it's no secret that smash ultimate clearly has some problems keeping up serious canon and due to that there's undoubtedly many mistakes littered throughout the game but there may be more than you first expect olimar being canonically less than two centimeters tall but still being bigger than kirby and squirtle and smash krom aiding robin in his final smash even if you're fighting against chrome stages having some different functions than their original games but those are a bit more understandable and are just done to make the game function today we're focusing on things that are either really major that they break series canon for outright mistakes in how they represent a game or series or things that they simply could have changed to make more fitting but for some reason decided not to obviously this video isn't me trying to bash smash ultimate or anything like that i love the game no come on guys seriously i do i do just consider these some fun pieces of trivia it able to do so in every modern mario game right well it depends on your definition of modern look the likely original reason for why he couldn't wall jump in smash is because when the feature was first introduced in melee he was never seen while jumping in any game prior to that and even after melee in 2004 when mario 64 was remade on the ds and luigi got a playable role in there mario is still the only character in the game who has the ability to wall jump luigi still cannot so one can argue that the smash version of luigi is one of the past where those abilities aren't present yet but realistically it doesn't make much sense it's like saying that link shouldn't be able to jump because in pretty much every game prior to breath of the wild he couldn't jump at least now it makes sense just like the wall jumping wood for luigi but hey they're probably too busy censoring the female characters to notice this right and speaking of that my shiranui's absence from smash ultimate was said by sakurai to be because the game was for quote good boys and girls i'm not trying to pretend that her design isn't revealing or anything like that but when censorship was done to pyra and mithra covering up their areas i don't see why a similar treatment couldn't have been done if it was considered a viable solution for them i don't like the censorship of pyra and mithra at all but at least they're in the game for fans who wanted to play as them but to go as far as to not let maya appear as a background character even with an altered design is pretty strange now it's become almost a meme at this point how nes and lucas cannot actually use the vast majority of their psi attacks in smash with them coming from other party members in their games oh it's even funnier to me is how official smash material even outright mocks this in smash 4 the description for ness's pk starstorm attack says quote ness must have learned it especially for smash brothers are you kidding me there are numerous instances of characters not actually using their smash moves what kills me is the outright mocking of eagle-eyed fans here but at least they're embracing that nes and lucas aren't just meant to represent themselves but other members of their group unlike with bowser jr's final smash this move involves him transforming into shadow mario taking a paintbrush across the screen which damages opponents who make contact referencing his origins from super mario sunshine where he's eventually revealed to have been the shadow mario who's plagued you throughout the entire adventure it's a fitting final smash for bowser jr but um in case you forgot junior is only 1 8 of this fighter slot as seven of the eight alts are based on the koopalings who do not possess this ability so while i don't mind the final smash on its own even though the attack is pretty simple what puts it over the edge for me is how the vast majority of the time when playing as the character the inspiration doesn't fit and one more thing about the koopalings i've mentioned this in the past but their alternate costume order in smash still really bothers me if roy and morton's spots were swapped the order of them would actually match the boss fight order that they have in super mario bros 3 the first appearance of the koopalings but no they just decided to leave them in with this mistake and now the order doesn't reference anything when they had an opportunity to do so now i don't want to spend too much time in this video talking about things like character heights and speeds not lining up because there's so many instances of it but fox being significantly faster than wolf despite the opposite being true in star fox assault doesn't make any sense even if you argue that the character's zero appearances are what's being represented in smash ultimate now we simply don't know for a fact that wolfe is faster than fox modernly then how do you explain this also being true in brawl it's just a really weird discrepancy wolf is canonically so much faster than fox it doesn't make any sense for him to be slower i've seen some people try to extend this argument to the pokemon series with some pokemon having higher base speed stats than others even though they're slower in smash brothers but this doesn't entirely line up to me since there's other aspects to this in the series to explain the discrepancies like some pokemon being higher level than others having higher effort or individual values things like that but something that undoubtedly makes no sense is the moves which shouldn't affect pokemon of a particular type still being usable youtube's final smash affects greninja and incineroar despite them being dark type dark has an immunity to psychic the type behind size strike so this canonically shouldn't be possible an explanation could be that every smash fighter is secretly holding a ring target or some random unseen pokemon is used in miracle eye before the match starts but i don't think that's the case same thing happens on the kalos pokemon league stage when dragon moves are used by the background pokemon which can still hit jigglypuff despite ferry having an immunity to dragon guess they imported the pre-gen 6 jigglypuff for smash huh now one of my favorite things about pokemon is the music but some of the smash missions are really weird to me we have both the univer and kalos pokemon leagues as stages yet neither of the league themes or the elite four battle themes are present in the game the closest fitting themes we get are the wonderfully done ends castle zakram and reshrum's theme and