oahu is the undisputed best flying island for hiking no question so we have compiled our five favorite easy to intermediate hikes for your trip to oahu our favorite five hikes on oahu are we have the judge trail with jackass ginger pool great name coco crater diamond head maka point lighthouse trail a hukai pillbox hike and as a bonus the best sunrise hike on oahu hi i'm jordan and i'm erica and this is the hawaii vacation guide [Music] oahu doesn't have like easy hikes like maui does they're a little more strenuous if you want no elevation gains paved paths really easy going hikes maybe stick to the cholina boardwalk walking waikiki and the streets around there those are like the easy walks to do if you want to get out in nature though and escape waikiki they definitely recommend checking out these hikes but just get ready for some elevation gains slippery slopes if you got bad knees maybe stay at home it gets a little tough but we took our son henry our toddler on all these hikes and we survived we sure did and we had a great time and one quick psa before we get into the best hike just remember to come out here treat the land with respect so that means making sure you pack in and pack out don't leave anything behind on the trail pick up trash if you see it that's always a plus and then know that there are mosquitoes but be really hesitant about when you use bug spray because you don't want to use bug spray and jump in the water and have to get in the water and contaminate so just be really mindful about how you use different chemicals out here and the tap water in hawaii is delicious so bring a water bottle and you can just refill instead of buying plastic ones when you're out here if you want to know how these oahu hikes fit into your itinerary check out our website hawaiivacationguy.com for free itineraries for your trip out here without further ado here's our five favorite hikes [Music] okay so we waited out the rain it's nice now it's a little cloudy but it's fine so today we are doing the judd trail to the jackass ginger pool which sounds awesome right that's why we're really doing this the jackass ginger pool yeah because there used to be a donkey apparently that lived over here so it's named after him trailhead's right off the street google maps will take you right here there's no donkeys here we don't see it round trip there's a trail is a mile long it's relatively easy just follows the creek and ends in the jackass ginger pool cool we're out of the bamboo forest and then to a pine forest now as we kind of hike up above the creek so we thought they troll in a loop because there's a sign like it says like go left or go right no no no no no no no no was the wrong way we got lost so we had to double back just follow the creek this is a nice trail it is a it's a mud fest out here jordan really needs tevas is this a pitch to the tip of a company these just aren't cutting it but look at me i'm solid he's jealous it is a mudfest nice little pool nice little waterfall so there are actually tons of trails coming off of this main trail we did the jackass ginger pool um hike but you can also go up a ridge so yeah tons of different places to hike if you go up it probably won't be quite as muddy as what we experienced so neighborhood got slow there she is it's like an easy hike straight up straight up so good news there is a leonard's uh malasada like food truck uh right when you pull into hawaii kai so if you can't get waikiki can grab here so we're at coco head crater right now this is a parking lot behind me lots of people already going up it's right across from hanama bay it's eight miles from waikiki so it's an easy one but as you can tell this is not gonna be an easy hike especially probably karen henry the whole way so but it's gonna be fun here we go all right so begin the trail starts off pretty easy nice little pavement part and then it goes up there and he's looking for the choo choo train because we got train tracks the hike and the foundation looks like they're repairing the tracks the coconut coalition is repairing the tracks so people can continue to hike i know i am not wearing my slippers on this hike a lot of people come here for sunrise so a lot guys are coming down already that was good buddy i like to learn the history why there's a train here though i wonder if it's for military attack he wants to go to tipia top but it's way up there you know what we got a lot to do today i'm not tired at all no it's not because of that but as you go up you kind of see that horseshoe right there that's phenomenal bay so that's where we're going to head to now do a little swimming we're coming down now the steps make it easy that's why this is an advanced hike it's intermediate it's just when you're carrying a two-year-old makes it hard to get to the tippy top our third favorite hike and the one we used to do all the time when we lived on oahu is lei ahi or diamond head as it's more popular known as there's a parking lot it's a decent size but it does fill up like right now it's only like 8 15 8 30. it's already full shoes for the hike erica's strapping up her tabas once again i'm actually putting them on properly i know i feel like this is the jordan hike index on the severity of the hike i am wearing my shoes again today so that means it is a medium hike i must say i would