[Music] whoo how is it going everybody thank you all so much for tuning in today because we're talking about five things that you know for beginner guitar players they really need to know this kind of stuff about guitars is actually kind of like before you buy your first guitar thing now if you do already play guitar you can of course check out my free guitar course the fret board decoder it's linked to right there that's down in the description let's go ahead and talk about what we're talking about so you know there's a lot of things about guitar that when we're starting out you might not initially have this information available to you and I think some of these things you know I would appreciate if knowing like ahead of time but you know I thought I'd make a list of five things I think are very crucial for guitar players and basically like I said they're kind of like before you buy your first guitar or you're just starting out so let's go ahead and jump into these alright so number one is figuring out what you want to play so odds are if you're playing guitar most time unless you were forced to play guitar which would be terrible you are playing because something inspired you to pick up the guitar so you need to figure out what it was that inspired you to play guitar now if you're starting out you don't really know what makes a good guitar other than what people tell you so look at your guitars as a store for you know buying one and figure out which one speaks to you the shape you know is it a Les Paul style guitar maybe you're a strat guy now the strat is initially what appealed to me I love the look of a strata is actually a Stevie Ray Vaughan strat that was one of the first like big guitars I always I was like I want to save up and get that guitar maybe it's 80s metal maybe you want a super strat you know that's always a great option it's kind of the best of both worlds and last but certainly not least a Telecaster now a Tele is something that I initially greatly disliked I did not like Telecaster at first and now I love them they are such a cool guitar so you have a lot of different body styles and there's so many other ones there's flying V's although I wouldn't recommend that as the first you know started guitar but the other thing that I think kind of gets overlooked and you know some people might disagree with me but when I was teaching at a store when people would come in and want to buy their first guitar some of them would want to buy left-handed guitar and to be honest I always strongly deterred people from trying to buy their kid themselves if they were left-handed a left-handed guitar now the reason is because there's just like it's like a million to one ratio there's so many more right-handed guitars out there and the way I always kind of looked at it as a teacher is even though your left hand might be your dominant hand you're doing something completely foreign like it doesn't matter which is your dominant hand or not you're not gonna know how to play this thing you know neither hand is gonna be working properly at all in the beginning so why not go with a guitar that is gonna give you so many more options down the road and I'll talk about you know another thing a little bit later on in the video that I also think this really helps out and applies to this as well so you know it's just kind of figuring out what you want if you're just dead set on getting a left-handed guitar you want to be a lefty go for it I have buddies who are left-handed guitar Shane from in the Blues amazing guitar player let plays Lefty and there's nothing wrong with it it's just I said when you're starting out neither hand knows what they're doing when it comes to playing guitar and I always just tried to push people in the direction of playing a right-handed guitar because there's just more options out there so number two so this one I think that is kind of like an understood like an unspoken thing that the guitar is not easy you know obviously if you play other musical instruments having understood understanding of rhythm and stuff like that is very crucial and very helpful but overall guitar is just not easy but what a lot of people don't seem to mention is that it will require sacrifice if you know depending on what level of guitar player you want to be if you're completely content just learning a couple chords and kind of strumming around then you know you'll be able to get to that point relatively quickly but if your favorite guitar player like myself is eddie van halen it's gonna take a lot of work and a lot of sacrifice of you I mean like what I did was when I would get up for school I'd wake up a little bit extra early so I could play guitar before I'd go to school I'd go home get my homework done real quick and play guitar or I'd go you know lay out and a hammock and have my acoustic or something like that I was always playing guitar though so it was because it was so addicting once I kind of got bit by that bug I was just like I want to play all the time so you do have to understand that you know the guitar isn't good you're not gonna magically learn how to play guitar one day it's difficult it requires discipline and it will require sacrifices like maybe you're gonna stop watching whatever your favorite TV show is because you would rather use that time to play guitar or maybe you need to record your favorite TV show and that way you can you know practice during the week and maybe take the weekend off or something like that but it's just understanding that you know if you're listening to these amazing guitar players that didn't just happen overnight that took a lot of work and a lot of discipline out of them to be like you know what get I'm putting guitar first over you know whatever sleep or whatever it is I mean at end of the day it's just you're you know you always get back what you put in in guitar if you really really like hammer away at it there's so many amazing guys out there none of it came easy and it just takes a lot of work but don't be discouraged because I feel like guitar is something that everybody can do it's a instrument for everyone number three oh what kinds of reverb out here and this is the tiniest couch in the world so number three guitar gear can be expensive when we're starting out I know that those beginner packs and all that stuff look very very appealing and they're not the worst thing in the world but you know guitar gear is expensive and if you invest a little bit more in it you're gonna have trust me a much better experience learning I started out on a pretty inexpensive guitar and put me knew that I was you know