[Music] hey everyone in this video we went on a five-day fly-fishing trip totally off-grid and documented everything that we ate off-grid means not attaching or connecting to the grids resources like electricity water etc and on this trip we didn't have any cell service either we live off the grid full-time using only solar power to charge our lights and tech gear collecting water from grocery stores are filtering it from the river using elevation as our thermostat going higher into the mountains when it's too hot and coming down when it's too cold we use only a cooler to chill our foods and because of a summer-long fire ban last year we purchased a propane cook stove but loved using our wood-burning cook stove for the year and a half prior to that we would love to and aim to live fully off the grid completely self-sufficient in the backcountry but for now we still rely on the Internet to make an income require gas to drive our car and need to buy our food since we can't grow our own we went on this awesome trip with our new friend Andrew his partner Erin and her brother Isaac if on a camping trip you'd like to recreate these meals but do not have a propane stove a cast-iron skillet on a hot bed of coals works the same if not better giving you a delicious fiery taste on all your food we arrived in northern Montana and camped one night on Andrews spot of family land before heading out into national forest land I had a bunch of beat-up apples from all of our traveling but I peeled cored and sliced to make some cinnamon cast iron apples for breakfast I added coconut oil to the cast iron and let the apples cook on low heat for 10 or so minutes before adding some cinnamon and a little salt when apples were soft I stirred in some honey and that was it these apples go really well with oatmeal granola or pancakes and they also make a great dessert in the evenings very tasty [Music] later that afternoon when the fiberglass trailers were loaded we shipped out into national forest land [Music] we know Andrew from the internet through our YouTube videos using the scamp as a source of inspiration he and Aaron purchased a 1985 fiberglass u-haul trailer u-haul only made these trailers for three years so they're very rare and really cool [Music] it's the first morning of our fly-fishing trip in Montana our friends Andrew and Aaron are both using Western fly rods and Isaac is going to be using a spin casting rod and I'm using my attend Cara rod that I just got this is my tank are made by tank are a USA this is the Haim model which means feather in Japanese the Japanese people use this as a traditional fishing technique for many years primarily for commercial fishing and this rods 10 foot 10 inches long so it's got a lot of reach no real 10-car is super interesting to me because all I need is this ultra compact rod and then this little kit and this has my leader and fly line on it and traditionally tenkara fishermen will just use one type of fly for all types of fishing but I'm not quite there yet so I used all different kinds of flies this trip ting Cara is best suited for high mountain streams in really small water because you can use the reach of the rod to get it smaller fish out here in Montana the water is a lot bigger so I'm not sure how well it'll work but I'm just excited to learn out here with people that actually know how to fly fish so we'll see how it goes [Music] so this right here where the creek runs into the river that's like the main fin of the river there's a big hole there and the ripples that run into it and generally speaking this is going to be hiding out in those riffles waiting for nutrients bugs whatever that are going to be coming down and they'll be feeding on those cool today on this morning aaron has the only catch we got on the water a little late and the fish seem to have already eaten their breakfast so we went back to camp to make breakfast for ourselves for breakfast we made french toast we had this rock-hard three-day-old baguette that I didn't want to throw out so I sawed it into slices with a very dull knife I scrambled three eggs some water and some cinnamon and gave the cast iron a generous heap of butter then dip the bread into the batter and cooked each side for a couple minutes on low heat yeah we drizzled on some peanut butter honey chia seeds extra cinnamon and a dash of salt they were delicious my first time ever making french toast by the way that was good [Applause] well that's nice whoa are you gonna get in andrew found some huckleberries this morning I'm so excited we can just live out here forever who needs money so he's gonna show us where they are we're gonna scoop them all up all these short green [Music] delicious blueberries little more tart though huh in front you not as blue like blue flavor it's not as blue flavor and more of a red flavor you know what I'm saying like more cherry and blueberry I'm just sitting here trying to meditate the edge