who doesn't love disney well apart from the og star wars fans but really who doesn't love a good disney film the company has created some of the most iconic animated and live action entertainment of all time mickey mouse donald duck disneyland the marvel cinematic universe disney is currently flying high and now it's even conquering the world of streaming with its disney plus platform but it hasn't always been that way the house built by a mouse has made some questionable decisions to say the least in the past so jump onto your flying elephant and let's explore 5 disturbing facts about disney and don't worry if you don't have a flying elephant they're pretty hard to come by [Music] disney theme parks are famous across the globe families travel to them in droves looking to capture some of that unique magic only found in disney's films but the powers that be have noticed and they decided to control visitors like a certain wooden puppet that we all know with a huge nose speaking of noses one psychological trick is that disney's theme parks are covered in well-hidden vents that release the scent of vanilla throughout each park you might think this is just a way to make sure everything smells like candy but vanilla has been shown to stimulate areas in the brain causing a calm content feeling that's right if you can't find fun at a disney theme park they'll just tinker with your brain without asking you so that you think you're actually enjoying yourself another example of this is the emporium found on main street inside some of the parks rumor has it is that this sweatshirt selling store cranks up the ac by an insane amount so that visitors are so cold that they'll actually buy something to wear tinkering with heat even goes on outside with pavements deliberately darkened to absorb rays from the sun increasing the temperature this encourages people to move along the street to ensure a smooth flow of traffic i'm okay with something this subtle though as long as they don't put minnie mouse themed probes into my brain now we're good [Music] disney cartoons are supposed to be all sweetness and light sure they deal with tragic topics such as parental death i'll never get over bambi's mom excuse me i have something in my eye and other important issues like wealth inequality and bears eating all of your honey but some disney cartoons contain some really dark stuff created by animators without anyone knowing some of it may even qualify as subliminal for example in a scene from the little mermaid a cartoon bishop is standing to attention if uh you know what i mean parents were so outraged by this that disney realized their animators had been up to no good and went back and altered the original animation cells to make the film more well family friendly on the vhs cover of the same movie there's what can only be called a golden penis for all to see and in 1999 they released a version of the 1977 animated film the rescuers complete with believe it or not blink and you'll miss them picture of two nude women in the background in one scene disney claims this was not placed there by any of their animators but by someone else during the post-production phase okay disney we believe you for real honest [Music] over the years disney has covered some pretty out there topics these have led to some bizarre situations though i'm not sure we can hold disney to blame for all of them i mean did you know that after the princess and the frog was released in 2009 50 children across the globe were hospitalized after kissing frogs and not just that but they turned out to be poisonous and some of disney's strange decisions go beyond their films when the first disneyland opened in 1955 in anaheim california it had a penny arcade filled with amusements some of these involved shooting galleries for all the kids the only thing was for the first 12 months they used live rounds in the same original theme park there was a lingerie store called the wizard of bras i can just imagine the slogan now pay no attention to the man behind the bra disney's even gotten into hot water over its food preparation in the early 2000s they were planning to serve shark fin soup at wedding banquets even though the animals were endangered after animal rights protesters put pressure on the studio disney decided to drop shark fin soup from its menus what's next nemo pie walt disney created disney animation studios from scratch working as an animator and then overseeing every major production until his death in 1966 10 days after his 65th birthday he was known by many as uncle walt and kept a happy demeanor for the most part but like all good disney stories dig a little deeper and you'll find a few worrying themes for example walt used to write rejection letters to young women who applied for positions at his company they wouldn't even consider women initially for animation positions but when world war ii started he quickly realized that women would have to do the job as his male animators would be enlisted to fight at least he did change his opinion later on saying that women could carry out creative work just as well as men eventually walt disney's persona became something of a performance piece he was quoted as saying i'm not walt disney i do a lot of things walt disney would not do walt disney does not smoke i smoke walt disney does not drink i drink while walt disney has been portrayed as someone who's always affable with his employees the truth is is that the only praise anyone would ever get from him was an occasional that'll work before moving on to something else but maybe he really was a true uncle walt to many just you know one of those uncles that smells of whiskey and sometimes makes rude comments at family gatherings yeah you know who i'm talking about we all have them walt disney has apologized for some of his less than tolerant cartoons in the past it's still mind-blowing when you realize that some of the cartoons were even made for example their short cartoon the three little pigs clearly contains anti-semitic material when a big bad wolf dresses up as a jewish stereotype even disney's feature films have contained racially charged material such as the 1946 song of the south some of these films have been released through disney plus with a disclaimer so that people know what to expect while others have remained out of circulation and that's probably for the best there's a lot of debate about that some say these pieces are historical artifacts and should be released warts and all so that we can understand how prevalent prejudice can be then again others believe they should be kept away from younger eyes so as not to
