[Music] hello and welcome back to ewtn's continuing coverage of the 52nd international eucharistic congress from here in budapest hungary i'm matthew bunson executive editor of ewtn news joined as always by father john paul mary of the franciscan missionaries of the eternal word we've been on this journey together and we're not even halfway through today so it's been a great week just to reflect upon uh to grow in our love and devotion to um the eucharistic king eucharistic lord these days over the last three days have followed a distinctive pattern of morning prayer of catechesis of testimony and then various workshops all of course with our focus on the real presence of the blessed sacrament it has also included mass every day but today we're doing things a little differently there's going to be a very special mass today and the divine liturgy of saint john chrysostom and some of our viewers may be familiar with that we have a large viewing audience that are probably eastern right catholics so i think uh it'll be very exciting for them to experience the liturgy uh as it has been for centuries uh not much has changed uh when it comes to this liturgy that's right that the liturgy of saint john chrysostom by tradition i think dates back to around the fifth century uh and it is uh named after one of the great doctors of the church one of the most powerful preachers of his time uh and uh a rather spectacular liturgist as uh we can see with the divine liturgy for those who may not be familiar with it the divine liturgy is to put it very colloquially with no offense intended in any way to our eastern catholic brothers and sisters it is the mass that would be most familiar to those who are part of the eastern catholic traditions yes and i think it it's worth mentioning for those of our viewing audience for those who may be watching all around the world that term participation we've been coming back to the the phrases of the second vatican council full active conscious participation and our petition our participation in mass we may not be able to understand um by our senses what's going on at mass and even by sometimes words uh it's going to be in a different language obviously it's going to be in in the original language as it was written so and pretty much all of it is going to be chanted exactly so for our viewing audience to don't let that um you know hold you back from uh participating in the mass reverently i think we try and communicate this to our audience through ewtn sometimes we have latin that's right the universal language of the church and i think that they can participate in the mass even though um you know they may not unders understand what's going on even though they don't understand the language really ask the holy spirit to draw you into the mysteries of being that's what what's taking place on the altar right and it's uh might be helpful to remember too that this is um a catholic liturgy yes uh that the eastern catholic churches are more than 20 of them in the church we we tend to think understandably of the latin right and yet there are other rights within the catholic church that are beautiful that are truly ancient and that we revere as catholics it's just many different expressions of worshiping the one true god to giving god what is right and just and you actually hear that within the context of the liturgy right often in eastern rites uh parts of what we say in our what we call the holy mass holy sacrifice of the mass in the divine liturgy you you'll hear different phrases that are very similar but it's always uh important for us to come back to the that that the same thing the same sacrifice of calvary in an unbloody manner is being made present on the altar right same mass and in much the same way as uh the mass of the latin rite uh is constructed deliberately around the eucharistic the liturgy of the eucharist so to the anaphora is intended that is the liturgy of the eucharist in a divine liturgy so the the reverence the importance of that is there i think those you'll see our viewers will see by the gestures of the mass the vestments that the priest wears uh the icons that are used everything is important just like in um in the latin rite the gestures the posture uh the orientation of the mass everything is important everything so they will see in in the eastern right of the mass even more uh symbolism right i think even more um i think they'll they'll really appreciate the reverence uh that is shown and there are several rights that are honored within the eastern catholic churches or the for example the the byzantine right is the one that we're going to be seeing tonight and those are important uh because each of those represents that liturgical tradition of the individual eastern catholic churches and all of the eastern catholic churches belong to at least one of those liturgical rights yes and we'll see um that particular expression of the mass you know it is right and just you know giving god glory and praise and honor and do you know so we have the alexandrian right for example the armenian right just to name one or two and that that gives us an opportunity to to reflect on the fact that if we look at the history of the eastern catholic churches what the members of those churches have endured over the centuries in order to be in union with with rome uh i think the suffering for example of so many of the byzantine catholics uh in the lands of the orthodox reason yeah i think i'm not a uh a scholar of history i think you can probably enumerate upon this greater than i um but i do have a great love for uh the eastern right