i'm daniel i'm jay-z and this is just my diy we're getting back to our sublimation roots today and trying out several different ways to sublimate on wood we're going to try painted wood we're going to go after the subtly glaze as well as poly acrylic and of course thermal laminate as we get into testing these four ways we actually thought of a fifth way to sublimate on wood that not a lot of people have tried htv that's right we're gonna put htv on wood and then try to sublimate on top of that so we got a lot of experimenting ahead of us see how it all turned out right now to do this experiment we found a design on creative fabrica that we could use across sports we like to print everything from photoshop but you can use your favorite program whatever you use make sure that you do flip it over because all sublimation prints need to be reversed once we go into the print menu we're going to be using our ecotank 15 000 so we're going to check out our print settings real quick we are printing on 13 by 19 inch paper and we are using premium presentation paper mat setting and best quality so once we have all that we send it to the printer which photoshop makes you click front twice here it is printing out using hippo sublimation ink and please do note the colors will not appear as though you want them to until you press it with heat absolutely and we are using the johnson plastics plus sublimation paper which we will also link [Music] below these little rounds are 10 inch rounds we found these on amazon if we were doing this for real we would definitely glue two of these together to alleviate some of the warping issues you're going to get with something this thin when you heat it but for now we're just going to paint them we're using a regular latex paint like you would use in your house obviously putting it on with a bit of a roller and letting them sit thank goodness we had the foresight to paint that fifth one even though we started off with only four concepts to test first up polycrylic prep this is a water-based polyacrylic and before we're ready to use it we're going to sand with a 220 grit over the white paint afterwards we dust thoroughly [Music] it is important you do not shake polycrylic but instead stir and you can use a stirring stick as a guide to pour it into your second container so you do not pull dust or other debris into your main container and apply liberally and evenly making sure to attend to the edges and use up as much as you pour as you can because otherwise it's just going to go to waste [Laughter] now we're going to do the subway glaze prep first we're going to heat up our convection oven to 325 degrees and it's important that you don't put this in the oven that you cook in this silver glaze that we have is a clear sublimation coating they do make a white one but the clear is just what we had so make sure you shake it up real good for about a minute this is actually in real time lies and then spray liberally to get a nice good coat on there you will want to once you get that coat on there wait five minutes not five hours it's a true story [Laughter] and then put it in the oven like a pizza pie where you'll let it sit for 20 minutes which is actually a true story make sure you're in a well-validated area this stuff is pungent when it is cooking i was not standing there the whole time breathing that in thank goodness now you will notice that the baking of the subtle glaze on the wood did turn the paint color a little bit you'll see when we put this bear painted wood down that it definitely darkened up that white paint some so something to keep in mind also the back of it was very toasted here's a laminate prep so we're going to pull out a thermal laminating pouch and you'll know that there's like one very clear side to it and one very opaque side to it what's the difference well the glossy side goes on the outside and the more matte side goes on the inside because that's where the adhesive is so we're gonna make sure to do all the work there on the inside of the envelope we don't need both sides so we trim it out [Music] we're going to trim it down to shape a little bit leaving some overlap but not too much is to stick to everything ever yeah remember when you heat this that it's going to stick to your butcher paper whatever you have underneath it so it will laminate everything it will laminate laminate the earth so we put a sheet of butcher paper underneath and then a bunch of paper on top just to protect our heat press and we let it go for about 30 seconds at 380. and peel it and cool it and then trim it now this took a minute to cool down so it was 380 degrees we highly recommend those heat gloves that you'll see us using throughout this video once it cools we use our x-acto knife to trim it to size before placing it onto our sublimation printout we're just going to use a couple pieces of heat sensitive tape to hold it in place heat resistant tape that's what i meant so you'll notice we do have an overlap with the sublimation ink as well that was intentional because we want a full bleed but that also means that two sheets of butcher paper are gonna go beneath this and the press for every single one so you can make sure to not mess up our press so we'll start off by submitting on the laminate two sheets of butcher paper down like i just said place that with the sublimation print facing our salmon print on top and press it 380 degrees for 60 seconds now we like to peel these warm even though it says you should probably let it cool first but we don't want the ghosting effects to happen we really try to peel all of our sublimation hot when we can we don't want casper no no caspers look at how well that did we'll do a close-up in a full debrief on all these methods but that one came out beautifully now doing this this whole thing on subway glaze the same thing two layers of butcher paper down the sublimation thing and then two more layers of butcher paper and then we peel it again and this one i actually feel pretty nice too that paper came right off the color looks good too everything looks good now we're going to go into the poly acrylic again everything is 380 for 60 seconds the one thing we will say while we're doing this here is that we do not reuse any of our butcher paper once it's been