welcome to a tutorial on how to use notion buttons in this video I'll show you how to set up notion buttons and how you can use them to perform specific task within your notion workspace and I'll show you some examples of how I use them uh in my templates so firstly I'll show you how to create a button so you simply want to type in forward SL button and then you'll see the option appear so you can click on that and so that's how you add a button now you can go ahead and give it a name and whatever name you give it will be the name on the button and you can also choose an icon if you like um so when the button is clicked we want to to perform an action so you've got a big button here so you want to click on that and then here are the different options that you can perform so what I'll do is I'll walk you through each one and I'll show you uh how to use them and I'll give you the examples of each as well so the first one is to insert blocks and so I'll show you where I use this um I use this in my planners template and so if we open up the daily page um as you can see we have a button here and I use this to add in new goals and also new uh to-dos for the checklist so all this button is doing is it is adding in new blocks above the button when you click it so I'm want to show you how to do this um and there's two ways that you can do this so if we go ahead and click add action and then insert blocks now you can choose to insert blocks either below or above the button so I'll give you two examples um we'll start off with below the button so this is great for carrying out any repetitive tasks so such as a morning routine or perhaps you're planning a YouTube video so we can say um you know you have to plan the video first then you have to uh record it and then you have to edit it and it's the same things each time so rather than writing this list out over and over again you can write it out once and have it as a button so when we click this that is now going to add in our todos um and then we can simply just check them off so that's one way of doing it I'm now going to show you how I did it in the planners template and so if we just go ahead and delete all of this and so in the planners template I had the the blocks insert above the button and to do this you will have to do this outside of the text box so you want to um just create a list like a bullet list or or a to-do list and then have a line underneath and then you want to drag and drop these in to the uh the text box I don't know why you have to do it this way it doesn't like it for some reason so and then you just want to delete that and then click done um so when we click this now that is now going to add in our list so that's how you can use buttons to insert blocks okay now I show you how to use buttons to add pages to databases um so one way that I use this I use this in my second brain template or any template that has quick capture buttons and so if we go ahead and click on a new task here um as you can see it's created a new uh a new page in the task data space so if we give this a name um we just call it new task and then we'll head over to the Inbox and as you can see that page is now being added to the database so I'll show you how to use this with um the button that we have created uh but first we'll create a database um and we'll just call this notion buttons um and then we'll hide that and then we'll add a new template so we'll create a new page and we'll just call this new task and we'll give it an icon like so and then we'll just get rid of these three uh default pages so to link this button you want to click on um add page two and then we have to select our new database so it is the notion buttons and so we want to add uh the new task so this is the new um default page that we created and so now that we when we click the button it's going to create a new page each time so that's how you can use buttons to add pages to databases okay next up I'll show you how to use buttons to edit existing Pages within a database and an example of this would be with a har tracker so as you can see here we have a complete all button and we have our checkbox properties and so when we click this this is going to select them all as checks and as you can see this does it on the calendar as well okay so I'll show you how to set this up from scratch so if you delete that button and create a new one by typing forward SLB button um and then we can go ahead and give it a name we'll say complete all and then you could use to give it an icon if you like and so when the button is clicked we want to add an action and this action will be to edit the existing pages and so we need to select our database so this is our habit database and then within here we want to edit the properties of each page so we can select our habits and choose to have the um have them show us checked because they are checkbox properties and so the edit pages in feature is all about editing the properties for existing Pages um so it doesn't have to be with just checkbox properties it can be with uh you know status or any other one that could be changed and so we can go ahead and click done here as we have now done that and so when we click this that is now going to select all the check boxes however if we were to have a page here for example um and we were to click the button um so as you can see that's now checked all the boxes here but we don't want that so what you have to do is you have to filter it so we only want to edit Pages where the date is today so you have to make sure the start date is relative to this day so we can click done and if we unselect these checkboxes here and then also unselect the checkboxes for today um and then we click the button so that should now select the checkboxes um just for today as you can see we can also set up buttons to check off the individual habits so as you can see here as we click each button it's going to select the checkbox um and the only difference here is that we only have one of the Habit selected but the filter Still Remains the Same and so that's how you can use buttons to edit properties for existing pages and more specifically for habit tracking and lastly we can use buttons to either show confirmations or to open pages and so I'll show you how to open a page first um you simply want to select um any existing page so for example we're going to open up the uh examples page and so when we click this button it's just going to take us straight to this page as you can see um so it's pretty straightforward that one um what we can do now is we can also set up a confirmation so if we delete this and then add an action so we're going to have a confirmation message first so it's going to say are you sure you want to continue and it's going to give you two options which can be changed is continue or cancel and then we're going to add another step and so now we're going to open our page again so if we select the examples page and click done so now when we click the button rather than going straight to the page is going to ask us if we want to continue and so if we click the continue button um it it will then take us to the page and so when we've got more than one action um we can actually change the order of these so for example you could have the open pages before the confirmation um but you don't really want that um but if you were to have that I'll show you what that looks like um so if you click the button um it's done it both at the same time basically so it's open the page but it's done the confirmation afterwards um so let's go ahead and change that back so that's how you can use buttons to show confirmations and open pages and that pretty much is the basics of using buttons in notion so I hope this video helped um if you want to see more videos like this let me know in the comments and thanks for watching