and a great respect for you know the way they worship the lord and their expression of of divine worship i love i love that that phrase alone divine liturgy that says a lot it has a lot packed in it well we uh had the opportunity to listen uh yesterday to cardinal rafael sacco the caldean uh babylonian patriarch and that is a perfect example of one of the eastern catholic churches that has suffered almost immeasurably over the last years in iraq and into syria at the hands of isis at the hands of militant jihadists there has been the forced flight the terrible suffering of the iraqi christians there many of them are also latin but many also belong to these eastern catholic churches and they have suffered in a way that might be unimaginable to those of us in the west we spoke the other day about you know pray brethren that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father and the same principle is within the liturgy whether east or west is that we bring what we have to offer to god and a lot a lot of the times and persecuted christians of course in in countries they they bring their sufferings they bring their sufferings to god mother angelica would often say that there is no such thing as wasted suffering right that in the lord that suffering is always renewed suffering is always brought to a higher level you know with jesus when we unite our sufferings and even other people's sufferings it has it doesn't have to be our own sufferings it could be the suffering of a loved one uh of of of a parent uh of a sibling of an uncle you bring that and offer it to the lord and he transforms it he changes it yeah and some of the names of the eastern catholic churches we've heard quite a bit others might be a little strange to some of us the cyril malabar for example you may not have really encountered and yet we see them present even in the united states in part because of the migration of the u.s in part also because of the the flight that they've had to have and from different parts of the world so again this is an opportunity for us to celebrate the eastern catholic churches but also to recognize them as an important part of our church our universal church and uh they also have uh they are subject to the laws of the church as everyone else the the code of canons of the eastern churches it's a i have a copy and it's very thick of laws and specific to them but it's a recognition that they also are part of the church and deserve that respect we want to recognize also the maronite right that's right the melkite right in birmingham we have seen elias catholic church which is maronite that's right we have st george which is melkite and a large number throughout the world of eastern right catholics that may be watching uh we want to you know tell you that how much you know we we love you and that we are one body in christ all right i think that when we come to mass we need to recognize that it's the eucharist that makes us one and that the church uh breathes with two lungs and not just the western right sometimes you know we can there can be a tendency to focus so much on what's going on the western right of the church that the eastern right gets you know kind of not pushed away but forgotten about right but john paul the second was very clear well they need both and there's there is confusion too uh even among many catholics they tend to think all of the eastern catholics or eastern also somehow belong to the orthodox that simply isn't the case not true these are churches that are in union with rome yes and we certainly pray and hope for the day through ecumenical dialogue uh that the day will come when all of us as the title of john paul the second famous work we're doing him sin that that will come uh but for now we have that division that we're working toward but we also have these magnificent eastern catholic churches that was the prayer of jesus in john chapter 17 that they may all be one you know father as i am in you as in you are in me you know that we all may be one and jesus knew and foresaw that there would be separated brethren yeah you know from the very beginning he saw it so here we are again at an international eucharistic congress we have some of the representatives the eastern catholics here we're going to see tonight in the divine liturgy the real presence and that meditation on the real presence gives us a great opportunity to consider in the history of the church eucharistic miracles one in particular is uh quite notable and that is the miracle of lynchiano it took place in the uh eighth century and this is a chance for us uh to take a look a little more closely at that eucharistic miracle friars miner had arrived in lanciano in 1254 replacing the small benedictine community that had lived and served at the church of saint longinus for almost a century the franciscans decided to build a new church in convent the one we see today though it houses the miraculous host now the miracle itself did not occur here to see the actual site of the miracle we must wander through the caverns of the lower level to where archaeologists have uncovered the floor and the apps of the church of saint longinus and domitian built in the 6th century it was here right in this area that would have been the sanctuary that the bread and wine consecrated at mass turned into tangible flesh and blood the ruins of the ancient church are a testimony to the antiquity of the miracle the miraculous event itself the circumstances in the moment the miracle happened is straightforward one of the monks entered the church of saint longinus to say mass but his faith was weak