[Music] hey everyone and welcome back to gal today i'm showing you six audio effects that you can do in adobe premiere pro and sound is such an important part of your editing process so spending just a little bit more time on your sound can make a huge difference so the six different effects that i'm showing you in this tutorial i've actually linked to below as time codes so you can jump ahead to a particular effect if you're in a hurry so we're going to be starting out with audio swells how to build tension and emotion through sound effects in music through the swell effect then we're going to move on to surround reverb to create ring outs on music and for dialogue [Music] and then we're going to do a fun look at pitch shifting so to make a person's voice higher so it sounds more like a chipmunk or more so it's deeper for a comedic effect and it can be done on music as well and then we're going to go into transition washes as well as underwater muffled sound and lastly but certainly not least how to make it sound like audio is coming from an intercom a radio or a television so if i'm not covering an effect that you were hoping to be featured in this video leave a comment below and i'll check it out and at the end of this video i actually feature a comment of the week where i answer a question so leave a comment to be featured and also like the video and before we jump in here is a little bit about today's sponsor epidemic sound using my link below you can get 30 days free to try out as many epidemic sounds and music as you like for any type of project epidemic really has great themes and categories to make it easy to browse for the sounds you need to use in any project and of course you can search by keyword just by typing it into the search field and then you can further refine it by clicking on various moods genres vocals length or bpm and then you can preview before you download [Music] and what i really love about it is that you can download the full mix or the stems of each music track i'll be using epidemic music and sound effects in the tutorial but if you already have your own music and sound effects you can certainly follow along with your own assets in this tutorial but if you want to try out sounds from epidemic sound you can sign up for the 30-day trial and then once you sign up for a paid plan i will make a small commission if you use my link below so that's all for epidemic sound and let's go ahead and jump into premiere pro [Music] so audio swells are great transition sound effects so if you want to go from one scene to the other to build tension or to create a smash cut to wake up the viewer you can use audio swells to create this effect let's look in the timeline so here in my timeline i have this cool dream sequence of these clowns it's supposed to be like a nightmare sequence and then it goes into the next shot of the guy waking up in a panic like he just had a nightmare well this is all visual because it's just stock video that i've put together but to make it more interesting and add more emotion and tension i can use sound to create an audio swell up to the point where he wakes up so to create the swell i'm going to use a crash symbol effect from epidemic sound so in epidemic sound i'm going to search for the crash symbol and then you can go in here and you can search for the one that works best for you we can play a couple here [Music] so the hit simple crash definitely works best i'm going to download this one what's really cool about epidemic sound is that it'll actually show you which ones you've listened to by graying them out which i haven't seen on any other sites before so it just makes it easier to download the sound that you need so i've imported the sound effect into my sound effects folder and i'm just going to drag the hit symbol crash onto audio layer 1. now the key here is to reverse the symbol crash so it's not playing normally but instead backwards so let's go ahead and just expand this audio track here so you can see the waveform and i'm going to right click on this and select speed and duration and this is where i'm going to check reverse speed and then hit ok and now you can see the audio waveform was flipped so now let's go ahead and align this audio clip to end right before he wakes up so to do that we first need to trim off a little bit from the front just by rolling this back and then i'll move it to snap to this cut point right before he wakes up so if you don't have a snap tool on just make sure to click snap in timeline so that way the audio clip aligns directly with the video so let's go ahead and play it back just to hear what it sounds like so already there's a lot more tension but we can add music and some human breaths for when he's waking up to make it more intense so i've downloaded a music track called killer clown from epidemic sound and i'm going to drag and drop this onto audio layer 2 and if i expand audio layer 2 you can see that the music actually doesn't start until about a second in so i'm going to roll this in and then move it over so the music starts right away and then i'm going to hit c on my keyboard to cut at this cut point and then hit v on my keyboard to go back to the selection tool and just delete off the excess music so if we play back you can hear that the music kind of sounds upbeat to give it more of a dark vibe i'm going to select the music track and then go up to effects and search for pitch shifter and drag this on to the music clip then from effect controls from the edit button you can choose a preset called the dark lord and all this does is give it a more dark feel so now if we play it back it just feels more like a nightmare [Music] so it added the distortion and so there's a contrast now between the swell and the music to just the silence [Music] of him waking up but to add a little bit more realism here let's add some breath so i downloaded a human breath sound effect from epidemic sound and i'm going to drag this onto audio layer 3 and this is the final effect so all of these sounds together created a build up of tension that we didn't have before and it ultimately created a smash cut which was a contrast between the previous shot in the next shot and if you watch any television shows and you look for these audio swells you'll probably notice smash cuts happening where you're literally