dianthus for kalos great additions for sure but not having the two main ones to suit the areas doesn't make any sense and also on the subject of music i'm only going to mention one of these examples because this happens for so many different series but the music tracks of dragon driftway and isis outpost don't list mario kart 8 beside them like literally every other track that's exclusive to mario kart 8. why they decide to leave this out beats me get it like beats music never mind now i could use all the entries in this video on spirits because some of the rankings are completely ridiculous canonical power rankings are said not to matter as much as how quote important the character is but some are just so blatant like giga cat mario was two star in comparison to mario playing golf as a three gigacad is not only more iconic but is also one of the most powerful forms of mario there's ever been so regardless of the method of ranking they fail to maintain accuracy here should we expect them to cross-check every spirit like this no absolutely not hence why i'm only talking about this once today but so many spirits still don't make any sense lugia and hor are literally counterpart box art legendaries and one is higher rank than the other what one other unrelated problem that i have with spirits are some of the classifications the mc ballyhoo spirit is classified as from the mario party series which is appropriate he did originate from mario party 8 but when super mario party came out and they added spirits for the game they listed ones like the dice block is from the mario series in general are you trying to tell me that the dice block isn't a mario party item it doesn't make any sense if you thought this was bad by far some of the biggest inaccuracies in smash ultimate come from the transferring of snakes codec calls since they just reused the same ones from brawl and ultimate and it's safe to say that with nintendo things have certainly changed since then jigglypuff and sonics refer to them as being quote here in brawl when they're not in brawl anymore this is ultimate it still mentions the ability for zelda and cheek to swap between one another when that ability was removed in smash 4 and they officially became separate characters this is also similar to the conversation that happens with zero suit samus they refer to the pokemon trainer as a he even when using the female alt since these versions of the trainer were only introduced in ultimate similar to what happens when you're using the alph skin as they'll still refer to olimar by name despite him not being the one who's actually fighting they also talk about how slow bowser is during the kodak call despite bowser being much faster than snake so i don't really know what they're getting at there this one's worse than most of the others because while they're wrong because of the transfer from brawl to ultimate this one was still wrong in brawl too bowser was still faster than snake one more is the codec for diddy kong which mentions that the peanut gun can shoot some edible peanuts since in brawl when did he missed a shot with this the peanut would be left behind as a food for someone to consume granting a 2 percent heal despite from smash 4 onwards this no longer being the case but snake's codec calls definitely weren't the only conversation carryovers for ultimate palutena's guidance has some mistakes too even though most were changed luigi's was still carried over with him being referred to as the number two fighter in smash due to his placement as second on the character selective smash 4. despite now being appropriately listed as 10 in ultimate yeah the joke could still be that he's number 2 in comparison to his brother which is probably why they left it in but it still doesn't make as much sense as it did in smash 4. in palutena's guidance they also have a conversation about how one link is handsome and the other is adorable implying that there are only two this is because young link wasn't in smash 4 we just had regular and toon link which is understandable it's just the line of dialogue hasn't aged too well now pitt's final smash was changed for ultimate from the three sacred treasures to the lightning chariot causing one of the lines in palutena's guidance to cause some plot holes she tells pitt that the forces of nature have kept the lightning chariot which is pit's ability to use which has now proven to no longer be accurate this one's not as bad because he can still canonically use the attack but because this is smash brothers it doesn't really make much sense for her to promote an attack that he can't actually use in the game but back to some things that don't make sense that are still actually in the game we have corn it's that in smash corn uses the omega form of the autoblade despite her trailer taking place the critical side choosing decision from fire emblem fates in chapter six whereas in the game this form is only actually received in chapter 27. so what happened here i thought three houses was the game with a time skip right now hiro was given the lovely mechanic of critical hits and smash we all love that right yet all the other jrpg characters who realistically could have those mechanics implemented as well don't have it like pokemon or final fantasy characters for example now the real reason for this is obviously just because some of these guys were developed in the late 1990s in comparison to a 2019 dlc release and they probably just wanted to go all out on establishing hero as a must buy new edition but it's still pretty funny to me i guess crits are only canonically present in the dragon quest universe from a smash perspective huh and i guess in a couple of fire emblem final smash names right can't forget those vulgar and smash ultimate is still very much based on the character's appearance in wild world whereas isabel is clearly based on new leaf both of which were the most recent games from the animal crossing series at the start of their respective games development processes yet despite this as well still refers to the villager as the mayor in her trailer even though you weren't actually the mayor in wild world it's very understandable but still not entirely accurate due to the design for the villager that they chose and speaking of wild world smashable is the name for the animal crossing stage based on this game but it actually has a number of characters in its name that exceed the limit for what you can name your town in wild world this one is kind of funny to me but it's