he was according to later recounting of the story a monk who is not firm in faith literate in the sciences of the world but ignorant of those of god restless and worldly he had for some time doubted whether the consecrated host was the true body of christ in the wine there was true blood that day though when he pronounced the words of consecration the white house suddenly warmed in his hands began turning pink dark red and fleshy [Music] the wine in the chalice also darkened to a deep blood red [Music] the priest was lost in wonder but when he came to he turned to the congregation and crying showed them the miraculous host saying oh happy assistance to whom the blessed god wanted to confuse my incredulity to reveal himself in this most holy sacrament and make himself visible to your eyes come brothers and look at our god made close to us according to catholic belief at every mass when the priest pronounces the words of jesus at the last supper this is my body which will be given up for you and this is the cup of my blood the blood of the new and everlasting covenant the host and wine transformed truly into the body and blood of christ as the great theologian saint thomas aquinas explained normally this changes only in the substance the accidents the appearance of the bread and wine remain unchanged thomas called this change in essence without a change in appearance trans substantiation even though the appearance of the bread and wine remain they have been substantially changed into the body and blood of christ this in itself is indeed a miracle every mass is a miracle but on the altar of lonziano that day 1200 years ago god went a step further and allowed the true substance of the eucharist as the body and blood of christ to be seen and felt and the miracle continues to this day well that is a beautiful clip from a series that we have a program of explorer with the miracle hunter and father uh the eucharistic miracles throughout history this is just one of many that have been documented hundreds uh one of the things that uh was so fascinating to me when i came back into the church in 1997 when i was 21 years old was the reality of eucharistic miracles in the church and i thought why didn't anybody tell me about these things uh i think for a child to hear about eucharistic miracles i think that would be you know would uh create wonder within a child um but when i started to hear about that there were really eucharistic miracles taking place that really the the bread and the wine as we know they're they are transformed on the altar at every mass that's right you know let's just say that you know i just want to say that every mass is a miracle that takes place there's a huge grossing miracle that takes place at every mass one just happened a couple hours ago when we when i offered mass but there have been these miracles that have taken place that the bread and wine have been actually literally outwardly transformed into flesh and blood and that was what we saw in the eucharistic miracle of lanciano italy it's amazing i i the first the first time i remember reading about it it just it just blew my mind away it just opened me up to a whole different level of understanding of the mass and we see throughout history eucharistic miracles occurring uh oftentimes in in moments in people's lives priests lives when they might have been doubting and that's the case with the miracle of lonziano it was a brazilian monk who was doubting his uh really his vocation he was if you read the story he was kind of living a double life he was going about his priesthood and then he was going about his other business as well but within the context of celebration of the holy mass that the bread cha changed into christ real literally body and blood you know literally uh the bread turned into real flesh living flesh and that uh the wine turned into christ's blood on the altar before him and to this day and that's one of the miracles also besides uh that it that it has literally for all these years i believe what 700 plus years that it has remained intact that still when you go there to lanciana you can revere the real flesh and they have actually done scientific studies on this which people can look into that as well the eucharistic miracle lonziano and to see the scientific evidence that this is real flesh myocardium which is literally the flesh inside the center of one's heart right that's fascinating to me and it's also uh an important reminder you said something just a couple minutes ago as we started this conversation about eucharistic miracles and that is a miracle that happens at every mass every day it shouldn't take a eucharistic miracle uh in front of our eyes they happen yes but it shouldn't take that miracle for us to believe in the real presence no uh the the miracle of belief in the real presence and that's that's something to pray for a lot of people pray at mass the prayer of saint thomas my lord and my god you know when the risen christ came in and revealed himself to thomas uh and said you know thomas do do not doubt no longer but believe you know put your hands into my flesh and recognize that that i am you know i am the risen one and thomas says my lord and my god a lot of people say that when interiorly in their hearts they don't say it out loud but at the moment of elevation of the sacred host and the precious chalice precious blood people will say my lord and my god you know they will recognize that what has taken place how appropriate they were quoting thomas literally and from that sense too uh help all of us to takes a few steps in coming to that deeper