rogue waves violent swells and sudden storms have rendered even the most modern ships inoperable Mother Nature is all powerful and these ships found themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time here are 15 ships caught in horrible storms number 15 the CD y blue the CD y blue is an Italian flagged cargo ship that since it was launched has been responsible for transporting containers across Europe and the Mediterranean despite being more than familiar with the Waters even a ship like this can find itself in trouble and that's exactly what happened in December of 2019 as it was sailing around Sardinia with 12 crew members on board it was traveling between Kari in Italy and Alicante in Spain when a huge storm developed and waves began crashing against the hall there was nothing the crew could do as the 8,000 ton vessel wasn't powerful enough to fight against the currents and was swept into a cliff in Tor Kanai Santa deoko on their approach to the Shoreline the crew sounded the alarm and the Coast Guard guard was soon on the scene footage captured from the rescue vessel and helicopter shows just how vicious the waves were and conditions were so bad that they made a rescue operation extremely difficult luckily all of the crew were eventually evacuated and amazingly The Vessel only suffered from light damage once things calmed down Salvage operations began to retrieve the cargo and the vessel was finally refloated and towed to a dock for repairs number 14 the USS Kittyhawk it's not often that you get to see footage taken from from a US warship but in 2018 a video was released that was recorded on the USS Kittyhawk and showed how serious a storm can be even for some of the largest vessels on Earth aircraft carriers like this are 1,68 ft long 257 ft wide and displac more than 97,000 tons it's 244 ft above the ocean surface which is the equivalent to a 24 story building and its anchors weigh an incredible 66,000 lb add to that the four propellers that weigh 66 6,000 lb each and are powered by eight steam boilers and what you've got is one of the sturdiest and most capable ships there is with a crew of around 6,000 people it's more like a floating city and while this weight and power means it's normally able to steam through waves and storms even it can meet its match in the video the waves being whipped up by the storm are so huge that they crash over the bow and cover the flight deck you can see a Blackhawk helicopter and an F18 Hornet that have been tied down onto the platform but even knowing they were secure the crew must have wondered whether they would endure the forces of the storm if this had been any other ship then the waves would have spelled disaster but the Kittyhawk continued on its Mission with hardly any delay at all number 13 the Bay of bisque the Bay of bis which is along the southern French and Northern Spanish Coastline with the Atlantic is notorious because of its unpredictable weather and he sailor familiar with the waters will know how important it is to keep an eye on changes there because things can change with no warning at all the problem though is that it's a vital route for travel and trade in the region and it's impossible to avoid passing through it you simply have to pray the Seas will be forgiving as you're traveling across the bay but these wishes aren't always granted in late 2017 a passenger Ferry was struck by a particularly strong storm which generated waves that were up to 30 ft high they threw the ship from side to side and it was utter Carnage inside with winds ranging to speeds of 100 knots passengers fell to the ground tables Cutlery other object rolled across the floor and for a moment the hundreds of people on board were left fearing for their lives according to the ferry operator there was never any risk to the stability of the vessel while there was certainly a bumpy ride there weren't any serious injuries and the passengers reached their destination on time number 12 Navy ship in the Southern Ocean with far fewer land masses to break the paths of waves the wind and storms of the Southern Ocean is renowned for being one of the most treacherous stretches of water in the world and it's there that the record for the highest wave ever detected was measured the lack of land means that ships don't travel across the ocean as much as elsewhere in the world and those that do can be in for an eventful time this footage was recorded by a New Zealand Navy ship in late 2015 and shows just how crazy the conditions can become the hmnzs otago was on a 3-we maritime surveillance operation in the ocean and to run a week into it found itself in the middle of a storm with winds that reached almost 100 mph and swells that reached up to 50 ft High the ship rode over the Peaks and crests of the waves and as it splashed down so much water was sprayed up that it obscured everything from view in an interview after the footage was released the captain said that during the mission they experienced everything from blue skies and Open Water to thick fog snow and moderate ice conditions meaning it's definitely not somewhere to even consider going if you suffer from seasickness number 11 the Viking Sky Millions of people travel each year as close to the Arctic Circle as they can in the hopes of being able to see the Northern Lights but one of the most luxurious and enjoyable ways to do this is by a cruise around the nordics one of the best ships that regularly travels this route is the $450 million Viking sky but in March of 2019 things took a frightening turn while it was off the coast of Norway the ship with 1373 passengers on board suddenly lost all engine power and was stranded in the sea with a storm approaching it was subjected to 26t tall waves and the crew were unable to steer it into the storm to reduce the force of the impact a number of passengers were injured as tables and chairs were flung across the decks and even parts of the ceiling began to collapse they realized they were in real danger when some of the decks of the cruise ship began to flood and all of the lights went out without engine power there were no stabilizers or any means of getting away from the storm and with no electricity the crew were unable to communicate with the passengers people had no choice but to ride it out and hope for the best and the fear increased as the ship started drifting closer to the shore the conditions meant that lifeboats weren't an option and in the end the crew gathered the passengers on the top deck they were rescued by a Coast Guard helicopter amazingly no one died in the incident but 16 people did require hospital treatment