not as bad nowadays since this was changed in new horizons but this wasn't based on that game so i feel it still doesn't make any sense the holy water in castlevania is said to burst and spread its flames when it lands near an evil force so uh is mario an evil force kirby link like the majority of the smash roster obviously this is done out of necessity to make the game work but it still doesn't make any sense canonically in the mario maker 2 stage there are so many problems that i can't even list all of them in this video but i'll just say a couple of the main ones like lava being present in an overworld stage when you can't do that in the main games bridge is only being one tile long the lifts are angled here which you can't do in the game and slopes are present even though the stage is based on mario maker 1 when they didn't exist yet i know we expect smash stages to take creative liberties and as i mentioned earlier i'm going to be leaving a lot of these canonical mistakes out but outright breaking the rules of the game here portrays mario maker inaccurately making you think there's more interesting features than there actually are pikachu and pichu both possess the same final smash being the move volt tackle which gives pichu recoil damage to mimic how it works in actual pokemon as well as going along with pichu's gimmick of damaging himself after almost every attack the problem is the inconsistency with how pikachu's volt tackle doesn't give him recoil as well so you're saying the same move works differently from one pokemon to another the only instance i know of this move not giving you recoil is in pokemon conquest so i guess an argument could be made that it's canonically accurate but pikachu can't even use this move in the game anyway waichu is the one who uses this so you can't really have it both ways here it's inaccurate in one form or another bonus points here go out to how some pokemon can't even use their smash moves like pichu's skull bash and agility or golden's use of splash as a pokeball it literally took magikarp's gimmick and gave it to another character you kidding me and also about pichu's use of those two moves in particular why does he damage himself when using them pichu's gimmick is that he can't charge electricity well but neither agility or skull bashes an electric type attack so that canonically shouldn't present an issue for him and kind of the opposite here why doesn't he damage himself while using his upton that actually shows him using electricity and there are other taunts in the game which inflict damage so this shouldn't be an issue ah this character man another weird canonical problem in smash is kirby is able to wield the monado but not the keyblade while the real life reason for this is undoubtedly due to disney's unwillingness to let their character's weapon be used by somebody else canonically it doesn't line up that the monado which has a similar background of limited uses to the keyblade can still be taken though on the subject of blades why does youngling's standard sword inflict more damage in an attack compared to toon link's master sword this makes no sense the master sword is canonically much more powerful otherwise what's the point of getting the upgrade guess we gotta pull out some major stretches as to the power levels of different links in the zelda universe to explain this one huh also with jungling he's clearly based on his ocarina of time version and smash due to his lacking of abilities to use the transformation masks from majora yet in ocarina of time he can't use the hookshot until reaching his adult form a majora's mask he can but he's not based on that game so he shouldn't be able to use the hulk shot either it doesn't make much sense and likely stems from how he was developed as a clone of regular link who had the hook shot at the time in special ultimate some characters especially the newer ones got special ui to show when arsene is coming to join joker for example yet not everyone gets this treatment when rosalina's luma gets knocked out there's no timer for when it's going to come back wario could use a waft meter as well there's so many instances like this and i think would make things a lot easier to keep track of but giving it to some characters not everyone doesn't make any sense now sakurai says he didn't want to make another version of the subspace emissary because its story would just get spoiled online despite having spirits alternate costumes and final smashers in the game with major spoilers for xenoblade fire emblem final fantasy vii and several other series so it's okay for them to get spoiled but not the main game kind of hypocritical sakura nearly every stage in smash ultimate has some exclusions for certain items pokeball pokemon or assist trophies that have mechanics which are too complicated for it to not be usable they just may not fit the terrain or have some other aspect not line up but something that doesn't make much sense to me is why on the brinstar depth stage specifically you cannot use a super or poison mushroom i've seen no definitive reason given as other stages where their similar shifts in terrain don't have this caveat there's probably numerous instances like this but this one in particular is a very puzzling incident to say the least and speaking of terrain steve's ability to mine on the terrain he's on was a great addition for the character but there's some instances like this that don't make any sense particularly when he minds on the rotating blocks on the yoshi's island stage which provides him stone but when mining on the exact same block type on the mario maker stage he gets dirt yeah the exact same type now this stage in particular has many more problems with steve like giving them iron on some pipes and dirt on others which is clearly an error and should be expected with how many stages there are and how many surfaces within those stages that steve could possibly mine on that there would be some discrepancies but this in particular is a pretty big one to me and speaking of the yoshi's island stage which originated in melee it's clearly based on super mario world but is listed as part of the yoshi franchise in smash um what i know there's a lot of debate in the community about which games are technically a part of the super mario franchise which are part of the yoshi franchise i mean the sequel to mario world is literally called super mario world 2 yoshi's island but you can't try to tell me that super mario world isn't a mario game like what is wrong