hi folks canadian prepper here so today on the channel we're going to be checking out my five-year apocalypse food supply so let's get to it all right guys so as you can see here i have five years worth of food now a lot of people overestimate the amount of food they have this is only five years worth of food for one person on what i would consider half rations now there's about 2.5 million calories that you can see here the average man needs about 1 million calories a year if he's working every day the average woman a little bit less just because of the reduced muscle mass and lower average body weight but if we're just talking about survival you can get away with half rations just don't expect to do a whole heck of a lot so a lot of channels that i see on youtube are claiming that they have two five 10-year food supplies they haven't done the math now this is a working pantry but it's also an apocalypse pantry there's a working pantry component and an apocalypse component okay so the apocalypse component everything is going to last 25 years plus i don't have to do any maintenance because all the work has been done this is something that i've been working on for probably eight plus years if you are planning on starting something like this it's going to take a while on this side i have things which are a bit more perishable and things that i'm going to use more frequently now part of the reason why you don't see a lot of canned goods and stuff like that is because whatever disposable income i do have i use it on fresh food i try to eat very healthy so that means going to the grocery store every other day to get fresh produce health is wealth so i don't like eating the canned stuff i don't like eating the preservatives and the problem with me storing canned goods is that i have to continuously cycle them out meaning that i have to eat them on a regular whereas with the grains i'm okay with eating those because those are the staple carbs of a lot of meals and they don't contain a lot of preservatives now one of the first things you want to consider when you're planning your food storage is the space that you're going to put it in there's three layers of protection between your food and the outside environment there's the micro layer which is the first level of packaging that the product is contained within then there's the meso packaging which is these buckets that you see here or cans or whatever the case might be then there's the macro packaging as i like to call it and that is your storage space now with your storage space i think it's imperative that you plan the space out don't just start throwing food in a closet that's okay to start but eventually you want to make that space clean and organized you should be able to eat off the floor of your food pantry that might mean renovating the space that might mean redoing the flooring putting up some drywall just putting more barriers between your stuff and the outside world because with drought and floods come plague and pestilence things like mice bugs cockroaches or other types of insects are things that are going to spoil your food supply that's why everything i do here is overkill one of the first things i would recommend you get for your food space is a dehumidifier i probably empty my dehumidifier once a day and it is filled to the brim with liters of water that it's pulling out of the air in here water is not your friend when it comes to food storage the other thing you're going to want to keep in mind is climate control so here in canada it gets very cold in the winter if you are storing things that have liquid components the change in temperature from hot to cold might impact the integrity of the packaging of that stuff and that is going to cause your food to spoil fast and it also shouldn't be too hot because heat is a bad thing cold dry dark place is ideal for foods these lights up here leds they don't give off a lot of heat and the lights in here aren't on that often anyways so that's another thing if you're stacking vertically like i would recommend you do use your space that you don't want your food too close to a light source or to a window and if it is make sure you have that window closed off now as you can see here i have a color-coded system with my apocalypse foods yellow is going to be grains because of course yellow is the color of wheat blue is going to be things like sugars salts even spices red is going to be protein red meat white is going to be rice different types of rice grate is going to be different types of drinks so that's going to be your coffee freeze-dried smoothies fruit purees things of that nature black is going to be junk food that's probably going to be one of the kids favorite buckets to hit up when it all goes down so we in there we got things like chocolates sesame snaps so green is going to be vegetables i haven't freeze dried a lot of vegetables yet that's big on my list the problem with freeze drying vegetables is you're doing it mostly for the vitamins and minerals you're not doing it for the calories and it's a big commitment of time and energy from my freeze dryer but i do have lots of popcorn anyways so the kids will be happy about that so with these buckets i'll post a link where you can get these online this color coding system is convenient but it's absolutely not necessary every food that's in these buckets is contained within mylar bags and then the second layer is buckets now some of these buckets come with gamma lids if you're using packaging within the bucket itself you probably don't need the food safe lids none of the food that i'm storing is coming into contact with the plastic it's all contained in individual packets within the buckets