realization of the real presence what can we do on a practical level every day and when we go to mass hopefully every day when we go to mass to do that better number one i would say first of all to prepare yourself for mass preparation for mass when does that begin not when we get to mass um a minute or two ahead of time but i wouldn't even recommend to getting getting to mass about five minutes ahead of time ten minutes ahead of time too quiet yourself because a lot of times we are find ourselves real busy rushing to mass and getting to mass right on time or even late and we wonder why we are distracted right but we need to prepare ourselves well and and that means a prep the preparation for mass begins uh and i'm talking about sunday mass not just daily mass primarily sunday mass is read the readings before you get to mass don't just wait to get to mass to hear the readings that way you can kind of soak it in throughout the week and i recommend reading them about you know one or two maybe even three times know what you're going to hear know what you're going to hear so that you can be attentive to the word of god and also besides preparation for mass thanksgiving don't be so quick to get out of the pew and to follow father back and to shake his hand i mean everybody wants to to say hi to father and have their time with father i think that's that's the time when most people have contact with the uh priest is at the end of mass um and that's a special time i think it but i think that people should spend at least two to three minutes in thanksgiving right after mass to to sit down or to kneel down and to say you know an honest prayer of thanksgiving saint thomas aquinas has a beautiful one that can be looked up online as well saint thomas aquinas prayer for after holy communion people can find that very easily part of it too is making certain that you're there before mass starts yes you're not walking in you know then you hear people say well i got there before the gospel that's a pretty completely inappropriate uh and and something that we you do need to avoid uh you've got to make a deliberate choice to go to mass but if you're going to do that you've got to get there at a time that is really appropriate yes and you know obviously there's going to be some circumstances if somebody is sick yes you're taking care of of a loved one uh maybe even sometimes that somebody um can't get the mass because they're taking care of a sick parent right a sick child and you know that person should know that they are dispensed you know from the obligation of going to mass because they're they're taking care of their loved one but at the same time they can pray a spiritual communion that's right you know lord please i i cannot be present physically but i desire to receive the spiritual benefits into you into my heart the benefits of holy communion yeah and that uh idea of making certain that you're familiar with the readings before you arrive so that uh there are going to be inevitably distractions uh during mass it's just the nature of being human uh and to be prepared for what's coming in terms of the reading but then also to be very self-conscious of all right the liturgy of the eucharist uh you talked about the gestures and the symbols yeah at the shrine even in hanceville um it's so the sisters have such um angelic voices i would say um and i had the privilege of celebrating mass on ewtn every day where we have a literally a choir that is professionally trained yeah so it's sacred music all the time i have that privilege and benefit right all the signs all the gestures are important and well we are here right now waiting for the start of the divine liturgy from saint stephen's cathedral here in budapest the chief celebrant is going to be his beatitude yusuf absi of the melkite catholic church we have posted a translation of the divine liturgy of saint john chris system on our website so you can go to ewtn.com forward slash iec that's ewtn.com forward slash iec and also ewtn.com forward slash liturgy ewtn.com forward slash liturgy where you can download this you can read this online uh as the divine liturgy is being celebrated tonight the patriarch of the melkites yusuf absi was i think appointed around 2017 and this is another of the great suffering communities uh in the catholic church around the world who have been facing persecution and immense difficulties so for him to be here i think is uh an important gesture and again we were talking earlier about the significance of the eastern catholic churches i think this is a great opportunity for those of us in a different tradition uh to really see uh the beauty of the universal church it's an affirmation to them that they're important that the way that they worship god is uh very important and held up in high esteem in the church now one aspect about uh this mass is uh that it is going to be in a different language we talked about that there will not be a formal translation provided uh the homily will be translated so that's something to look for but we really want to present this as an experience as though you were there adding to i think the richness of what's about to happen yeah and like i said try and take in the the gestures um pay attention to different icons the incense everything is important everything has a very specific meaning so so really as the holy spirit during the liturgy i think we should do this in every liturgy every mass every divine liturgy that we attend is to ask the holy spirit to help us to understand to help us to believe right that was actually the reading from morning prayer this