5 Echo Tricks You Never Knew About

this is five echo tricks you never knew about i had an absolute brain blast when i thought about this video idea because i thought about the absolute magic that these echo tricks can bring to any song and i was dying to show them to you guys i guarantee this video inspires you let's go ahead and jump into them the first echo trick i want to show you involves vocals and it's when we make the vocals echo only on certain parts of the song instead of having the vocal echoing for the entire length of the song i learned this a lot by listening to billy eilish in today's video we're gonna be working in logic pro x and fl studio alternatively so i like to use this trick on transitions of songs pay attention to when the song changes sound here no i can't hide it and i wish i could put a poker face on when our friends off the vocals just kind of end and then there's a space here but that space we can make use of we're gonna add an echo let's open up our favorite echo plugin i like to use echo boy jr by sound toys because echo plugins are notoriously overwhelming to look at and this one has the least amount of dials so it's more my speed but you're welcome to use whatever delay plug-in that you would like as for the time i'm gonna pick one one that means one echo per one bar we're gonna have a shorter feedback and then mix we're gonna turn all the way down because we're gonna automate the mix knob only to work on a certain part of this vocal so if i grab this mix automation here on the phrase that i want to echo we're just going to lift it here no i can't hide it i need to shape this echo signal a little bit because it sounded a little bit bold so here's my final automation let's go ahead and give this transition a listen [Music] that's gorgeous another place we could use this trick is right before the build buildup so let's listen to this transition and pay attention to this space of time right here we're gonna hear the vocal and then nothing after it [Music] see it's just kind of empty well we got to fill that up let's go grab our automation that we had just set up and just make sure we're overlapping the last word of the phrase here and then we can listen to the magic [Music] oh my god that's so good [Music] for this next trick we're working in the same project and i learned this from listening to laxity and it's an echo atmospheric trick that just brings too much life to your projects the way this one works is you have to grab some vocal chops i'm gonna grab just the stock echo plug-in in logic pro x here in fl studio in ableton you guys can use echo and ableton and fl studio you can use delay 3. so for this delay plug-in i'm going to add this to a half which means two echoes per one bar i'm going to leave the feedback on 64. i'm going to turn the wet down just a little bit echo boy jr is the second echo plugin we're going to use so we need two echo plugins for this i'm going to turn the feedback all the way like way up and i'm going to turn the echo time to 1 4 which means 4 echoes per 1 bar i'm going to add a little bit of filtering to this vocal just to make it more ambient [Music] and once you get the echo settings that you want add some reverb i'm going to use the hala shimmer because it's very very ambient and then this is what we get in the end [Music] this next echo trick adds some serious ear candy to your songs and it's when we take a reversed symbol transition sound and we add echo to it just to brighten it up and add that candy i like to use this trick on transitions of my song here's the transition that i'm going to be working with [Music] so the song comes to life there but there's nothing pushing it so i have this reverse symbol that i got from splice.com and it's got a little bit of reverb on it which is cool but we could definitely do better by adding some delay so i'm going to use delay 3 and i'm going to put it at a speed of 8 turn the wet down a little bit and let's see what we just created now watch what kind of magic this sound adds to our song that's just too gorgeous for this next one i'm going to show you why echo is really good for drones so for this we're going to use this piece of music here [Music] it's a really really chill piece of music and there's definitely plenty of room for a drone i have a sound sounds like this [Music] just a little pluck sound i'm just gonna make a very very simple melody now we're gonna go ahead and add delay three ignore these two delay plug-ins they're off so we're gonna add a delay plug-in at a speed of four turn the level up so i go to like where the ring turns orange and i come back a little that sounds good so now we need a second echo plug-in we're gonna use fruity delay and this one we're gonna set to two gonna leave the level where it's at i'm gonna switch this to ping pong and put the pan all the way to the right [Music] now we get like a nice stereo delay just listen to the curiosity that this little melody brings to this piece this is just too much for me i can't handle it anymore all right guys this final echo is the coolest sound to add at the end of your drum loops so this could be a drum loop in a verse in a hook it could be the drum loop at the end of a build up anywhere so for this one i'm gonna use it on this snare roll here but at the end of this i don't just want it to end i want it to kind of echo and fall off watch how cool this sounds and again like you could do this at the end of a drop anywhere where you end a big section of a song this just sounds super super cool so i'm going to use an echo plugin but you use the delay plug-in or whatever you want and for this one i thought it sounded best with a dotted rhythm instead of just the average noted rhythm that we were using in this entire video i'm going to zoom in on this last clap here that's the one that i'm going to apply the echo to so you kind of already heard it right there because this echo plug-in is on i'm going to automate this only to sound on that last node see how it just kind of like keeps going but it drifts away and now let's hear it in action when i play this whole build up [Music] just kidding there's no drop because i never
