in countless town Saru Briley is looking for one tiny house in a nondescript village searching for his Indian family and to do it he's using Google Earth as look how can I use these images in my memory to get myself back to my family or at least try and find the town that I was from for starters the year is 2006 19 years after Saru arrived in Australia there's no not in the chain now eat it while you can stay by day the 25 year old would work with his dad John and brother mantle should the family business in Hobart at night through would go online peep spend hours sometimes not sleeping at all searching for a needle in a haystack what are you following these lines yes I did but it was sort of a stayed in the dark at this place here and i zoom down I tried to find a roadway line it's a big place it really is and he was so little slow and John Bradley adopted through when he was six hand on heart did you ever truly think through would find his birth mother well I really wanted him to so I just willed my heart to be with him in success but there was a part of you thinking there's no way you think he had nursed his chance of finding his family Calcutta was a starting point but the route was obsessed methodically he traced every railway track out of Calcutta it was a painstaking process of elimination that took the route down hundreds thousands of getting and he didn't just spend weeks or months looking Saru kept up the hunt for six years I've been searching for such a long long time that it's just like what else can I do and whales can I go then late one night he traced a single line into India's remote central western region not picked this for a way along and I thought I just have a go at it and just started tracing it the room was close very close landmark suddenly flashed between the screen and his memory a bridge near done a water tower a station with three persons and about two o'clock but I found it and you just found it just like that [Music] Kandra 1800 kilometres from Calcutta where sewers one-way train ride ended up [Music] could this really be his hometown there was only one way to know for sure The Roommate the potentially heartbreaking journey halfway around the world the boy inside led him along the old streets of his childhood how people talking to be in my head if this the right place even though collegues are taking you on the road that can I used to walk 25 26 years ago I was almost at a point where I mean I said to myself this in the place eventually the were found where he had one [Music] but there was no house just a pile of rubble why just did I put my hand on my face and just thought perhaps the worst is actually what's happened and they're not there anymore perhaps while sisters being sold off personal brothers are all dead perhaps my mother's dead too but then a stranger recognized the Ruth childhood photo and then that person said come with me take it out to your mother a few steps covered a lifetime there at the end of a lane after 26 years the words mother Fatima [Music] he'd found him it was such a shock you really found it she came forward and we hugged and and I think she was in as much if not more shocked as I was [Music] what was that moment like when she first touched you though just so comforting it was just such a long time since now she held me and for her was just I saw you once and any disappeared and now you've returned like a ghost you know how could this ever happen [Music] at 66 sytem is warmth and kindness seem to defy the toughness of her life much of its panting hard labor carrying bricks on construction sites community endless you never gave up hope that he was alive yet a demi and what articulate on I knew it in my heart in fact my children always told me to leave this neighborhood and move but I said how can I ever go away it's my son when my son comes back this is where you have to find him you can never underestimate a mother's love can you it's very powerful having you next to me is just great it says uma when Saru didn't come home all those years ago what did you think really money marriage was about that it was devastating I wish the earth to just open up and swallow me I missed my conversation I was like a madwoman [Music] but the joy of reunion is tempered by the heartbreak of loss finally Saru learns why his older brother guru never came back for him that day police had discovered his body near the railway line mangled from the impact of the train having to take that news when you heard that guru had died that day it was the biggest shock that I could have ever had I sort of found it hard to believe really you know sometimes I think whether it was it my fault had she spent all those years believing in the bottom of your heart that he was still alive and looking for you yeah I did I don't think he would have been a guy that would've given up you know he he was he was just like my mother for all the sadness there is so much to celebrate [Music] the room is reunited with his surviving brother kallu and his family me too your big brother and his younger sister shakila yeah last time you saw each other you were 2 years old so I had to take care of it it was brought about very natural guy but the Ruth family reunion isn't complete why do I think they're happy to see you back in Hobart who is preparing to fly to India for the first time how can you think a woman for what we've enjoyed all these years and what she missed out on but I'm really going to try and share some of what we had with her son as our son how did you find out that he found her he sent us a text in the middle of the night why not oh it was just her big would be we just left her bed your muscly very much it was just you know like we won the lottery really in all their life together they have never been a ride quite like this this is the village where to speak this is experience that I never ever dreams I'm so excited things to do filled with nerves nothing can prepare sue because this moment [Music] beautiful mother come along come well stenographers [Music] [Music] Oh my left little bit smelly dog there come out of this is a lot of it back just a minute we gotta get the flavor more senator he's your son take good care of him gentlemen had always hoped that somehow somewhere the rue was being cared for even love what's it like looking to the eyes the woman in dancer accessory very hot before you think I'm so happy to have remind America haven't and this moment helps through heal a quiet hurt that she's carried for 26 years but somewhere a mother's been mourning the loss of her son so I need to know did you always believe the river still alive so we've been later what either I always knew in my heart that not only was real life that he would come back to me one day either he would come back to me or I would find him I always knew this in my heart from Bernard you know let's see this is you know what I tried it no I just interested I didn't really know that once you hang on sue and Fatima will forever be in each other's lives because of the love they share the Saru what worth a buck out there well I worked up and for now there is so much to catch up on so through their usual few months in Australia nested starting school a graduation or suspension secondary school with a wedding like me so these are the two women who helped shape the man you are today it was just like this is the mother that had given me birth and this is the mother that gave me a second chance in life for the room it has been a long way home and we've planned for him to help educate his nephews and nieces as well as by Fatima a new house sewers new journey in life with his two mothers has only just begun do you see if those was an incredibly lucky person you know I couldn't be any more happier than where I am today and I couldn't be wishing for anything else what I have now is is what I wanted for a long time and that's it for me