morning from uh isaiah chapter 11 was the prophecy of uh the gifts of the holy spirit you know receiving the gifts of wisdom knowledge understanding counsel fortitude piety and fear of the lord yeah and uh take this chance too to research more about the eastern catholic churches go to ewtn.com for example and and look at the history the the rich history of just the melkite church for example uh dating all the way back to the third and fourth centuries uh these are truly ancient churches i think take a chance too that your your diocese probably around you wherever you're at probably has eastern catholic churches in full communion with the catholic church that you can go to i think it's always it's good for a latin right catholic to go to an eastern right catholic divine liturgy that's right you know to reach out to them to you may have friends that are eastern right ask them go ask them to go to mass ask them to go to divine liturgy right and to help you go through this yeah the experience well this is the last event that uh will be held today as part of today's international eucharistic congress the theme of the day is patience uh briefly uh it looks as though we're about to start so we go to saint stephen's basilica in the divine liturgy of saint john chrysostom [Music] so thank so [Music] so [Music] estragom giving his welcome to the eastern catholics who are here celebrating the fact that the eastern catholic churches are such an important part of the universal catholic church christianity [Music] his greeting to the eastern catholics here in particular the chief celebrant is beatitude yusuf obsi of the melkite catholic church this is a beautiful setting for this mass this is of course the co-cathedral church of the archdiocese of budapest esta gum and it includes in it uh a reliquary a relic of what is called the holy dexter the right hand of saint stephen the first of hungary who brought christianity uh to hungary and is considered one of the great saints the greatest saint in the history of hungary along with the such renowned figures as elizabeth of hungary this is a church of intense significance and one of the reasons why this divine liturgy was held here tonight foreign [Music] [Music] mmm [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] senior senior philippians [Music] have this mind among yourselves which is yours in christ jesus who though he was in the form of god did not count equality with god a thing to be grasped but emptied himself by taking the form of the servant being born in the likeness of man and being found in human form he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death even therefore a cross therefore god has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name so that at the name of jesus every knee should bow in heaven and on earth and under the earth and every tongue confess that jesus christ is lord through the glory of god [Music] [Music] these boys [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] oh [Music] others [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] oh [Music] m [Music] m [Music] foreign [Music] is [Music] is [Music] now as they went on their way jesus entered the village and the woman named martha welcomed him into her house and she had a sister called mary who sat at the lord's feet and listened to his teaching but martha was distracted much serving and she went up to him and said lord do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone tell her then to help me but the lord answered her martha marta you are anxious and troubled about many things but one thing is necessary mary has chosen the good portion which will not be taken away from her as he said these things a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him blessed is the womb that bore you and the breast at which you nursed but he said blessed rather are those who hear the word of the god and keep it [Music] um the homily will be delivered by metropolitan philippe cochise of hyderabad foreign [Music] this is the lord's day o people be filled with gladness behold the bridal chamber of the light in the book of the word of life has come forth from the womb she alone increases introduces the only christ into the world for the salvation of souls brothers and sisters in christ on the feast day the blessed virgin mary we sing this hymn on two occasions first during vespers previous evening which we are all going to pray besides the flock of worshipers also alongside several of my brothers and fellow bishops of the byzantine rites is that the completion this is the lord's day o people be filled with gladness the proclamation of the first great feast day of the church year sets the tone for the entire year of the year abounding in will give us plenty of reasons to rejoice the source of all light the book of the life-giving word appears to us and the doorway to sunrise is born then not only the feast but also opportunities to rejoice will open up to us at least if we regard this new year in the same way the virgin mary jesus looked upon her own life awakening the entry to the great high priest even though she is unique as the only one who brings into the world christ for the salvation of our souls in her footsteps we can also await the great high priest jesus christ entering into our lives also this year and writing his life-giving word into the book of our hearts to shine over our entire lives our entire being as a source of all lights he certainly wants to shine over the year that is beginning now we must therefore be very attentive to how we started and what we need to do to help god fulfill the