with nintendo man another stage discrepancy is magikants as this is listed as from earthbound despite it mostly all taking inspiration from earthbound beginnings this is proven as entirely inaccurate as in the japanese version of the game the stages listed this from mother 1 the japanese name for earthbound beginning so this is clearly a translation error that i don't know why they didn't fix something funny to me is that mushroom kingdom 2 doesn't actually take place inside the mushroom kingdom the doki doki panic version of mario 2 actually takes place in the land of dreams also known as subcon most mario games take place in the mushroom kingdom so i understand how it was probably easier for people to get the idea behind the stage with a title like this but it's still not accurate something similar is how the mario galaxy stage is listed as from mario galaxy when starship mario is present in the background which wasn't in the original mario galaxy but the design of the bowser airships are based on their look from the original and not too so i suppose a combined listing of both games would have been the right way to go it's definitely possible for them to list two games at once that just outright chose not to despite having this detail from galaxy 2 in there kind of an opposite situation to this is with the hyrule castle stage still being listed as a zelda stage in general despite it looking exactly like the ocarina of time one and that being the inspiration for it all the way back in smash 64. a more specific name would have been a much better goal here one more instance like this is the dreamland gb stage which is simply listed as kirby despite it making a lot more sense for them to specify dreamland into it since it's literally named after dreamland from the game boy now some moves and abilities and special to make out separate menus with descriptions for them like all of mars pikmin kirby's inhale and whatnot which makes sense for a new player looking to get acquainted with everything but a strange one to me is that they gave a separate description for pyrus forward smash really it doesn't do anything special it's just a strike so why warrant this extra description well mithra has an attack in the game called foresight which is a form of counter-attacking the opponent that they felt warranted its own section so it seems like they just gave pyro a menu so neither one of them appeared to be less interesting to the casual player than the other trying to make both elements of that one dlc fighter slot seem to have more interesting abilities than they actually do it's a pretty weird strategy especially considering that it should be obvious to anyone that having two characters and one slot is already incredibly unique they really didn't have to go over the top trying to sell this like they did while ruining the speciality of a character getting a spot on that menu shulk's final smash consists of four characters attacking the opponent despite you having a party limit of three in xenoblade chronicles with shulk also not attacking first despite him calling for the attack and when you do that you always attack first in the original game always this is a small thing but it's a detail that still doesn't make any sense nonetheless something similar is crosstrap deals fire damage despite not being a fire move when used by incineroar this one i could kind of cut him some slack for i mean this giant cat wrestler who's flinging his body at you does have a flaming belt but it's still not canonically accurate now i didn't really want to focus too much on characters using moves that they've never been shown to use in smash outside of pokemon since they literally are confirmed and not have those abilities but i gotta mention daisy like oh my goodness does her move set not make any sense she's never shown using their floating abilities putting opponents to sleep and has no established relationship with the toads to use them as attacks like i understand it's all because they wanted to add an extra echo which makes a lot of sense for peach in theory but because of her lack of playable appearances in the main series the moveset doesn't line up quite a few of the echoes are like this and i made a video giving them all new movesets in the past for this exact reason but it still bothers me as is and speaking of echoes smash ultimate introduced this classification designating clones from previous smash games as such while also introducing some new ones right well they didn't exactly give this designation to every clone with one of the most notable examples to me being dr mario now look i could see why p2 and young link weren't classified as echo fighters from nintendo's perspective because they were brought all the way back from melee for smash ultimate and they'd likely want to make them feel like big new additions yet dr mario was in smash 4. he wasn't part of this big comeback like this and in smash 4 he was grouped alongside darkpit and luciana in a small section of the roster away from the rest of the characters from their home series to signify this clone status yet for some reason they left him out of the echo classification despite having more similar to mario than ken does to ryu for example it doesn't make any sense i mentioned my gripes with pirate's special move screen earlier on but still every move in smash ultimate does have a description screen even if it's not in the special section and i wanted to mention roy and krom in particular because i found this aspect pretty interesting the description states that they will strike back against the opponent with a greater force seems simple enough and yes this is accurate most of the time since there's a damage multiplier calculated based on the opponent's move that they're going to hit you with before striking them back but the problem is this counter attack caps at 60 damage so for example if heroes forward smash landed a crit or you were powered up beforehand but you countered there would still be more than 60 inflicted on you despite giving less than that back making the moves description inaccurate in these specific cases where more than 60 damage is done that's a subtle detail but by saying it always strikes back with a greater force you open yourself up to some criticism like this considering the huge amount of great content that smash already has i'm willing to accept that the game's menus lie to us from time to time well uh maybe more times than you initially expect i'll see you next time with another video and