woken up by the sound that's all for the audio as well let's go ahead and jump into the ring out effect [Music] adding ring out to music is often done in documentary films or in standard films to transition from one scene to the other or to add some drama another way that it's used is just to shorten a music track so if you want it to end at a certain point you can use the surround reverb effect to wring it out so let's jump into premiere so to create this effect what i did was i cut out the word blue when it was said so i made a marker here in my timeline by pressing m on my keyboard at the moment that the word blue starts so i'm going to hit c and then make a cut here and then i'm going to scrub through and listen to when the word blue ends and i'll make another cut [Applause] and i'll hit c again and cut and i will go back to the selection tool by hitting v and select the excess and hit delete so now we've isolated the word blue here and we're going to nest it to create the effect so right click then select nest and we can call it anything let's call it nested blue and hit ok and then to open up this nested sequence double click and now it's in its own sequence so here in this nested sequence we need to create an empty sound handle and the handle will be how long we want the reverb to last so what we can do is we can place any audio clip on audio layer 2. in this case i'll just duplicate this audio layer 1 clip so let's hold option click and release and now it's duplicated and then i can roll this out to the duration i want the reverb effect to be so around six seconds let's say and this audio clip it doesn't matter what it is because we're going to mute it this is just going to be an empty handle from this point all the way to six seconds so now if we go back to the ring out demo we can actually roll this out and you'll see now that it's actually empty so here's where the audio stops and then it has this empty space so before we add the reverb effect let's also be sure to go back to the nested blue and let's add a fade out to audio layer one so i like to use exponential fade of course you can create your own keyframes to fade out the audio and then i'll drag and drop exponential fade on the end of this clip and then i'll select the transition and i'll just make it shorter so it fades out just at the end now if we go back to ring out demo and now we need to apply the surround reverb effect to this nested audio clip so let's go up to effects and search for surround reverb drag and drop it and then from the effect controls panel select edit and here we can choose from a variety of different presets now there's a bunch of cool ones to choose from there's center stage there's some fun ones down here trapped in a well but i found that the funny one here gnome in my dome actually works really well so i'm going to select that and then close this out and then i'm going to play it back so you can hear the effect [Music] [Applause] [Music] so when you listen back you probably heard between this point and this point after the cut there seemed to be a drop in volume that was noticeable so to fix that we can actually use constant gain so if we search for constant gain we can drag and drop that here and it should have the same volume level through that cut [Music] [Applause] [Music] so that is how you create a ring out effect on audio using surround reverb but you can also do the exact same with just dialogue so if i go back to ring out final i actually downloaded this funny audio clip of this guy saying subscribe now from epidemic sound and all i did was apply the same steps that i just showed you with the music but i cut out the word now and i added a surround reverb and this is what it sounds like subscribe now and the original just was this subscribe now so you can hear the difference subscribe now that's all for the ring out effect now let's go on to the chipmunk high pitched effect here in my timeline i have a hip-hop rap song from epidemic sound called curveball and rather than pitching up the entire song the full mix what i've done is i've actually downloaded the stems from epidemic sound so this will allow me to isolate just the melody of the guy wrapping which is on audio layer one and i've placed the different instruments on two three and four so i can actually mute these and you can play just the vocal so let me just play this so you can hear the original hey bill i'm in the mood for a switch up i hit the function hit the rosette till i hiccup now if you wanted to pitch shift up like a chipmunk all i would do is go up to effects and search for pitch shifter and i'm going to double click to apply it and then go to edit from effect controls and all we're going to do is click on the circle and move it to the right to increase the semitones and let me just move this window over and let me play it back for you and let me play it back and i'll just move the semitone so you can hear the results as i play it back in the moon i hit the stage so as i move the semi-tone slider to the right it makes the voice higher as i move it to the left it just deepened the voice so you can have a lot of fun by playing around with the semi-tones you can also use some of the presets here you can use the angry gerbil to create a fun chipmunk effect so i'm just going to leave this at 11 for now and what's really cool is if you really want to be able to have the original wrapper sing with a chipmunk you can actually cut out different lines so let's say we wanted the first line to be the original wrapper we can actually zoom in on the timeline here and make a cut by pressing c and just cut right there and then we can go back to the selection tool by hitting v and then we'll just turn off the pitch shifter here and we'll make another cut here and here and same thing i'll select this one and just turn off the pitch shifter so now if i play it back with the musical tracks on i'll just unmute that and let's play so this is how you can apply it to a vocal track of a song using the epidemic sound stems but you can apply the same effect to just a dialogue track let's say for a film or a tv show [Music] so here i have this nice push transition between these two clips and this push transition is by film impact and the reason why i like the plug-in tool better than the built-in push is because the film impact