the ship survived too and after minor repairs was ready to host the next tour of the region number 10 watch out for that water spout when dealing with landbased storms t tadoes are some of the most powerful and deadly formations you could ever be unfortunate enough to encounter when they pass off the ground into water or simply form over a lake or ocean in the first place they start to suck the liquid up into them and form what is known as a water spout it's rare for them to last very long but they can cause extreme damage if anything lies in their path this video was recorded in late 2019 in Georgetown in the Bahamas and shows just how scary they can be the water spout moves frighteningly close to the boat and even at one one point appears to slightly lift it up from the surface of the ocean luckily on this occasion it passes by the boat remains upright and apart from some torn canvas and a missing dingy The Vessel and its crew survived it could have all ended very differently however and would have only taken a more powerful and slower moving water spout to cause a huge amount of Destruction if you ever see one approaching when you're at Sea your best bet is to get out of there as soon as possible because otherwise your fate will be in the hands of an unpredictable force of nature number 9 cruising in an Antarctic storm Drake Passage is the name given to the region of water that lies between Cape Horn in Chile and Antarctica's South Shetland Islands and is renowned for having some of the most treacherous weather conditions on Earth cruises to Antarctica remain a popular tourist attraction however and there's no avoiding the passage for ships traveling from South America normally they experience rough waves and strong storms but in December of 2010 the cayia 2 cruise ship found itself in Uncharted Territory it was returning to Argentina after visiting the Antarctic Peninsula but was suddenly struck by vicious weather according to the captain a 30-ft wave gushed over the deck smashed the windows of the bridge and knocked out the engines and Communications they immediately declared an emergency especially as there was now nothing they could do to prevent the ship from being pummeled by 55 mph winds and the top priority became taking care of the60 passengers and crew that were on board fortunately there was another ship nearby that was able to pass a Light phone to the cayia 2 so they could call for assistance and the engineer was able to get the engines working again albe it limited to a speed of just 5 mph eventually accompanied by an Argentine warship The Vessel made it back to Harbor without any injuries to those on board afterward the captain said that after almost 160 trips along the same route he had never seen anything quite like what happened that day proving that no matter how experienced you are the oceans can still throw up surprises we are constantly adding more more people to the top five's production team to bring you all the best content be sure to subscribe with notifications on and hit the like button number eight mega yacht versus Waves you normally only see Mega yachts in Sunny harbors and mored and calm Waters after all those are the best conditions for owners and passengers to live a life of extreme luxury the boats are mainly designed for pleasure cruising and providing amenities to the people on board but they still have to be seaworthy too just in case they experience stronger weather than normal in this clip we see what happened when a yacht found itself in powerful waves it's bouncing up and down on every Peak and trough the wipers are working furiously to keep the window clear for the captain water splashes all over the decks while the yacht is holding its own it's not exactly ideal conditions for it and the captain has to make an unusual decision he steers as close towards a tanker ship as he can to try to shelter behind it and while this does work to an extent the yacht is still feeling the brunt of the storm it's amazing amazing to see how much it's affecting the yacht but has virtually no effect on the much larger tanker in front proving that at CA at least sizes everything when you're navigating through a storm number seven the Venetian torrent sat within its own Lagoon Venice is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world its network of canals make it a unique place and a huge number of cruise ships visit the city each day something that's not exactly popular with the locals laws have been introduced to try to reduce the Imp these vessels have on everyone's lives such as it being prohibited for vessels over a certain size to use their engines and having to rely on tugboats to pull them around instead this means that the captains of the ships are reliant on the tugs to position them properly and this can become extremely difficult when a storm Moves In in 2018 these risks became clear when the Costa deliciosa was trying to pull into to the shore of set Matti but a storm was forming with powerful gusts of wind that were blowing it off course the captain was helpless apart from being able to Sound the Horn to warn anyone that was nearby as the tugboats frantically tried to correct the problem with rain and hail battering the ship it scrapes along small boats and Yachts before finally managing to get free of the Winds and continue on its planned course number six Cape Horn Cape Horn is located at the southernmost tip of the tiarra del Fuego archipelago of Chile and it's at the northernmost point of the Drake Passage where the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans meet with Waters of different temperatures blending together and storm fronts combining it's a particularly treacherous part of the coastline and any ship that passes around it has to be prepared for stormy seas this footage was recorded from the Mast of a sailing ship that was making the tricky Voyage in 2017 and it shows firsthand just how powerful the storm waves can become at first it handles the Peaks and troughs perfectly well but as it progresses along its route the condition continues to worsen by the end the bow of the ship is rising between 10 and 30 F feet each time it crosses over the crests of waves and it's left to crash down into the troughs Beyond spraying water all over the deck one of the things that makes this stretch of ocean particularly difficult to Traverse is the waves rarely follow a predictable pattern like they tend to do elsewhere and instead almost appear to form completely at random these conditions would be regarded as tough anywhere else in the world but around Cape Horn it's a standard part of life number