way you are in a survivalist freaking bear grylls yeah that'll probably last me about a week or so yeah I imagine it splenic artery's it's one thing about foraging it is extremely efficient [Music] moonwalking with Einstein the art and science of remembering for dinner we made a salad with a dressing of one part tahini 2 parts olive oil half a lemon 2 caps of apple cider vinegar and a bit of salt then shook it all together i massaged some kale to make it a little softer and easier to digest pour it on some of my dressing then added a cucumber red pepper carrot broccoli pumpkin seed nutritional yeast and everything but the bagel seasoning nutritional yeast plus tahini taste so cheesy but not like nacho cheese kind of cheese it's more like a cheese texture after dinner Ben and I raced down to the water to see the Magnificent cutthroat trout that Andrew had caught you guys get a photo yeah the plan this evening was to catch a few fish to cook and eat in this area you can't keep fish over 12 inches allowing the bigger fish to have a chance to propagate you see this mark right here that's from a bull trout trying to eat them so see how it goes like this it's like a perfect like a circular but it kind of comes out those are teeth that went like this and try to grab them bolt out nice it was really cool to see Baran using this Newton car rod though I could see its limitations in the wide river and he didn't manage to catch a fish [Laughter] that's pretty good what do you think throw them around there just let them cook with it oh no sure I hardly ever go fish these are the wild chive yeah a big ol happy nice fire well it's so pretty just like that [Music] you're not going to eat the skin now skins pretty dank I can't believe it [Applause] I've been intermittent fasting lately stopping eating around 8 p.m. and not eating my first meal a day until around noon in the mornings I've been making keto coffee I've been out of cacao I like to start my day with some good fats and no sugar so that my brain and body can run a little bit more optimally the most simple and waste-free way to make coffee in this camp is cowboy coffee letting the ground soak in hot water for a few minutes and straining them with a strainer we love medicinal mushrooms and have been using these mushrooms from Fresh Cap mushrooms fresh cut mushrooms are unique because they use the fruiting body or the mushroom caps you see above-ground rather than the my ciliated grain that most companies sell this means that you are getting no grains no fillers and only mushrooms I got this powdered butter on sale realizing that it is just powdered butter it tastes good but regular butter works just as well I also add a little bit of coconut oil for some more fat and I just love the taste [Music] this brother has been a highlight of my life I use it every morning and you can find a link to it as well as all the recipes from this video in the youtube description below [Music] there are loads of wild chives out here so I've been snacking on them this morning they're so good but when I think about yesterday [Music] my my are you doing not leaving that board [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the ball I feel unbreakable [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] break [Music] for dinner I made spring roll pasta I love making spring rolls and this is simply a cooked version inspired by Satya from pick-up limes for the sauce I mixed some peanut butter crunchy is the best if you have it chili paste coconut aminos a soy sauce alternative and a little bit of sesame oil then I add some water to thin it out a little bit and lightly saute the shallot and garlic then add the carrot broccoli and red pepper these rice noodles take just a couple minutes to cook in boiling water then I add the puc choy and the ginger I had the noodles and sauce and stir everything together topping it with rock cucumber and chopped honey roasted peanuts this meal is very easy healthy and so good caught a fish first fish on lines in Colorado I'm excited my first I was getting worried that I would never catch a decent-sized fish and I was worried that if I did catch a decent fish that without having line to give out it would break it but it happened and I'm excited yeah a tenkara I did it the perfect beer after catching my first fish on my new fly rod well technically I caught three fish today but my first keeper fish that I didn't keep but I earned it you think something's funny Elsa was supposed to build the fire tonight while we caught the fish but we got back and see us in that we got a jump on the day today the sun's not quite up yet we're trying to begin fishing before the Sun starts to heat up the water because when the Sun starts to eat up the water then the bugs are active and when the bugs are active for fish to act so we're gonna kind of beat him to the punch my tenkara rod has this little string of the not land and the fly line has