transition allows me to add blur and chromatic aberrations which you cannot get with the built-in tool so to make this more dynamic let's add in a whoosh sound effect so i downloaded this sound effect from epidemic called the whip whoosh and it sounds like this and i'm just going to drag this into my timeline here and let me zoom in and let me nudge it over so the sound is aligned with the cut so hold the option key and use the arrow bracket tools just to nudge it over so if i hit the left arrow i'll just nudge it over like that and to the right you can nudge it over until it's aligned and let's go ahead and listen to see how this sounds alright that sounds pretty good what we can do to make this more interesting of a transition is add music and some underwater sounds and what's really cool with adding music is you can add a low pass effect to make it sound more muffled like it's underwater so let's go to the music track i downloaded it's called the libertalia and let's drag and drop this here and let's just cut this off and delete excess here so what we want to do is make it seem like the water is taking a dive underwater so we can keyframe the low pass effect so first let's go and apply the low pass effect by searching for it and then double clicking to apply it then go to effect controls and here is the low pass so the cutoff represents the distortion the lower the number the more distortion and muffled sound there is and the higher it goes the less distorted so the highest it goes to which is around 23 000 hertz means that there's no distortion so what we can do is we can move our playhead back to this point and right as the transition is happening we can create a keyframe here but first let's remove the distortion so let's just type in 24 000 and it will lower it to the exact cut off maximum so now there's no distortion at all now select the stopwatch here to create a keyframe and then let's move a couple frames over until we're underwater and let's bring the cutoff down to around 750 to add more muffled sound so now let's play it back and listen to the change in the music from being normal to sounding more muffled underwater pretty cool right let's play that one more time [Music] so using the low pass filter effect can make your underwater scenes far more dynamic and lastly but certainly not least let's go on to creating some old radio tv and intercom effects [Applause] so here i have this old britannia music track from epidemic sound let me just play this for you [Music] and let's say you wanted to make this sound like it was coming from an older radio well from the essential sound panel there's actually some built-in presets that allow you to make it sound like any type of audio whether it's dialogue or music or sound effects sound like it's coming from a certain type of technology so in this case if we wanted to try the old radio sound rather than going and selecting music as the dialog type which is normally what you would do i actually hack the system and i choose dialog instead and this is where i go to preset and i'm going to choose from the radio and you can see how immediately the audio waveform changed we can actually remove the loudness change because we don't want it to auto match to the dialog loudness we can play around with the volume controls to make it the ideal loudness for music but in this case it added some dynamics and it added an old radio preset eq as well as a creative reverb now you can change any of these presets so for example if you wanted the radio to play let's say in an auditorium you can change it to auditorium instead and you can increase the amount let's increase it up a little bit and from effect controls you'll see that what the essential sound panel did was apply all these effects automatically to the clip so you didn't have to go and dig up and figure out what dynamic processing did or graphic equalizers or studio reverb it takes care of it all for you here in the essential sound panel so we can go ahead and play this back to see how it sounds so it sounds like it's coming from a radio and as i play it back i if i increase the reverb you can hear the [Music] [Applause] difference [Music] so that is how you can make it sound like it's coming from the radio but of course you can also go up to the preset here and change it to let's say let's try over the intercom and let's see how this sounds [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] so you can go up to preset and try out from the radio from the telephone from television or the intercom to create some pretty cool effects for your films or television shows or any other effects that you're creating so that's all for this video if these audio effects helped you out be sure to give this video a big thumbs up it helps the channel it helps the growth to spread these effects and now it's time for the comment of the week this week's comment is from alternatingbitmusic he wrote nicely done you happen to have one of the most relaxing tutorial voices you sound like vera farmiga well that's a nice compliment thank you does convert to smart object layer essential to this process i saw another tutorial that didn't have that step also this is a lot trickier trickier with thin serif fonts the curve adjustments eat away the letters so this is in this is referring to my tutorial on how to take a low res logo and turn it into a vector and so yes turning it into a smart object allows you to apply uh the smart filters to it which i detail in the tutorial and so yes you are right it is more difficult to do this with fonts and logos that have very thin serif fonts if a logo is really low res in that case i would just recommend starting from scratch because sometimes it's more difficult to make it into a vector again as opposed to just sketching out a new logo and converting it into a vector and i actually have a whole tutorial on how to sketch your logo and turn it into a high res vector just using your phone and a few tweaks inside of photoshop so definitely check that out um and yet so that's all for this video thanks again for everybody for watching and to epidemic sound for sponsoring this video don't forget to try out 30 days free of their music and sound effects it's a great deal use my link below and check it out and that's all i'll see you guys next time bye oh god that was cool
