she asked me if we were married and if your thing is big Maybe this is Apple Wang odd a 160 year old traditional tattoo artist from deep in the mountains of Kalinga in the Philippines despite recently being featured on the front cover of Vogue magazine she lives a life far removed from that a humble one where she lives in a traditional Hut and spends her day tapping away each tattoo with a thorn needle and bamboo stick while being in the Philippines the opportunity to meet her and get a lasting traditional tattoo of rose and I couldn't turn down the opportunity come along with me on this journey while we Trek Deep into the mountains to meet Apple Wing odd all right so we're just leaving the mall of Asia we have stocked up and my bag is so heavy and it looks like we're going in this van over here can I sit in the front in the front oh someone's already in there looks like I've just kicked out that was quite a meme he's got to go so that's us for the next 11 hours and I'm glad I'm not packed in here because they like sardines let's just hope we've got aircon somehow we've managed to get the front seats all I said was can I have the front and the person jumped out I was literally going to offer like a thousand pesos for the front but um here we are here we are sorry about that but thank you I feel a little bit bad now oh my God 200 1 that's right that's all right you take that you take that see your buddy all right so we have some bananas is that a good price 200. time is 9 p.m and we've been driving since four o'clock and I just found out we're not actually going to get there until 4am and then we've got to track it about an hour and a half up the mountain and we have stopped at some random roadside Market which looks pretty cool just slide the tray along thank you how many rice so I feel like this is the first place I've actually eaten that has genuine Filipino food without all the Americanization going on what do we got here barbecue foreign all right now with Fox 10 o'clock at night some something's wrong with the van just stuck in the middle of nowhere I don't know what time we're gonna get there now so we have arrived all the buses and we were just doing a 14 hour drive and I did not get one minute of sleep that was horrible and now we need to climb these mountains for an hour and a half so there's talk of activity straight away but I am so tired I just want to get straight into bed but apparently it's a big shared room and we slept on the floor so I don't know what's gonna happen the beautiful sun has arisen and it is giving me some energy because I have not slept and I was a bit Moody before but if we can get through this and get a coffee I think things will turn around and we have made it that was hard so this is the deluxe suite and right now I am gonna get some shut eye because I am exhausted seeing the other side good uh morning I'm just woken up after my two and a half hours sleep um yeah time to get up absolutely exhausted tired everything but I'm gonna go have a look at the place get up have a coffee get that into me oh have a look at this mural We Are Back to Basics here we've spent two weeks in Manila and this is what people live like in the rural Philippines have a look we've got it right now I need to find a toilet and I don't know if there's just going to be a hole in the ground or or what where's the toilet oh this way okay yeah let's go this is the toilet slash shower so to give you an idea of how small that toilet is it's like a preschool one and that's how you flush it you just get this and you scoop the water into there and it also have your shower you just pour the water soak up everywhere and it's cold so a bit of an experience kind of technique is so it's beautiful of course ready you want us to jump don't do a peace sign s so I'm having tofu today is it too early for beer or good good good time yeah okay I'll get one I'll get a beer get one not two you want me to it was basically everyone could speak either good English or just a little bit but here it's uh very rare I think there's only a few people here that have been up there to speak it with and have a and it had like all near the kitchen it had all blood splatter on the wall so I literally think that this is where they grow kill and serve our dinner I'll see if I can find it ask her if this is this area apparently it's legal have a look at that so number of people smoking it last night I saw but we are heading up through this spot here to see the rice fields um it's like the little sloping Mountain areas well take a look at this this is how people live here just cut off from the rest of the Philippines because it's a massive Journey just to get up here and then we've gone even further back into this Village so no no phone reception up here no internet unless they've got a special router but uh yeah not much English around here it's very different to the the main capital city and all those kind of areas so you know the the rice you eat that you get in the supermarkets and everywhere else these are the kind of places it's grown these rice fields here you don't think much about where it comes from but it comes from places like this and it's absolutely beautiful have a look um it difference from Bali I saw the Rice Terraces from the body but it's more beautiful here you can see the layer from the top of the morning got it down until their Village and these Villages these are the rice Farmers this is where they live is it yeah yeah so we've just been invited in for some Beetle nut which I know that they do in Papua New Guinea but I didn't know they did it in the Philippines hold it hold it hello what's your name Curry okay we've got some suspicious looking white powder happening um interesting combination in here and I threw all of that happy wrap it starch okay okay and I threw the green leaf as well yeah the whole thing all of it but all right trying my having some uh it's all done okay so I'm getting a bit bit of a warm feeling not really dizzy just a bit of slight Euphoria and a little bit warm but horrible taste in my mouth so I don't think the sour taste in my mouth is worth the feeling but it was good to try so we've got a bit of time until we get the tattoo as you saw there's so many people there and I don't have much time here so I'm literally editing the video that you're watching right now while we're here probably spent a few hours on it and then we finally get to do what we're here for did I pronounce it right oh yeah better get to it so down at our home stay they've run out of coffee so we're going to walk into the village and see if someone will give us some but we've just heard some choir and there seems to be a church