wear my slippers but it gets a little slippery in some spots all right we are carbo loading for this hike cargo loading the beginning of the hike oh we got full rainbow that goes in the crater buddy and then goes out of the crater you see the rainbow bed that's pretty cool this is 0.8 miles 560 feet elevation gain we can do this we did this last year with henry we had a nice little baby carrier because he was 20 months old now he's a little bigger it's a little hard to this he's got a lot of carrying we got a lot of carrying i thought he'd be walking more yeah we can walk more you see lots of kids out on this hike that's what we recommend it for kids all right that's where we're going tippy top you see the bunkers up there and all the people up in the observation deck we are having fun we're having a good time in the rain enjoying ourselves not complaining [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] all right we are off so the trail heads up there for parking there's a lot of parking available it fills up there's a wednesday afternoon it's a nice path for a stroller we just passed the family they looked happy so compared to maui oahu easy hikes are on the easy to moderate level because this one is still steep but there's a nice walking trail the internet says it's one and a half to two and a half miles we'll double check to see what it is you see it's a really nice paved trail and it's got great views as you go up or just at the beginning it would be no big deal if you're not pushing 30 pounds up the hill you're doing great thank you okay so nice view from the makapuu trail you got diamond head right there you got coco crater which the cocoa botanical garden is inside the crater you also got sandy beach down there and hanama bay is right around there in the tradition of easy hikes i got my slippers on erica has her tevas on and yeah i'm feeling pretty good in these feeling pretty good in yours when's teva going to send us a free pair of tubbus [Music] so this hike is also a great way to look for whales from shore on oahu they're on this side and it's whale caesar right now because it's december [Music] all right 19th the hike [Music] so we did it it took about an hour for us we're moving pretty fast it's about a two degree climb like the whole way so like makes it a good little like two three degrees i did my protractor so it's really hard to tell don't wanna we're doing the a hookah pillbox hike it is right at bonsai pipeline beach and you can park right in front of the sunset elementary school this is a fun little trail it's easy to moderate if it's raining i'd say it's moderate because it gets slippery in some spots it is great for sunsets this is what this hike is known for is sitting on top of the pillow box and watching the sun go down okay we are starting to climb hold on tight everybody you holding on henry yeah that's it that's how you climb so eric is rocking her tevas on this hike i am not wearing my slippers i'm actually wearing shoes which is very challenging for me and henry has his hiking shoes on also it's definitely a up a hill definitely up a hill it's got a few ropes along the way make it a little easier he's a nice little guy huh he's little there we go hear the waves crashing down there all right the trail is flattened out that's a good sign we're getting closer to the pillbox this is a pretty cool hike it's only about three quarters a mile up it's steep for the first like two thirds but then it really flattens out so it's really nice and you get these great views i can see why this place is so perfect for sunset make the hike up here just bring lights for the way down can get slippery so that's why it's a moderate hike plus it's steep but with our toddler and there's some other kids on the trail too but just use your best judgment for it if you got bad knees probably bring walking sticks probably a good idea it's one of the most picturesque beautiful hikes on oahu is the lanikai pillbox hike or better known as the kaivo ridge trail we love this hike because you get some of the most picturesque views of our favorite beach lanikai beach you also get great views of the moks out there and it's steep but it's only about what 60 to 90 minutes of a hike the first pillbox is only 20 30 minutes in so you can end the trail right there but you get beautiful views also known for a beautiful sunrise one thing with this hike you do want to come early you don't have to come for sunrise we're here about nine o'clock a lot of people already on the trail also parking gets tough in lanakai same with the lanikai beach parking can get tough you gotta respect the neighbors because you gotta park on the street so don't block any driveways get your car over to the side if they're parked down the hill trailhead's pretty easy to spot you can take google maps to right here oh it's steep that's right strenuous so where's closed those shoes there's some ropes to help out along the way lots of ropes to help out along the way and just do what you can handle thank you so much for watching um we hope you got some great ideas for hikes here if you want to know how to fit these hikes into your itinerary head to hawaiivacationguys.com oahu and you will find a lot of information to help you plus our website just has a ton of information to help you plan a great trip to hawaii so