themselves and up here we just have mountain house food this lasts 30 years probably 40 years if you have a lot of money and you don't want to be bothered with all of this work because believe me it was a lot of work several dozen grocery store runs you're not getting this all in one walk then you can't go wrong with a few pallets of mountain house i would strongly advise against those buckets of freeze dried food that say 30 60 meals for 300 trust me you get what you pay for with those i've made videos exposing those companies that are banking on people never eating this stuff just putting it in a closet because if you actually ate it you would realize that you're better off storing a bucket of rice which is going to be more cost effective have more calories be more versatile in terms of what you can do with it so i would strongly caution against those but mountain house is pretty much the rolls royce of prepping foods so in the yellow buckets as you can see we have things like flour we have pancake mix oats macaroni spaghetti noodles also known as ramen in canada we call it ichiban apparently people say it's ichiban ikiban i don't know what it is okay it's stuff with it has a lot of msg in it the kids are gonna love it basically with those noodles i take the top ramen packets i put it directly into the bucket nothing special with those now within each one of these buckets there's roughly 25 000 to 35 000 calories and that's whether it's meat or carbs i don't store a lot of fats the fats that i'm going to get in my diet are largely going to be meat or nuts or otherwise the reason why i don't store a lot of oils is because they don't keep that long unfortunately in the red buckets as you can see we have various types of vegetable protein we have tuna some of it's wet we have buckets of freeze-dried meat miscellaneous freeze-dried meat this could be powdered eggs as well we have lentils and of course we have milk powder all protein superfoods okay so red is protein in the white buckets it's just rice and i got lots of rice i probably have a million in some odd calories worth of just rice probably one of the number one things to store just for its macronutrient content i'm talking about the carbs and the proteins down here we have our copia freeze dried smoothies i did a video on our copia freeze dried smoothies last 25 to 30 years it's essentially just freeze-dried fruit absolutely delicious okay if you mix that in with your whey protein or cocoa or skim milk powder it's going to be what i call a mad max smoothie so you definitely want to check that out up here we have sugar salt once again in mylar bags of course gonna last pretty much indefinitely so long as i can keep it nice and dry here i do have some perishable items and i should add that this is three feet deep so a lot of this stuff goes all the way to the back not all of it but you can store a lot of stuff in a relatively small place okay you could easily store three to four million calories if i had this packed to the gills i do have a few canned things here like canned tomatoes i had a subscriber on the last video recommend a few good recommendations actually one was tomato powder and another one was activated charcoal which i never considered that would have been a great addition to the powder video you can use activated charcoal for a lot of things from water purification to detox so we do have some stuff that we're going to use more regularly a lot of this stuff is for the kids as you guys know kids can be pretty picky they love their chemicals and colors of course we try to limit their exposure to this stuff but this is stuff i know that we're going to use and that's the only reason why i have it i have some spam over here just just for kicks okay just because it's the staple prepper food and i figure there's going to be somebody dumb enough to trade me for this after it hits the fans so why not i have my jars of powder here and i have these on display because that video i made didn't get a whole lot of love and i was hoping that maybe you guys would go and check out that video and give it a thumbs up let me know what you think we have some mres which are going to be good for bugging out not the most cost-effective long-term emergency prep these are going to last probably realistically speaking ten years possibly even more they're rated to last between five and seven years again the higher the fat content the shorter the shelf life here we have some berkey water filter purification elements i have about four boxes of those and those are going to be combined with of course my berkey water filter i should probably get a few more of these they are pretty expensive we actually do sell them on canadianpreparedness.com so a lot of this stuff some of the freeze dried foods you can get there if you're interested we have some baking powder we have vanilla extract we have baking soda lemon juice lots of lemon juice just for flavoring even for preserving foods we have some maple syrup some pickles which i don't know what the deal is with pickles but they seem to last a long long time we have some miscellaneous spices a couple buckets of soya sauce to go with our rice this soy sauce it has so much sodium it's gonna last damn near forever uh frank's red hot sauce uh the great thing about red hot sauce is that the only ingredients in it if you actually look are red peppers vinegar water salt garlic powder all things which are going to last a long long time we have some vinegar which is just incredibly multi-purpose got herself a nice big tub of honey that i bought locally i got a great deal on this i got this for a hundred bucks this is like 15 kilograms of raw honey for 100 bucks that's an