desire of his in our lives thanks to the providing god we have indeed received all that is necessary to celebrate this day as a worthy outset of a joyful new year the melkite greek catholic patriarch joseph is celebrating with us the divine and holy liturgy he comes to us from assyria that has undergone immense suffering and pain a number of bishops priests and worshipers of the byzantine and other rights will celebrate alongside him so that we can experience the joy of the nativity of the theotokos awaiting the entry of the great high priest as a community and proclaiming his message to the whole world oh people be filled with gladness with his presence the message of the feast will become even more authentic be filled with gladness the holy spirit encouraged he encourages us to do the same in the concluding line of the feast gospel reading a woman in the crowd called out blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you she was prophesying without knowing it in her womanly enthusiasm and foretold me we would call mary the blessed lady the theotokos when we know too that there was another woman who saluted her with similar similarly great joy as the pregnant elizabeth cried out when she met the woman when she met the mother of yet unborn jesus blessed is she who has believed in fact mary herself salutation when she the daughter of zion prophesied herself from now on all generations will call me blessed all that is fulfilled that the holy spirit promised to and about her we salute her as a blessed lady yet her holy son extends the scope salutation when he completes the words of the above-sighted woman in the gospel rather are those who hear the word of god and obey it dear brothers and sisters we are here in saint stephen's basilica at this special event of the eucharistic congress feastly circumstances the good news addressed to everyone that god calls us to this world to be happy can penetrate our souls even more profoundly than ever before we are created for happiness and those who find happiness prepared by god we hear i sincerely trust and i pray from the bottom of my heart that all those who go home after this holy liturgy will obey the word of god she was paying attention but she had to pay attention to several other things too so it is quite understandable that she could get engaged in the teaching wholeheartedly well those who listen to the teaching with just half an ear and half a heart be able to keep it fully mary chose what is better in fact what is best as jesus himself attested to it and added and it will not be taken away from her with what chance can those who pick up only a few fragments of god's word set off toward the promised happiness which has an essential element it has been our church is quite familiar with this human weakness it is no coincidence that we are called to sing together the holy warning which the angels in the holy liturgy right after the bible readings in a divine and holy liturgy means to elevate us into a perfect attentiveness to god where nothing and no one matters the extraordinary guest the numerous foreign brothers and sisters present and the unusually great number of worshipers do not matter either let us now put aside all earthly care for the great high priest is to enter our lives we call him the great high priest who according to the hymns cited in the in the letter to the philippians humbled himself by becoming obedient to death even death on the cross perhaps this can also prevent us from believing that the feast and the entire gospel are indeed good news a message calling us to happiness we might be intimidated by the path of life mary's son had to take and for this reason we might regard mary much rather as a woman in agony to whom a young mother simeon prophesied that a sword will pierce your own soul too than a blessed lady we may be prevented by believing by several things we might be distracted by a number of factors and disturbances from the good news the feast is dedicated to lifting us out of these this doesn't apply exclusively to the calendar feast we celebrate the eucharist at each holy liturgy we are in the spotlight during these days because we are celebrating the eucharist at a week-long international congress but each and every time we take the communion in an event of the same global importance and dynamic relevance the eucharist cannot be more as in it the entire holy trinity gives itself to us in each and every time in each holy communion we receive an infinite gift this special event series makes us focus on this message the celebration of the eucharist is not only one of the christian virtues it is the source of all our resources it is the source and climax of our entire lives only through it keeping god's word is experiencing the eucharist in a special way the incarnation of god's word in our lives this is the turn that the eucharistic congress can bring about in our lives in the life of the church even if we have been turning away from it without paying much attention even if we have been distracted by the abundance of our daily tasks even if we have been intimidated by the demanding standards that should characterize our christian faith we have found the solution we have actually found the inexhaustible source the climax of our earthly life that is worthy worth living for and for which it is worth taking upon ourselves all hardships and struggles jesus didn't only promise happiness to us but in fact brought it to us in the form of his own body his mother is blessed because she believed in him live with him with jesus himself the virgin mary had the closest most intimate