an ice-breaking ship is designed to sail through heavy ice and provides safe passageways for other boats to sail through today's video is on five amazing ice breaking ships number five the SI Orgel has is a south african polar research vessel you wouldn't expect south africa to have many ice creaking ships like this but the ship does its job very well it was specially built with an ice strengthened hull and designed in such a shape that it quite literally splits the icing to number four the United States Coast Guard operates several ice breaking ships mostly around Alaska where ice can often put commercial vessels in jeopardy one such icebreaker is the cgc Polar Star featured here the Polar Star is actually a heavy icebreaker it is designed to clear away very thick ice if necessary but today it is cutting through medium-sized ocean ice to assist a scientific expedition [Music] [Music] number three it's fitting that Canada would have some of the best ice breaking ships around the CCGs Terry Fox is a Canadian Coast Guard heavy icebreaker it is responsible for escorting tankers and commercial vessels through the ice and operates in the region of Newfoundland and Labrador here it is assisting another vessel that got stuck in the ice [Music] [Music] number two acre Arctic is a finished based Arctic technology company that builds special equipment including ice breaking ships what we're looking at here is a new vessel called the baltica it is an oblique icebreaker a special type of ice-breaking vessel that can actually break ice going sideways as well as forwards and backwards oblique icebreakers like this are able to clear larger channels for other ships to sail through [Music] and finally number one the Russian 50 let P boaty is the largest nuclear ice-breaking ship in the world at over 25,000 tons this ship can break through the thickest ice in the Arctic Ocean it was commissioned in 2007 an insurer's commercial shipping traffic can safely navigate through the icy waters in northern Russia the ship has to okay nine hundred nuclear reactors and can operate for almost an entire year before needing to refuel the ship also incorporates an experimental spoon shaped bow allowing the vessel to more efficiently cut through ocean ice certainly a very impressive vessel [Music] [Music] check out my previous upload on submarine icebreakers and in the meantime subscribe for more [Music]