five voyaging in Spain in February of 2005 the Voyager cruise ship which is owned and operated by V ships was sailing through the Mediterranean Sea with 480 passengers on board when it encountered an unusually powerful storm it was about 60 Mi off the coast of Palma in mayorca when disaster struck and a series of waves knocked out power on all four of its engines the captain had to resort to sending messages to a nearby liquefied gas tanker that was able to pass them on to Authorities on land which led to two tugs and several aircraft being sent to the Loc to provide assistance footage taken by one of the aircraft shows just how much the waves were pushing the ship from side to side and there were a number of times when it looked as if it was about to capsize luckily the engineers on board managed to restore power to two of the engines so the ship was able to position itself against the waves otherwise things may have well ended in disaster a number of the passengers suffered minor injuries from objects being thrown across rooms and losing their footing but these were all treated by the ship's Medics once engine power was restored The Vessel was able to slowly return to the nearest Port where those on board were able to disembark and return home and the lengthy repair process could begin number four on the edge of a hurricane the Caribbean is one of the most stunning places to be on the water in the world and is one of the busiest places when it comes to cruise ships and private yachts the region does however face some of the most extreme weather formations on Earth hurricanes thankfully the storms are fairly slow moving so most ships have plenty of have time to get out of the way any boat that found itself in the middle of a hurricane would almost certainly be destroyed but when the powerful winds reach for hundreds of miles there are those that may think they're clear but get caught on the edge that's what happened to Royal Caribbean Empress of the seas in October of 2018 and it led to a frightening experience for all of those on board as it was on route to Havana in Cuba it experienced the tail end of the Winds from Hurricane Michael and this sent powerful gusts over the deck and whipped waves and spray up into the air you can see in the footage the Sparks of lightning in the distance and the foam that's formed on the sea and can only imagine what it must have been like to be on the ship as it sailed through the hurricane passed over Cuba so the captain was forced to delay the ship's arrival to avoid the full brunt of it and on this occasion everyone managed to get through it unscathed something that could have been a very different story had they been just a 100 miles further on in their Voyage number three ship losing its cargo shipping routes around the the world are vital to international trade and account for at least 70% of the world's Goods traffic by volume schedules are meticulously planned to make the best use of all the container ships and they're afforded very little leeway when it comes to delays and holdups captains of the ships therefore have no choice but to travel through all of the most violent of Storms and are usually able to do so because their vessels are so huge and heavy you've probably noticed though that containers on ships are often stacked on the deck and this can lead to difficulties when they sail through choppy Seas the weight distribution is liable to shift and you had better hope that the Dock Workers had secured every piece of cargo because the last thing you want to do is lose any of it at Sea it does occasionally happen though as this footage shows the ship has found itself in unusually rough seas and some of the containers are knocked loose the crew can't do anything about it and simply have to watch their Precious Cargo float off into the distance before focusing back on the Storm working out how to protect the rest of the cargo that they have left number two the MV fedra the MV fedra was a 36,000 ton cargo ship that was registered in Liberia and was responsible for transporting goods around Europe and through the Mediterranean Sea it was a route that the ship and crew had done countless times before but in October of 2008 things took an unexpected turn a storm brought powerful winds which reached near hurricane Force levels that began to pound the ship while it passed around the southernmost tip of jalter and the ship simply wasn't powerful enough to prevent itself from being smacked mashed into the coastline footage shows how awful the conditions were and how there was nothing the crew could do to prevent the inevitable and all the attention was shifted to rescuing the people on board and trying to prevent an environmental disaster Coast Guard helicopters were able to rescue all of the 31 crew and soon after the last person had left the ship began to split into two halves around 150 tons of fuel was released into the water and had a serious impact on local Wildlife once the storm subsided the ship was a write-off and Salvage team team began planning how to prevent it from becoming a permanent feature on the coastline it would be a further 4 months before they were able to refloat the forward section to take it to a nearby port and in the following years they were able to dismantle what was left piece by piece number one vicious storm at the cape one of the other reasons why Cape Horn can be so dangerous is because the ocean nearby is relatively shallow which forces ocean swells to form large towering waves some of the winds that channel into the water have blown for hundreds if not thousands of miles and it's a region that's notorious for the development of rogue waves which can form even when other weather conditions are fairly calm this footage shows just how severe the waves can become as a small fishing vessel attempts to cross the waves it has no chance of sailing through them like a larger ship would and instead goes up and down with every Peak it's amazing to see the spray and how much water covers the ship each time it does this but the more frightening part is seeing what it's like from the inside the footage that's recorded from the cabin shows just how fast and violent the ship's movement is and the crew that are standing in external corridors are pounded by huge gushes of water you might wonder why anyone would subject themselves to this but the Southern Ocean is home to such large quantities of fish that anyone that's brave enough is potentially in line for a massive payday watch our waves playlist for more top 15 videos about massive waves sit back back relax and binge watch all of our best wave