heated with the sublimation we don't want any accidental transfers so butcher paper use once why are you struggling peeling that off because it's stuck it's stuck all over that round and keep in mind we did let this poly acrylic cure for actually four or five days because we got distracted um even letting it cure that long it totally sucks we had to use some water in the rag and about 20 minutes to get this off and there's still some on it [Music] and here's the bear paint same story butcher paper sublimation project butcher paper 380 press and go 60 seconds done and here she goes struggle again watch this same story as with the poly acrylic the bear paint the paper stuck to it we don't show you uh scrubbing it off but another 20 minutes with a rag and water uh and we'll show you what that turned out with very faded and side project i think the laminate kind of inspired this one but we remember that you can sublimate on various htvs so we grabbed ourselves some holographic htv from caesar and cut it on the starcraft solo but you can use a cricut silhouette solo whatever you want to use to cut this down to size we cut that about 10 inches because these wood rounds are slightly under 10 inches because there's no carrier sheet touching the wood we are going to use our heat resistant tape to secure that down again just a layer of butcher the project and another layer of butcher just keep everything clean everything so we tack this on at 320 degrees for about 20 20 seconds or so even though this says it should be a cool peel we do peel it a little bit warm it stayed on fine and then trim it to size as a tip we would not recommend trimming this exactly to size at this point you'll see why shiny but we're going to go ahead and put it across the sublimation project paper and put it in place with more heat resistant tape and two layers of butcher the project guess what two more layers of butcher i don't believe it two layers two [Laughter] swing it now we're gonna use 385 degrees for 40 seconds and then of course i'm going to try and peel it see if she can do this one so it did stick on one corner because the htv either shifted or shrunk we're not sure which one but that's why we recommend not trimming it to size until after you subtle mate now that we have several made out all five rounds in different ways we're going to tell you what we liked and maybe didn't like about each method first we'll talk about polycrylic i feel like the colors came out through the sublimation process vivid bright but you can see it's not shiny right so that has a really good wood look to it which is what we were kind of aiming for sublimating on wood however while it had good color payoff oof that elbow grease to get all the sublimation paper off a little much there still might be some sublimation paper on here i definitely saw little pieces so then we're going to go on to painted wood now this came out with a very faded vintagey i'm actually surprised it took as much of the sublimation ink as it did but some people would like this for their design yeah i would say this was my least favorite we're trying not to tell you this is the best way to do it but this is my least favorite overall because it has low color payoff and high needs for elbow grease so if you want a vintage look on wood and you don't mind putting in the work otherwise no then we got sudbly glaze the stinkiest of methods this uh penetrated our garage our living room our sinuses are who you put on your safety stuff yeah and definitely so the great thing about this is this has really good color payoff the paper was easy to get off of this one we do wish that the um paint hadn't changed colors as much kind of turned a little brownish vintage in the convection oven but that could have been the kind of paint that we used we'll definitely experiment with this method more but when we do we'll make sure that the garage door is fully open and not just cracked because this stuff does stink now we got the sizer htv holographic this was so fun so i'm really glad that we tried this even if it was kind of an afterthought because we know you can sublimate on top of a bunch of different htvs glitter htv holographic glow in the dark and there's probably a few others that i know some people have tried but putting together the htv on wood plus sublimate on htv had a really cool effect it does look really awesome there's only a couple of nuances so you had to finish right and that has to do with some possible shrinkage or slippage of the htv during the sublimation application process but that can be fixed yeah i mean not fixed but we could do it better we knew better next time but overall this is a really interesting look and if you're not trying to get the wood grain to show through and you're just going for a really cool i want to make a sign with sublimation you should definitely give this method a try it also does have some aspect of gloss to it but it's not an overpowering amount of gloss like heat transfer we'll call it thermal laminate do this every time folks every single take now this this came out with like the sharpest of images but somewhere in here out there you're gonna get it you know almost i'll get it here eventually you'll see the shine on it he's trying to blind you guys bouncing our light off and there you go so the great thing about the thermal laminate is that you got wonderful color payoff thermal laminate is meant to be heated so you don't get into any of that questionable sublimating on top of adhesive laminate and what fumes might be coming from that this is meant to be heated i think it has great color payoff and if you're looking for a glossy finish this is really the way to go it is so there we go five different ways to sublimate on wood we hope you learned a lot in this if you did of course you should like subscribe and ring the bell in the comment line give us a different idea of maybe another couple of things we can try to use as a medium for supplementing on wood and of course know that everything that we use to do this is listed in the description below also in the description are all of our social handles please connect those across platforms we love hearing from you guys and don't forget to check out our blog at justmydiy.com thanks for watching [Music] you
