5 THINGS TO DO BEFORE GETTING A PUPPY

for today's video i thought we would talk about the top things you should do before getting a dog and these are absolute musts according to me so i'm just going to share this according to my own experience and hope that it helps you too these are things that i wish i did when i first got hurricane milton so i'm just here to pass on the knowledge and hope that it helps you out in the new top five things that you should do before getting a puppy so the first thing you should do according to us before getting a puppy is to research the breed that you want and this is essential because not every dog is going to be suitable for your lifestyle you might like a dog for a certain look but they might not be appropriate for apartments they might not be appropriate for people that don't work from home they might not be appropriate if you don't have a very active lifestyle etc so it's very important for you to research the breed beforehand just to make sure that your lifestyle and your personality even really matches well with the dog that you want to get just to give a few examples if you love huskies for example or cliques or dogs that are very active and tend to have a bit more anxiety and really need a lot of exercise those dogs tend to do better with people that have bigger houses bigger yards or people that have very active lifestyles if you're willing to walk your dog for at least two hours a day and always be outside and active with them then maybe this dog is really appropriate for you another example is if you're allergic to dogs or if you have a tendency to be allergic to dogs maybe you should look into hypoallergenic dogs that might be a better option for you so all these little things are always things to consider before you get a puppy so it would be a good idea to maybe do a list of your lifestyle your what you're looking for in a dog and then look up a few different dog breeds to see if that would be suitable for you the second thing i would say to do before getting a puppy is to look up local veterinary clinics local dog hospitals in your area to make sure that you have something that is suitable for you that you're comfortable with personally we have a lot of vets in the area and we're very happy with our vet however i know that if you live a bit further and animal hospitals are a bit further it might be a bit trickier for you to get to the vet i know that usually you don't have a lot of vet visits to do but in the first year with your puppy there are a few visits just to get all the booster shots just to get the checkups and make sure that everything is okay with your puppy so if let's say the closest event is two hours away from you that might not be the most practical thing so just make sure that there are some services and amenities available for you for you and your pup close to you another thing that we really love and that we think is very important is to have a 24-hour vet hospital nearby the vet that we go to do have emergency services and they do have vets on site 24 hours a day so if ever there's an emergency we know that hurricane milton are covered and it's just not even five minutes away so that makes me feel very safe for hurricane milton and and that's just something for you to consider i know that it's really good when you can find a vet that specializes or that is very used to dealing with a certain breed i know cavaliers are more common i'm going to talk about cavaliers just because i know them i know cavaliers are more common in the u.s so we have a lot of friends in the u.s that have vets that only deal with cavaliers almost or that have cavaliers so they're much more familiar with the breed and that might make you feel better going to that vet the third point i would like to talk to you about before getting a puppy you should stock up on all the essentials and if it's not stocking up you should at least look up the items that you would like to get to make a budget because puppies are not really cheap to get there's a whole set of things that you can get that are essential but there's also other things that you can get if you want to spoil your dog if you want to get a bit bougier accessories i know there's so many brands now that are popping up offering beautiful dog accessories from necessities to accessories to toys to treats to anything so there's a lot of things on the market and it's always a good idea to start browsing sooner than later just so you can prepare a budget for your puppy's arrival if you're interested in knowing more we do have a puppy essentials playlist i'm going to be linking it up here we film a little bit over a year ago but the essentials remain the same it's always a good idea to to look up food that you would like to get what kind of diet that you like to put them on treats accessories training grooming all those essential things that you would like to get before your puppy comes or at least start researching those things so that you know roughly what you're gonna need and then you can start just making a list and if your puppy is only coming in like a year a year and a half or so you have time to scout out and look out for deals and sales and whatnot so we highly recommend being more prepared and doing it in advance the fourth point i would like to talk about is reach out to other dog owners and this is so useful because before getting herky i didn't know any cavalier owners and we i basically just learned on the fly but i would have loved to have a support group because there are certain things that can arise at really random moments and you don't necessarily want to go to the vet sometimes it's just your dog's character and whatnot and you just want somebody to discuss these things with and there's no better person to talk about these things than another dog owner that has the same breed as you because chances are they went through the same issues they have the same puppy maybe they have the same tidbits to share with you and it's just great to share your experience with another person and just learn from what they know as well so a few recommendations for you would be facebook groups instagram is fabulous for you to meet other dog owners there's also breeders that you can reach out to usually breeders are really nice to accompany you along the way of having a puppy and even after you adopt a puppy most are really good at staying in touch with you and helping you along the way but i know a lot of people that are in touch with littermates and their parents as well so that's a great support system to have other than that there's also clubhouse that you want to join we do a few talks a week on clubhouse and we always love to share stories and tidbits and whatnot on dog ownership dog care on anything related to dogs if you want to join clubhouse we're on there our club is cavalier dog moms and we have chats monday wednesdays and fridays but generally i would say facebook and instagram are great great sources for you to refer to other dog owners and ask for help and ask for advice whenever necessary the fifth point i would like to talk to you about today regarding things you should do before getting a puppy is get dog insurance or get pet insurance and this is where tropanion comes into play we've been on trapadding for uh three years now for for both girls and i just wish we had done it sooner the sooner you do it the more you're gonna feel comfortable and the more you're gonna be at peace and you you're just gonna make sure that your puppy is covered there are a few advantages of doing it sooner than later also and there's a fact that the sooner you enroll your puppy you're gonna have a lower premium and also the sooner you do it the less chances of having pre-existing conditions there will be because you're gonna pretty much enroll your puppy at just a few months old and then you're pretty much gonna be covered forever so we highly on the phone of course but we love having pet insurance just for peace of mind and just to make sure that herky and milton are okay in case there's any diseases illnesses or accidents and accidents is something that can happen quite often unfortunately with puppies and you just want to make sure that in case something happens that you're covered and that your puppy's health and their well-being is