insane deal if this was ancient times or even 50 years from now in the post-apocalypse this is going to be worth probably the same amount as somebody's house because honey is just an incredibly high value commodity that we take for granted this day and age just a few odds and ends you know chewing gum whether for barter or just as a morale booster down here we have a few different types of cleaning supplies we have a lot of garbage bags we have some of them are contractor bags remember this goes deep so we have a bucket of laundry detergent we have some dish claws these are just temporary to keep this place clean i don't actually think that this is going to store that long because of course the moisture is going to escape it some craft paper there for the kids this is just a solar motion activated light that i i keep one as a backup these are really good i'm gonna do a video on this just as itself because it's a really good product some ziploc baggies some journals we have a lot of disposable dishes so disposable utensils and paper plates soaps toothpaste you name it and the reason why disposable is because water is going to come at a premium in a lights out situation so you don't want to be using your water cleaning your dishes as long as you can go using disposable paper products and potentially even reusing them so long as that doesn't mean attracting insects and pests but using disposable plates and utensils is something not a lot of people think about putting in their prep so i absolutely would encourage you to consider that all right so up top i'm not one to do canning in jars but if i ever did i could do that because i have some jars so i don't have a pressure canner i know there's ways to seal stuff in jars without a pressure counter i would be relying primarily on my freeze dryer so long as i had an energy source to power it to power that freeze dryer is going to take a decent sized solar generator so that's something i'm still working on whether or not it's something i would use in a grid down scenario it's primarily being used before the grid goes down to preserve food freeze dryer is going to allow you to make any food last between 25 to 30 years so long as it's a low fat content food now moving up here we have our toilet paper of course we have paper towels and we also have these toilet paper tablets now you don't want to use these in your toilet it's a higher density cellulose so it's not going to dissolve like toilet paper does in the toilet but as you can see you can store 1000 of them and if you're very regular and you're very good and dexterous you can get away using just one for every cleansing if you will so that's a lot of number twos up there condensed into a small space if you're limited in space go with the toilet paper tablets but just remember only for use in a hole or an outhouse so coming over here we have a dehumidifier like i said this is probably one of the most important preps to manage the climate of your space get a dehumidifier use it regularly empty it regularly get that moisture out of the air because there's a lot of it and it's going to kill your food now i don't have to worry about that so much for my apocalypse food because it's in mylar and buckets but if it isn't then you're definitely going to want to mind your humidity now over here i have a stand-up freezer obviously while the grid is up you want to be freezing your food as well so this is not the only freezer i have but i have one in here in particular because this also contains my seed supply you're going to want to keep your seeds at a very very low temperature i recently talked about a study which was conducted a due with the permafrost and the storing of seeds and that study found that 80 of seeds were still good after 30 years and the conditions which were important for the conservation of these seeds was the temperature so you got to keep that temperature low and keep the moisture levels low as well this is our harvest right freeze dryer we're going to do another video on this because i have a whole new generation of subscribers who's not familiar with this machine and what it can do so if you have any questions about it put them in the comment section below it's an expensive machine but it pays itself off rather quickly especially if you use it for preserving meats because remember this can take any chicken which currently is skyrocketing in price and it can make it last 25 to 30 years you can buy 10 worth of chicken today that chicken is probably going to be worth 50 to 100 20 years from now so you can see how much that investment is going to appreciate it's going to have the same texture it's going to have 97 of the nutrient content retained it's going to taste great and it's just going to be an excellent barter item and you're not going to have to pay an arm and a leg for it literally if we're entering the soylent green era so yeah that's my five year food supply once again i see that conservatively that's for one person obviously for my entire family realistically guys this is probably only going to last a year or two so bear that in mind that a lot of people who are showing you these 10-year survival food pantries they're not doing the math properly because if you're going to be doing hard work which you likely will have to be doing when it all goes down if that's working outside doing a lot of manual tasks you're gonna be burning three thousand to four thousand calories a day spread that over 365 days you're well over a million calories in a year so consider that let me know if you have any questions in the comment section below don't forget to like comment subscribe and go check out my video on prepping pantry powders check it out guys