relationship with jesus as she carried him in her womb nursed him would lead him by the hand and teach him herself mary is a blessed and happy woman but even happier and more blessed are those who by listening to and keeping the word get even closer to god is that possible at all is it a great it is a great mystery an unresolvable mystery that nevertheless needs to be illuminated and elucidated perhaps now we can get closer to this mystery to the eucharist we can experience the entry of the great high priest who is eager to take the first and foremost place in our lives and hearts therefore the invocation is rightly proclaimed at this feast this is the lord's day o people be filled with gladness um [Music] is [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] faithful let us pray for the catholic commands that the lord have mercy on them [Music] they instruct them in the word of the truth [Music] that he revealed to them the gospel so [Music] me [Music] [Music] oh [Music] art [Music] [Music] uh [Music] oh [Music] um [Music] oh [Music] [Music] so [Music] oh [Music] [Music] [Music] yes [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] [Laughter] is [Music] um [Music] all right oh [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] so and so concludes the byzantine divine liturgy of saint john chris system that was just celebrated at the basilica of saint stephen king of hungary here in budapest hungary uh your impressions of this genuinely magnificent liturgy well i can honestly say that i was trying to have full conscious active participation and i feel like i'm exhausted um it was beautiful it really was um and just the the prayers alone uh following the prayers in the liturgy in hungarian and also in english and in greek as well you really get the sense of god's divine majesty um especially all throughout the liturgy um this emphasis that we're we're coming to worship the thrice holy trinity yes that the trinity triune god that god is one and three and there there's this emphasis of saying the prayers uh over and over again three times as a matter of fact both by the priests and also by the faithful that are there present yeah in his uh homily today uh the metropolitan philip kochich uh had a couple of important points to make first he used here on the nativity of the blessed mother the term and a very very important term theologically and that is teotokos theotoka is a very important theological term that goes back to the council of ephesus and you know just basically emphasizing that jesus christ is one person and that he has two natures and that mary is the mother of one person not a um a divine nature and a human nature um not two persons that was a dispute uh back then that how can she be the mother of um both a divine person and both a human person but christ is one person two divine natures both a human nature and of in the divine nature holy theotokos the god bearer and we see in this divine liturgy as we do in in any liturgy the necessity for clarity of language of right terms of a proper understanding of who christ is the clarity of doctrine is very important both in the east and in the west we saw that in metropolitan hillarians catechesis to us we also see it embodied if you will in the liturgy the liturgy both east and west is the vehicle for the transmission of the faith i like and that's you see that within the context of uh today with being the nativity of the blessed virgin mary you see concretely the prayers the homily everything is geared toward a very precise and clear articulation of the faith being passed on to one generation to the next and the heart of the divine liturgy was the anaphora or the liturgy of the eucharist here we are at an international eucharistic congress and the metropolitan said something that was very memorable he said each and every time we take communion is an event of the same global importance and dynamic relevance the eucharist cannot be more as in at the entire holy trinity gives itself to each us and every time in each holy communion we receive an infinite gift this special event series makes us focus on this message so here we are in the international eucharist of congress a reference to this congress and he also said jesus didn't only promise happiness to us but in fact brought it to us in the form of his own body that's a perfect way i think to uh sort of anticipate on the one hand closing today we're looking forward to tomorrow it is going to be the day of hope here at the international eucharistic congress in budapest we're going to have some catechesis from cardinal john o'neacon from nigeria as well as a testimony from mary healy an american biblical theologian i'm looking forward to tomorrow certainly we have had many remarkable addresses so far here in budapest i might encourage our viewers to pray for an increase in the theological virtue of hope since tomorrow is the day of hope uh here at the congress for you at home to pray for that increase of hope that you may have a deeper trust and deeper confidence in god who is father son and holy spirit yeah well that concludes our coverage for today remember to go to ewtn.com forward slash iec that's ewtn.com forward slash iec to keep abreast of everything that we're doing here in budapest and that this international eucharistic congress has to offer on behalf of everyone here in budapest from ewtn father john paul especially i'm matthew bunson as we go here are some sights and sounds from yesterday as we look forward to tomorrow i hope you'll join us [Music] to others [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] you
