sustainable and well-insulated shelter for re-housing projects around the world it was designed for rapid re-housing and emergencies but can present a permanent housing solution as well eliminating the need for tents which are often discarded life shelter is constructed from curved insulation panels that give it a distinctive arched shape and ensure comfortable indoor conditions in any climate the panels can then be plastered with local materials such as clay or limestone for a more permanent and solid structure the sturdy construction sound insulation and lockable doors offer families a feeling of safety and privacy simple construction with insulation makes for a superior dwelling than a tent although a bit more expensive the life shelter makes it up with a 15 to 25 year life span making it more cost effective in the long run the design is modular making it adaptable to any size and the panels can be packed up and moved should the need arise life shelter has been stress tests for earthquakes fire and hurricanes and is suited for different climates the self-supporting shelter is easy to erect even without skilled labor and does not require any special tools only the raw stonewall panels that make up the basic structure are imported all other materials are sourced locally it is also suitable for a wide range of applications besides a shelter like a classroom storage office and many more the life shelter comes in three panel sized designs from four to six meters wide and in any floor size depending on the number of panels used reinforced panels steel floor frame and plaster give a structural quality and create comfortable internal space since 2013 the life shelter company has built hundreds of structures in 12 different countries the conestoga hut is a micro shelter for people experiencing homelessness the hut is designed as a hard shelled insulated structure that can be quickly and cheaply built by a few volunteers with little construction experience it was originally developed by the community supported shelters a non-profit with a focus on creating low-cost big impact solutions for supplying basic shelters and a supportive community to those in need conestoga huts are designed to provide a basic level of security and relief to people in need in a timely manner and cost effectively huts are weatherproof offers some insulation are mold resistant and are lockable for peace of mind when leaving the name is derived from conestoga wagons because of similarities to the covered wagons used in the exploration of the american west the huts have a 60 square foot living space with a 3 foot porch but can be built larger as well the organization offers a step-by-step manual on how to build a conestoga hut right on their website with photos and illustrations it guides you through the tools and materials you'll need the build and the assembly process and how to get the community engaged as well the cost of base materials is about a thousand dollars the community supported shelters builds one for about two and a half thousand dollars but that includes a heater smoke and carbon monoxide detector bed frame mattress other accessories and a maintenance fee currently conestoga huts have been installed at several sites in oregon and washington some of these sites are operated by community supported shelters and some are operated by other non-profit or faith-based groups that purchase the huts from css shelterbox is an international disaster relief charity from the united kingdom that provides emergency shelter and materials the estimated cost of a 10 by 16 foot shelter will run between 1 500 to 2 250. in materials shelter 2.0 was designed for efficient cnc cutting either by end users themselves or at a cnc