a loop so you take the loop you grab it like that then you slide this little guy in here Oh No so that's what's at the end of the line and then I have it in this little coil and all my line is wrapped around here [Music] [Applause] [Music] this one I just wear all the time and it just kind of started gradually I mean we did a little hole here and I started fixing it up and then it got to a point where it was just falling apart to the point where if I didn't fix it and I probably wouldn't be able to really wear it this was originally sewn together my roommate bought it used and then she said it back together and then to me so then the Patagonian people set it back together again after that and then put tape over it it's still here is it Patagonia yeah if you're looking to get good quality gear going to a used gear shop like people get rid of the stuff way before they really need to be persistent and go look for stuff you're gonna check your section every time you go around the store and find something that has a bunch of holes in it and it'll give you some confidence spend $30 you know get a roll of some thread and the people and just go at it and you make it your own you can make it something that's going to be wearable in the futures and then it'll mean more to you because you actually put in the effort the work to make it something that was usable again this side is finished next up the big project Oh [Music] not bad for my first try [Music] one of our favorite dinners is breakfast hash this is one of Barron's many specialties dice up some potatoes and add them to the cast iron add some chili paste [Music] some salt of course kale and garlic [Music] and cook all of that until it's tender then add your eggs we usually do about six and combine it all together adds more chili paste to taste and some coconut aminos [Music] dog that's so gross [Music] [Music] oh he's got [Music] on the dais we plan to do a lot of physical activity will sometimes gear up with a pretty dense breakfast we like these Kodiak cake pancakes because they have a decent base protein content and you can add whatever else you want to them today we added some chia seeds cinnamon a couple eggs and that powdered butter pancakes by the way are another one of Baron specialties [Music] I like to top mine with peanut butter sliced bananas and some honey or real maple syrup Baron only started liking bananas last year and only on special occasions so he goes for double the peanut butter instead [Music] [Music] [Music] a really easy way to fancy up basic pasta is to add some sauteed vegetables to the sauce we usually add a zucchini some tomatoes shallot and garlic this evening we have some tortellini we bought at the bulk food store in case you were wondering why we don't use much meat in our meals it's because we only have a cooler to keep things cold on the days that we buy meat we have to cook it that very same day or else it'll go bad here I'm saving the hot water from the pasta to use to clean the cast iron after cooking [Music] then we topped it all with some nutritional yeast and some pumpkin seeds to crunch [Music] just after 1 o'clock and I'm gonna eat my first thing of the day it's gonna be a loaded peep loaded peep we don't have any almond butter so I'm you know somehow mash these guys up probably not in a bowl it also makes it look so easy to cook with the camera in one hand and somehow still have two other hands they had these coconut covered dates at the bulk food place we went to their delicious [Applause] you really want to get fancy set it off with a salt and a little bit of cinnamon [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] Hey [Music] for our last meal I made coconut curry soup with all the leftover veggies we had on hand from the week I had some broccoli sweet potatoes beets and carrots that I steamed on the stove making a huge portion to feed the crew when they got back from fishing as that steamed I chopped up a bell pepper and some ginger and made some rice that I set aside whenever I cook sweet potatoes I always leave a little bit to add to camp's food they are very good for dogs and camp loves them I poured the steamed veggies into the little bit of water that had steamed them trying to retain some of those flavors and nutrients then I added a few cups of clean water and thanks to many of your all suggestions I tried this organic better than boo-yan and I will never go back to boxed veggie broth it was so good I had a few teaspoons of that a can of coconut milk some red curry paste and then I add that bell pepper and ginger letting the whole thing simmer on low for around 10 or 15 minutes [Applause] [Music] and that is it for this video if you enjoyed this longer form video please give it a thumbs up so that I know you want to see more videos like this got bit in the hand made this fire so I can stand in the smoke so the skaters won't bite me so Bayon all recipes can be found on my
