[Music] hi everybody and welcome to the saturday surfers interval in association with empora empora is an online magazine that's all about inspiring adventure whether that adventure involves sliding around on a snowy mountain pulling yourself up a climbing wall riding your bike through wooded trails surfing barrels as a down at the beach and yes of course exploring the underwater world while scuba diving it is a website that has got you covered it has interviews previews reviews just the regular old news everything that you need to keep yourself clued up on the big outdoor issues empora has got a lot so in today's clip we are going to be looking at essential bits of kits that you should really bring with you on a warm water dive so the first one is fairly obvious but if you're traveling and you decide and you're trying to decide what to cut back on to try and save weight then always always bring your dive computer they're not large or particularly heavy but if you have your own dive computer then definitely take it with you renting a dive computer is pretty expensive and you'll get a fairly basic dive computer that you really don't understand if you understand your own dive computer then just bring it with you you've read the user manual covered a cover haven't you and and you of course understand absolutely everything that's on the screen and when you get back you can actually plug your dive computer into your pc or you can link it to your app to download the dive data and share it all with your buddies dive computers are a safety device but only if you understand what they're trying to tell you which is why it's very important that you bring your own dive computer they also have customization built into them most dive computers today have a setting inside them that you can change to make them more or less conservative based on your own physical fitness because they don't know but a rental dive computer won't be set up for you in particular they'll just be set to a factory setting most likely so it is best that you really bring your own dive computer a decent rasp vest or a pair of rash vests are pretty essential whilst diving in sunny climates most divers only think of rashfest as something to sort of help prevent their wetsuit from rubbing or just making it a little bit easier to slip it on or off which they totally are but rashfests are more than that you'll notice on more and more rashfest today that they actually have upf ratings and that's because rashvetts actively protect you from the sun being on the surface of the water in hot climates is a very easy way to get sunburned you're naturally cooling off in the water but the sun is still bearing down on you but you can't really feel it quite as much rash vests are specifically made with fabric that blocks the sun from passing through it even when wet and even when it's stretched normal t-shirts aren't really made to work when they're wet so they'll protect you but nowhere near as much and fibers from that material will naturally fall off and enter this the ecosystem which you don't really want rash vets mean that you don't need to wear suntan lotion or sunscreen which are usually quite bad for the environment sunscreens leeching into the ocean actually harm corals and other marine species but you don't need to physically wear it just throw on your rash vests and that will protect you they make rash pants as well and of course full body suits though so that you can be fully covered and rashfest also protect you from a lot of marine bumps and scrapes and stings a lot of jellyfish and stinging nasties in the water can't physically penetrate through the material so they're just an all-round good investment to bring with you but don't go cheap on a rashfest not all rashfests are made the same so make sure that you invest in a good one a surface marker boy is an essential piece of kit whenever you're in the water a lot of dive centers and boat charters are actually requiring that everybody team has at least one surface marker boy between them so if you don't have one then you may need to rent one smbs are a safety device so that you can be better seen in the water when you are under the water or even just bobbing on the surface you are pretty much invisible unless the water is perfectly still a dsmb stands out on the surface even in high waves and makes you stand out to boats in the area i never just settle for only one smb for each buddy pair to be brutally honest i rarely dive with just one smb on my person uh if you're the diver without an smb and you get separated from your body then it's not much good is it get yourself a dsmb and learn how to use it properly with a real or a spool many divers think that if they're dying somewhere sunny and warm then of course they don't need to bring a torch with them on a dive and in quite a lot of cases they're kind of right the sun illuminates most of what you see underwater but there are of course lots of dark places underwater even during the day the inside of shipwrecks underneath rock outcroppings and of course inside caves there is little to no natural light and if you suddenly go from bright brilliant sunshine to complete darkness inside a wreck it takes quite a long time for your eyes to actually adjust to that darkness a torch means that you can shine the light pretty much wherever you need it and again they're not big or particularly heavy quite small torches today are pretty darn powerful and certainly enough to look in a crevice or just anything interesting uh or kind of poke a light through a porthole even if you're not planning a penetration then it's still good practice to bring a torch with you you know just in case they're a handy tool for when things don't go exactly to plan and you can use them for more things than just looking in dark places too slates or an underwater notebook are one of those things that you don't always think about but they're quite handy underwater if you're diving on a trip then chances are you're going to be uh sort of diving with someone that you've only just met and hand signals are hard enough to interpret at the best of times so trying to convey something a tad more complex than just the basics can be tricky if you can physically write something down and show them it's a much better way to get a message across and know that they've understood a well a lot of times i've asked a diver a question and then they've just gone okay and turned around at certain points of a dive it's important to get a message across and a slate can do that effectively they can also be useful for other things though you can draw a small diagram of the dive site before the dive if you get lost easily uh you can write down your dive plan so that you can stay on time a white slate can also act as a white balance for your camera to set your camera up sort of at every depth um to uh sort of take the blues out of your photos as well so there were five bits that i definitely recommend bringing with you on a warm water dive obviously it's important to bring a tank and your regulators and that kind of stuff but most divers know to bring those already uh it's the little accessories that don't always uh kind of you don't always think about bringing but what do you like to bring or wear on a warm water dive let us know down in the comments below thank you for watching and of course safe diving [Music] you