addicted to playing guitar so then I saved up and bought a much nicer one and it was crazy how inspiring a nicer guitar was now I'm not going asking you to go out there and buy a Les Paul Custom or anything like that but if you know someone who knows how to play guitar I highly recommend in your wanting to get into playing guitar take them to the music store or something like that and look at the used gear look at that to figure out you know you could probably honestly get like a Mexi strat that is maybe a little bit beat up but still just a good guitar for the same price that you're gonna get one of those starter kits and you can get you know a little tidying up now amps are another one like the beginner amps sound really really bad they do not have the tone that when you hear a guitar if you're hearing like rock guitar ac/dc van Halen wipes and all that kind of stuff you're not gonna get that tone out of those little amps so you know that's another thing that if you can if it's at all possible I mean if if at the end of the day all you can afford is one of those Star Trek guitars then then get it and start playing I don't want to like you know say don't do that but if it's possible to save up a little bit more buy a used guitar you'll get a much better guitar exit just take someone who knows about guitars with you they kind of inspect it and stuff like that and you can get I mean like the boss katana amps the Oh an old G deck those things sound great and just you can get something like that for real real tree I mean you could get like a G deck I remember they were at metronomes like a hundred bucks or something like I heard like 50 or something like that so just know that guitar is expensive it will require investments on your part but if you just kind of like save up a little bit more you can get a much better guitar and like I said a maxi strat is leaps and bounds above a squire bullit strata something like that it's gonna stay in tune better it's gonna sound better and it's because it's gonna feel way better on your hands actions won't be a mile off the fretboard but on that note I should add this real quick if you do get one of those starter guitars and you again you know someone who knows how to play guitar ask them to set it up for you see if those set it up because that was those guitars do not come set up well I've seen plenty of them when I used to teach at teach how to store and just setting up one of those like bullet strats or something like that can really make a big difference as well all right I'm gonna be honest all right I'm gonna be honest I'm wearing socks and sandals all right I'm gonna be honest I'm wearing socks and sandals number four get other guitars can be amazing and they can totally be jerks you know a lot of people the majority of musicians that I know are all extremely friendly and always willing to help each other out but you are gonna come across the few of them that are just jerks you know that's just that ship with anything you know that's that's just life but you know don't let those guys get you down those are the people who are gonna want to try to you know make to make themselves feel better about their playing they're gonna try to like belittle what you're doing or you know throw out big terminology when there's no need for it and stuff like that so don't be discouraged by those guys there's thankfully less of them then there are the you know the people who are just want to be helpful and kind of join in and be like oh you know and try to like lift up a beginner to you know just help them out on their way cuz you know all guitar players have have learned a lot who's been playing for a while and I guess that's an important thing we know if you're getting a good vibe from someone or something like that really listen to them you know listen to what they're saying listen to tips you know I was fortunate I have a really good guitar player who I knew around here growing up when I was a kid all these loud trucks and he was on me right away about using my pinky and I know people joke I use my pinky a lot more than what people give me credit for but that was one of the things I did and he really hammered in that I needed to alternate pick so I I kind of like I would just listen I was like okay you know this guy's really good I'm gonna listen to him so don't be afraid just to take people's advice you know like said there's gonna be a few of those guys you were just you know jerks but it's you know most guitar players are gonna want to help you out and it's also really important to know that some things just take time you know you might see the guitar player who has this amazing vibrato and stuff like that and it's something that you know some of that stuff takes a lot of work and takes a lot of time you know you could practice vibrato for months and really I think that's one of those techniques that you do establish more as you go on as a player so just understand that it takes time but luckily there's gonna be a lot of guitar players along the way who are hopefully gonna try to you know be beneficial to your learning and just just want to help out and the final one that's right still wearing socks and sandals you need to kind of understand that learning guitar will be one of the greatest things you've ever done if you stick with it hang in there develop this passion for it it's unlike anything else you'll ever do in your life you know you listen to things differently you hear just the world differently you hear everything is music it's such an amazing experience it literally does change your life because you said you just hear everything different like you're listening to songs on the radio and you're picking up the bass and the guitars and the drums and what's that guitar fill it's such it's so cool you know just understand that and you can share that you can spread the you know joy of music I think it's you know to me the greatest art form on earth which of course you know people from other areas of art will disagree but you know if you're kind of starting that journey on guitar just understand that it's amazing and it's gonna be a great one that you'll be able to have for the rest of your life so keep that in mind but that is gonna be it guys I'm ending it here in this random location in the backyard so I guess until next time guys I'll be seeing you all later and have a great rest of the day and if you are starting to play guitar do it 100% just put all worries and cares aside and just start it out it's gonna be tough but you can do it I guarantee it and you know let's just get going guitars in hands come on [Music]
